10.6.7 won't shutdown or restart

When i click the shutdown or restart buttons i the apple menu, nothing happens. The window i was on is deactivated, but i never get the shutdown dialog box. This happens for both shutdown and restart. Same issue when i hit the power button and when i try to restart of updates. It really need to fix this because i can no longer get updates.

Try repairing your permissions from within the Disk Utility App.  You will find the Disk Utility App inside the Utilities Folder of the Application folder.
Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Launch Disk Utility
Select your hard drive on the left hand side bar
Click on Repair Disk Permissions
**It can take a while to repair permissions...so before you have a cup of coffee brewing this morning.

  • Won't shutdown or restart unless hard boot - SMCFanControl Application

I have quite a bit of installed hardware so I thought SMCFanControl would be a good idea. However, it seems that I can reproduce a problem I'm having when utilizing the SMC app.
    Problem:
    1. Won't shutdown or restart unless a power boot is performed
    2. Many applications lock up and won't even force quit.
    3. Can't reboot locked apps after force quitting when I re-click in dock.
    Noticed:
I don't seem to have a problem unless I've at some point started ( or even after I've manually quit ) SMCFanControl. BTW I don't have it to start on login. But once I've used SMC after booting, no matter what, that is when the issues seem to begin. So I tried quitting prior to shutdown. Didn't work.
Question: Has anyone else experienced unexplained lock ups, non forceable quits on apps, no shutdown or startup without boot, whom also has SMCFanControl? Has anyone found a solution to this problem as I REALLY NEED some sort of cooling mechanism. Because without SMC, I'm running about 150 farrenheit and I can't get the room any colder without locking up myself!
P.S. I've tried resetting the PRAM or VRam or whatever Ram is reset when you power up, holding the power button in while then pushing Command, Alt, "R" at the same time until it does that long beep.
The only solution found so far is unnacceptable, which is leaving SMC turned off permanently.
    Thanks,

Well Bababooey if you're comparing yourself to a Apple Genius Bar then you should already know my answer, your snarky remark get a snarky reply.  Why would I go to a salesperson to fix my computer problem when I can go directly go to the source itself.  I used to sell Apple computers over 8 years ago and was apple certified before the Genius bar existed. If I am to go about fixing an issue I can't fix on my own I will go to the source itself meaning Apple's programmers and developers - being UI UX Developer myself I know they should have QA'd all platforms and troubleshooted any arising issues.
This was also the first time in the 20 years I've been using a Mac that I even attempted to go on this forum which i thought would put me in connection with a certified Apple representative.  This turned out to be a complete waste of time just being a public forum with no Apple employee involved.  I was hoping to find a quick fix but in turn I was only frustrated with stupid responses such as yours that were in no way an answer to my original question.
BTW I fixed the issue on my own and without your help or Apples help. I'm glad if all forums point here regarding this issue because I now have the answer. The answer I was looking for from someone earlier was as simple as this {Download Maverick and reinstall the platform - it will take an hour to do but afterward 10.9.2 was installed and my computer is now able to shutdown and restart without having to do a hard boot.}  No more software update bar at top and no problems with my drive which I told both you and Grant - I know my computer better than you and I've probably been using them longer than you.
So again Babowa you were so wrong...... and I am right.
Again anyone having the same problem, I suggest reinstalling Maverick and you'll be suprised 10.9.2 will work fine.

  • Mavericks 10.9.1 won't shutdown or restart

Just upgraded to 10.9.1 Mavericks. Since upgrading, my MacBook Pro won't shutdown or restart; nothing happens after instigating, then after a few minutes a dialogue box appears saying an open application prevented the action.
I have tried to upgrade to 10.9.2 via the App Store but it requires a restart to complete... Same with using the direct downoad link from the Apple site. No external drives or peripherals attached via USB or Firewire. In order to shutdown I have to force it by holding down the power button. Otherwise the system is functioning fine.
Any ideas? If you need system logs just point me in the right direction...
    Cheers guys

It appears there was some element of Chrome or Mail which was preventing the shutdown/restart sequence. Looks like I've fixed it by searching for Mail processes in Activity Monitor and force quitting those, and trashing Chrome (also using AppTrap to delete the prefs too) and reinstalling Chrome.
Just in case anyone else has this problem when upgrading to Mavericks.

  • HT1557 10.9.2 update won't update on my imac 2010 at all, and now my computer won't shutdown or restart without a hard boot.  Did anyone have this same problem and figure out how to fix it?

So for the past few weeks I've been trying to update the 10.9.2 update on my imac (2010 - 21.5 inch) and when I attempt to try to update the software my screen goes grey with a Software Updater top bar the shows up on the top of the grey screen and then just quits doing anything (except the screen saver which works after nothing else happens - and that shows you how long I've been waiting for the grey screen to magically do something.  I've attempted downloading the software update then installing it but the same thing happens.  I don't think any of my 3rd party software is the cause of this and i'd rather not uninstall the programs since the update won't even do anything.  Utility is telling me nothing but the usual ARD element unable to be modified.
With the several failed attempts at installing this update (probably around 15x) my computer will not shutdown nor restart on command anymore.  The only way I can shut it down is holding the power button.
I used to have so much faith in Apple products and used to be a devoted user, but since Jobs passed away the direction of Apple has gone down the toilet.

  • MacBook Pro won't shutdown or restart properly

I am having difficulty shutting down or restarting my core 2 duo macbookpro. When trying to shutdown or restart normally (either by clicking on the blue apple logo on the menu bar and clicking shutdown/restart or by tapping the power button and clicking shutdown/restart), OSX closes all running programs, everything (icons, menubar, dock, etc) disappears except for the wallpaper, and then the screen turns a little dim like the mac is about to shutdown and the little circle (progress) shows it's running. So far everything is completely normal. the problem is that it stays that way and never restarts or shuts down. eventually, i have to restart manually by holding down the power button. I've waited for long periods of time - nothing happens.
moreover, I have to say that this is not after I've installed anything. it's just the way it is & this laptop is completely new.
ANY type of help or solution would be great.
    Thanks.

Sounds like you've got an application hanging on shutdown.
    Try this:
Close all applications. Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities. Have only "My Processes" showing. Sort them by name. Do you see any addons or extra applications you've installed in this list? If so, end the process. If you see something you don't recognize at all, ask about it. Once you've killed all the processes related to addons, try shutting down the computer.

  • Intel Mac Mini won't Shutdown or Restart

I have searched the forum with no joy.
    Apple/Restart/ OK
    Wait 60 seconds
    Reports random app not closing/OK
    Close all apps.
    Apple/Restart/OK
    Wait 60+ seconds
Menu Bar shutsdown, Dock still visible
    Reports Finder will not close
Only way out now to Power off.
Once rebooted it still will not restart or shutdown without pulling the plug.
How can I make this machine Restart?
    Any ideas please
Thanks, it's my wife's machine and she is getting pissy

Now to find out why every time the mini reboots it requires me to specify the wireless network to attach to.
In System Preferences Network pane, select Airport in the sidebar. Click the Advanced button. In the Airport tab, your wireless network(s) should be the only one(s) listed as Preferred Networks. Make sure the check box for +Remember any network this computer has joined+ is checked.
Back in the main Network pane, if Airport is the primary networking service being used, it should be at the top of the list of services. You can change the order by clicking on the little gear icon and selecting +Set Service Order+. You may also want to remove any networking services you do not use, such as FireWire and Bluetooth.
For the Time Machine, how about opening System Preferences +Time Machine+ pane, clicking on +Change Disk+ button and reselecting the Time Capsule disk.

  • Yosemite Won't Shutdown With External Monitor Connected

    Hi there...
I have a MBP 2010 and I've updated Yosemite from Mavericks. Now I'm running the latest 10.10.2.
Ever since I updated to Yosemite, I have had this problem of my computer won't shutdown when an External monitor is connected. This happens only when I put my computer to sleep. However, if I restart the computer and after logged in to the user and tried to shutdown, it shutdown without any problem. Every time I shutdown it just hangs and I had to force shutdown by press and hold the power button. Which I'm sure is not a proper way.
Right now only my external monitor connected to my MBP. So I did unplugged the ext. monitor and tried shutdown and it works fine. But it think this is the temporary solution that I've found but it is annoying to unplug everytime I wanted to shutdown and plug it back in once the computer is up and running. Which is not idle solution at all.
Am I the only one or a lot of people facing this issue? If there is a solution please share. Very much appreciated. Thanks.

Updated to 10.10.3 and the problem still persist. Still unable to shutdown or restart after wake up from sleep.
Any one affected? Is it something to do with Gfx card?

Repairing the permissions of a home folder in Lion is a complicated procedure. I don’t know of a simpler one that always works.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the page that opens.
Drag or copy – do not type – the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    chmod -R -N ~
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. When a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appears below what you entered, it’s done. You may see a few error messages about an “invalid argument” while the command is running. You can ignore those. If you get an error message with the words “Permission denied,” enter this:
    sudo !!
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up.
Next, boot from your recovery partition by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the recovery desktop appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, enter “resetpassword” (without the quotes) and press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • Why do I get a popup message in multiple languages requiring a shutdown and restart

Why do I keep getting a popup message in multiple languages requiring a shutdown and restart?  Has been going on for a few months.  Because of the shutdown reports have been sent to Apple upon restart.

After it restarted, did you see a dialog box resembling this one:
If so, next time it occurs click Report...
Before you send it to Apple, copy the text of the report. Paste it in a reply. Remove or obscure any personal information, should it appear.
If problems continues to occur please determine if they also occur in "Safe Mode":
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

  • ITunes hangs windows 8 on shutdown or restart

I have a computer that I have have put a clean install of Windows 8.1 on and everything seemed fine until I installed iTunes. At that point the computer will no longer do a clean shutdown or restart. At this point after I do a shutdown or restart it appears to do it, but it just "hangs" on a black screen and I have to power it off and back on to get it to restart. I have left it alone for up to 15-20 minutes to see if it would do it on it's own eventually, but it did not in that time frame.
Even with the power off/on Windows does not complain about the power cycle. That is, the "hang" appears to be late enough in the cycle that when Windows returns I do not get the message that Windows did not appear to shutdown correctly and offer up safe mode.
    Things to note:
If I uninstall iTunes, shutdown/restart is normal again. If I re-install iTunes, the problem returns.
    I have full admin rights
    I am running Windows 8.1 - 64-bit
    I am downloading iTunes 11.4 - 64-bit (current version)
It does not make a difference if I actually run iTunes or not, which makes me think it is with an installed driver or something. I also tried manually stopping the Apple Mobile Device Windows Service first and that also did not make a difference.
I have tried disabling Hybrid Shutdown and it makes no difference either way.
Does anyone know how to fix or at least how to troubleshoot this issue?

I found the answer over here http://superuser.com/a/818018/80188. Basically, for me, after disabling various Apple apps that start at login, I ended up disabling "QuickTime Task" and I can now restart/shutdown cleanly.

    Help???

If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out these instructions.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select the most recent panic log under the heading System Diagnostic Reports on the left. If you don't see that heading, select
View ▹ Show Log List   from the menu bar. Post the entire contents of the panic report — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports.

A Safe Mode boot might help ..
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
    See if the problem persists.

  • Anyone solved the "won't shutdown" problem?

one of the OS updates tried to fix it a while back, but like many my computer still won't shutdown. this has happened ever since i upgraded to leopard and installed my time capsule (not sure if time capsule is part of the problem). even when my computer does shutdown it hangs for a long time before doing so - most of the time it never shuts down (i get the white spinning disc for a while then it finally disappears but no shutdown). i am seriously thinking about rolling back my OS to tiger. doing a hard shutdown time after time i'm sure is not doing my HD any favors.

Try logging out before shutting down. Logging out clears out your ram. Shut downs should be instant. Your computer may be getting hung up on something. This could be clearing the ram, emptying the cache if your browser is still open, writing some unsaved data to your hard disk, etc. It may be having a difficult time doing one of these standard tasks and therefore "forgets" to shut down. Logging out first will eliminate most of these, and will be much better on your computer. Also make sure you close any open applications before you shut down. The only apps you should have open are Finder and Backup. Google DT search (if you use it instead of spotlight) and other apps are okay as well, but can slow down your computer.

  • 9i on Redhat Linux 8: 9i won't shutdown automatically during OS shutdown

Hello. I have 9.2.0.1.0 on Redhat Linux 8.0. After a lot of hassle, I finally got it starting automatically on OS startup. Now, the instance just won't shutdown during OS shutdown. The dbora script is fine; I could start/shutdown the instance using it. The rc?.d/K??dbora script works fine too; I could use it to shutdown the instance. But if I shutdown the OS, the instance just won't shutdown automatically. Any clue?

    Hi,
RedHat checks for a file on /var/lock/subsys/<script name> to later execute the corresponding shutdown script.
In your startup script you must create a file in that directory, referencing the name of your script. For example, if your script is called dbora, you must use this instruction to create this file:
    touch /var/lock/subsys/dbora
at the end of the 'start' code of your dbora script.
And, you must put the instruction
    rm -f /var/lock/subsys/dbora
at the end of the 'stop' code of your dbora script.
For example, your dbora script could look like this:
    case "$1" in
    start)
... // your initialization code here
    touch /var/lock/subsys/dbora
    stop)
... // your shutdown code here
    rm -f /var/lock/subsys/dbora
    ... // other code
Please write me if this doesn't work for you,
    JLA
