10.6.4 with Filevault - random freeze at login

Hello,
I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing this issue:
When logging in into account on Mac running 10.6.4 with Filevault turned on, the system will randomly freeze showing beach-ball or the mouse cursor (black arrow pointer). It does not respond to any key presses any mouse clicks. Only powering off shuts off the computer. On next boot it either does the same thing or logs in the user account - again randomly.
I created multiple user accounts (both admin and limited user) with same effect when Filevault is turned on. It happens in situations when the system is loading other extensions, say Little Snitch, Menu Meters or none at all.
The freezing goes away as soon as Filevault is turned off, no matter if the OS is loading start-up items or not.
I have formatted the hard disk and did a complete re-install, Archive-Install, talked with Apple Support but the problem remains unresolved. All suggestions are greatly appreciated.
What I see in the OS's secure.log is:
10-10-28 12:00:02 PM authorizationhost[49979] Failed to authenticate user (tDirStatus: -14090).

You most likely had a corrupted system prior to upgrading. The solution is to reinstall OS X. Snow Leopard's installer will replace the current system with a new one but preserve your Home folder, third-party applications, network prefs, etc. Hopefully this will fix the problem. If it does then reinstall the 10.6.4 combo updater.

  • TS3742 MacBook Pro 13" with Mountain Lion Freezing at login and getting Kernel errors

Ive been working on a friends MacBook Pro 13" with mountain lion for about a week now. It is having intermittent kernal panic errors on boot up only. It is also freezing up frequently at apple logo. Disk check passed, reformatted and reinstalled os. Switched out Ram. Still happening. Can anyone help.

    Linc Davis,
I hope this is what you were requesting. I deleted out the UUID but as far as hang reports, wasn't sure what that would look like so I am sorry if that is included in this. Please let me know what you think.
Thank you for your help in this.

  • Random freezes with kernel 2.6.34 and xorg 1.8

The other day I upgraded the kernel to version 2.6.34 and at the same time xorg-server to 1.8 (along with input drivers and video drivers). From that moment, I suffer from random freezes, the system is completely locked up; the screen doesn't blank, though. The system appears to be perfectly fine, but after some minutes it will freeze.
As far as I can remember, the freezes only occur when using a webbrowser. Chromium is my default browser, but also Firefox and Konqueror caused the system to freeze completely when I want to open a webpage. Other network programs such as irssi can run for hours and they didn't seem to cause any havoc.
At first I thought this might be caused by some instability in the latest xf86-video-ati driver, so I downgraded back to xorg-server 1.7. Still the same symptoms, so I am pretty sure now there's something in the kernel. So I went back to xorg-server 1.8 and downgraded the kernel to 2.6.33. So far, the system hasn't let me down, yet. Also, I uninstalled the madwifi packages on my system so I'm using the ath5 drivers shipped with the kernel. That change doesn't seem to make a difference.
I am not exactly sure what exactly could cause this, there's no trace in any log file to be found. My suspicion is that it's network related.
The hardware is a Thinkpad T42 with an ATI Radeon Mobility 9600 (r300) chip and an Atheros wireless card.
Anyone else with similar experiences with this hardware? I can't think of a way how to properly debug this. I know I can bisect, but that's time consuming and perhaps it's quicker to ask around first before I walk down that road. Any suggestions are welcome on how to track this down.

The last time I used arch was to do the updates, just got back to using it and crash!
Mine boots up to the point of the UDev events, but when I change the boot line to use /dev/sdxx instead of the /dev/disk/by-id/ xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx I go to the next step where the video mode changes, then it freezes.  Half the other time it would stop at udev and either blank out totally or just stop.  I don't even get a full bootup (standard or fallback).  My other archs boot just fine.
Downgraded the kernel to the immediate previous kernel before .34 and booted upto the point of the window manager, so I think it's a problem with either the video driver or the xorg, because they were both updated at the same time, but the kernel may be a bit buggy also. (Of course, using the chroot and the arch install CD appropriate for my arch).  Also, it only shows up on one screen on the dual headed setup, which makes obvious which one isn't working.
When the kernel calls the videomode (same one that can be called from kernel command line), that's when it is dying.  The only machine I'm having trouble with is the same one that will be the only one to do any updates, maybe this will fix the problem.
The updates didn't make any difference.  It still hangs at the videomode change.  Was able to get a read out one time that one of the video cards had wrong ROM contents?
Have had to use the top level ftp.archlinux.org just to get the most recent updates, without having to fish through mirrors.
My presumption is that the kernel/video hardware is just not working in console mode or the graphics mode.
Strangely enough both of my hardwares, one is a mobile intel 945 and the other is a desktop 945.  The mobile works without a hitch, and the desktop freezes.

  • Random Freeze with { UNC } error - hard disk problems?

    Hi,
My laptop randomly freezes for a couple of seconds frequently. I am running 2.6.30-ARCH in a dell inspiron. I did a check on the /var/log/errors.log and found the follwing block of errors occuring over and over again as soon as the freeze up happens.

i did some googling and found out this may be due to damaged areas in the hard disk or the hard disk is about to fail. (is it true?)
I followed some other thread, used system rescue cd and did a fsck -f on the root partition. I still keep getting these randon freezes. is there anything i can do to fix these?
    your help is appreciated.

I used the 80 wire cable that came with the board and ran the WD's jumperless (cable select) with the drive at one end and the blue connector on the MB.  I also tried a 40 wire cable with the drive set to master.  Both of these scenarios worked fine on my other computer, which I switched back and forth several times to prove to myself that the drives were fine and the cables were ok.
I did run spinrite from dos and was always able to work with the drives as long as I selected LBA access and disabled [Integrated Peripherals]->[VIA OnChip IDE Device]->[IDE DMA Transfer Access].
The MB never autodetected any of the drives correctly.  Only when I used the the older WD 1200JB with access mode set to [LBA] and disabled IDE DMA Transfer Access did i get partial success.  Admittedly, this is a very obscure problem and not many others are hitting. Hopefully the service guys will be able to sort it out since it is easy to reproduce.
I never used that JPWR2 connector, the manual stated that it was to supply power to the graphics card but my card has a regular 4 pin molex that i could get directly from the power supply.  Wonder if the board would blow up if someone stuck the 4pin lead from their PSU in there ... maybe not such a great feature.
I did not try a single CPU or run memtest86 - things I probably should have tried.  The problem to me seemed to be the integrated IDE controller was just not working correctly, so after changing ram, power supply, drives etc and seeing the exact same problem with the hard disk, I became more convinced it was just a flakey board.  Plus the need to clear CMOS and reboot constantly to get the board to post added to theory.
Oh well, it is in RMA land now, so when it comes back I will let you know how it goes.

  • HP DV6000 randomly freezing with Arch Linux

    Hello,
Just to clarify I am working with Arch Linux as a Web Developer, therefore I do have special needs such as having 20+ tabs open with vital information in different pages.
I can assure that after using Windows XP, Windows 7, xUbuntu, Linux Mint and Ubuntu I have never had such breaks or freezes in this machine.
The freezes are identifiable when the mouse seems to be very slow to move, the computer very slow to respond, the cursor of the icon does not change within the context where it is, I can't even open the menu bar to access the terminal (using Terminator).
After noticing these randomly freezes, I've started to keep the Terminator open with top command inserted. After seeing the values of percentage usage in CPU or RAM, the levels don't even go up more than 20%. However, I notice that the laptop suddenly starts heating a lot.
The solution is just to wait with some luck about 10 minutes. If it does not go on after that, I need to turn off the computer by pressing the button or unplugging the battery (yeah, the battery is dead too).
Some main packages I currently use are:
    - Cinnamon
    - Filezilla
    - Netbeans PHP IDE 8.0
    - Skype
    - Geany
    - 7-Zip FM
    - Adobe Flash Player
    - Chromium (my main browser)
    - Firefox
    - SSH
    - Htop
    - VLC Media Player
    - Terminator
Any ideas of what could it be?
    Thanks!

Yes, you are correct, I do not have any swap. Would I benefit from it? I guess I never used it.
After the occurance you mean, after the freeze? I will try to do it, but it is rare the case when the computer is able to not freeze at all.
    Got it now:

  • HP Pavilion p6670t desktop randomly freezing with distortion to monitor (suspect hardware issues)

    HP Pavilion p6670t desktop
    Intel Core i3 550
    Windows 7 64-bit
    Intel HD graphics
I get random freezing on my computer with distortion to the screen (some of the colors look off, and I see thick purple vertical lines).
I'm not running any labor intensive processes (sometimes not even doing anything when it freezes). The temperatures are cool.
    No BSOD.
I ran HP's hardware diagnostics tools, and everything passed. Ran Memtest on each individual stick and all together, and they all passed as well.
I suspect video hardware problems, but since it is integrated with my mainboard, I was wondering if anyone would have any suggestions before I go out and buy new hardware.
    Thanks!

when the blue screen comes up next time, write down any error codes (long string of numbers) this will give you an idea on what the problem could be. write them down and either come back here or google the code... it sounds like hardware failing... could be your hard drive or maybe ram failing. one thing you can do is open it up and make sure you remove all the dust and lint from the inside and you can re-seat your ram chips along with checking your Hard Drive cable/ribbon

  • Random freeze, always when using 'save as' or 'open with' or 'attach'

For quite a while now I get random freezes (no specific event started this, and I cannot remember if it did it pre-10.6 it used to be very sporadic and gotten worse over time). I first thought it had to do with my temp control in my graphic card (RadeonX1900), since I had a lot of freezes when playing games. I controlled that by cleaning the dust and using smcFanControl, but I still have the random freezes. So I think this is something unrelated to temp control...
It happens randomly, sometimes once a week, sometimes 10 times a day, and it doesn't seem to relate to the amount of usage and what kind of usage on the mac.
But always these kind of events triggers it: 'save as' in any application. 'open with' in the finder. 'attach' in Mail. So whenever an application needs to show me what is on my computer (excuse my lack of technical terms). And it seems to happen more often when timemachine is backing up.
When it happens the only thing to do is to restart by holding the power button.
I run cocktail once a week, I have cleaned up using Clean My Mac. I have done a reinstall of snow leopard.
I would like to avoid doing an erase and install since I do not have the discs for a lot of software and the ones I do have, it would take forever to get everything installed and running again.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Danielle

I've used that version on Tiger quite well, but if you're worried, I can give you a direct download link to an older archived one, (batchmod_137.dmg).
But I think something stranger is going on now, I'd try this Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any UPS so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • Random freezes with INSERT-HANG-DETECTED in system log

    Hi,
Since a few months I am experiencing random freezes on my early 2011 MacBook Pro 15". Sometimes they occur every few minutes and sometimes they can be away for hours. During the freeze the system is not responding and often a spinning beachball is shown. After the freeze the system resumes to work as normal.
In the system log (/var/log/system.log) I noticed the following messages which seem to have a timestamp corresponding to the freeze:
    WebProcess[151]: INSERT-HANG-DETECTED: Tx time:28.505937, # of Inserts: 1, # of bytes written: 4875, Did shrink: NO
Does anyone know what these messages mean?
It doesn't seem to be related to the application that is in use during the freeze. Most of the time I only use Mail, Safari, Calendar, Terminal and Preview. My system (10.6.8) is fully up-to-date. The Activity Monitor does not show exceptional CPU or Memory usage.
What could also be relevant is that the freezes started to appear a week after I replaced a defective Hitachi HDD with a Crucial M4 SDD.
Does anyone have had the same issues with this SSD?
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Maarten

This is an update to the question above.
I put in the original HDD and had the same issues. At one time it didn't even boot anymore. Then I sent in my MBP for repair. They first replaced the HDD with no success. Then they replaced the logic board and all issues dissapeared.

  • IMac (i3 2010) random freezing and now with 3 beeps

Hi I have a 21" iMac i3 base model with 8Gb of Ram (see below).
Ever since I got the mac about 10 months ago it has been randomly freezing up, becoming completely unresponsive to any input (keyboard mice etc), and can only be fixed by a hard reboot (holding down power button).
It can happen while I am away at lunch and I come back to find it frozen on the screen saver. Other times I'm just browsing the web (nb has happens with safari, firefox, and chrome). While others times I have been using the system to its fullest. There never seems to be a reproducible way of triggering it. I can go for a week without issue, and then it can happen 6+ times a day, and they go back to being fine again for awhile. Although it has been getting progressively worse over time and more constant.
I have tried repairing permissions (disk utility and onyx). Defraged the drive (drive genius), run TechTools pro and it passed all the tests. I don't have access to the orginal disks (work iMac) so running the AHT is not possible, as is a clean instal.
I updated to 10.6.8 this week, and now when it freezes, it is now accopained by 3 loud beeps...pause...3 beeps etc etc.
This suggests that it could be a memory problem, but I have never had a problem during the boot up process, and as I said it has passed the memory test on both TechTools6 and Rember, I'm not sure if this is the case.
Because the system completely frezzes, there is no log or error reports created, meaning that pin-pointing the issue or even having proof for the tech-guys/Apple is difficult.
Has anyone got any suggestions on a fix, or how I might be able to get an error report, or how I could induce the problem on que.
    Thanks heaps
    a

Ok so it definitely appears to be the RAM. I have found a way to reproduce the crashing....Running Prime95. Its normally takes about 15-30min on the stresstest to get the system to lock up.
But here is the strange thing. It only seems to work if I have the full 8Gb installed.
I have run each 2Gb stick by itself without issues.
And then run 6Gb, changing the empty slot each time, and again no crashing.
I found the following thread also has similar issues, with the RAM the most likely cause.
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15610565#15610565
I can discount USB,wifi, bluetooth as I tried this and still managed to get a crash.
But I did have screen sharing on so I am now testing if I can run the 8Gb with this disabled.
Will report back with my findings.

  • Random freeze of iMac with Tiger 10.4.5

Hello, since a few weeks my iMac freezes almost regular but I can not say if it is due to an application or anything else as it happens complete random. Sometimes it happens after a few minutes, sometimes after hours but in 8 of 10 "on times" the Mac freezes. I can only turn him off...
Does anybody know if there is a way to track last actions and investigate what the reason for these freezes are?
    Thanks in advance. KM
    iMac 800Mhz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Open the Console app in the Utilities folder. Click on the Logs icon in the toolbar to open the sidebar logs list. You can examine the console and system logs as well as any crash logs to see if you can find anything helpful.
If your random freezes occur only when using a particular application, then there may be a bad preference file associated with that app. If the freezes are occuring almost always when you use Safari, then there are some things you can try. If the freezes are accompanied by a kernel panic alert, then there are other things to consider.
In the meanwhile it cannot hurt to do the following:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

Why does my new MacBook pro retina with 16gb ram keep randomly freezing

    Hi ..
A new Macbook Pro should not randomly freeze.
You have 14 calendar days  from the time your items are delivered to initiate a return as noted here.

  • No more "random freezing" with my MbP ....

...since I installed Safari 4 Beta 10 days ago!
Before Safari 4, I had 2-3 freezes per day when using the 9600 graphics Chip. Not just using Safari but using all kinds of programs (with safari closed!). This has been a huge problem for many people.
See this link for more info: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1767718&tstart=0&messageID=908 2914#9082914
Now, since I installed Safari 4 beta: not a single freeze in 10 days! and some other people see the same thing.
This is very weird no? The system is supposed to be designed so that a single program can not crash the whole system, no?! So now that the new version of Safari solves a permanent system crash problem, it looks like the problem was safari 3.x.x, which should not happen! Or...maybe Safari 4 contains also some System updates that were not published...
Well at least the problem seems to be solved, hope it doesn't come back! Would have been nice to know what the exact problem was though...

Unless I'm remembering wrong, there have been incidences of "random freezing" after installing Safari 4.
The system is supposed to be designed so that a single program can not crash the whole system, no?!
It is. The random freezing is very likely not a software issue though, so this point does not apply to the issue at all. The system software is not "crashing" in these cases of random freezing. It is much more likely that there is some hardware issue that causes the system to just freeze.
Or...maybe Safari 4 contains also some System updates that were not published...
This is actually likely, but I doubt that it fixed your freezing issue. Webkit (the underlying engine of Safari) was substantially upgraded in Safari 4. Webkit (being an open-source standard that Apple develops) is also used in some other areas of OS X for rendering HTML content. So, when the Webkit engine is updated as a result of a Safari update, there are changes occurring at a system level.
Again, I would really really really doubt that this update fixed your freezing. However, if it isn't freezing anymore, then I guess we shouldn't complain.

  • Strange problem with desktop applications randomly freezing

    Hi guys,
Over the past two weeks I've noticed that a few, very specific applications, have been crashing horrifically for me. Specifically, they're Firefox, Chromium and Eclipse and anything else powered by Java as well. I found the Eclipse issue people talked about on here regarding the upgrade to Xulrunner, but they only partially fix my problem.
What happens is the applications will randomly freeze, completely. The gui locks up and the window becomes a grey box, and the only way I can get rid of the window is with kill -9.
I've tried figuring out what's wrong, but honestly I have no idea. I'm running 32bit Arch, with a Nvidia 8800GTX card on the official binary drivers, using Openbox. Everything as of the time of this post is up to date throug Pacman.
Also, with the amount of problems I'm seeing on Gnome3 in here, what about creating a temporary sub-forum to hold them all? It would certainly tidy this one up a lot.

My system has started "freezing". Actually, usually when I'm browsing the net, Chromium stops loading pages. Conky stops updating, and usually I can't switch to another programs. I can't start xkill from menu, menu opens but nothing starts. If I run "ls" etc in Terminal, nothing happens
I can however control+alt+F1 to CLI, but if I try to login nothing happens. If doesn't help even if I kill X (I started it with startx). And if I don't kill X, I can't go back from CLI with control+alt+F7, there's just a black screen.
I'm using Nvidia drivers also, and XFCE4. This started happening some time ago, I think I was using Gnome2 back then. And I have updated my system, and this has happened at least with 3 kernel versions. There's nothing on logs. Well, actually, there's "TCP: Possible SYN flooding on port 6881. Sending cookies" errors on everything.log. But those don't happen when system freezes. And sometimes Chromium stops loading pages but other programs don't freeze, I think it's a problem with cache or something.
Not really sure if this everything happens because of Chromium. I think I'm gonna switch back to Firefox and see what happens. Usually I'm running Chromium, Opera (use it just for a couple of pages), couple of Terminals and Kaffeine.
