10.6.3 AFP Crashing

Hello All,
Since updating to 10.6.3 AFP continues to crash. This causes all Network Users to not be able to login.
Anyone have a fix for this?? This is a BIG DEAL as a business user.
Brad

Hi Brad!
Have you found a solution to your problem in the meantime? We have a similar problem here connected with Mac OS X Server's DirectoryServices crashing repeatedly. I've described our problem in another thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=11400291#11400291), maybe you could compare it to your setup.
I also suspect the "Mac OS X 10.6.3 Supplemental Update" (10.6.3v1.1) to bring a solution. Is/was this update available in your Software Update and did you apply this update?
Cheers,
Ron.

  • 10.6.8 server AFP Crashing

I know Apple have had problems with AFP Crashing for sometime now but when I first installed 10.6.6 I was only getting about 4 AFP crashes a year (its sad that I think this is a good thing) and even when I upgraded to 10.6.7 it wasn't much different.
When I upgraded to 10.6.8 it was pretty much the same for a while, but now since the end of January AFP crashes much more regularly, about twice a week.
This was happening when the AFP connections were between 250 - 300 but recently its been as little as 90 connections.
As someone had said in a previous discussion on AFP crashes, the AFP crash log always shows 202 threads, don't know if this is significant though.
Apple support have admitted that this is a bug in the OS and apparently has been fixed in 10.7.4,  not that I want to upgrade to that poor excuse for a Server OS.
Does anyone out there have any work arounds for this problem. In fact I am so fedup with this any help would be gratefuly received.(sledgehammer to the server might make me fill better but will not be helpful to my users).

No fix yet.  I had another crash a couple of days ago and I only had about 30 users logged and I noticed the connections were 3111 yes! 3111. I have read other discussions and people have said that they have experienced a similar amount of connections.
Anyone noticed this happening to them?

  • AFP crashing intermittently

Hi -- I've read about similar issues on this and other forums, but nothing seems to be working. I inherited an Xserve with three volumes that is running Mac OS X Server last fall. There has rarely been an issue with it...but within the last month, AFP began to crash on occasion.
Thinking it would solve the problem, I installed the 10.4.6 update. Since that time, the crashes have become more frequent (as I've since found it, there is an issue with AFP in 10.4.6). But now, simply restarting the service doesn't work -- I have to actually reboot the entire server to get AFP back up. I did that again today, but I have no doubt that it'll crash again in 2-3 days.
I've tried running disk utility on the master HD, disabling and re-enabling share points, etc. -- which are some of the suggestions I've read elsewhere. Some posts suggest reinstalling the AFP 10.4.5 binary, which I would do if the problem hadn't originally occurred before the upgrade to 10.4.6 (and if I was a bit better at using the command line..).
I'm not experienced with sorting through log files, but this seems to be a common refrain during or around the crash times:

(Slave I and Slave II are named volumes)
The other strange thing -- I cannot verify or repair disk permissions on any of the three file volumes. I can only do so on the startup partition (verify permissions buttons are gray'd out; when I try to do "verify disk", it says the volume cannot be unmounted.) Perhaps this is just how a partitioned volume works in Disk Utility...
At any rate, if anyone has some insight, I would appreciate it.

  • AFP crashes after 10.6.3 update

After updating to OS X 10.3.6, AppleFileServer on my iMac crashes every time I try to access it from my MBP. Console messages:
Apr 7 22:00:38 janus com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.AppleFileServer[1148]): Job appears to have crashed: Segmentation fault
    Apr 7 22:00:38 janus com.apple.ReportCrash.Root[1149]: 2010-04-07 22:00:38.729 ReportCrash[1149:1407] Saved crash report for AppleFileServer[1148] version ??? (???) to /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/AppleFileServer2010-04-07-220038localhost.crash
First instance of this happened on 2010-04-01, the day I updated to 10.6.3:
    [@janus DiagnosticReports]$ pwd
    /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports
    [@janus DiagnosticReports]$ ls
    AppleFileServer2010-04-01-232013localhost.crash
    Repair Permissions did not help.
    Any solutions are much appreciated.

Installing the 10.6.3 1.1 combo update and recreating all the shares fixed the AFP crashes. However, the old Time Machine backups in the sparsebundle in the recreated share are not displayed in Time Machine. Probably some permissions problem?
Note that unless you are still running 10.6.0, 10.6.3 1.1 will not be offered. You need to get it (735 MB) in the Apple Software Update site.

The situation is critical. Does anyone have the same problems?
AFP is crashing daily, sometimes 5-6 times in series...

    Found solution here:
    http://lists.apple.com/archives/macos-x-server/2007/Mar/msg00226.html
Fortunately I had cloned the server drive back in October so I restored the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.ByteRangeLocking.plist from that clone. Seems to be working now. If you need a good copy of a 10.4 com.apple.ByteRangeLocking fileI can email it to you if you respond to this thread.

  • Tiger Server locks up, AFP crashes, Mail Queue stops flowing and more

    Good afternoon,
I have run into a little connundrum. I have a small business which I am trying to help out here. They have a single Mac OS X Server running version 10.4.7.
    Domain is Companyname.com
    Hostname: Server.local
Only Internal DNS Zone is configured currently. We had a external zone and a internal zone configured recently but I removed the external companyname.com zone on recommendation from a Mac Guru I know.
This morning Mail stopped flowing. The only thing I could see that looked weird on the server was that IPv6 was enabled on the primary NIC. I disabled that and mail began to flow again.
One of the administrators locally went on the server after I left and tried to add a new user account.
He indicated that LDAP appeared to crash.
He tried this yesterday as well and it caused the server to lock up.
If they have reached their user limit would the server crash?
Here is the info I have so far
"I mentioned how right before you came over I tried to create a user and then the server crashed and needed to be force restarted. Well that seems to be happening every time I try to create a new user. This is a new one. I don’t know what happened. It’s possible the server crashed while I was trying to create a user this morning making the LDAP database corrupt. I don’t know. As long as I don’t try and make a new user it seems to be okay."
I did look in the logs and I couldn't readily see anything that may be causing this but I am open to any and all suggestions on this one.
    Thanks for your time!

  • Microsoft Office for Mac open recent File menu option causing AFP to crash

    Hi all,
We have an Xserve running Mac OS X Server Leopard 10.5.8. The Xserve hosts three file shares for about 60 users. Our network is 99% Mac based running mostly 10.5.8 with a few 10.6.x. We have historically over the past several years had the AFP service become unreliable and crash frequently. Late last week the AFP service crashes constantly. The quick solution to getting it up and running is to delete the AFP.conf file in /etc.
We have troubleshot one cause of AFP crashing to the Open Recent... File menu option in Microsoft Office for Mac applications. That is, through some amount (haven't been able to narrow it down to how much) of opening documents on the share via the Open Recent menu the AFP service will crash.
Here's what's happening in the AppleFileServer .crash file:

Our solution is to have all our users turn off the open recent option in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Not an ideal solution but it may get the AFP service running "good enough."
Has anyone had an experience like this before or can anyone duplicate the AFP service crashing when trying to open documents on a share via the open recent menu? Any other ideas?
    Thanks

    Update.
I have been able to consistently reproduce a problem where the AFP service will crash if a file that a user has an alias to is moved to a folder and the user is denied access to .
    1. On your Mac create an alias to a file or folder, that you have access to, that is stored on a share served via AFP. The alias can be in the Places section of a Finder window, on the Desktop, or anywhere an alias can be created. Lets call what the alias points to the target.
    2. Move the target to a folder on the AFP share and deny the user or group Read & Write access to that folder.
    3. Try accessing the target via the alias created in step 1.
    The AFP service should crash.
Can anyone reproduce this crash scenario too?

  • 10.7.5 Lion Server limiting AFP connections to 10

I have an Intel XServe, Late 2006 2 x 2 GHZ Dual-Core Xeon with 20GB DDR2-DIMM RAM running Mac OS X Server Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) that has started to limit AFP connections to 10. This is a problems as we use this server to host Network Home Directories for 1/3 of our students (approximately 100 student directories are hosted on this server via a fiber channel XServe RAID).
I know that OS X Server can handle thousands of simultaneous AFP connections...I'm using two other 10.7.5 XServes to host the other 200 student accounts (1 XServe is an Early 2008 2 x 2.8 Quad Core Xeon with 24 gb of RAM running the same OS Build and the other is an early 2009 2 x 2.26 Quad Core with 24 GB of RAM running the same OS X Server build). Both of those XServes currently have between 40-80 AFP connections. Before last week, the oldes XServe was functioning normally, allowing 20-60 connections. For some reason last week, AFP crashed on this system and when I rebooted the server it now refuses to allow more than 10 AFP connections (confirmed by an error message from clients attempting to connect). I know that this behavior is more indicative of OS X client which only allows 10 simultaneous connections. The only messages in the AFP error logs are:
AppleFileServer[172] <Info>: TCP Listener returned error on accept
    repeated over and over again.
Anybody have any thoughts on why this might be happening? After everybody leaves today I'm thinking of disconnecting the RAID from this Server and then attaching it to one of the other two XServes and then re-mapping the the student accounts to the other servers, but I'd hate to decrease my load-balancing as this is already a fairly slow solution as it is.
    Thanks,
    Christopher

I've done some more digging and it looks like the three packages included in the update have about 4000 files that didn't get installed.  A good number of them are .png or .icns files, but there are whole applications (e.g. VNCServer) that didn't get updated.
The system is currently in a state where it cannot install software via Software Update or via Installer.
    Any ideas?

  • AppleFileServer process keeps hanging - stalls clients' AFP connections

Since moving to SL Server (first used on 10.6.4, now 10.6.6), Mac clients have been complaining of spinning beachballs when accessing the server. This appears to have gradually got worse over time, as more of the clients have been upgraded from Tiger & Leopard to SL (we're now running 6 Tiger, 2 Leopard and 8 SL clients). It's driving us nuts, as it happens frequently to all users (all designers), several times daily.
There seems to be no common trigger from the client side for the symptoms, i.e. not restricted to any one client, any one app being used, nor any particular action on their part. It can happen while opening, saving, copying or moving files from/to the server, but very intermittently, so hard to reproduce on demand.
Indeed the same hang happens on the server when I'm the only one connected to it at night, from just about any of the client Macs, whether they are SL, Leopard or Tiger. If I do a test file copy from/to the server, the AFS process will often stick at some point, though not always, even when using the same test files/folders each time. Have tried various different folder/file combinations during the tesing, with pretty much no difference in behaviour, nor any consistency.
Having searched the web, I can't turn up any hard explanation for what's happening, nor a fix. Others out there are having all sorts of hassles with AFP, SMB, etc, but all in different configs & flavours it seems.
Anyway, I did finally manage to find a correlation on the server... when any of the clients hangs during open, save or copy, the AppleFileServer process on the server shows as "stuck" in the output of the 'top' command (top -o state). There are a couple of other processes that stick sometimes, but they have no obvious hit on performance or stability (these are usually launchd, DirectoryServices & msd, and no correlation to the AFS stick as far as I've seen).
Whilst 'stuck' like this, the AFS process CPU load mostly shows as 0.0%, and eventually frees itself up, with AFP then working normally again for all users. So, there are no server or client crashes, but it can lock up for anything from a few seconds to several minutes at a time, and perhaps 30-50 times a day, during which time no-one can load, save or browse files on the server
Am now very close to doing a full re-install of SL, though I doubt it will help, as the problem's been there since I upgraded the server to a new XServe with SL 10.6.4. But first I was wondering if anyone here might have the same/similar problem, and throw any more light on it?
The Macs are used on a corporate WAN, with Active Directory logins (but the problem still happens when connecting with the server Admin a/c). Networked Home folders are not being used - all users have managed user Homes locally. Users are located in both London and Amsterdam, but the problem occurs for all.
Interestingly, am seeing similar client hangs when testing with SMB as an alternative to AFP (but didn't try that with the top command yet), so I'm suspecting this might be related to the networking layer of things, rather than AFP specifically? Not exactly a safe assumption I know, especially as thus far I can't even tell whether it's originating from the clients or the server side of things. I'd put my money on a bugged AppleFileServer app though. We didn't get this nonsense when everything was Tiger, on the same network as now.
Short of running with Tiger on old hardware (simply not an option for us), we're stuck with SL. Countless other (mostly) recurring errors showing up in the logs (as per usual with any Mac OS), but none with so vicious a payload as this. Now desperate for a solution, but little spare time to find one.
Any suggestions, or requests for more info, please let me know. Have already tried numerous avenues, including AFP access/error logs, tcpdump, Google, etc. etc., but no clear indicator I could find.
I'm no Mac geek btw, so please be gentle!

    Hi,
You are not alone with this.
We have an OD master, separate file server (AFP with Raid attached with 2000+ users, 250 mac clients and on average 100 clients connected to network homes at a time.
All caches are redirected locally, time machine and spotlight searching disabled on the servers.
Running on 10.6.4, and working with no updates or changes nicely until...
Since December (after a clean install in July) we have really noticed the well documented (but not fixed) AFP crashes. It seems to occur for us when we have a few users using InDesign CS3 ( i have no proof of this but there is a pattern emerging). Up until december we had the most stable apple server setup i have known in 5 years, whereas afp used to just lock up completely, now it just restarts itself upon error.
Apple Premium support recommended updating to 10.6.6 before they would support us on this.
10.6.6 made it worse (slower logon times and even more crashes). Eventually they recommended to stop using Adobe programmes (in an art and design college).
We are currently testing with mobile home directories on this setup.
We have been using a similar setup (smaller though) on our music tech campus but with mobile homes, with great success for over a year now, although there are only about 50 concurrent logons on average there.
Well worth looking into as i have no faith in apple fixing this as most of the new server users are using very small setups with 10 clients max (home users with mac minis??).
I will keep you posted on how i get on because this really is a show stopper for us several times a week and it is really embarrassing for me to say to the customers i dont know what to do.
    Regards,
    Kev

  • Another AFP Question

I am a long time Unix admin who has recently taken over duties for a Newspaper, which uses Macs exclusively. Needless to say, there's been a slight learning curve, as the Macs have tricks and twists pure Unix systems don't... but thus far I'm very impressed.
Last weekend we migrated our LDAP and user data from our old 10.3.9 machine to a shiny new XServe and XRaid setup running 10.4.6
But since then, we have had intermittent AFP crashes. I cannot restart AFP, either through terminal with the serveradmin afp start command, or through the Server Admin GUI... it just stops again.
Here is what the Console shows me when I open it....

Anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this or how I can fix it? This is really starting to upset my bosses, and I'd kind of like to avoid that.

The message from the password server:
/usr/sbin/PasswordService: client response doesn't match what we generated
indicates that there was an auth failure with the CRAM-MD5 auth method (this is not one that AFP uses).
The ssh errors, are similar, though here someone is making probes against your ssh server and dropping connections before they can fail. I'd look at your sshd_config file and make sure there are no weaknesses.
I don't see anything in these messages that gives me a clue as to what is happening to afp.
If you turn on full logging for AFP, what is written to the AFP logs in /Library/Logs/AppleFileService/*.log when it fails to start?
    Hope this helps

  • Flash Player Update Service Problem

    Hallo,
I use Firefox, Vers. 13.0.1. and  Adobe Flash Player Vers. 11.3.300.262
According to the new installation of Firefox 13.0.1. and the above version of AFP the problem of AFP crashing after closing Firefox was resolved.
However, I now have the problem when AFP trys to Update. I constantly receive ther error message:
"Adobe Flash Player Update Service 11.3 r300 has encountered a problem and must end the process."
I receive this message several times per day.
This message may be different in the English language, as I am in Germany and receive naturally the German translation.
    I work under Windows XP.
Can anyone give me a tip?
    Thnaks

That's one of the many reported bugs that (hopefully)  Adobe is  working on now -- See: http://forums.adobe.com/message/4534831
As a quick fix to the problem, you might try disabling Flash Player's "auto search for updates" feature.
    Go to this page -- http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager02.htm l
Click on the "globe-checkmark" icon tab.
Click on the check-mark in the box next to "notify me when an update to adobe flash player is available" to clear it.
After you do this, right click on the screen, and in the drop down menu  scroll down to "global settings..." and left-click it.  This will call up the global settings manager, which is located in Windows Control Panel. (You can also access this program directly from your Windows Control Panel, but I don't know what sub folder it's in for Windows XP.)
Click on the Advanced tab, and then click on the box next to  "Never Check for Updates."
The auto update feature can be re-enabled once the problem is fixed.  In the meantime, you can periodically check for updates, and download them, right from this page -- http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

  • Samba autorisation problem (with xp computer)

    Hello,
I just swith my server (mac pro) from a 10.4.10 to a 10.5.1 server.
I'm new to server computing, so i stick to the standart configuration.
I'm expercing big sharing problems. I have the afp crash bug, but i'm also experiencing loads of autorisation problem with the xp clients.
I first experienced problem with windows authentification , windows side(i set up an account for each PC), so i tranform every share point from guest read only to guest read/write (apple+i on the folder, then i change the authorisation). But i experience loads of autorisation.
I finally fix the windows authentification problem, but it get worse:
Every PC trying to make a new folder can't name it. He still have autorisation, he can delete it, an make named folder in it.
Plus a lot of autorisation oddities, the autorisation don't seem to propagate properly.
I tried to swith to the advanced configuration, but i always completly screwed up the server after one or two hours.
    Thanks!
    Sébastien
    (please excuse my english).

You have the exact same problem as described here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1324515&tstart=0
Several of us have noticed it, especially with Windows XP Home. I've filed a bug report with Apple, and would encourage you to do so as well.
Please follow the above link - I have a workaround that might suit your case, as well as instructions for filing the bug report.

  • OD Question after installing 10.8 Server

    Hello all,
I am working with Apple support team on this matter but I thought I would reach out to the community as well since the Apple guys seem a little stumped.
    Here is the situation.
We have been using 10.6 Server on our XServe for a few years now. Aside from AFP crashing fairly often (causing our network users to not be able to connect to or loose connection to their home folders), it has been working very well.
Earlier in the year, I worked with Apple tech support to help resolve the AFP problem and the final solution they came up with was to upgrade to 10.8. Well I took it a step further this summer and put in a new hard drive and did a fresh install of 10.8.
I got DNS set up and working, I then enabled Open Directory and did an import from an archive I made on the 10.6 system. So far so good, I have been able to authentiacte to all my AFP shares with existing user accounts, log in to client systems with existing user accounts and successfully bind computers using our DeployStudio workflows. This works for both my 10.8 and 10.6 clients.
So the problem, I created some new accounts using Workgroup manager and was unable to authenticate at a log in screen or when attempting to connect to a share point. I did learn that setting users up in Workgroup manager does not enable all the services for the users, including File Sharing. No problem, I go into Server.app and enable the services I want. I am now able to authenticate to sharepoints with my new users but I can only authenticate at the log in screen on 10.8 clients. When I try on 10.6 clients, I almost immediately get the no go shake.
The Apple tech left me with the request to reimage one of my 10.6 clients so it is fresh, bind it and try again. Well I have done that. Still no go. I am still going to call Apple about it but I am not confident they will be able to resolve it for me. So I am putting this out there to see if anyone has any tips.

Here is what I ended up doing to get all the services automatically enabled whenever I add a user using Workgroup Manager.
I have a group called all staff. This group shows up in both Workgroup Manager and Server.app. In Server.app I gave the All Staff group access to all the services. Now when I add a user with Workgroup Manager, as long as they are placed in the All Staff group, then they automatically inherit the permissions applied to the group. Obviously you could do this for any group and just make sure the user is placed appropriately. Not even Apple recommended that to me while I was troubleshooting this with them.
I don't have any replica's going, so I am not sure what the procedure would be for that but I would assume that since they are replicating that all of the permissions and inherited settings would replicate. But I cannot test that theory.
Also for anyone reading my original post, I was able to fix the problem where my users were only able to log into 10.8 machines and not 10.6. Demoting the Open Directory master and then re-setting it up fixed the problem. Only that deletes all user passwords. Luckily I only have a little over 100 users so we manually entered all the passwords. Probably not the best solution for someone who has thousands.

  • 10.8.1 network home issues

I help a small school with the os x server and computers,
We have a mac mini running 10.6.8 server, and most clients are 10.5 or 10.6 with no issues.
Students have network homes shared via afp:// and have not had any issues
We installed 30 new imac, each running 10.8.1
If one student logs in with their account, it seems to go quickly, they get logged in see their stuff and can work.
If more that 1, it takes forever to log in. A class of 20 is taking 40 minutes for everyone to get logged in.
It just spins after the password is entered and eventually gets logged in.
All the other clients 10.6 or 10.5 still working fine, but 10.8.1 just is very very slow. The lab is unusable.
Everything is networked via gigabit ethernet, and once they get logged in things go well.
Any help or ideas would be appreciated.
    thanks

I would recommend installing 10.6.8 on those new iMacs its a good OS and it works very well on networks as you know, that's what I have done on my netwok, after all 10.8 is in its early development and there will be issues with it.
And of course Apple are not really bothered when it comes to networking Macs, you can tell that when you think about the demise of the XServer and the poor server tools they now have, Snow Leopard sever in my apinion is still the best they produced, its been all down hill since then.
Also when you start getting alot of networked macs watch out for AFP crashes, this is a known issue that Apple know about and claim they have fixed in 10.7.4 but I can't confirm this as I have diched AFP and I use a Windows server with smb, (set up a magic triangle). this has been working very well so far, and of course that way you get to use a real print server.(something you don't get with Lion or Mountain Lion)

  • Motion crashes on open: AFP Connection Status window appears

I am one of the overly enthusiastic fools who went to the Intel Mac Pro too early--before even Apple's FCP Studio ran reliably on it. (And apparently it doesn't even now.)
But I digress before I begin. Here's my challenge:
Motion--and only Motion--crashes every time I try to open it.
Before it ultimately crashes, this window appears:
    AFP Connection Status
    Looking up "G4MDD"
G4MDD refers to my previous computer, a G4MDD, which I ran networked to the Mac Pro until recently because I had to constantly default back to it to finish projects when the Intel Mac Pro misbehaved inexplicably.
I've followed all of Apples suggestions posted on "Troubleshooting Basics." I've trashed preferences AND reinstalled Motion 2. It's still looking for the G4, I know not why.
From the error report I've sent to Apple time and again, I take the following to be the problem:
