10.6.4 deleted most startup items

Hi there,
I installed 10.6.4 yesterday without any error messages. After the reboot I realized that most of my startup items have vanished. How could that happen?
Does anyone know the physical folder where these items are normanlly stored?
Thx!
Jan

Hi Kappy,
I had programs which were started automatically at login. They were shown in my user profil under the system preferences.
Most of them were active in the background and visible in the menu bar, like "ShoveBox", "Transmit" etc.
I can not find this folder. It seems the whole folder is gone after the update.
Is there a place where things are stored in these cases. There is nothing in the trash.

  • CANT DELETE STARTUP ITEMS FORM PANE!!!

    Hi,
I've posted, asked a lot and tried lot of things, but the "Startup Items" window under the accounts pane in Sys Prefs. is now 75 and counting!!! and I'm feeling there's nothing I can do about it!!!
I can't delete the startup items wich all of them read "Extensis Suitcase X1" and "Unknown". Obiously I installed Suitcase and told the app to load at startup, but i feels like auto-duplicates each time I start up the Mac!
I first autenthicate, then select wether one by one or many of them at a time. Click on the "-" button, and nothing! They still remain there like sticked whit cement glue!
Someone could tell me what's next???
    Thanks!!

    Hi, Jota and Richard —
Jota, I don't use Suitcase — and thus can't test solutions — so I'll limit my suggestions.
        (1) You may find a specific answer by searching the Extensis KnowledgeBase from this Support web-page. Here are results from a search using terms [login items] — including how to uninstall, problems with multiple accounts, their "Top 5 Troubleshooting Steps" for Mac, etc. I've read through enough of the articles to realize that installing and troubleshooting their software can get pretty complex — so I think following their instructions would be wise...
        (2) Have you checked in your HD's /Library/StartupItems/ folder?
        (3) I'm not clear on whether you're trying to troubleshoot a problem that may relate to Startup/Login Items. If so, please recall that booting into Safe Mode may help to troubleshoot font, font-cache, and startup-items problems.
    Good luck!

  • Is it okay to delete SymSecondaryLaunch from my Log in at startup Items in System Preferences?  I no longer use any Norton products.

Is it okay to delete SymSecondaryLaunch from my Log in at startup Items in System Preferences?  I no longer use any Norton products.  I have no clue what SymSecondaryLaunch does but it appears to be related to Symantec.

You are not required to have any login items so yes, you can safely remove. However some applications will continue to add it's self back until completely uninstalled. You might have to download an install to get an uninstaller.

It's possible you have other old software that is running parts. Download EtreCheck and paste results here for help troubleshooting.

  • How to delete startup items

When I go into System Preferences, then to Accounts, and then to Startup Items, I find a number of items in the menu that I do not want. How do I delete these items permanently? (Not turn them off, but delete.)

Thanks. I did that, but the highlighted line just moves up the list without deleting the previous item.

  • How do I delete Startup Items showing in sys info?

System Information > Software > Startup Items shows four things (Seti, PureFTPD, uControl, Virex) that are old and I have no use for.  They are labeled as 'enabled'.  I would like to delete these.

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
I never install system modifications myself, and (unless otherwise specified in this comment) I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.
Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.
Back up all data before making any changes.
You will generally have to reboot in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, the uninstallation may have no effect, or unpredictable effects.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

  • Startup items. what can i delete.

i just took a look in my startup items. and this is what i have.
    BRESINKx86Monitoring
    CoreDuoTemp
FanControlDaemon (this might be for quietMBP, if so i dont need it right since i use ShhMBP)
    HP IO
    HP Trap Monitor
    LexSleeperX
    PACESupport
    ShhMBP
please tell me what i can delete because i dont need unneccessary items being started. Thank you.

Those startup items were installed with third-party software you installed on your computer. You can remove all of them, but the software that depends upon them will no longer work.

  • I deleted some startup options now won't boot up get blue background with arrow

I have pavillion/compac . had some anti virus problems so managed to uninstall. As malware in startup I deleted most of the items in startup. Now laptop won't start. I must have deleted one I needed. Help please!!

Do you have the disk. If so you can recover it.

  • Firefox opens at startup on my iMac. It is not in startup items and not checked to open at login.

There aren't really any more details to add. I have checked everything I can think of in the Library folder and thrown out anything I thought might affect it. Firefox is not set as my default browser.
I have read many threads of people having this problem both here and on the Apple Support site. Most seem to be solved by unchecking "Open at Login" in the Dock icon or removing Firefox from the Startup Items in the System Preferences. Neither applies here. HELP!!! I like Firefox and use it from time to time but it seems the only way to stop this behavior is to remove it from my computer, which I will do if a solution can't be found.
    Thanks for your efforts.

Yes. I checked all of the places I could think of and those mentioned in the threads I read. Login items is what I was referring to when I said, "removing Firefox from the Startup Items in the System Preferences".
    This is a nefarious problem!

  • Can't delete multiple selected items in List or Library

I am experiencing quirky behavior when attempting to delete multiple selected items from a library or list. I select a few items via check box for each item I would like to delete. Then I click the delete button in the ribbon, and all I get is "Deleting...",
but no page refresh and the items are not deleted. However if I access the same list or library via the App server and select a few items, then hit delete, the page refreshes and the items are deleted.
So I consulted the Logs and compared the Web Server vs App Server, and the there is a lot of cryptic entries. The few lines that stands out most to me is the App server is:
    ConnectionString: 'Data Source=database;Initial Catalog=Content;Integrated Security=True;Enlist=False;Asynchronous Processing=False;Connect Timeout=15'
    ConnectionState: Closed ConnectionTimeout: 15
In fireItemEvent(), for list Building Locations, and item: 1
    In fireSyncItemEvent(), calling ExecuteItemEventReceivers()
Calling ExecuteItemEventReceivers() for list 0f773535-3b22-4c29-97f1-fd2b70b50dd3 on item 1
    Entering monitored scope (Event Receiver (Microsoft.SharePoint.Publishing, Version=14.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=71e9bce111e9429c, Microsoft.SharePoint.Publishing.Internal.PublishingWebEventReceiver))
    Releasing SPRequest with allocation Id {FE9A45A8-C042-4223-8FCC-4BD873C93885}
    PublishingWebEventReceiver:ItemDeleting: item
These calls are not in the web server log.
The list I was doing the delete action on was "Building Locations". We are using claims based authentication
Thanks for any insight or thoughts.
    Brandon

I confirmed that there is no rewrite tags in either web config (app or web).
I did download fiddler, and when I try and delete on the web front end I get:
It tries to access the URL https://mysite/_layouts/_vti_bin/client.svc/processQuery
Then it sends me here since I have been denied
    <html><head><title>Object moved</title></head><body>
    <h2>Object moved to <a href="https://mysite/_layouts/AccessDenied.aspx">here</a>.</h2>
    </body></html>
    The app server goes to
http://mysite/_layouts/_vti_bin/client.svc/processQuery doesn't get denied and deletes the items.

  • App. automatically launches, but not listed in accounts/startup items

I have a pesky application which automatically launches on start-up, yet it's not listed in accounts/startup items. It's called Microtek scanner finder. I seem to remember it started doing it when I originally got the scanner and installed software, and although it's always niggled I didn't mind when I was using the scanner. However, I'm not using the scanner anymore so want to be rid of it in my dock. Where the heck is it coming from? I don't want to chuck all the software as there may be an occasion where I need to scan a transparency, when I'll need to get the old scanner down from the loft... any ideas? It definitely launches as there is a little black triangle beneath the icon in the dock. If I quit it, it disappears but is back there again on another start-up grrrrr.

Hi, Kathykate. I have a similar Epson Scanner Monitor application that starts up each time I restart my computer. (Mine does appear in Sys Prefs > Accounts > my account > Startup Items, so I could delete it from there if I wanted to.) It runs all the time in the background, using a tiny amount of CPU and memory, and it has no user interface at all: If I quit it, nothing visibly changes, and if I open it again, there's no visible sign that it's open (including no icon in the dock for it). Its only function is to detect my Epson Scanner when I plug it in and turn it on. I ignore it the rest of the time, because whether it's running or not has no impact whatsoever on anything I do. I suggest that you take the same attitude toward your Microtek app.

This seldom really works. Reinstall ID, then update to 7.5.2 and try again.

  • How do I delete log-in items?

In System Profiler I see a log-in item that I don't want: MissingSync Mounting (I no longer use Missing Sync). How can I delete this from Log-in?

Are you referring to the items (also known as kernel extensions) listed in:
System Profiler -> Software -> Startup Items
If so, note that each item's location is listed to the right of the item in the main System Profiler window. For example, I have the Cisco VPN kernel extensions running, and their location is listed as:
    /System/Library/StartupItems/CiscoVPN
The instructions given above in the thread for removing Login Items -- they load not at startup, but as befits their name, when the user logs in -- are correct.

  • Removing system startup items?

Hey, I've got an app called WLAN which provides drivers and a config utility for using unsupported wireless USB dongles. I've now moved, and I'm in a place where it's fine to use wired ethernet, and so I don't need to currently use the app, but it keeps opening at startup and I can't work out how to disable it. It isn't in the startup items section of accounts in system prefs, so I assume it's considered as a system app (it did install itself in utilities when the drivers were installing)... I know I can just use an uninstaller app to remove the program, but I will be moving between here and home where I'll need wireless access again, and it was such a pain to set up that I want to keep it on!
    I'm running a G4 Mini 1.42 btw, obviously with no airport/bluetooth module.

Nah, tried the login items already...in library:startupitems I have Qmaster, retrorun (for backup) and a folder called RDUSB0064startup, which doesn't return any hits on google! :S Ill try deleting that and see what happens!
