10.6.7, the 2011 MBP, and the death of easy cloning....

I'm a photographer and whenever I've hit the road in the past, I'd clone my MacPro boot drive to an external, then boot my MacBookPro from the external, clone the external to the internal on the MBP and I'd be off, with an exact replica of my desktop machine, with all my apps, settings, email, etc.
Just got a 2011 MBP and tried this out with 10.6.6. It would not boot the MBP. After some research, I figured out that I needed to install from the MBP OS install DVD onto the external boot drive while it is attached to the MBP, then clone it over to the internal. This worked, but sucked up some major time to do the instal.
Now 10.6.7 is out, with different flavors for different machines. Seems if I install 10.6.7 on my Desktop and then clone to an external drive, I wont be able to run the 10.6.6 installer disk the came with my MBP.
According to this article: http://www.hardmac.com/news/2011/03/23/about-the-different-versions-mac-os-x-10- 6-7 I might wind up with some weird problems if I do.
Any suggestions out of this mess until 10.6.8 comes along and (maybe) fixes this?

Instead of cloning the whole boot volume, why not just copy your documents? You wouldn't want identical systems on a Mac Pro and a portable, even if it were possible.

  • 2011 mbp and charter cable internet

i just got charter high speed cable internet installed. i was with U-verse. So i thought going from 18 mb download to 30 mb download for less money was good.  but now my mbp freezes up when loading pages.  wife's imac no issues.  ipads no issues. iphone no issues. just the mac book pro.
it slows down connected by ethernet or wirelss.  i also have a time capsule and tried to go through that and that also slows down.
but speed tests show 30-50 mb down load and when it works, it flies but more often than not, it freezes. 10-15 seconds to load a page. to get to these forums, it was slow.
i got 8mb ram on mbp. bought it in july 2011.
i did not have these issues with u-verse.  so it has to be something between the charter set up on the modem but i don't know what to look for.
    thanks

Can you login into the modem configuration and change the lease times of the IP address ?

  • What is the best way to run dual monitors with a 2011 MBP?

I have a 2011 MBP and i want to run dual 1920x1080 monitors. what is the best way to accomplish this? i also have a PC attached to the monitors with the DVI connection (but would be willing to change this to the analog, if necessary). so i have teh analog and HDMI connections available on the backs of the monitors.
what i would like to do is hook the MBP through the HDMI if possible and then i would just be able to change inputs on the monitors depending in which computer i want to use (PC or MBP).
any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Ok, you either own a MacBook Pro with an Intel Processor, or a PowerBook with a PowerPC Processor.
If your stated speed is correct, then you own a PowerBook, which will not run Windows natively. development & sales for Virtual PC has ceased. The only emulator still around, I think, is iEmulator & is terribly slow on G4s.
Boot Camp does not work on PowerPC Macs.

  • Issues with 2011 MBP fixed?

Hi, I was wondering if the 10.6.7 update successfully fixed the major issues that were reported (screen freezing, fan running, etc.) or are these hardware issues that can't be fixed with an update? My mom wants a new laptop and I really think she should get a Mac, but I'm hesitant to order a 2011 because of these issues...it's a headache I don't want or need!
Also, are new 2010 Macbook Pro's still available anywhere? Would you recommend buying a used 2010 on ebay or is that risky?

We've purchased more than dozen Early 2011 MBP and none have those issues. Apple has a refurb section if that makes you feel better. And they have a full year warranty that you can even purchase AppleCare for.

  • HT201250 If I install a new SSD, there is no recovery partition (Command-R at startup), will TM be able to format and install the OS on my 2011 MBP?

I have a new 2011 MBP that's still pretty clean application and data wise.  I have a new Vertex 4 SSD (256GB) to install and want to know whether I need to have that formatted before I install it or will I be able to use a Time Machine backup to perform the format and restore of the Lion OS X and applications?  Will I have to get an external SSD enclosure to format the SSD before I install it?  Despite the many threads...I am still a little confused as to the exact procedure to use.  Most of the threads say use the recovery partition (well if the SSD is new, not formatted) where does this recovery partion reside?  Please use the KISS principle when responding...

The only negative to not having the original drive will be the work needed to reinstall all the apps and reconfigure to your liking. You will also have to decide whether to stay on Lion (which you should update to 10.7.4, BTW) or bite the bullet and take a leap of faith on Mountain Lion.
In either case, to simplify matters you would do well to concoct a Lion or ML bootable installer on a USB stick. In either case, you need to get the corresponding installer downloaded onto the hard drive and, instead of running it to execute the install, extract the coveted InstallESD.dmg image from which you construct the bootable installer. See here for details: https://discussions.apple.com/message/17782820#17782820  The procedure applies the same to both of the latest cat flavors.

You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

My 2011 MBP has begun running slow with frequent 'spinning beach ball' events. I'm running Yosemite and wondered if I should of use the original install disk for a maintenance reinstall. I presume I'd have to download Yosemite again, though I'd be happy just using Snow Leopard again too.
    Thanks for the help.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • If I get one of the Toshiba SSDs and put it in my 2011 MBP, will it auto enable trim support?

If I get one of the Toshiba SSDs and put it in my 2011 MBP, will it auto enable trim support?

It is outrageous that Appe deliberately does not enable TRIM support native to the OS to non Apple SSD drives automatically. Even worse is to cancel it after an update of the OS.
It is forcing anyone who does not add up to your greedy aftersales target to eventually experience trouble with their non Apple drives.
    It is monopoly, isn't it?
It does also sounds petty, very disgusting from such a reputable company.
I love Apple but they do not need to go down such length to whatever are their aims.
Very disappointed to find out that the TRIM support I enabled prior to the update 10.9.3 is now disable.
    Simply unbelievable!

  • My early 2011 MBP goes to sleep even when Sleep is turned off and the power is plugged in.

Basically, it just decides to go to sleep after a few minutes of it being idle.  Searched around but I couldn't find a similar problem.  I've already tried resetting the SMC, but that hasn't fixed it.
    Any ideas?

why is the WIFI so slow on my 2011 MBP? its getting frustrating

    Hi Jeff,
Can you elaborate on your issue a bit further. What is "slow" in your approximation? Tell us about the environment you're in, what type of router, band and channel. How many other wireless routers does your machine pick up? Is it slow other places with wireless or just this current location? New issue, ongoing?

  • 15in early 2011 MBP, Can I get the screen replaced w Hi-res Antiglare?

I have a 15 Macbook pro early 2011.  I was wondering if apple could replace the current screen with the hi-res antiglare screen.

It'll cost the same amount of money as your computer did at first. If you just got your MBP (and you bought it directly from Apple via a store or online) go exchange it.

  • Why wont the SSD from my 2011 MBP work right away in my 2012 MBP?

    I have a 2011 MBP running a Samsung SSD 470 without a problem.
I swapped the SSD into my new 2012 MBP which is, apart from the yearly updates (2.3 i5 to 2.5 i5 processor and RAM speed increase from 1333 to 1600) exactly the same computer. I expected to literally carry on using it from where I left off in the 2011 model but the 2012 machine will not boot with this drive in it.
    Why?

actually i own a late 2011 Macbook Pro and I bought my niece a new 2012 Macbook Pro....
gave her one of my old Kingston V200 128GB SSD to give her speed....
It booted but kept on crashing and the startup is very slow...So i did an internet recovery install....And now it's working great...
came to a conclusion ( i may be wrong ) - because my 2011 is a Sandy Bridge Processor/Chipset combo and the 2012 is the new Ivy Bridge Processor/Chipset combo was the issue...After a clean install, everything was fine...
I understand you're hesitant about doing a clean install because you don't have it backed up....
Try booting with the original drive to see if your sata cable is fine just to eliminate your sata cable as defective...
