10.6.4 freezing issue.

First here is what I'm running
Macbook Pro from 2009
OS X 10.6.4
2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Now my problem
I update from Leopard 10.5.8 two weeks ago to 10.6.3 then upgraded immediately to 10.6.4. Since the upgrade from Leopard to Snow Leopard I have been experiencing frequent freezes of my system. They happen no matter how many things I have running, or how little I have running. I have had my system freeze when I was just using iTunes, when starting up (a problem I never had with Leopard), when watching movies using VLC, and when just sitting without anything more than a single finder window open. Now when my mac locks up like this it lasts roughly 30 seconds and occurs anywhere from every 5 minutes to once every hour.
Now the steps I have tried to fix this
I spoke with an Apple Genius on the phone, nice person, and we went through things like clearing my caches, checking to see if my hard drive was ok with the disk utility thing (it came back green and good to go), eventually he told me that since I would see in my activity log that FINDER was becoming unresponsive from time to time that it was a system wide problem so I should just reinstall my OS and then update it when I could.
So i reinstalled 10.6.3 and updated it to 10.6.4 that very day. My problem persisted. I have since done 3 clean re installations (side note, my computer just did it again while typing this post) and every time I get the same issue, computer locking up frequently for 30 seconds at a time.
I am looking for any help I can get with this, even if it is just other people telling me they are having the same issues. I just want my computer to work the way it is supposed to, where i can listen to music without having my OS add its own silence in the middle of songs.
Please help,
BRJ

I personally think its a flaw with 10.6.4. I have a 2007 24" 2.8 Dual Proc Intel Mac. I was running 10.6 for some time with no issues. Then out of the blue i get the notice for the 10.6.4 update which includes some OS bug fixes and Safari 5. So I thought cool beans I'll give it a whirl. Wish I hadnt. Since the 10.6.4 update. Safari crashes like every other web page I go to. Ive tried resetting safari and still get the same issue. Then last night I got the BIG surprise where my system also started to lock up. I booted of my snow leopard CD and ran the disk util to verify the permissions which were all messed up and the integrity of the HD. I then repaired the messed up permissions and disk integrity and rebooted my system to find that now it will not boot at all. My system would just stick at a white apple logo screen. I then booted off the snow leopard disk again and reopted to install the OS. Nifty lil feature apple included with snow leopard. It did a clean install of the system folder but it also transferred my current profile and profile settings over to the new system folder. Which saved me ALOT of time. So far my system is running perfectly no issues or lockups. I am currently holding at 10.6. I decided to get on here and check the discussions to see if anyone else had similar issues with 10.6.4 and it seems they do. So im NOT installing 10.6.4 until apple makes some better adjustments to that OS. I advise others to do the same if they start having issues with their MAC after installing 10.6.4. Id revert back to 10.6. Hope this helps anyone else out there having some issues.

Any idea what it is? I'd appreciate any sort of diagnose?
My Mac has had some freezing issues before and recently was in repair because of those (memory was changed), but I've never got an error message after a freeze, and I've always had to force shut down it when it freezes. Ran the Apple hardware test couple of times, but nothing found.
I guess I have to reinstall Lion if this continues...

    Hello V-MA!
    I found this webpage: http://osx86.wikidot.com/known-issues#toc1
    by googeling for "com.apple.NVDAResman"
Probably you have to remove the Geforce Grafic drivers as discribed here. But please wait until some others in the forum confirm this.
If you don't understand how to do these commands with Terminal, ask once again for help.
In your message you did not metion, that you just updated 1 hour and something your OS ("System uptime in nanoseconds: 6688834587150"). This is an important information.

  • Mac Pro Screen Freezing Issue with NVIDIA 8800 GT too

There were lots of entry in threads, where the screen freezing issue was described (disorted screen with strange lines, only reboot helps). Nearly all cases seem to be related to the ATI 2600 card.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1358062&tstart=30
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1365277&tstart=0
I opened this new thread to show, that this problems occurs not only for the ATI card but for the NVIDIA 8800 card, too.
My MacPro was delivered 8 days ago and was running without any problems. But all of a sudden, I got that screen freeze. And it wasn't the first time, I was heavely working 2-3 hours with that computer.
In total, 2 screen freezes showed on my computer. The first one during working with the computer. The second one during booting into MacOS X. The screen freeze occured during the boot phase with the grey screen and the spinning wheel.
    My configuration:
    MacPro 2.8, Dual Quad Core
    6 GB RAM
3 harddisks, 1 standard from Apple, 2 Samsung with 750GB
    MacOS 10.5.2
    Formac 20" Monitor
Perhaps others have this problem, too? Than we should emphasize, that this is not an ATI related problem.

I've actually been having the freezing issue for a while now but I didn't have the know-how to troubleshoot it (PC tech trying to support the only Mac lab in the building).
MacPro will freeze randomly (no trend in time, system strain, or open programs). The mouse will operate but will not interact with anything.
    Specs:
    MacPro - Model 1,1
    Dual Core Xeon 2.66
    2gb RAM
    nVidia GeForce 7300 GT
    Mac OS 10.4.11
The machine always has 2 displays connected to it so the workaround that was discussed for the ATI 2600 doesn't apply. I had 1 display connected here in my shop and it froze for that as well.

  • Snow Leopard Crash / Freezing Issue - Keyboard Dead - Hard Reboot Required

    Good morning,
Been using Snow Leopard on a 24" 2.4Ghz iMac pretty much since the day of launch. Initially was very pleased, no real problems, seemed to run even smoother than regular Leopard, however, recently, my system has developed a bunch of issues, particularly when running word and/or transmission (possibly other apps, but I have noticed with these two so far).
The main problem is, very randomly, the system will lock-up. This can be after 1 hour or 24 hours, there is no real correlation. After the lock up, you are able to use open apps, ie Transmission, Word, Safari, Finder, etc, but they do not function correctly...for example
Word - You can click into documents, but any keyboard strokes are completely ignored.
Safari - You can browse links on default start page, etc, but you cannot create new tabs or type anything into the address bar.
Finder - You can browse folders; but you cannot perform any functions such as dragging to trash, etc.
Also worth noting, it the main menu bar at the top of the screen continues to say either "Word" or "Transmission" etc, regardless of what application you are in. Clicking on any applications icons in the dock has no response unless they were already running.
The system is unable to shut down or log off, and you cannot quit apps. The only option is to do a hard reset via holding down the power off button.
Note: My system is set to never sleep. There is no screensaver.
Any advice would be gratefully received. I'm a fairly new mac user so i'm not aware how to view log files etc., which may identify the problem.
    Many thanks in advance.

Just want to reiterate. I am seeing freeze issues with my iMac 2.8 GHZ 4GB ram and wireless keyboard and magic mouse. Had this for two years without problem. When a freeze occurs mouse is reponsive but clicks don't give result. I am unable to open window to force quit apps. It may be related to iTunes but I can't confirm. Happening again now, even as I type this I can't open other appslike console log. I add more later.

  • T30 freezing issues and Touchpad & Trackpoint buttons not working.

Firstly I'll explain the freezing issue (this is now the 3rd time I've typed this, as the first two times my laptop froze before I finished!)
I run my laptop with the battery at 100% and plugged in and that's fine; as is running it on battery. The problem arises when my battery is low and I plug it into recharge. Soon after it's running on a/c the screen will go black and only way to shut down is by holding the power button. If I try to restart it too soon, the indicator lights next to the power button will illuminate, but the screen will stay black. Usually after 5-10 minutes it'll boot to the IBM screen & boot the rest of the way, but not too long into normal operation it'll go black again (sometimes hitting ctrl/alt/del will bring the screen back but it would be very distorted (pixilized) and would go black again and reboot. What could be causing these problems while recharging the battery? I've tried this with a couple different batteries (both OEM IBM) and it does it with both.
Secondly, both left and right "mouse" buttons are now nonfunctional (though the middle button of the track points works.) I have the latest version of Ultranav Wizard and all the buttons are enabled. The touch pad and trackpoint ball work fine, just the 2 left and 2 right buttons do not. What could be the culprit for this issue? Luckily I have a usb mouse so that's what I'm using for the time being.

My T42p Touchpad and Trackpoint work fine however,
the buttons are not responding properly.
I'm forced to use an optical mouse to properly maneuver when working on
    the screen.

  • BT Cloud App for Mac - Upload freeze issues?

Anyone experiencing freeze issues during upload sessions?
I just downloaded the app yesterday and kicked off an upload of 20K (ish) files.  It progressed nicely through the day, but clearly froze at some point during the night.  Following a reboot I've seen a further freeze in the last couple of hours and resorted to closing/re--opening the app.

    Hi there,
Thanks for replying.  I have had issues with this continually throughout the upload.  I've managed to back-up just over 8Gb since Saturday afternoon, but not without a bit of coaxing (closing and re-starting the app every time it appears to freeze.).  In fact my upload has just finished within the last few minutes.  I've left it on after I've gone to bed on two evenings, but it's clear by morning that the app froze at a much earlier point.  I'm not on Infinity yet, but I do get a rock solid 1Mb upload so whilst the upload rate isn't wild, it would be adequate if not for the reliability issue.
Basically the client seems to freeze after a certain time, but there doesn't seem to be any particular pattern in terms of when it happens.
I'm really excited about using BT Cloud, having had problems with several other similar services.  I love the fact that it doesn't mess with your local file copy, and that it doesn't expect the user to work 'in the cloud', and that it iteratively looks for changes and just deals with them.
The iPad app seems pretty good, other than the wildly random way the sub folders in my Documents folder display.  I have a lot of sub folders.  I know there's a search bar, but still, a simple alphabet order approach would be better.
Happy to provide any further input wrt the Mac app stability issue.

  • Windows 8 freezing issues

    Peace be upon you;
I've been using windows 8 for quite a long time, recently the freeze issue began described as follows:
*All system functions are stopped except the mouse, I can move it around but un-clickable ..
    *even ctrl+alt+del combination doesn't work ..
*background programs stop, all what i see is the current screen nothing more ..
*when the monitor is turned off due to idle state, it takes a while to wake up again and turn on the monitor.
I ran the task scheduler, tried to disable some tasks that I thought they made the problem, but it still exists.
I have no experience with any log files or crashing reports, so if any needed to diagnose the problem, I could extract them ..
My last hope was refreshing my PC which restores windows to the default state and only keeps personalization, it kept freezing randomly which made me really upset.
My graphics driver is up to date.
    System info
    Thanks in advance.

Freezing here too, just thought i'd leave a mark for MS. Some reports have been
sent, but most my crashes didn't leave any report of why and what hapend. One is for sure, it's not system overload... as one word doc is not loading anythng that hard to freez it up.
For me it seams that it's related to internet connection, no difference if using IE or Mozilla, it occurred once with dropboxs, but that too has to do with internet connection, had turned wifi off at
that time hoping to make it more stable. And when it happens it happens in bundles, 5 times in a row, then an
unexpected running smooth will come (holding my breath like watching a horror movie).
I got Win8 Pro- 64bit, might that be the incompatibility that keeps crashing this thing, windows update utility check compatibility with the old system (ran it with 32 bit XP Pro, lappy was built for
Vista 32 or 64bit) and would have downloaded win8 32 bit, I went against it and now I'm to deal with that unholy deeds backfire? NVidias (win8) driver from their site crashed it to looping startup, and forced to go back to restorepoint, so that has made me
cautious of downloading any drivers, as the only ones I can get from HP site are for Win7, should I give them a go? I did install it on new (intel 330) SSD,
    firmware updated,
    had some Intels tool
chek it, all seemed to be working right.
I may come out of the closet and say it out loud, I sincirely like Win8 and I want to keep using it, hoping badly this freeze thing to blow over!

  • Interface freeze issue with Flash Projector

I am facing an interface freeze issue with Flash Projector running a flex state based application. A Flash Projector exe was generated from a standalone flash player ver 10.2. The target machine on which the problem occuresd has 10.3.
Basically "screen freeze" means that the user interface is running as usual on Flash Player, but it's not responding to any user input (like button presses). But if we alt-tab to another application, the state changes in the Flash player. There is display with buttons on the screen, but touching the buttons or doing anything else - it did not respond.  Rebooting the computer fixes the problem.
Can you suggest why this is happening? Is there any known bug in Flash Player.
The problem is this is being hard to reproduce on the developer workstation as it doesn't happen always. But it happens quite often on the target machine running an Intel Atom N270. What debugging steps can you suggest?
    Problem Description : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z25oV9QWRyk

First, thanks for the video.  Having this always makes it much easier to understand the problem.  A couple of recommendations.  First, if you feel like this might be a player bug, please add a new bug report over at bugbase.adobe.com and if possible please include any sample code or swf's that can help us reproduce the problem internally.  Linking the video would also be great.  In addition, would you mind reposting this question over on the Flash Professional forums?  This forum is primarily for end users, the Pro forums will get you in touch with a wider developer audience who might have additional feedback.
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • The rendering freeze issue.

I know this has been talked to death, but it appears (at least to me) that the freeze issue is because of the 7.0 themes, and not the program itself. There is a bug that doesn't exist in the 6.0 themes.
I came to this conclusion, of course, after many attempts to create a DVD with the Revolution theme or the Stretch theme. It worked twice initially with those 7.0 themes, but since then it freezes upon entering the rendering of the second menu.
After following many of the suggetions posted around, I still had the same issue. Now, after switching to a 6.0 theme, it hasn't locked up once.
The only question I now ask is why this seems to be happening more to MacBook Pro users.

I've been having the same problem with my macbook pro since november. I've been watching these forums to see if anyone has figured out the problem but I can wait any longer so I called apple. I've spent at least 8 hours on 5 different phone calls with 5 different people over the last two weeks. My computer still is not fixed. And from the sounds of the people I've talked to, they have no idea that there is even a problem with some of the macbook pros. I have done everything that they can think of including completely erasing and reinstalling my operating system and testing idvd with a file sent to me from apple. I was able to narrow down my problem to having videos in the drop zones of submenus. I can burn a dvd with as many submenus as I want as long as there are pictures in the drop zones. It burns fine with a picture in the drop zone. I can even burn a dvd with video in one menu drop zone and pictures in the rest. It doesn't matter which menu the video is in, as long as there is only one menu drop zone with video the dvd will burn. Is anyone else getting the same result?

  • Clock freezing issues

I Have reviewed the support article on issues with time and date and have tried all the recommended solutions but I am still having the clock freezing issue on my 5c. I have noticed that when I turn the airplane mode on then off that briefly fixes/updates the time. But the clock doesn't stay correct for long and will later be the wrong time again. i can't figure out if this is a phone issue or a cellular issue. Anyone have any ideas/solutions?

I feel your pain, though I would recommend the 9850 that Verizon does have out.  It's a HUGE improvement on the Storm 2.  I would switch to it myself but T-Mobile doesn't offer it.  So, I'm waiting on BB10 myself.
That being said, you can make a backup of your device before wiping the data.  That way you don't lose all your contacts, etc.  I would recommend making the backup, wiping the device and seeing how the device responds with no data on it.  If it solves the problems then simply add back the databases that you really need from the backup file.
If it doesn't solve the problem then a reload of the OS may be the next step before restoring the backup file.

  • Interface freezing issues and hard drive replacement

Hi, I have an Imac. It was getting slow and kept getting a long time lag on typing etc. So I bought snow leopard, backed up and wiped and reinstalled the lot. Then it started freezing - from moment one (literally). I could move my mouse and stuff was still running but I couldn't click on anything or select anything or get any response at all. Sometimes it would "white out". Only solution was forced reboot.
So I called apple, rand disk utility, kept showing disk errors - file 334576 should be file 334575 etc. Fixed them - they came back after each freeze. So they said its a hardware error.
Took it to shop. They reinstalled and no errors showed in the tests - but then it kept freezing when they tried to use it. Eventually they settled on a hard drive error - fitted a new one (money paid), it didn't freeze in 48 hours of tests and use. They said that if it keeps freezing it must be an intermittent motherboard problem. TBH I'm not convinced because, though it was slow before SNOW, it wasn't freezing!
Anyway, I took it home, put my stuff back on, was fine -
next day, froze twice in 2 mins - once, rebooted, then again, froze instantly before dock had fully popped up! (It seems to freeze in movement a lot - like task switching or dock popping etc).
It was then that I stumbled upon this term online "interface freezing issues" which seems to have been an initial issue with the imac, and there were some early posts about snow too. The problem is exact, if you minus this hard drive error issue, which MAY have been separate problem (cause by shorts caused by excessive cat hair inside computer).
I have read that external drives etc can be a cause, but not heard usb mentioned, only flywire - I have a dual USB port external drive for time machine. But really, this freezing is entirely since snow.
    Can I solve this problem?
    Do apple acknowledge this problem?
SHould I uninstall it and ask for my money back?
I would like solid, conclusive answers if possible - from people with direct experience. I work online and am also a writer - i am BEYOND dependant on this mac (especially as my partner is seriously ill and I am the sole income just now).
    thankyou for reading
    Anna
Anyway - ran disk utility - but no errors this time. Which is good.

As for the taking apart part. I'm not too worried. I've read quite a bit on the subject and watched a couple youtube videos. Also, i've taken a iBook G4 apart to it's core to replace that hard drive and did it without a hitch.
I'm a little unsure about the interface for the Optical Drive. From what i've read the HD is a SATA connection. While, the Optical Drive connection is IDE. Is that normal for one computer to have both?
I found two drives both around $100 for each. One is SATA the other is IDE.
    SATA

    IDE

Also, the HD from Newegg that I posted above, runs at 3GB/s. I've remember reading somewhere that my iMac will only run the drive at 1.5GB/s. Is that true?

    Hi Klaus1
I'm never one to giveup i've found the answer to my problem, it turns out it's actual game launcher causing the game to crash, that is installed on the download from steam; not very comforting when you actually think it could be ubisoft.   Here is the link to resolving the issue http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?p=26150471
It's on the steam website for any Lion users out there having issues with SplinterCell Conviction on Lion osx crashing on startup.  I can confirm SCC is now working on my Imac, slow but it works that's all I wanted was to play the game.
I hope this will be of help to other Lion users who and purchased the game from steam.
    Cheers

  • Apple and ATI aware of iMac freezing issue

Now they just need to figure out how to fix it.
Here is a post from today by one of the Blizzard mac techs on the Mac Support forum of the World of Warcraft forums:
There are at least two sides to customer support.
One is, identifying issues that need to be fixed. In this case (ATI
driver bug) that task is done. ATI and Apple are aware of the issue and
working on it, I confirmed that with them today.
Two is, finding a way to provide short term relief of the issue if at
    all possible.
Since we can't make a driver update appear in seconds, bear with us if
we make suggestions that may in fact improve stability for you until a
    more lasting fix is available.
    "

    wawalulu,
If you can wait a few weeks for Apple and ATI to sort out the graphics driver problems, that might be your best bet. With any new model it does take Apple a couple months to iron out the glitches so when this happens, you will have a pretty solid Mac.
I work supporting both Macs and PC's where the user base is in the thousands and I will tell you on the whole, Macs are definitely more trouble-free than PC's. However, I won't candy coat things like some of the posters on this forum. There WILL be issues that will crop up but usually Apple does the right thing and fixes them. Sending feedback and patience is the key. When the new Leopard OS (10.5) comes out this month, I guarantee there will be issues due to it's newness and lack of maturity. However, if Apple's past track record is any indication, it shouldn't have anywhere near the issues Windows Vista has. We won't even support Vista where I work because it's so troublesome!
BTW, my 20" late 2006 iMac I use at work has been rock solid. This is because it's a revised version of the original intel iMac Apple released so most of the bugs were worked out. The G5 tower I had before that was perfect as well as the G4 and G3 towers I used before that. All of these Macs were at least second revision of their respective model lines. If memory serves, all of them has some teething pains in their first revisions.
I have a new 20" aluminum iMac at home, breaking my cardinal rule to never buy the first revision of a new product and it does have the graphics freezing issue talked about in these threads but it's only happened twice. So, I knew full well what I was getting into and am patiently waiting for Apple to release an update and fix the issue. Why did it have to be so... darn... sexy?!
I'll end this post on the following note: I use Macs at home precisely because I don't want to spend time fixing things... because I do that all day at work! If there was a better computer and OS out there, I'd be using it!

  • IMac Freezing Issue -Need Confirmation...

    Hey all,
I need confirmation on whether or not zapping the PRAM seems to stop the iMac freezing issue. I have had 3 freezes within 10 minutes. I restarted after my last preparation to installing Leopard and the screen saver kicked in, which is the 'Cosmos' slide show and the graphics froze up. Screen went black and I left it for a couple of minutes. I came back to it, and had an image on the screen, but it was still locked up. So I restarted it. After boot up, I opened Activity monitor, and locked up again.
So I zapped the PRAM on this 3rd restart and have not locked up since. I'd bet 100 to 1 that if I were to restart, without the PRAM reset, I would crash within 5 minutes of the start up.
I really believe without a doubt these iMac reboot issues are related to specific EFI versions failing to initialize graphics correctly.
Can anyone confirm this? If your iMac crashes, does Zapping the PRAM fix it?
I'll be calling Executive relations contact and telling her the bad news.
Okay, so first off, this isn't a solution to this iMac plague, but it should prevent the freezing and NO, it does not have to do with removing the ATI drivers.
I was asked to install Leopard by Executive relations at Apple and told her that, as soon as I do, my iMac will freeze. So, I have been preparing the Leopard install and have crashed 3 times, in a row... at that point I said, Leopard is going to be a no go but I needed to use my iMac without it crashing. So, zapped the PRAM like I did before and immediately the graphic freezes went away.
    So

Here is my experience, iMac 24:
I bought in JR NY 2 weeks ago. I had to use it without internet connection (so no updates) and no freezes.
Then I connected to internet and installed the available updates and start to get the freezes, even trying the PRAM reset.
I tried to remove the extra memory, change memory slot but no lucky, video artifacts (like pixels not refreshing) when moving the mouse over the dock icons then freeze.
I had no other softwares installed at all, only the OS applications.
I formatted the HD and reinstalled the Tiger and didn't accepted any update, so I could use the imac for 2 days without a single freeze, but some black screens when screen saver starts.
Since no freezes, I decided to update the OS again and after the first boot the freezes came back very fast, I could start a freeze in about 10 seconds.
I tried the PRAM reset without sucess and my machine was ready to go to a tech person.
Yesterday I updated the OS to 10.4.11 and did a PRAM reset after the update and tested the machine for 2 hours without a freeze or video artifacts, looks very stable, but I have to test it more.
You guys tried the Tiger last update ?
    Ulisses

  • MacBook Pro - Latest on Freeze issues ?

About to pull the trigger on a MBP 15" , the $1799.
Plan to add my Intel 120Gig SSD to it
I have read a TON of forum post on freeze issues, apparently related to graphic card switches ?
Have these issues been resolved ?
Anyone pick up a MBP recently confirm ?
    Thanks!

Ok, found an answer on applesliced.com:
"On a Mac without an eject key (like the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro Retina Display), you can force your computer to shut down at any point by pushing Command + Control + Option + Power button. Before you resort to this, first try a force quit on a problem application by pushing Command + Option + Esc."
I just tried this and it seems to have worked. At least, I was able to it down and when I turned back on the power it booted and I was able to log into my profile. Now I don't know what happened to the iCloud setup that started the whole problem but at least the install seems to have completed correctly. Any idea what I should check to verify the iCloud setup?

  • MB 2.0ghz freeze issue

I have had this MB for about 2 weeks, and in the last week or so, I have had constant freezing issues, probably due to overheating, but possibly due to something else. I have run all disk repair and PRAM and all the usual stuff, to no avail, what can be done?

I've been having the same problem... Thought it was the keyboard, trackpad, video etc. Freezing was really random. However, I must've found a solution... I've been working on and off on my macbook unibody for about an hour now, going in and out of screensaver/ sleep without any freeze problems.
Go to System Preferences, Keyboard, Set Turn off when computer is not used to NEVER.
This worked for me. Hope it works for you too!
