10.6.5 Update Killed Preview App, Causes Occasional Freeze

The update to 10.6.5 has caused havoc on my Mac Mini. It became unresponsive during the update, and has frozen on a couple of other occasions. More importantly, it nuked the Preview app. It is no longer on my machine. When I click an image or PDF, there's a flash, but nothing opens. I ran the installation disk to check for disk damage and permission problems, but everything checked out. I then downloaded and reinstalled the 10.6.5, hoping it would bring back Preview, but no luck. After researching the problem on the net, I also tried deleting a few files from the library -> preferences folder. No luck.
I found a couple of people on CNET post that they are having the same kind of problem: http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6126_102-505971.html
I called Apple and the tech support guy's only solution was to wipe the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. He offered to escalate the problem to another tech guy, but they were closed for the night.
Does anyone have any solutions to this problem? I am positive the update caused this problem, and hope Apple issues a software fix.

...is Preview actually in your applications folder but just won't launch, or are you saying it doesn't exist at all?
Tech support guy isn't quite right, you could run an 'archive and install' from the 10.6 disk, which would leave your personal data in place...you'd just have to run updates again afterward, because it'd take you back to 10.6.
If you re-ran the combo update, the archive/install's probably your only bet...I'm not sure if Preview is one of the bundled applications under the optional installs on the 10.6 disk. Also not sure if you could just copy it from the applications folder of someone else's machine.

  • Update to 7.1 causes screen freeze upon closing from Safari and slow wifi connection.

I updated my iPad 3 last weekend.   Right after the update the screen froze and I had to restart it by holding the home button and on/off switch.  Ever since then the screen freezes a minimum of once a day. This normally happens when closing Safari.  I've also been kicked off of Facebook several times and brought back to the home screen.  Not to mention my wifi internet connection is running super slow at home and work. Any ideas of what this is happening?   My husband updated his iPad 2 and is not experiencing these issues.  We think the update may have been corrupted but not sure what to do.  Thanks in advance for help on this.

The screen froze again yesterday.  This time it happened while I was in the photos app.  The screen starts to shrink when I pinch it but it doesn't close all the way.  I get a small "thumbnail" of the screen which gets stuck.  I am very good about making sure I don't have a lot of open apps, I try to close them all everyday by double clicking the home button and swiping them up. If you have any ideas please let me know.  I am going to try and keep a log of when this happens, what is open in the background and which app gets frozen.  Thanks again for the help on the internet slowness.  It is working fine now.  Not sure if this makes a difference but this is a refurbished iPad 3 that is about a year and a half old.

  • Preview app freezing and slowing down MBP

Since I updated to OS Mavericks my preview app has not been functioning properly. When the app is open when viewing PDFs a window (accompanied by a progress bar) pops up quite frequently that says "Saving changes... '#' documents remaining", with the # sign representing any number of documets. Often, the number of documents "remaining to be saved" progressively increases from 1 to 8 or so, despite there being only one document open. While the app is doing these "auto saves" my computer is slowed down significantly and while these interuptions occur I am usually unable to do anything else.
I will also add that the size of the PDF files that I view are rather large, on average 70-80 MB, although I'm not sure if that is the reason for the issue because before I updated to Mavericks I didn't have this problem. And the problem does also seem to occur with smaller sized files as well.
My computer usage is usually minimal when this occurs, typically only Safari is open in the background. I was advised to reset my SMC, which I did, but the problem is still occurring. Any additional advice or solutions would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Update: The Preview app is using a lot of memory and I don't know why.
With activity monitor on, I notice that the memory usage for the app spikes considerably when viewing PDFs, especially when I scroll, exactly the same problem as you, loveceratops. When a PDF is initially openend, the activity monitor shows memory usage around 50 MB, but when I scroll within the PDF the memory usage shoots all the way up to 500 or 600 MB. It's at this point that the glitches preciptating in Preview begin to occur.
I've tried deleting/recreating the preview app's ".plist" files in the "Preferences" and "Containers" folders, but that has not solved the issue. I want to try to reinstall Preview, and I just might, but I'm also considering reinstalling OS Mavericks since that may be easier; but I'm concerned that the same problem would still keep happening since I'd be recovering all my files from Time Machine after the reinstall.
Any help solving this issue would be much appreciated, thanks in advance. This is a very frustrating problem.

  • Preview.app crashes whenever I use a key command

I've had this very annoying problem for quite a while now, and so far I haven't been able to find a solution for it.
Whenever I use a key command in Preview.app it either freezes or crashes or both. I can use all the menu options, just not trigger them with a key command.
So I can use the app just fine, just so long as I remember to not use the key commands, but it's just that having been using apple key commands since 1986 it's really hard to not acidentally hit any of them while in Preview.app, and every so often I accidentally do … sometimes losing unsaved changes in the process.
I'm not sure when the problem first occurred, but it dates back to Lion at least and it's still there in Mountain Lion as well.
I thought it might be some extension or some background app clashing with Preview.app, but when starting up holding shift the problem remains.
And the problem is local to my user account only, and Preview.app works just fine in other user accounts.
So I figured I'd just trash the Preview.app prefs and all would be well, but no go. Unless there are some more hidden prefs of some kind that I don't know about.
So, something local to my user account only screws up key commands in Preview.app only, and I can't figure out what or how to solve it.
I may end up having to migrate the contents and settings of my account to a new user account to solve this, but that soundsa lot like surrendering doesn't it? ;-)
And I thought I'd give it one more try to figure this out before I put myself through a migration process. ;-)
    Ideas anyone?

    Ha! Fixed it!
Kept reading all "Preview+plist" threads and found this one: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17195650#17195650
And sure enough, trashing ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Preview/ reset the preferences for Preview.app and now all key commands work without crashing.
But if erasing that folder, and more importantly the plist in it, did reset the preferences, that would suggest the preferences were being saved there. So I now changed the prefs and quit the app, and then trashed the containers folder again, and restarted the app. But strangely the prefs remained. So I thought, well if the prefs were being stored there, maybe erasing that plist made Preview reinstate the regular plist in the regular Preferences folder? But no go, as there's still no regular Preview plist in the regular Preferences folder.
So now, there's no regular plist, and erasing the Containers folder no longer resets the prefs, but changes to prefs are still being saved somewhere … so where the **** are they being saved now? It's like they just keep burrowing down further into the ground with every attempt to erase them. What the **** is going on? ;-)
Anyways, the initial problem is solved, so … maybe I should just let the mystery remain? ;-)

I have just experienced this exact same issue.
I have been adding text notes and highlighting to a PDF document that is saved on an external USB drive.  When I left work yesterday I told preview to save the changes.  I did notice the Saving Changes dialog appear and before I left it said 3 documents remainin, even though I only had one document open in preview.  My USB drive was connected and mounted when I left work.
On my return in the morning I noticed that the Saving Changes dialog had not gone away.  For some reason my USB drive was unmounted and I had the OS X message about ejecting drives before disconnecting them so I re-seated the USB cable and my drives remounted.  Immeditately after doing this the Saving Changes dialog in preview started counting up from 3 to 8.  It is now sitting at 8 and the progress bar is empty.
I had a look in Console and did not notice anything strange.  I also grabbed a sample of the Preview process using Activity Monitor but I have little clue what to look for.  Whilst I was running console and activity monitor and such I did notice that the Saving Changes dialog has climbed further to 14 now and it appears to increase whenever I bring preview into focus or move away from preview.  I appear to have no option but to force quit preview so that I may continue working.
    My PDF document is 26.5M.
    I have a Macbook Air (13-inch, Mid 2011), 1.7GHz i5 with 4GB RAM running OSX Mavericks 10.9.1.

  • Preview.app - not functioning? Lost? How to update a recovered version?

    Dear Apple community!
I upgraded my MBP from Leopard to SnowLeopard (finally).
Everything went fine, but I found two versions of preview.app in my programs directory afterwards (yes, one in the specific folder where I once put it to).
Both were version 5 - the first was build 501 the second build 502. Not needing both I deleted the older one (using my PathFinder file browser). To my horrified surprise (after emptying the trash... and before Time Machine had its initial run), my preview.app stopped working. It opened itself, but that was it. Nothing else showed up. Nothing could help, but a proper reinstall of that app - nicely hidden in my SL install DVD. Here is, what I did:
I used the Shareware "Pacifist" to open that DVD and got the possibility to reinstall JUST the lost app - in my case, "preview". Everything went fine, preview started to work again.
    Two problems remained so far:
1st: The preview.app that I could reinstall onto my MBP came without the german language pack that it had before (from the very same SL DVD) - just a minor issue, but maybe some of you could provide a workaround.
2nd: The preview.app I reinstalled came in version 501 - so I lost the updated one and do not know how to update the older version to the current state of art. The Apple software update assistant could not locate it. Any suggestions?
Ok, that's what I did, hope it'll help you, if you once face the same problem.
    Thanks for answers and commentaries,
    have a good one,
    The MacManiacMan

Thx for the suggestion of a fresh install... I fear you might be right, but that solution isn´t providing me much happiness...
By the way, how to avoid another disaster of the same kind? Is there a possibility to get rid of those app doublets (that I usually find after 10.X upgrades) without messing things up?
    Best regards,
    Mr.MMM

Update config testsuite on 4.0.0_fixes branch to force kill the app server before running any tests when the app server is Tomcat. The regression runs were hanging on this branch when going to run the config suite because the Tomcat server isn't shutting down cleanly at the end of the MXUnit run. I believe this is an issue with the version of ActiveMQ we are using. Since I don't think we want to update ActiveMQ on this branch force killing the Tomcat server will workaround the problem.

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I have tried this on another machine running the same version of Blackboard. It works fine.
Only difference is that the machine that has the JVM crash is running on Fujitsu PrimePower and the OS is Solaris 9 (but twigged for PrimePower).
The one where it runs and starts up successfully is running on SunFire (OS is Solaris 10).
I am wondering if there is a problem with the JVM loading required libraries because of the OS being different versions.
Any leads on this is welcomed. Thank you.

  • ITunes 8.1 -- Update apps causes repeated window to log in

Everytime I click on Applications and "check for updates" I am met with a login to account window. I put in my password and the window disappears then pops up again. It won't stop.
    Things I've tried:
    Rebooting
Logging into iTunes account through account name button first (could do it, but didn't fix the problem)
    Any suggestions?

Well, at least I am not the only one stuck in this login query loop. That is SOOO frustrating.
I have tried everything I could think of, from de-/reauthorizing my mac, loggin in and out, deleting that SC Folder to doing all this with an admin account, restarting and so on etc. etc. etc. Nothing works.
Not being able to update my iphone apps seems to be related to the iTunes 8.1 update. I wonder why there are not more people complaining about this. If I'm part of a minority I guess I'll have to wait a long time before this gets solved.
I had a similar problem before related to upgrading songs to iTunes plus - which never got solved: when I eventually get my ITMS to show me how many songs I have eligible for an iTunes plus upgrade and I do buy them, I always get a second login data query that is supposedly needed to "update" the list of songs eligible for an upgrade. I get stuck in a loop there as well. I don't know if this is related to the much more annoying app update problem. Anyway:
PLEASE APPLE FIX THIS! Thank you.

  • Mac app store driver update killed my printing

    Printer:  Envy100 (D410)
    OS:  Mountain Lion (OSX 10.8.2)
Printer was working fine prior to this morning when I was notified that there was an update via the app store.  I installed the driver update and now all HP software will not see the printer.  I have done the following:
    *  Downloaded latest software from HP and re-installed - no change, cannot see printer
    *  Uninstalled HP Printer software, rebooted, re-installed latest version - no change, cannot see printer
    *  Added the printer first via System Preferences-->Print  & Scan (no problem there) then tried to use the HP Utility to see the printer - no change, cannot see printer
    *  Tried to set up the printer manually using IP address - still does not see the printer
All of this was working fine yesterday.  I am now without the ability to print, other than by email using hpeprint.com.
I don't know how to remove the latest update that hosed me.  Please help.
Edit:  I should also note that all the PCs in my house have no issues.  Nothing changed on the printer itself, the only thing that changes is the driver software on my mac.
    This question was solved.

    Ok,
Reboot the router by unplugging it for 30 sexonds, then try following the HP Setup Assistant again.
If it still fails to locate the printer please let me know your router brand and model.
I now tested the Envy 100 using the latest HP Printer Drivers 2.12 and were able to print with no issues..

  • Scroll bounce causing preview.app hang

Preview app has been hanging the entire system when I scroll down to the end of a document and get the scroll bounce effect at the bottom. I have repeated this issue many many times to confirm it.
Finally I used a terminal command to disable the bounce effect:
defaults write -g NSScrollViewRubberbanding -int 0
This has solved the problem. I do however miss the bounce at the end for some strange reason, and was hoping someone could tell me how to correct the underlying problem so that I can re-enable the bounce effect at the end.
Interestingly the problem is not reproduceable in other apps that bounce at the end of a page (e.g. safari).
Thanks in advance for your help.
    Cheers
    Murray

The problem is related to the HD3000 graphics driver in 10.8 (after doing a lot of research). The problem is being reported with a number of different applications in 10.8 (although apparently the problem has been around since before 10.8), and after checking the administrator console it is pretty clear that this is the problem.
It appears as though we are stuck awaiting a fix from apple.
I have stopped using preview.app, and all is well while using "skim" at the moment.

  • Preview app not showing thumbnails view scrambled

    Hi,
since i updated to maverick last week i got an issue with the Mac Preview app, it opens the documents ok, but when opening several files at the time, the thumbnails are all scrambled and not showing the miniature of the selected file.
if i click on the thmbnails area and navigate with the keyboard's arrows it allows me to go through the open files, all files open ok but the thumbnails is the only part that is having this issue.
i have deleted the com.apple.Preview from ~\Library\Containers but still having the issue.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Mavericks and Preview app problem

    Hi!
Yesterday I updated my iMac 27" (Intel i5, 4Gb RAM) and MacBook Air (2010) to Mavericks and noticed significant slowdown working with Preview app and RAW photos.
Preview loads photos very slowly partly covering photos with black color. This problem is on both my Macs.
I even reinstalled Mavericks completely on my Mac. Also I tried to remove Preview preferences. This didn't work. I installed Camera Raw update - no use.
In the latest 10.8 everything worked smoothly and fast. In Mavericks... it is not. I'm very upset...
    Does anyone have such problems?
If there is no solution at the moment how to downgrade back to 10.8?
By the way, I noticed that Mavericks uses all of my RAM all the time. Is it normal?

Interestingly, when you go to Feedback, when you get to OS X applications, Preview isn't even listed!!  Maybe it's because the changes under Mavericks have turned a previously easy application to use into a disaster area.  Perhaps they don't want to hear the feedback?
    1.  No more crop button for the edit toolbar.
    2.  No more save as, or save all options under File drop down menu.
    3.  Some genius changed save as to export...  only took me a week to figure that out!
    4.  When opening 7-10 jpg's to edit, various problems occur:
         a.  cropping and then adjusting picture size often results in adjusting size change not being saved.
         b.  after this happens on one picture, trying to adjust size on another picture doesn't work.
         c.  repeated attempts causes Preview to freeze up and you have to quit the application.
         d.  when reopening the same pics after reopening preview they appear in 2 or 3 windows instead of the                    original 1 window.
         e.  the same problems may repeat themselves trying to edit all 10 pictures.
What used to take 4-5 minutes to do before Mavericks, now can take 10 minutes or more.  Did anyone test Preview 7.0 before it was released???
