10.6.7 Update Breaks CIFS/SMB Home Drive?

Hello,
My environment is a Microsoft Active Directory domain environment. Our users home drives are hosted on a Windows server. Upon login on a Mac workstation, the user's home drive is mapped automatically and appears on the dock. This has been working perfectly fine for us, up until I updated a client to 10.6.7.
I'm finding that my current production image (10.6.5) works fine. Now, when I apply 10.6.7 to the machine, home drives start mounting on the dock as a "?" icon and aren't accessible. I can create a manual mapping of the shared network folder and that works fine, but it's the automatic mapping done by Active Directory that isn't working properly and I'm frankly stumped at the moment.

Okay,
issue is resolved on our side / for us. We've setted the read right to our share-point / mount point folder. With no Inheritance to the subfolders. (Read-Right to "this folder only" (the mount-point) Now it works fine again... with older versions (10.6.0 - 10.6.6) it worked without that setting.
May that helps for you too.
Good Luck!

  • 10.4.7 Update breaks CFIS/SMB?

I just updated my MB to 10.4.7 and I can't connect to my SMB shares on my NAS. It's not a hardware issue because everything else works internet, ftp etc. My G4 which is still 10.4.6 has no problems. Both are connected via ethernet. Anyone else having this problem with 10.4.7?
    Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. I did a bit of reserach and I found that if I connect using cifs://sharename/share then it connects fine. Odd that smb://sharename/share works under 10.4.6 on the G4

  • Mac OSX 10.4.8 Update Breaks Raid Striping -- System will no longer boot

    Hi,
I'm a newbie from the PC world with a Mac Pro. For the last 8 hours I've been trying to get a Raid-0 configuration to work with no success.
The Raid array constructs ok and the system boots. Once that's done the Software Update screen arrives and I would select install all... then the machine would not boot. I get a Grey Shade like affect and the message to power off and restart. Powering off does nothing.
So I started again for the Nth time and added each Software Update individually. All loaded and rebooted successfully until the 10.4.8 Update.
As soon as that loads, installs and restarts the machine will not boot.
I called Apple's Tech Support and they told me they do NOT support RAID on this machine. I said what are you talking about. They put me on hold talked to a supervisor and came back with the same story. I just don't get it...
So anyone have any insight and advice on why the update breaks my Raid-0? What can I do to get over the problem (I'd like to have the RAID...)?
    Thanks for the assistance.
Mac Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Yes, you needed an emergency boot drive anyway to repair your RAID boot drive. Just use the same one in addition to a working clone or backup of your regular system.
Apple made it easy to install or update security updates and system updates from an alternate drive (but you will have to use the stand-alone (combo preferably) updaters instead - which many use already as normal part of upgrades for years now (they seem more useful and reliable).
My preference is a dedicated boot drive with OS and apps and minimal home directory - no media files - and fast, like 10K Raptor. I use RAID for my home directory so it isn't on the boot drive for years to improve performance and keep the OS separate. Never a problem and nice mix.

  • Finder ignores CIFS/SMB permissions if under 777.

I've seen alot of talk of this over the last year, but no real solutions.
In finder, if I do  go->Connect to server   do:  CIFS://server/home/user/  it prompts me for a username/password which is readily accepts and then connects to the share.  However when finder comes up it gives me 'The folder "user" can't be opened because you don't have permission to see its contents."
If I pull open terminal.app I can do a cd /Volumes/server/home/user/  and a directory listing just fine.  The default permissions (in the unix world) is 711.   If I change it to 777 finder becomes happy.  However, this really isn't a valid solution as it breaks other things.
The NAS in question is an EMC VNX, and as far as one can tell we're patched up beyond the "July" issue where Lion crashes the data movers.
This is seriously feeling like a failure of Finder to handle permissions right.  What else can I verify to ensure it isn't a finder issue?

I think it's a bigger problem than you suggest. I have 2 buffalo NAS boxes here, a NetGEAR ReadyNAS NV+ and a Windows 2008 server. I can connect to everything - except the 2k8 machine's share. It shows up in the shared places list, it attempts to connect: I've turned off the Group Policy requirement for encrypted passwords on the 2k8 server, which is what allowed Leopard to connect to it, originally - but SL won't complete the connection.
This is especially weird, since the Buffalos and the ReadyNAS all use Active Directory user authentication for the connections made to them by the SL machine... I'm amazed nobody is reporting this yet (that I can find in the forum, at least).
Anyone with any idea what's gotta be hacked, please post here!

  • Can't open Office 2011 files on CIFS/SMB shares.

I can't open Excel or Word documents if they are opened from a network CIFS/SMB share.  Excel returns something like "could not open because some content is unreadable" and offers to repair the document.  Word just questions if the document is corrupt and errors out too.  If I drag the same document to my desktop, it opens just fine.  Is something broken with SMB?  I'm running the latest Yosemite (10.10) upgraded from Mavericks 10.9.5.  Office 2011 is completely updated too.

I am having what I think is a intimately related problem, but which is somewhat more aggravated. I have a server set up using FreeNAS 9.3, which is configured as Windows+CIFS (SMB) in order to facilitate for Windows-based computers to join. Permissions are consequently set-up with a Windows client (a MBP running Win7 in Bootcamp). Everything works fine as far as access and file transfer goes, but using any application changes the experience.
Just to be explicit, my problem is not only related to MS Office files, but also to PDFs and PNGs (I assume it is related to ALL files, but those are the ones I have tested). The problem arises, as for you other, when I try to save from within the application after I have altered the file's content. I get different messages depending on the application, but they all share the problem of not being able to save and that they after showing that error message, change the filename on the server (in the case of Word, it becomes 'Word work file L_2.tmp').
I have tried connecting to the server using Win7 and changing the same file and that works just as intended. I have also tried setting up a dataset (folder) on the server with only AFP and Mac settings and that works fine, but as Apple shifted to SMB from Mavericks it is not that enticing to set up a server with a dying technology, which is why I insist on getting the Windows/SMB share to work.
I have also tried the tips provided in this thread:
    http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=1253789
    1. smb://FreeNAS
    2. cifs://FreeNAS (should force SMB1)
    3. smb://FreeNAS:139 (should force connection over Netbios instead of TCP/IP)
    None works.
I have checked the log files /var/log/samba4/log.smbd and /var/log/messages on the server, but they do not provide any error messages in this respect.
Based on declure's suggestion, I have copied a new Word file to the server -> disconnected from the server -> reconnected using 'cifs://servername' -> opened the Word file and tried to save it -> same error message ("Word cannot save this document due to a naming or permissions error on the destination volume."). As this works in Win7 it seems as the real problem resides not with the application (or is Office for mac faulty?), but with OSX.
Any constructive suggestions would be appreciated as I really would want this to work using SMB.

  • What are the things 10.6.8 update break?

After the 10.6.8 update I am having so many issues,
first, the %100 cpu usage of dock, disabled parallels, and now it is ok,
then, a reboot and I am unable to login, I enter my password, it begins the login process, then logs me out,
if I persist, it logs me in after a couple of tries, but each time a few of my applications are missing at random, and the environment is very very unstable, sometimes I see no desktop background, sometimes I start firefox and I am logged out again.
I've seen some people suggesting removal of login items to resolve a similar but not the same issue, so I'm inclined to think overall, there is an issue with some applications which 10.6.8 update breaks.
For starters my login items are:
    GrowlHelper
    Geektool
    EyeTv Helper
    Canon IJ Network scanner
    ituneshelper
    Magicprefs
    Sophosuiserver
Does anyone have any problems with any of these?
I only verified the parallels desktop 6 issue up to now.

  • Since updating to itunes 11, Home Sharing is not working

Since updating to itunes 11, Home Sharing is not working.
    I am running Windows 7, 64-bit.
All mobile devices are up to date with ios, including 2 apple tvs (2 & 3), iphone 4s and 3gs, ipad1 & ipad2.
I've rebooted twice, turned home sharing off, then signed back in. Still nothing.  Rebooted the mobile devices.  No joy.
Curiously, wi-fi sync is also not working - the devices are not showing up in itunes unless I plug them in.
    Please Help!

Yes, you guessed. After some rebbots it stopped working again .So it seems it is not a Firewall issue. Kept looking and found a suggestion in a forum to disable IPv6, apparently iTunes for Windows doesn't work well with IPv6. So I did, and after several rebbots and tests, both Home Sharing and Apple TV 1st Gen are working. To disable IPv6, follow this link
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929852
It has an MS Fix It that will do it for you. Or if you wnat to go manual, follow this discussion, this guy was having the same issue several months ago
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3507281?start=75&tstart=0
So far IPv6 is just being rolled out, and it will be a few years until everybody abandons IPv4 and go only with IPv6, so you shouldn't have any issues disabling it. And by then iTunes -I hope- should be fixed to work correctly with IPv6. Try it, and if you find any issues you can always enable IPv6 using another MS Fix it program, or manually reverse what you did
Hope it is fixed this time!

  • Why can I no longer use AirPlay with my Slingbox?  New updates break complatibility?

Why can I no longer use AirPlay with my Slingbox?  New updates break complatibility?

You already seem to know what the issue is, it is the parallax feature that was added to iOS 7.  From your rant, it appears that your attempt to work around this was not successful.  According to the Apple documents I've seen, they recommend that you enlarge your image (not reduce it).  Make your image have excess space on all sides, which is not displayed on the screen.  This way, when you tilt your device one direction or another, it can shift the image to give the appearance of 3D.
As a photographer, I like to use the full frame of my images, but I also know that I need to leave room around the image as well.  I have some photos I have taken that I can't use because I have them cropped too tightly too, but I have others that work just fine.  Just remember that part of the image file is "off screen" so that if iOS has to shift the image up it has some image that can scroll onto the screen.  It needs this space on all sdes, so just make youre images larger, and keep in mind that a portion on each side will be outside the normally visible screen...  If you don't like this feature, you can always go into the settigns and turn it off.

  • Stop Auto Mount of SMB Home Folder

For awhile, I tried SMB home folders for network users.  This worked poorly, so i went back to using AFP.
However, for most users, their  network home folder is now getting auto mounted by SMB at login.
I've checked WGM manager to make sure they have AFP homes and that no SMB home is assigned.
I've checked the users control panel to see if there is an automount setup there.  Nothing.
Where else could auto mount information be stored and how can I find it to wipe it out?

Normally it would be a matter of changing the server to register the AFP share as an auto mount for user home directories, then you have to use Workgroup Manager to reconfigure each user to select the new share location which should now be listed in the Home tab in Workgroup Manager.
If you only do the first step the user account will still be set to the original settings.
Is this using Open Directory and a Mac file server? The process might be more complicated if your using Windows Active Directory, and typically a Windows server does not do AFP.

  • 10.4.7 Update Recreated My Home Drive

When I updated to 10.4.7 it looks like my home drive was recreated. My original home drive looks like it is still intact. How do I get all of my prefs and printers and docs and everything back? Can I just copy the files back or is there a move process?
    Thank you, everyone.
    QuickSilver   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I imagine that the names of your two Home directories is different in some way.
    You should try this:
    Open up System Preferences
    Click on Accounts
create a new account. (wish I could tell you exactly what buttons to press for this but I am not on a Mac right this second)
For the "Short name" put use the name of the Users/home folder that you are trying to save.
    Give the user administrative privileges.
Then enable the login Screen (it is in there somewhere)
then restart your computer and login as the new user
You should then be able to go into the System Preferences and delete the user that was created when you upgraded.
Double-check of course, but it should be using your old settings and your docs and stuff will all be there just like they used to be.

  • How JFileChooser finds the Desktop and can browse CIFS(SMB) in windows.

    Hello.
I'm currently using serveral methods from FileSystemView used by JFileChooser to detect if a File is a system root, a floppy, or to find the "My Documents" folder under windows.
JFileChooser however is also able to provide a link to the desktop. How do I get that location from Java?
Further more. JFileChooser is able to browse and use resources located on the network using CIFS(SMB). I've searched through JFileChoosers source. But I can't figure out how it does this.
I'm currently writing a Folder synchronization app. As you can see in the screenshot ( http://users.telenet.be/greenhouse/Screenshot-7.png ) I'm trying to integrate the location browser (Look based on the GTK file browser) more into windows. I want my users to be able to browse CIFS just like in the JFileChooser. How do I do this?
The reason I'm writing my own browser is because the GTK one provided in Java is more then lacking. And I can provide browsing for remote resources more easily (like SFTP and SCP)
    In short:
*JFileChooser however is also able to provide a link to the desktop. How do I get that location from Java?
*JFileChooser browses and uses CIFS in windows. How do I do this (without a 3th party library) the same way as JFileChooser does it?

I hope I'm going about this the wrong way. Because this would be an ugly Java API.
