Not sure if related BUT after spending the day from heck recovering from my 10.6.2 upgrade, my G4 Cube which was in the wireless network with an old airport card I pirated from and old macbook will NOT join the network. Airport Ext is set to use WPA Personal or WPA2 as security.
Any ideas?

I want to upgrade my old airport express to the new express. Can I just switch out the old for the new or must I delete the old network first and start from scratch with the new express?

It is not necessary to delete your old wireless networks first, but doing so may eliminate confusion. If you wish to do that, open System Preferences > Network, and select Wi-Fi from the left column. Click the Advanced... button, then select your old wireless networks and delete them with the "–" (minus) button. Make sure the "Remember networks this computer has joined" remains checked.
    OK then Apply.
This prevents your Mac from searching for your previous network which will no longer exist.
A new Express creates an open wireless network that you must select before you can configure it. It appears in your Wi-Fi menu like this:
Select it. AirPort Utility will load and walk you through its configuration.
Edit: If you are really using OS X 10.5.1 as shown in your profile, the above screenshot is not applicable. Instead, select the network called "Apple network nnnnnn" and then launch AirPort Utility.

  • Is Wi Fi speed limited by old iMac and old Airport Express?

I got my sister an Apple TV for Christmas. Download times for movies or TV rentals is really slow.
She has Time Warner Road Runner Cable modem at their standard speed (not upgraded to "Turbo". My question is whether a new Airport Express or Extreme running at 802.11n would either speed up downloads or transfers from her newer MacBook to the Apple TV.
I guess my question is whether the desktop - an old Power PC and it's old Airport Card hinder the performance of either the rental or purchase downloads or connectivity between her MacBook, Apple TV & iPad. When I visit, I also get a pretty weak signal from the den in the back of the house to the family room up front. Could the "n" upgrade improve on any of these limitations? Not sure if the slow main computer is part of the problem.
Sorry I don't have more details on the internet speed or specifics on the system.

Yes, the do. When you have non-"n" wireless clients on an "n" network, there will be bandwidth performance degradation anytime those non-"n" clients are active on the network. Typically, "n" clients only get around 70% of maximum bandwidth when non-"n" clients (computers, printers, Internet-ready TVs, or routers) are connected.

Possibly. The newer "n" AirPorts do provide better range than the older models. Regardless, this will would only have minimum improvement over download speed. It should; however, improve streaming speed between the MacBook/iPad and the Apple TV.

  • Old airport card

I have bought an old airport card for my titanium powerbook G4. Where do I put it?

Go to www.apple.com/support/diy/ and select your PowerBook. You will find the directions for installing the card.
You can use KB 88248, PowerBook G4 Computers: How to Identify Different Models to determine exactly which PowerBook you have.

  • Old Airport card not recognizing Apple Airport Router.

    Hello there,
I've just been given an old G4 (digital audio) to use for university and after doing some research brought an old Airport card off of ebay.
After putting into the relevant slot and plugging it in, it started to recognize all of my neighbor's networks, but not my own which is run from an Apple Router!
I also have a faster G4 iBook which uses the airport extreme card and it can find it no problem?
Is it a lost cause trying to get such an old card trying to find the router? I'd rather avoid having to 'borrow' my neighbor's connection if I can help it.

    Hi duane,
    Thanks for the prompt reply.
My airport base station has just been reset and is currently using the default channel (which i believe is 2) and the airport card still is refusing to notice it.

  • AE - What is faster?  Ethernet or Old Airport Card ??

I'm going to be setting up my older G4 in my office to share multiple printers and be the iTunes jukebox. It has an original Airport card installed in it. In the past I have had problems with streaming music from my machines with older Airport cards. I have the option of installing an AE with the computer.
If I run an ethernet cable from the G4 to the AE, will the bandwidth be greater than using the older Airport card ??

Absolutely. All G4s shipped with at least 100base-T Ethernet, which is almost 10 times faster than the old Airport card.

  • I am trying to find out if I can upgrade my old airport express from WEP to WPA2?  If so, how do I do that?

I am trying to find out if my old Airport Express can be upgraded from WEP to WPA2?  If so, does anyone know how to do this?  I have a new PC for work reasons and I cannot get online with my WEP password.  I realize now this is why my family and friends who bring PC's into the house cannot connect - I need WPA2 for PC, and besides, I should upgrade anyway as this is more secure than WEP.  Thanks for any help!

    Clone your system.
    Install the 10.6.8 Java update.
Clone back from your clone you made before installing the update when finished.

  • Old Airport card (b protocol) will not connect to Airport Express

    Hi,
I have an one year old Intel IMac running OS/X 10.5.7 and recently bought the Airport express. Setup went smooth and fast and within 10 minutes it was working. I did all the software and firmware updates.
Then I connected my wife's Windows laptop, network was detected and the password was accepted immediately so I got that connected as well.
Last, but apparently not least, I tried to connect my G3 iBook running OSX 10.2.8 with an Airport card (not the extreme but the predecessor) so I could use that one in the garden but it will not connect.
When I open the airport icon on the top of the screen then I see the network. If I select it and try to connect I have to enter a password. After a few seconds I get a message that "There was an error joining the selected Airport network".
When I use the Airport Setup assistant to establish the connection if tells me that "the password you entered was incorrect".
I was told that the Airport Express station is able to use a 801.11b protocol since that is what the old card uses.
I checked the password, I used textedit to type it first and the 'cut and paste' but nothing seems to work.
Long story but I hope I gave enough information for someone to resolve this problem for me. I cannot reply immediately to all replies but I will read them all.
    Thank you,
    Henk

Hello CarreraHenk. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!

Which wireless encryption standard are you using on your new 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station's (AXn) wireless network ... WEP, WPA or WPA2?
For WPA, the minimum requirements are the AirPort Card & OS X 10.3.n. The AirPort Card will not support WPA2.

  • PLEASE HELP! How to get (old) Airport Card working on (old) emac???

Hi, I have an older 700MHz emac and I got an Airport Card (the original, I think).
I opened the CD tray, connected the antennae and seated the card, but it still says "No information found" when I look in the system profile, under Airport Card.
What could I be doing wrong? I've re-tried this a couple of times already.

Push the card in really hard, until your hear it click - Mine was like yours, then I tried one last time to press it in real hard, and it worked... If that doesnt work, then you have a dud card, or your Airport slot is broken.

  • New Time Capsule and old AirPort Express?

I just purchased a new 2TB Time Capsule to replace my older/smaller capacity version, which is probably four years old now. I have my TV/stereo system hooked up via wireless to a very old AirPort Express which is probably close to 10 years old now. My question is, will I get the wireless performance advantage (that I assume the new Time Capsule provides) if I am sending over to this old AP Express? Do I need to purchase a new AP Express to get better performance for the entire system? Does it matter or make a difference, performance-wise, how old the APE is?

No. The AEBS will default to the slower 802.11b/g mode in order to talk to the AEX. To get any benefit from the wireless all the devices on the network need to support 802.11n. Replace the AEX with a new one and you will be in business.

  • Time Capsule and Old Airport Express Conflict

    Hello Everyone,
In my house i was using  my TC in Bridge Mode from my Router without a problem. Then i needed a ethernet connection in another room than the TC located. I thought i could use my old Airport Express for Bridging and using its Ethenet Output for my new IPTV receiver.
I started to configure via Airport Utility, everything was fine. New Airport Utility even helped me to complete install process. But then my TC just start continous disconnections, 20 seconds of greenlight and then again amber flashing, then greenlight then again same as my Airport Express. When i cut the power from Airport Express everything turns out to be OK. But when i put it on the outlet, they starting to disconnect in 30 sec intervals. I even tried to connect AE to my MBPr via Ethernet, within the 30 sec of greenlights i can get internet connection but then it drops.
I assume there is a conflict between these two.
Can someone help me to figure it out ?

So far, everything that you are telling us likely points to a defective AirPort Express.
There are no known conflict issues between a Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme or AirPort Express.
Here is what I would suggest:
Power off the main router, TC and the rest of the network.....all devices
Reset the Express back to factory default settings so you start over again with new, fresh settings.
To do this, power off the Express for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button first, and keep holding it in for another 10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the Express back in to power
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow a full minute for it to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Power up your network again starting with the modem/router first. Wait a minute, then start the Time Capsule next. Keep starting devices one at a time about a minute apart until everything is powered back up.
Now try to reconfigure the Express again. Temporarily, locate the Express in the same room as the Time Capsule for the setup and test it that way.
As another test, temporarily connect a laptop to the Express using a spare Ethernet cable. Turn off the wireless on the laptop and test to make sure that you can get a good Internet connection on the laptop.
If you can.....then you know that the Express is operating correctly.
Now move the Express back to the location where it is needed and test that way.
    Report on your results.

  • Wifi setup and finding Airport Card WEP

I just got a new mac running 10.6.7 with a built in airport card. I set up a wireless network and it works fine with my phone.
I am trying to set it up with my xbox slim, but a WEP address is required. Where (or how) do I find the WEP for my iMac with a built in airport card?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Are you saying that you have an ethernet connection for your iMac and wish to share this with your XBox? If so then you have set this up incorrectly. Go to Sys Prefs/Network and remove the network that you have created there. Just leave the AirPort card turned on. Also check the box to show AirPort status in the menubar.
    Then follow these directions for sharing an ethernet connection over AirPort;
    1. In Sys Prefs/Sharing highlight Internet Sharing (do not check the box)
    2. Share your connection from: Ethernet (from the dropdown menu)
    3. To computers using: AirPort (check the little box)
    4. Press the button AirPort Options...
    5. Name your Network
    6. Select one or use Automatic for the channel
    7. Encrypt the network using a 40-bit or 128-bit WEP key
    8. For a non-Apple device you must use only a 5 alphanumeric character, 40-bit WEP password or only a 13 alphanumeric character 128-bit WEP password
    9. Press OK
    10. Check the box for Internet Sharing
    11. Answer any dialog boxes that pop up
If you have set this up correctly, the AirPort status in the menubar should have a gray field with an arrow pointing up.

  • Extreme not working as good as my old airport card?

Hi all. I just bought a new iMac 24" yesterday and I'm having some internet issues.
I have free internet service in my building. Usually you connect to the signal, and then it brings up a web page where you enter login info to gain access to outside websites. I was using a G4 tower with the original airport card, and didnt have any issues with this.
Now with my new iMac, I can connect to the service but the speed lags so much that it's literally slower than 56k dialup. I know nothing is wrong with the building's equipment, as I signed onto it with my laptop and it's just as fast as usual.
I know the airport card in the iMac is a newer version than the original one I had in the G4....but shouldnt that make it better?
Is there a simple fix to this? I just cant figure this one out.
    thanks in advance.
    iMac 24"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    iMac 24"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

ALL the computers will run on the network at the
speed of the router. The new intel Mac should not be
SLOWER than any other Mac on the same network when
surfing the net - it should have the same speed -
currently the G4 has a good speed but the intel Mac
has the speed of a dial up - the question was 'why is
the intel mac slower than the G4 on the SAME network
    - you missed the point
I'm not looking to take sides, as I appreciate any input on this....however, this is more about what my question is in regards to.
If my new iMac ran at the slower of a high speed internet connection, I would be fine with that...however, it's running at an unreasonable speed which at times even seems slower than 56k..way slower. I feel that it's just strange that my G4 tower with the original airport card (not even an extreme) runs 50 times faster on the net than my new one...

  • Imac 10.5.8 airport card problems

I'm a Mac newbie. Bought an iMac in Dec 2008, used Linksys wireless router with it successfully until about October 2009.
At some point, for several days in October (perhaps after an iMac software update?) no wireless networks were found by my iMac, despite the fact that my PC laptop had no trouble connecting. Restarting the iMac, the router, and the cable modem didn't seem to help, but less than a week later, the connection "magically" reappeared, and worked fine for several months.
This week, I've experienced the same issue. Restarting (the iMac, the router, etc.) doesn't fix anything. Looking at the details in "About This Mac" from the Apple pull-down, under "Network" and "Airport Card", it says "no information found". Does this mean my iMac thinks it doesn't have an airport card? Does that mean the hardware has failed? (The airport icon in the top right corner is now just an empty triangle and clicking on it gives me a message that says "No AirPort card installed".)
Since the connection has not reappeared "magically", I've done some searching around for solutions. I see lots of posts related to MacBooks, but can't find a similar description for an iMac.
I'm grateful for any suggestions. Thanks for your patience with a newbie.

If you have not already, reset PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and if that does not help, reset SMC (power management)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
which is unplugging the iMac and reconnecting using a precise procedure. You should disconnect ALL cables when you do this. If you have been using a crowded or old power strip, you should connect it directly to a wall power outlet for this test. Power it up with nothing connected, except for power cord. Then add only your keyboard/mouse. Any improvement with the AirPort? If all is well, you can add back any other peripheral (USB/FireWire) devices; if the problem returns, see if one of the devices is causing the problem. USB and FireWire devices can sometimes cause interference.

  • Ibook G-3 with old airport card can't see New Airport Extreme Base Station

I have been trying for a week now to get my G-3 ibook set up on my Airport Extreme Network. No matter what I do, I can't sign on to the network. When I put in the password I get an error message 3151. I have no idea what this means. I have read everything, restarted base, changed network password, trashed all airport and prefs on G-3 and reinstalled. Although my network shows up in the control strip, it doesn't show in the setup assistant. Please help if you can, I'm about to go crazy! Thanks.

Dear Duane, I did have 802.11b configured, but I had the WPA instead of WEP enabled. When I reconfigured my network, the clamshell was instantly able to join and use the network. I have many many questions about how to use the network to allow both computers to communicate, but I'll read up on it and I'm sure the answers will be there. You saved me $240.00 for the 1st hour and $160.00 for anything over that Techserve was going to charge me to come and set it up. I can't thank you enough. Everyone tells me not to waste money, but to save for a new ibook with System X, but I love my old clamshell and I'm going to get it a bigger hard drive so it can be upgraded to run OS X. It's the old 4 Gb one. I can't thank you enough for your solution! Now I can work on the laptop in my bedroom! I love Mac stuff and I knew the Extreme base station would work, regardless of what all the posters have been saying.
