10.6.4 Bricked my Mini

Install appeared to get all the way done. Progress bar was all the way to the end. After waiting 30 minutes with nothing happening, I cycled power.
Now it boots to a crash screen: "You need to restart your computer."
Argh. I had a gut feeling I should have waited. Now I get to see if my Time Machine backups can really do a restore!
Erik

FWIW, the progress bar took quite a while to move that last little bit to the end when I applied the update to my two 8,1 iMacs. Oddly, it took longer to get there on the faster of he two. I updated it first & because it took so long for the bar to move at the end of the process I thought it might be stuck, but decided to wait it out, mostly because the About the Mac OS X v10.6.4 Update document says in part, *"Do not interrupt the installation process once you have started to update your system."*
I suggest that users take this advisory seriously & remain patient, especially with slower Macs, waiting at least an hour before deciding the update is stuck & aborting it by killing power.
If you don't, you may have to reinstall the OS & apply the update all over again to recover from the damage.

  • Help!  I've Bricked My Mini!

Tried to install Windows using Boot Camp, and it spit out the Windows disk and currently shows a "No bootable device--insert boot disk and press any key" on a black screen.
I'm running Leopard, but couldn't find the disks, so I put in a Tiger disk, which is now stuck.
    1. How do I restart the Mini back into OS X?
    2. How do I eject the disk?
    3. Did I just brick my Mini?
    Help!

For information, if you hold the Option key down (Alt on most Windows keyboards) during startup, it takes you to a screen which shows you any/all boot volumes available to the system. Thus if you have a bootable disk in the optical drive (a valid MacOS installer for example), a valid MacOS installed on the internal, a BootCamp partition with valid Windows install, and an external drive with a valid MacOS install (a clone of the internal for example), holding Option down at startup will take you to a screen showing them all, and giving you the option of selecting whichever you wish.
Beware though that some bootable volumes (some external drives for example) may not show immediately in that boot loader screen - and it's relatively slow to populate.

  • How To Do Fresh Install of Lion (Not ML)? ML Bricked My Mini

I am at the point that I need to reinstall Lion 10.7.4 onto my Mini that I attempted to install ML on. None of the recovery from Apple cures the ML panics after the several ML install attempts.
I need to do a fresh install of Lion, but need instructions.
    Thanks.

If your Mini came with Lion then you can use Internet recovery:

  • Osx server lost users

OSX 10.7 Server edition lost users. Only the one local account is showing in server.app. I read every forum I could find about the topic, nothing helped:
    - Completely reconfiguring and testing DNS settings, with the help of Hoffman labs tutorial.
    - Open directory changing to standalone server, and back to Open Directory Master (with restoring backup of OD data)
I ended up with a 'bricked' mac mini: After power on, I see the apple logo with the rolling gear, and that's it. I restored from a previous time machine backup, resulting in the initial problem: all users lost.
I'm really stuck with this one. Please help!

I did do a disk verify, was ok.
    No s.m.a.r.t errors
Meanwhile, I accidentally found the issue:
I did the dns check with another machine: a client, which turned out to be fine. But on the server account itself the DNS setting in network preferences pointed to googles dns servers before pointing to its own ip address. That was the issue resulting in a disappeared userlist (only after restarting: clearly, my server has never restarted in some months). It is then also impossible to re-setup the open directory master.
    Thanks for the answer.

  • [Request] MSI R9 280x Gaming OC Edition (Canada)

Hello, I accidentally flashed a Sapphire BIOS onto my MSI 280x like an idiot and am scared I bricked it because now the driver is crashing and I'm getting artifacting. I also stupidly overwrote the original vBIOS with the sapphire so I beg of you to please help me out with my initial vbios. Card was bought with 15.40 on it, I tried flashing to another one linked here for : 602-v277-28SBxxx however my numbers at the end are different. If it's still crashing, does that mean it's bricked? Mine is: 912-V277-057
Unfortunately I cannot upload the BIOS as it was overwritten by Sapphire BIOS! And I cannot find it anywhere else...looking for 28SB bios.
Even though I tried naming sapphire bios like so: atiflash -s 0 sapphireoriginal.bin and : atiflash -s 0 original.bin it still overwrote the MSI original.bin! Gahhh.
    Any help appreciated! Thank you.

What does that mean? what is your S/N?
Mate, that is my serial number!
Just wanted to update that I flashed with legacy 304 that I found on these forums and all seems to be working great again. In fact, the temps are much lower, I'm assuming because the new bios fixed VRM overheating...used to run @ 80c now it barely hits 70.
Great job MSI! I suggest others also update bios if temps are too high.

  • 6.1.2 update bricked my iPad Mini - White Screen of Death

I updated to 6.1.2 over wireless.  Shortly after, I noticed the battery was draining extremely fast.  I followed a suggestion I found here to let the battery drain to 0 and to reset my settings under Settings>General.  When the battery was about 50%, I shut it down completely as I wasn't using it and so that it would charge faster (not using battery on standby, etc).
I let it charge for about 4 or 5 hours.  When I turned it back on, I got a bright, solid white screen and then it shut off... or so I thought.  The device remains warm, as though it was in regular use, but the display is OFF - NOT blank, OFF.
It will not go into Restore or DFU mode, it will not turn back on, it will not do anything.
Waiting on an Apple call in the morning, but once it is replaced, I doubt I will purchase another Apple product, considering the sickening irony that my iPad was functioning fine prior to the update and the VERY UPDATE MEANT TO IMPROVE BATTERY LIFE ACTUALLY KILLED MINE to begin with.
I have very weak faith in Apple at the moment.

Guys, my ipad mini just had the exact same issue yesterday.
It was recently updated (about 1 week ago) to 6.1.2  and since yesterday it just turned into a brick (black screen, no reaction whatsoever,...) .
I tried different chargers & different USB-ligthning cables without any result. Somehow it seems the battery does not have any juice anymore and won't charge either.
My bad luck was that 4 months ago my daughter had the ipad mini dropped on the floor and the screenglass has a small crack. It did not affect any functionality and still worked fine untill yesterday. I went to an official apple store and they told me that the warranty doesn't count on the complete ipad since the screen is cracked/damaged.
Explaining that the crack had nothing to do with the current issue we have did not help.
Now I'm standing here with a 6-month old product which has no warranty and is as death as a brick.
    Thanks to Apple!

  • Windows 10 bricked my Encore Mini

I allowed Windows 8.1 to upgrade to Windows 10. I like Windows 10 on my laptop and desktop. It seemed a little faster than before, so thought I would go ahead and check compatibility. It said it was compatible, so I went ahead. During the upgrade, it said I was out of space and would I like to use external storage to complete the upgrade. I had a 128GB SD card in it, so I pointed it to that and set it going. It got through the download and had started upgrading. I left it to finish and came back an hour later. It was in an enless loop of booting, a dialog flashes up, and then it says it is going to restore the previous OS. OK, so I decided I had to reset the brick. I hit POWER/VOLUME+, and when it asked if I wanted to reset from the HDD, I said yes, and confirmed it with the next dialog. Rather than a smooth reset from the image, I received a message that my "PC needs to be repaired, a required device can't be connected ..." and an explanation telling me to send it to my administrator or manufacturer. Any ideas?

OK, I've mostly solved my problem. Since I was unable to order recovery media - the website wanted 4 mythical end digits to my part number, when there were only 3 - I bought myself an equivalent 7" tablet from another manufacturer (which had twice as much storage).  Storage, that was the problem. Firstly, you need to clear out space so Windows can download 2 GB of files before the installation can begin. That meant wiping everything I could off the Mini. What bricked my device was that when Windows 10 offered to use external media to store 5 GB of info, I pointed it to the SD card - MISTAKE! When it tried to boot after the installation, it didn't like something, and tried to revert to the old OS looking for the SD card that it hadn't loaded drivers for. It tried to restart and that put it in an endless loop. (It had also deleted the recovery partition, I think.) I was able to make a Windows 8.1 recovery USB from the new tablet, and it worked to a point on the Mini. I installed the Toshiba drivers, but the most space I could make was 1.25 GB which wan't enough to run the Windows 10 upgrade. (The new tablet had a larger recovery partition.) I had to use a (wireless) USB keyboard and mouse until I installed the touch screen driver. Eventually, I started over. Since the only thing that didn't work at all was the touchscreen. I installed that, but nothing else. I had 2.25 GB left to install in. Instead of letting Windows Update download preparatory files at take up that space, I created a Windows 10 recovery USB on my desktop. It didn't work running it directly because there were no touchscreen drivers, and I needed both a keyboard/mouse and my USB drive plugged in for it to work. Therefore, from Windows 8.1, I ran setup from the USB, and when the time came, I directed it the USB for storing the old windows version (this time it said it needed 9 GB of space).  BTW, charge the Mini fully before beginning. You won't have the opportunity to plug it in through almost the entire installation, which took over 3 hours. In the morning it was ready to complete the final settings. Now, it shows 2.5GB of free space on a 13.7 GB C:\ drive. There are 2.5 GB of Windows.old, which will automatically delete in a month. I've got a faster OS, and more free space. Life is peachy. Well, almost. I mistakenly installed the 32-bit version of Windows 10, not thinking the processor was 64-bit. I would have to start over completely. A more annoying problem is that autorotate turns the portrait screen the wrong way, so the image is always upside-down, unless I'm in Landscape mode. It's OK if I lock it in portrait, but then it no longer autorotates. It did it in Windows 8.1 without the Toshiba display driver, but I hoped Windows 10 would download a better one. (It eats space if you try to install it.) Windows 10 didn't fix it, and the Windows 8.1 driver wouldn't install. I've left it locked for the moment, hoping a new driver will download at some point. So I'm back to where I can use the thing, with more storage, but no autorotate. I've also screwed up the sync on OneDrive, but I'll sort that out (hopefully) in due course.

  • G4 power brick with Intel mac mini?  is this possible just to test?

A friend gave me an Intel mac mini, 1.60GHz CPU model, but no power supply.
I tried using my G4 mac mini's 85W A1105 power supply on the intel mac mini but nothing happens. I have to unplug the power supply from the wall to get it to power on my G4 mac mini (it apparently doesn't like being plugged into the intel mac mini).
Is it possible to use the G4 2005 power supply with the Intel mac mini if only to just test to see if the intel computer works? I don't want to buy a MA407LL/A 110W intel mac mini power supply only to find that the computer he gave me is broken.
Just wondering if anyone had any tips/ideas how to tell if the Intel mac mini works at all or if I'm just going to have to find someone who has the 110W intel model supply to test it...

The G4 mini power supply is rated at a significantly lower current capacity than the Intel mini requires, thus while some have had marginal success in using an old supply with a newer system, almost any tolerance variation will mean the Intel box won't run with the G4 supply. Not only that, but since the Intel system will load the G4 supply at a level it was not designed to accommodate, you could damage your G4 supply by trying.
If you have an Apple store in your area, I would take the Intel mini to the genius bar there where it can be tested, thus avoiding you having to buy a new supply without knowing if it will work.

  • Mac Mini intermittently emulates a brick

I'm having intermittent problems with my Mac Mini which begin with it not recognizing new usb devices when I plug them in, followed by intermittently turning itself off for no apparent reason, and then followed by not turning back on (no chime, no light, no nothing).
I've had it in to the Apple Store at least twice for troubleshooting, but the problem is intermittently and sometimes goes away during the trip from home to the Apple Store. It isn't just being unplugged for a while and plugged back in; I've tried that with various periods of being unplugged up to a day in length and it never made any difference. I think it has something to do with being jostled as I move it, because today it came on after getting a hard smack on the bottom.
Any ideas? I have a service appointment for today and I plan to keep it, but last time the appointment was no use because they couldn't reproduce the problem. Intermittent problems are difficult to troubleshoot.

BTW - I think the main board has alrady been replaced once, and the symptoms sound to me more like a bad connector or cracked board that is either shorting or not making contact slowly as the temperature or humidity change, then comes back to working order when the tension on the board or contact is relieved.
That said, I can't keep hitting my mac when it doesn't work or I will break something.

  • In Brazil. . . Do I need an adapter to plug in my HP Mini 110 into a 220 Voltage plug?

Hi! I'm living in Brazil for a while and just got here. I have an HP Mini 110 and the plugs here say 220V. Is it safe to plug in my computer or do I need some kind of converter? If so what kind?
My power is about to run out!!!!!
    Thanks in advance,
    Sasha

No. The power brick for the iPod senses the voltage and adjusts for the different ones.
You will need an adapter to switch form flat us pins tot the round pins used on their plugs.

  • EFI Update available for mid 2011 Mac Mini

New update available today, check Software Update for the download and follow instructions to update correctly.

And be smart. Backup first and install ONLY the EFI update. Do any other updates separately. Most problems with EFI updates seem to come when people install other updates at the same time. One at a time to be safe, as an EFI update can turn your mini into a brick if it encounters problems.

  • HT201897 Does a Mac Mini purchased in the USA require a power converter for operation in Europe or should I only purchase a different power cord for it?

Does a Mac Mini purchased in the USA require a power converter to operate outside of the USA or can I simply purchase a different power cord for it?

Depending on which European country (should their mains access plug/port shape vary) the
cord set with correct ends on it has to match. You can buy a cord that plugs into the Mini
where the factory cord goes, and the other end has one for the wall source shape. The wire
for the application should be able to support 110~240VAC.
With the cord or an accurate image in hand, you could either get a new cable to match both
realities (mini + wall supply mains local) or an adapter (US/Standard to EU/Local) for just
the head or input part of the original Apple cable. One plugs into the other, then into wall.
If you have a new Mini with a small modular plug/port on the computer end of the power wire,
it would have only two holes and no ground; the other end would have two prongs of equal
shape and size. Not a polarized plug and not a grounded three-prong. To get a replacement
power wire for the MINI to go from power source to the Mini is recommended, if you are going
to be staying in one location for awhile. A Travel Kit that offers no electrical conversion but only
the physical shape adapter kit, should a available in travel stores, airports; big box discount
stores, computer and electronic stores. This page shows the cord end of the appliance shapes.
The other end would be the mains shape for whichever country you are going to....
    http://www.signalandpower.com/European-Power-Cords/
So to match the country or regional power mains type is a primary concern for obtaining the
correct replacement cord to supply the Mini with local mains power. The end which plugs into
the Mini is of a certain type (numbers for EU and elsewhere are published, see link + images)
& the end that gets plugged into the mains or utility side, needs to match the local specification.
The link to Apple, to contact for Support and Service information in prior post, should be able
to help find a source for the local replacement type cord they'd sell local people with a Mini.
Apple local sources offer replacements for this purpose; and for travelers, a second cord for
a direct use (not adapter plugs) is a better bet. For those who only need a cord in two places.
If you are traveling to Denmark, UK, Swiss or other EU countries require different adapters.
Even places where the power itself may be somewhat similar. However your MINI has an
automatic power supply that will conform to that energy standard, you only need to supply a
correct non-transforming adapter. Simply a connection to adapt one shape to another.
The general purpose travel kit that is not specialized to Apple power adapters, would have a
plastic plug/adapter with the local pins on one side, and the US/standard two slots on the other.
So, no circuitry nor any other change of electrical power inside this device would be required.
    http://www.signalandpower.com/2-Prong-Plug-Adapters/
    http://www.signalandpower.com/Convert-to-Europe-CEE-716-plug/
    http://www.signalandpower.com/Swiss-AC-Power-Cords/
In other words, I believe my other post already covered this. On the ground on either end of the
path, adapters are common and the Mini does not use proprietary electrical components IF you
have one of the more recent shape aluminum models with the power supply built in. The older
Mini has the power brick and two wires. A US/Standard plug adapter to EU/Local would work in
either case, since all you'd do is plug the adapter plug into the local mains and the US plug into
that one... I see these kinds of discards for as little as 25¢ in thrift stores in Alaska. Or you can
buy a new one. Or you could get a complete cord with correct ends on it, for Mini + local mains.
Hopefully this helps somewhat. The only info missing is which EU country or region is involved.
Their shapes of plug are different, so the adapter end for local supply has to match their standard.
Swiss, Denmark, UK, and others offer different shapes and so on.
The Apple store in the location you are traveling should be able to supply you with a replacement
cable for a modern MINI, that has the correct local mains end, and the correct Apple mini end on
the opposite. Since the unit is automatically switching, the magic is done.
Since I supplied a means to locate any number of Apple stores, authorized service providers &
other Apple related vendors in my earlier reply: https://locate.apple.com/country you could contact
any of them along your route in the City in whichever EU country, to find a local MINI power cable.
    In any event, I'm done...
    Good luck and happy trails...

I just got a new iPhone 4 and i tried to download some songs from my itunes account onto my phone and it bricked my phone! So I can't use my phone, it's locked. It shows a plug going into an adaptor frozen on my phone. How can I resolve this problem? I got my phone at Verizon yesterday so I went back to see if they could help me today and they didn't know anything about it at the Verizon store. Theyy said to try IMac store here in town...

Ask the Verizon store to exchange your iPhone for a different iPhone 4.
UPDATE - Sure, try ckuan's solution first.  Then use mine if that fails.

  • Can I use an old Apple Cinema Display with new Mac Mini?

Currently I have an early PowerMac G5 that I bought used recently. It came with an Apple Cinema Display (20", I think - resolution is 1680x1050). The Cinema Display does not have a separate power cord so it must be powered from the PowerMac. My question is this - would I be able to use this monitor with a new Mac Mini - would it be able to power it the same as the PowerMac is currently.
Thanks in advance for your help. This is the first Mac I have owned since a "Fat Mac" many years ago (one of those with the 9" black and white screen).

Are you sure you have a 20" CINEMA display? I have 2x 20" CINEMA displays and both have their own power cord (and power brick). Maybe yours is a STUDIO display??? IDK if STUDIO displays worked that way or not, I've never owned one. Anyways, I have a 20" CINEMA display connected to my new Mac mini (early 2009) via the MiniDVI>DVI adapter and it works fine but is powered through the power cord though. I too have a PowerMac G5 (quad) but my PowerMac cannot power the displays without them being plugged in via their power cords. I am thinking you must have a STUDIO display or maybe there was an earlier version of the CINEMA display that could work that way.... idk. Mine were purchased at the end of 2005 along with the PowerMac G5 (quad).
