10.6.4: refresh Finder window?????

I find this unbelievable, but I can't find a way to refresh a Finder window...
any suggestions? thank you..

An old thread, but I feel obligated to reply as well.  Alexander is absolutely correct.  It is supremely irritating for someone to ask a specific question and for someone to chime in with "Why do you want to do that?  Do this instead."  In this particular instance, suggesting they close and reopen is a painfully obvious requirement, hence the original request.
Whether you have used your Mac for 26 years or 26,000 years and not needed what the OP is asking for is completely irrelavent.  *HE* needs it.  Answer the question or keep it to yourself.  I actually *USE* my Mac and need to refresh all the time.  I have multiple Finder windows open all the time, and am creating directories, shares, copying files and performing all manner of operations - particularly when building websites and managing folders, wiki, etc and having to close out and open the finder window again, and the *navigate back to where you were* is a total PITA.    In Lion, some things automatically refresh - but things like shares and other network resources do not.  Lion also provides for immediate rename-update which is a fantastic feature, but there could still be some improvement.
My reason for posting, however, it is to support Alexander's statements, and to simply ask people to think first before creating unnecessary churn on the list.

  • Can not refresh contents of finder windows

I can not get my finder windows to refresh their contents. My picture folder is the one that really bothers me. When I am trying to upload pictures to the internet, the picture folder is never accurate. I have tried the refresh finder apple script, restarting the computer, opening and closing the window, nothing seems to work.
The content is there, when I search for a specific picture file it is there, but it is not located in the right subfolder. I download and manage my pictures on kodak easyshare.

    Hi there,
The content is there, when I search for a specific picture file it is there, but it is not located in the right subfolder.
Hmmm, are you saying something is moving them? Or the Finder isn't opening them to the right folder?
    Have you tried this one...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10958253
Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, reboot once more.
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions...
Move this file to the desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    reboot when it completes.

  • Finder/Window-Content not responding to changes and doesn't refresh

    Hi,
i have a very strange Problem with the Finder since i upgraded to 10.6.4. The Finder doesn't react to changes from certain Applications.
I noticed the effect in the Folder 'Downloads', f.e. if i try to download a file. Usually two files appear, the intended file with 0 kB and another temporary file. After the download is complete the temporary file will be deleted and only one file remains.
Usually the whole process is visible and shown in the finder window. After the update it isn't which means that if i download a file, the Window content does not reflect the changes and the new files are not shown, even after the download is complete. To see the new files i have to trigger a change, either by creating a new folder or by changing the location (moving up a level).
Interesting enough this only happens with certain Applications like Firefox or 'the Unarchiever' (a compression tool). If i download a file with Safari the temporary files and the downloaded files are shown in the window content without manually triggering a change. If i use 'keka' (another compression tool) the changes are also immediatly shown.
In order to narrow down possible errors i have taken different approaches:
    a) i intently scanned and watched the console and read all error reports. There are no errors shown (with firefox or the unarchiever).
    b) I created a new user profile and the effects are the same.
    c) i ran 'disk utilities' and scanned the Access priviliges. Apart from the common problem within /system/java/... there are no problems
    d) i ran 'onxy' to clean the user and system cache. I rebuild the LaunchService Database.
    I didn't fix my Problem.
That leads me to conclude that the problem is located in some system-function which is correctly triggered by some applications and apparently not by others.
    My Questions:
    1. Does anyone else has this problem and possibly a fix?
    2. Does anyone know how the finder is triggered by applications in order to refresh a window?
    tia,
    jc

    Hi Jeanclaude,
You've described the problem well and took some excellent troubleshooting steps
    b) When you created the new profile, were you still engaging your third party apps, or are they installed in log-in items?
    1. It would be interesting to try a Safe Mode startup (It will take more time to startup in Safe Mode because it runs a directory check.)
2 If step 1 doesn't turn up anything, re-install from your 10.6.x install disk (10.6 has the ability to "install in place" without touching anything other than system specific files.) Just pop in the disk, double-click and follow the prompts. Remember to uncheck language localizations if you don't use them & Printers except the one/ones you use.
Let us know your results after these 2 steps.

  • Finder window refresh

My only problem so far with Leopard is that finder windows don't refresh unless you go back and then return to the folder. Surely this could be fixed with a simple solution?

Two bugs that I've noticed so far relating to this, not sure if it's what you're talking about specifically:
    1) When resizing a list view Finder window, if there are more items in the list than can fit in the window and you try to drag-resize it (using the bottom-right resize control); the window doesn't actually refresh +until you let go of the mouse button+. So you end up with a bunch of white space at the bottom of the window where the list should be, but it won't show you the rest of the items until you let up on the mouse button...
Note: This is not always the case. While I can't track it down to any one action that triggers it to happen, it does, which is why it is definitely a bug and not some odd "feature". I just tried it in my Finder to test it and it actually works ok. But 10 minutes from now in some other window, it won't refresh correctly - not exactly sure what's going on.
    2) After deleting some files, the available disk space text in the window's status bar part doesn't normally update. I think it is more common with larger files, but never had a problem with it on Tiger (Tiger always updated the text as soon as the trash was finished emptying).
In Leopard, the trash will finish emptying but the window's status text doesn't show the changes for a while - usually only after I close and reopen a window on that drive (though this doesn't always fix it, sometimes it takes well over 45 seconds or more to update and show the changes).

  • Finder window won't refresh

I'm sure this is an old complaint, but I have found few resources that help me understand what is going on. I would like to use rsync to back up portions of my main HD to a second HD. It works fine. The first time I sync'd the directories, the Finder window for the destination showed all the new subdirectories and files as they were created. Subsequent incremental updates, however, did not appear in the Finder window. I actually had to force a Finder restart to refresh the window properly. What's weird is that if I created a file manually in the destination directory using 'touch foo', the Finder window would refresh and show me both 'foo' and the incremental rsync update! Is there no better way to get the Finder window to reflect the contents of the directory than to either bounce Finder or write some tedious (OK simple, but...) script?
    Thanks,
    Ron

You found the simplest way afaik, been a problem since 10.0.0

  • Finder window doesn't refresh

    Dear all,
When I login into a Windows Server 2003, Mac OS X (and for that matter Mac OS 9) Finder windows do not refresh as fast as we would like them to. It takes me about 10 minutes or more. I have to close out of, or collapse if in List view, the window, and reopen it to force a redraw.
    Please help.
    Thanks

  • Spotlight (& Find) window keeps refreshing

When I search in Spotlight or open a Finder window and put something in the Search box, the windows will start to get populated, then clear out and refresh instead of just resorting. Does this about every 5-10 seconds.
I don't believe it used to do this.
Any way to keep it from doing this?

  • Finder window  "refresh" issue

Since upgrading to Mac OS X (10.4.10) on my work mac yesterday, my finder window seems to have a mind of its own.
The finder window opens at start up (which is okay) but if I minimize it or close it, it will reappear in one and a half minutes, popping up in front of whatever document I'm using. When it reappears it seems as though the contents of the desktop and the finder window are being automatically "refreshed" as the icons disappear for a split second. If I leave the finder window open on the desktop, it still refreshes every one and a half minutes--yes, I've timed it!
I've downloaded and installed the latest updates and tried to see if I could change preferences to fix the issue, but with no success.
Any ideas about how to make the finder window stay put? It's a major pain to try and work when the finder keeps kicking me out of my document every 90 seconds
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

What is happening is that the Finder is crashing, after it crashes it returns to the state it was last in, thus the reappearance of the open window where it was when you started. If you just upgraded my first guess would be some startup item that is not compatible with the system upgrade. Try holding the Shift key when you startup--I can never remember how long you need to hold it, so always keep it down until I see the splash screen with the notice at the top it is in Safe Mode. This will run a number of disk repair, cache cleaning routines, and also disable all third party startup items, as well as Apple's own startup items that are not necessary for the computer to run. Safe boot takes longer to get up and going than normal boot, so be patient. If the Finder does not crash in Safe Mode, restart normally. If the crashes resume you are going to have to disable all startup items, then add them back one at time to determine the culprit. If the Finder continues to crash, even in Safe Mode, then you can try creating a new user, log out of your regular account and in to the new user. If the new user is fine, then the problem is some file in the regular account that is causing the crashes.

  • Finder window does not refresh under yosemite

I have a weird effect on my rMBP with the latest Yosemite:
Very often (not always) when I save a file from an application an open Finder window to the save location does not refresh. The new file is not shown! I can go in with Terminal and everything is fine, the file is there. I can edit its contents (eg. with vi or pico) and I can rename the file. However the Finder still does not show it. Not even closing and re-opening the folder help. The only way I found is to create a new folder and immediately delete it. That forces the Finder to update the window. It looks as if the Finder does not get *some* update events.
I do have XtraFinder installed, but deinstalled it and even after a reboot nothing changed, Finder still does not refresh its display. I cannot tell exactly when this started, but incidentally I run an update some days ago and installed Server 4.0.3 and upates to the latest Pages/Keynote/Numbers (however I do not use those, I am still and will stay with iWork'09).
I use Server on a MBP with dynamic address because I needed virtual domains for local testing, nothing really "serverish". It just provides a nice GUI for easy setting-up of virtual domains.
Any ideas? What can I do?
    Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My finder window is not refreshing after a file is deleted

I open up a new finder window so that I can sort through and delete items from the desktop. After I delete a file, the images displayed in the top of the window no longer match the items that are left.

Might be Finder preferences are corrupted ...
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.finder.plist file to the Trash
See if that made a difference.

  • How to auto close finder window after drag and drop?

In Tiger, I would file away items on my desktop my dragging them to the hard drive and then digging down to the appropriate folder. The finder window would then close automatically after dropping the file. Is there a setting in Snow Leopard that will enable similar functionality? Whenever I complete a drag and drop now the finder window just stays open, which isn't a huge issue, but I'd still like to change it. Thanks!

  • File dates not updated in finder window (Mozilla only)

OK, folks - here's a real puzzler for you. I'm using Mozilla 1.7.12 to maintain a simple set of web pages. When I save an HTML file with Mozilla composer, the file's modify date in the Finder window does not update consistently. (The window is in list view.)
The date does not update as long as that finder window remains in the background. Selecting the window sometimes updates one file date (but not others if I've modified multiple files). Switching to icon view sometimes updates the file dates, sometimes not. Only logging out and back in (i.e., starting a new Finder) guarantees that all dates are current. This only happens with Mozilla composer - saving files with other software results in the date in the finder window updating immediately. It seems to me this behavior is new since I updated to OSX 10.4.3, but I can't be positive.
    Any bright ideas? - Andy
    PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Is this causing any problems, or is it just a quirky behavior? For example, if you change to list view and sort by date, does it still get the dates wrong?
I'm thinking this is probably a really marginal bug, where Composer isn't telling the Finder to refresh the date as most applications do, but then, Mozilla does a lot of unMaclike things. Eventually the Finder figures out that the files have been updated though. There are probably a host of ways you can force it to update, as you've already discovered. You can also force it to update with a simple AppleScript:
    tell application "Finder"
update every item of window 1
    end tell
This tells the Finder to update everything in the frontmost window to match what's on the disk.

  • 10.4.3 File Size Shown Incorrectly in Finder Window

Tiger 10.4.3 --- Sometimes file sizes don't display correctly in Finder windows. For example, I was just downloading a bunch of large files from an FTP site. They were all 44.1Mb in size. After they finished DL'ing, some of the file sizes showed a much smaller file size. But cmd-I on those files and the correct size is displayed.
Some of these files show up with the correct size, but only after waiting a loooong time...
Can anyone tell me why don't file sizes show up correctly? Or immediately? Any help will be appreciated!

Is this causing any problems, or is it just a quirky behavior? For example, if you change to list view and sort by date, does it still get the dates wrong?

  • Help please: Refreshing a window

    Hello,
I would like to refresh a window so I have
    try
tell application "Finder" to update folder "My folder" of desktop
    end try
It compiles but does not work, I have to do this:
    try
tell application "Finder" to close folder "My folder" of desktop
tell application "Finder" to open folder "My folder" of desktop
    end try
That compiles and works, but the opening and closing of "My folder" is obvious to the user.
    How could I improve that?
    Thanks.

Lennox, you could try using this free shell utility. It has worked just fine for me. Here is the link:
    http://osxutils.sourceforge.net/
The man page you want is "/usr/local/bin/wsupdate" if you don't specify a file then the finder windows should be updated. Here is a example of using this shell command.
set Icon_From to choose file with prompt "Choose the file you want to copy the icon from?" without invisibles
set Icon_To to choose file with prompt "Choose the file you want to copy the icon to?" without invisibles
    my ReplaceIcon(IconFrom, Icon_To)
    on ReplaceIcon(FromFile, To_File)
    try
do shell script "/usr/local/bin/seticon" & space & (quoted form of (POSIX path of From_File)) & space & (quoted form of (POSIX path of To_File))
    try
do shell script "/usr/local/bin/wsupdate" & space & (quoted form of (POSIX path of To_File))
    on error Error_Message
display dialog Error_Message giving up after 2
    return false
    end try
    on error Error_Message
display dialog "Requires osxutils from http://osxutils.sourceforge.net/" giving up after 3
    return false
    end try
    end Replace_Icon
