10.6.5 loses keyboard after period of non-use

I've noticed after upgrading to 10.6.5 that my keyboard will not work when I come back after an extended period of time. At first, after applying only the 10.6.5 update, neither keyboard nor mouse would work unless I unplugged and replugged the keyboard (the mouse is connected directly to the KB). Later, I installed the combo update, and then the mouse worked but the keyboard still wouldn't. This is after my display sleeps - as long as I continue to use the computer, everything works fine.
I have a mid-2009 Mac Pro 2.66 GHz quad-core (Nahalem) but with the older (clear, G5) keyboard and a mighty mouse.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.
[RICHR]

Have had the same problem for awhile. Occurs for me after a long period of inactivity - mostly overnight - and I stopped putting computer to sleep at night because sometimes I could not wake it. I can't confirm if it started at 10.6.5 but that seems about the right timing. 10.6.6 does not fix it.
Another thread suggested turning off spaces; I will let you know if that help.
My keyboard is the white extended with a Mighty Mouse plugged in. Anyone else tried with another keyboard?

  • Does ColdFusion 11 go into sleep mode after a period of non-use?

I've just installed CF11 on my cloud server (running Windows Server 2008 R2) for a shopping cart app using SQL Express Edition in the backend. After periods of inactivity, especially every morning, when I go into my app, it clocks for about a minute then errors out. Eventually, after another try, I'm able to run my app but it's sluggish for another couple clicks then it's back to normal.
I've been running this app on an older version of CF for almost a decade (I just upgraded to CF11 last month) and this problem never happened during that time. Can you provide any guidance on how I can fix this problem?

Unfortunately, you really only answered the first question: Rackspace.  I would double check with them to make sure your virtual server itself isn't going into a sleep mode during off-hours.
For question 2, you will need to log into CF Administrator and note the Application and Session timeout settings, and let us know.  Also, you need to examine your Application.cfm or Application.cfc and see if server-wide timeouts are being overridden (look for ApplicationTimeout and SessionTimeout).
For question 3: you said in your initial post "After periods of inactivity, especially every morning".  This implies there are periods where NO users are using the app, and is quite likely when your timeouts are occurring.  If the application times out in ColdFusion, the application is stopped and the first request after it is stopped will restart it.  Depending on what you have in your Application.cfm/.cfc, this could either be a very quick process or a very lengthy one.
Another possibility is the database.  Depending on the level of activity and if you have any scheduled database tasks running (like database maintenance/index rebuilding or SSIS packages running), the database itself could be the issue.  SQL Server Express is throttled to only use one CPU core, 1 GB of memory, and has a size limit on databases (the limit varies depending on which release of SQL Server you are using).

  • Start-up problem disappears after several months non-use? Real?

Old Satellite laptop suddenly would not complete start-up when turned on ---- this was more than 18 months ago.  So I stopped using it, charged the battery and left it for 18 months.  NO usage for 18 months; maybe the battery drained during this time, maybe not.
When I then took laptop to a diagnostic technicianafter those months of non-use, the computer started-up with NO PROBLEM.  (I actually do not remember if I recharged the battery just before taking to the diagnostic servicer or not).
Was the nonusage for several months and battery drainage meaninful or not?  Would this be just a temporary unknowable problem which disappeared?  Since starting the computer several times to try, the computer still starts normally and the only problem I can observe is a stress in the CD drive upon trying to use certain CD's; otherwise, the computer still seems to be working normally, and shows no trouble in start-up.
    I do not understand.

    Dbrown and others interested,
    Here are the basic details:
Laptop Satellite 1415-s115, purchased new in year 2003, Windows XP Home Ed., S.P. 1.
In use a few times per month for about 2 to 2 and a half years.  Used for dial-up internet, transferring and copying files, putting onto CD's, and some use for software development.  Then, almost daily use from 2006 to mid 2008 for wireless internet use and sometimes transferring and storing files, putting files onto CD.
Suddenly in late spring, 2008 Start-Up would not finish when I turned on computer.  After each and every attempt, 15, 20, more minutes, startup was still not finished.  In this process, the computer was useless.
Retail technician began an initial try to startup in the retail shop and gave, after various aimless discussions, that testing would take a few hours to do thoroughly and the cost for diagnosis would be ~140 dollars - before any repair attempt.  So, at that, the computer was still useless, and our decision was to just store the apparantly dead computer at home, and buy a new laptop computer.
Early summer 2008 through late autumn 2009, I used the new laptop computer, now at Windows Vista on a different model Satellite laptop.
A day in late autumn 2009 --- Let me find what an authorized Toshiba service technician can tell me from his diagnosis!  I explained the problem to him.  After a couple of minutes, he showed me the old laptop was fully started-up, showing no problem.  He said "play around with it a little"; so I did play around with it a little and found no problem.  Then, remembering the difficulty from 18 months earlier, I said, do a diagnosis to be sure.  He ran tests overnight for several hours.  I then was able to pick up my old laptop the next day and he found NO problem during the diagnostic tests.  He turned on the computer again and let me play around with some of the programs to see for myself.
Since bringing the old laptop back from the authorized toshiba technician, NO REPAIR NEEDED, I have started it up about two or three times per week and have done a few things and find NO problem with startup and nearly no problem with anything...... just one difficulty with the optical disc CD drive when I put in certain CD's; either something about the paper labels which I used, or something about a CD-R being recorded as "Open" instead of "Closed", ... I'm not yet sure.  Those certain CD's seem to suddenly cause a motor noise and the machine becomes extrreeeeeeeemmely slow responding  --- only with certain CD's, since most do not seem to cause this particular problem.  (These same certain CD's seem to cause some difficulties when I try to read them in another old, desktop machine).
(In case readers in this thread are interested, just two days ago, I updated to XP S.P. 3 on the old laptop)

  • Airport Express error 15006 after period of no use

I have a network composed of a Time Capsule connected via ethernet to a Mac Mini running iTunes which broadcasts to three Airport Express stations. As long as I'm actively using it, I don't have any problems. When I come home from work, I can always count on an error 15006 in iTunes saying one of the Airport Express devices has disconnected. At this point, I have to stop and restart iTunes and everything is fine again. Since the Mac Mini is headless, running as a media server, this means pulling out my laptop and getting a remote desktop on the Mac Mini to restart iTunes - a daily ritual for months now.
I see a lot of discussion in here about restarting AEs and flashing firmware and whatnot, but it seems to me that iTunes just doesn't handle this situation properly, an error dialog is unnecessary when it could apparently just rescan the network and repair itself as it does on startup. Is there some other fix for this scenario? iTunes developers, could you please handle this sort of error differently with a more proactive approach?

    What a pain!
After the investment, and getting everything tuned in and working perfectly, having that outstanding issue was... quite painful to my psyche, yes
If you have a suggestion you should direct it via:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/
I did that... no feedback, of course, but it sure does seem like the last iTunes update addressed it. The dialog is still left up, but it seems to rescan the airport express devices and make them available again, for instance, in the Remote application. Keeping my fingers crossed, but it's been awhile since I hauled out the remote desktop and restarted iTunes because of that error - it was a daily event.

  • Internet access dies after short period of non use.

On my late 2008 MacPro, Yosemite.  When I leave the computer for 10 or 15 minutes or so (never really timed it), upon return there is no internet activity.  It resumes about two minutes after an internet request is made, either a check mail or webpage request, and I have to sit there and wait. Then it is back to normal speed as long as I continue using the internet.  I check in with my machine many times in a day and this is driving me crazy.  During the wait, I look at my connection and it says it is actively connected to the internet and displays an IP address.  My other devices and computers sharing the same modem (both wireless and ethernet wired) never have this issue.  I've switched from ethernet cable to wireless and back since I'm hooked to both and no difference. I've quit and re-opened Mail and Safari. No help. The machine just waits for a long time before activity returns again even though it says it is connected.  I've checked the obvious places, but I'm stumped with this one.  Thanks for any advice.

Does it happen when connected to another network?
Does it happen with other devices connected to your network?
Sounds like a network problem to me.

  • My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).  The key behaves the same for the laptop keyboard and for an external Apple keyboard?  This just started in last week after 6 months of use

My left shift key on Macbook Pro Retina (15") is behaving like the F11 key (show/hide open windows).
The left shift key behaves the same on the laptop keyboard and on an external Apple keyboard.
This just started in last week after 6 months of use.  The right shift key and other keys on the keyboard all appear to work correctly.
    Suggestions greatly appreciated.

I have a solution to this issue now after a discussion with Apple Support.  Some where in the last few weeks, there was a change in the key that would do a Show Desktop under the Mission Control settings in the System Preferences.  Even though the key sequence that was shown for the Show Desktop setting did not include the Left SHift key, by changing this first to having no key sequence and applying that and then changing it back to the F11 key, the Left SHift key issue that I was having has cleared up.
A second issue that was uncovered was that the SSD had some issues (uncovered when I ran Disk Utility using the Repair Disk key).  I had to restart and use the Disk Utility through the Command R sequence to get to the stand alone Disk Utility.  The SSD appears to be running better as a result as well.
Hope that this is of use to someone else in the future.

  • Solaris 8 loses keyboard configuration

While installing Solaris 8 on my Dell Latitude laptop, everything works fine until I get to the point that the installation asks me to select the language to be used. When I press "1", the string "^]]229z" is echoed on the screen until the buffer is filled. Since the keyboard works fine up to that point (it allows me to select devices and boot methods) it appears as if the "Solaris Web Start 3.0 Installer" is losing the keyboard configuration. Any suggestions?

    Hi Mark,
There appears to be a problem with the keyboards on Dell laptops. Currently there is a work around that you might want to try if you want to run Solaris 8 on your machine, and this involves using a USB keyboard for installation and subsequent use. If you wish to give it a try, take a look at the following steps:
    1) Attach USB keyboard prior to installation
    2) When the language question is asked respond using the USB keyboard for this step and for all other steps.
However after installation finishes the USB keyboard must still be used for operation.

  • RMI Hang after long period of no use

Occaisonally one of our lightly used RMI servers decides to not accept a new connection. This happens after a long period of no use. The last time it happened I captured a thread dump (THREAD DUMP#1) of the RMI server process.
Just for comparison I then started another client and tried to connect again. See THREAD DUMP#2.
Any suggestions where I should start looking in my code? I have checked the Java bugs database without success.
    Thanks.

According to this thread dump the remote object is
quite prepared to accept a new connection (waiting in
PlainSocketImpl.accept()) but some other remote method
implementation is blocked reading the RMI header.
Perhaps this is the one that is stalling? You may need
to check for too much synchronization, i.e. possible
deadlocks, in your remote method implementations.I do have a limited amount of synchronization in my server side code (too much code to post here) but if my code is deadlocking then won't I see my method(s) in the stack trace? None of my remote methods are synchronized, just some of the server side methods they call. Also, if my code is deadlocking won't this tend to happen during busy periods rather than slack periods?
I have reviewed my code for synchronization deadlock potential but the logon code only ever locks one object.
Could you tell me the difference between "waiting for condition" and "waiting for monitor"? I assume the "waiting for monitor" means the thread waiting get the lock on an object.
    Thanks for your suggestions.
By the way, I forgot to mention in my original post that I'm running Java 1.4.2_05.

  • Possible to control space after periods and commas?

There's a font i'd like to use as a body text font, but sometimes the spaces after periods and commas are inadequate. Is there a way to control this in InDesign? or must this be resolved by manipulating the font in a font editor?
    thanks
    Kurt Hoffman

but sometimes the spaces after periods and commas are inadequate...
I'm not sure either solution will really work well with justified text.
When you say sometimes, it sounds like your text is justified and the space after periods is variable. Peter's GREP solutions would track the space after a period but the amount would still be variable when the text  is justified. So you could also look at the Justification setting for the style:
The default Justification setting which allows a significant difference between min and max word spacing, and no difference in letter spacing:
Changing the Word Spacing to 90% | 100% | 120% and the letter spacing to -2% | 0% | 2% creates a more consistent space after the periods.

  • OSX/SL 10.6.8 all window apps lose keyboard input; mouse and cmd-N work for spaces

Input suddenly stops going to all applications, from MacBook Pro and wireless keyboards, and from "Show Keyboard viewer" (OSX 10.6.8 'Snow Leopard', MacBook Pro). Though the OSX Keyboard Viewer shows the keys onscreen as they are pressed on the MacBook and wireless keyboards. 'Spaces' responds to cmd-N commands, but no input is possible to any running or newly-started 3rd party or Apple-provided application. Killing off applications one by one doesn't recover keyboard input ability;  a complete reboot appears necessary to restore the ability to key input into applications. This happens repeatedly, yet never registers as an OS/X 'crash' because 'Force Quit'ting applications and restarting is still possible using only the magic mouse or trackpad.   No data  whether only logging out and back in would correct the apparent input-focus disconnect of all applications with the window manager. There may be some way to restart the window manager by using the mouse to open up new apps and/or cut and paste characters ( including a carriage return ) or cut and paste entire saved typed commands into a terminal window.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Problems using Keyboard after installing Snow Leopard

hey Everyone I'm using a 13.3" Macbook Pro (summer 2009) and I recently took the plunge of installing Snow Leopard. I've installed the two new upgrades for it as well, but I am having troubles with my keyboard specifically in regards to copy/pasting, using the command Key short cut and even the delete button.
If anyone is having these problems as well let me know! And also if there are any quick fixes for this.

I'm also having an issue with my keyboard after upgrading to snow leopard, but not on my laptops native keyboard, that works just fine.
My issue is that I switched the Control and Command keys in the Keyboard > Modifier Keys... settings for all of the keyboards in the drop down menu so Control = Command and Command = Control.
This change worked correctly for my native laptop keyboard, but my external aluminum USB Apple keyboard (which is plugged into the USB port of my apple LED Cinema Display monitor) did not switch.
I've reset all of the modifier keys back to default settings and started over again several times, I've switch the USB port my keyboard was plugged into to another port on the monitor and even another port on the laptop, but nothing seems to work. It's driving me crazy, please help!

  • MacBook Pro shuts down after periods of inactivity

I had a 6-year old MacBook Pro.  Besides just being a bit old and tired it would attempt to shut down after periods of inactivity.  I tried setting it to never sleep.  I tried the whole reset thing where you take the battery out and hold the power button for 5 seconds.  I bought new memory for it.  Eventually I used it as an excuse to buy a new machine.
Of course I copied my image over to the new MacBook.  Now I know its not a hardware issue because it still happens!
I also have other quirky issues (probably not related, but who knows).
I just cannot get my remote (or any apple remote to work).
I have an empty folder that I can't delete–it crashes the system.
Aperature hangs up all the time
VMware hangs up all the time
Firefox and Chrome both hang up
Sometimes I have to force quit Mail
Is this a good time to do a clean install?

Resetting the SMC doesn't seem to have done anything. The progress bar hasn't reached the end to shut down yet, but so far, it's displaying the same behavior.
