10.6.8 Boots only w/cursor no desktop/icons

Hello all,
I'm working on a relatives mid-2010 MacBook Pro, recently she started having performance related problems than it faled to boot correctly at all, it seems to boot normally but never loads the back ground image taskbar or icons, all that I get is a blue/green background and the cursor but nothing at all to click on with it, I cant get it too boot to a SL DVD that I have (Although not the one that came with it).
I can get it too boot to safe mode, although there's still some extreme performance problems, everything takes a while to respond.
Any ideas on what I can/could do?

  • T60p, can't go to desktop after the Windows Logo, only the cursor stays here and can move[pic]

My Thinkpad T60p can't go to desktop after the Windows logo, it has fingerprint, but never appears, only the cursor stays here and can move, the back ground is not black, nothing happens pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del or Win button.
Can go to safe mode but the same situation, the cursor is here, black background, nothing happens pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del or Win button.
After a long time of searching I guess the very most possible reason is system updating many patches guided by a software that lead me did that.
    Thanks!

If I was given this laptop to diagnose the first thing I would do is swap in another harddrive and confirm all the hardware works. If you don't have another drive to boot from you can use a Linux live-cd, it'll pretty much tell you the same thing and if the laptop works, your solution would be to either fix your operating system or reformat and start over with a new installation.

  • My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you

My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you think it is? It won't recognize any hard drive I put in the machine, so might it be the sata cable?

Boot the Recvoery USB, use Disk Utility to select the internal drive makers namea and size on the left.
Now select erase and select the midde option and click erase, it will take a bit to complete but it's best for the drive.
Now select Partiton tab, click the big box and Options: GUID and then Format: OS X Extended journaled and click apply.
Quit and you should be able to install OS X now with your Apple ID and password.

iMac 2.4GHz (MA877LL) refuses to boot with 4GB ram, boots only with 3 GB
    2 x2GB Geil GX2S6400-4GDCA
Computer refuses to boot with both chips installed 4 GB.
Computer will boot and recognize 3 GB..( Apple 1 GB + 2 GB GEIL)
Both Geil Chips will boot, when paired with the Apple 1 GB chip.
    machine recognizes 3 GB ram.
    Please advise...

Ensure the computer's RAM is fully seated down, and then try resetting the PRAM by holding down options-command-P-R at boot. The computer will make the boot chimes and then reset and chime again. When it chimes the second time release the keys and let the thing boot normally. Hopefully that will let it recognize the RAM.

I have a 21" iMac that only boots as far as a folder icon with a question mark in it.  Anyone know what this means and how to fix it?

It usually means your OS has corrupted files. You need to reinstall OS X.
If you are using Snow Leopard:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.
    If you are using Lion:
Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.

  • Boots only in Safe Mode - Macbook mid 2007

My Macbook mid 2007 with Snow Leopard will not boot correctly. The only successful means is Safe Mode (key S during boot).
All measures published in various postings have been conducted without any peripheral devices. These are:
    verify harddisc
    verify RAM
    resetting PRAM and NVRAM
A detailled overview can be found under here.
The existing original RAM and harddisc were successfully tested using a second identical Macbook. A new installation of Snow Leopard on the harddisc using the second Macbook was successful and started in this second Macbook as expected. This harddisc was then inserted into my Macbook, but it would not boot. Hence it is safe to exclude problems with RAM and the harddisc.
Attempts to boot with the Snow Leopard DVD (either via C plus boot or Option during boot and select Install DVD) are not successful. Attempts to boot from an external drive are also not successful. The boot process (regular, DVD, external) progresses to different states including grey screen with Apple and frozen wheel. There is no consistency.
From the various postings I have found and studied along with my numerous tests, I have deduced the following possibilities:
There is a problem with the GPU.
There is a problem with the keyboard (maybe someone spilled something).
I have found numerous solutions for "boots only in Safe Mode". All include booting via Install DVD, but this does not work in my case.
I have exhausted all my possibilities. Hopefully someone can provide more insight.

    lruetimann wrote:
What I am not able to test is booting with an external CD/DVD drive. However, there is no indication that the built-in drive is malfunctioning.
If you have a second MacBook (#2 working OK), you could use its CD/DVD drive loaded with the 10.6 DVD as the target disk to boot into, as the first Macbook (#1 the troubled one) reportedly cannot see a 10.6 DVD normally.
How to use and troubleshoot FireWire target disk mode
In your case this would be:
With the MacBook(1) on (Host), the MacBook(2) off (Target) connect the firewire cable.
Start the MacBook(2), hold T key to make it the boot drive. It will appear on the MacBook's(1) Desktop.
Insert the 10.6 Install DVD into the MacBook(2).
It too will appear on the MacBook's(1) Desktop.
From the MacBook(1), select Restart and hold down the Option key to select Start-up Manager.
From Start-up Manager, select the 10.6 Install DVD which will take you into the installation.
If this occurs, then you have booted into the install 10.6 DVD, From there you could try and install it, see what happens.
However, if it does not see the DVD disk, then this would indicate a defect in the logicboard (motherboard), though which component I would not guess.
If it does see the DVD, in Macbook (2) and can boot into it,… I'd be surprised!

  • How to boot only one group in remote machine from master machine

    Hi,
I want to know the command to boot entire remote machine from master machine and how to boot only one group for remote machine from master machine.
    Thanks
    Amit

You can boot the entire remote machine (after booting the Master machine) as follows:
    tmboot -B <lmid of remote machine> -l <lmid of remote machine>.
For all the available tmboot options see http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E18050_01/tuxedo/docs11gr1/rfcm/rfcmd.html#wp1032112

  • IMac 7,1 boot only in single user mode

    Hi all
I've a colleague with the following problem... his iMac 20'' (iMac7,1) is able to boot ONLY in safe/single user mode (with shift key pressed during boot).
If he tries to boot normally, after the usual Apple logo screen he gets a blank (light grey) screen. No finder, no login screen.
    We've tried this procedures:
    - SMB reset
    - PRAM cleared
    - OS Reinstall (we've tried from Lion to Mavericks... actually there's 10.7.5 installed)... note that ALL installation procedure has completed successfully.
    - tested the 1 RAM module installed (seems to be OK)
    - tested the HD (no problems found)
Despite all these attempts, this iMac is booting well only if we press SHIFT during startup. All programs run well, wifi is working and online update too. If we reboot leaving it to restart normally (no key pressed) it shows Apple Logo for 1 minutes, then (after a black reset of the screen) seems to crash/stuck into an empty grey screen.
Is possible to identify which driver/kext is causing this problem? It can be an hardware problem? How we can fix it?
    Thank you!

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
    [Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • CSS 11500 booting only to Offline DM mode

    Hello,
I setup a new CSS 11500 this morning, going through the steps of setting up the administrator password, IP address for the management console etc, but when continuing the CSS went straight to the offline DM menu. Now rebooting the unit it clears all the tests, loads the operational flash but continues to go straight to the DM menu regardless whether you press <y> or not at the prompt.
I also tried connecting via telnet to the management console but get connection refused.
Any ideas on why the CSS boots only to the DM menu?
    Thanks in advance,
    - Trevor

    Trevor,
once if offdm, attached a laptop with FTP Server on it on the management port.
Then from offdm, you can configure the CSS to boot from FTP server.
Once the box is up and running again, make sure you have an image on disk.
Finally, you don't need a PCMCIA flash and no you should no have received one.
    Regards,
    Gilles.

  • Computer boots only to hp logo

    Desktop HP Pavilion a1748X

Computer boots only to HP Logo.
Emergency start disks does not work.
System will not boot from Vista recovery disks.

It's the most probable thing and if that amps are the true ones then you better get another PSU of one rail only they are the best.
See this Power Suppy Requirements & Selection.
Edit: Use this Probably the most correct PSU calculator you can use for MSI K8N Nvidia Neo's to find the best PSU for your needs.
Edit: BTW do not turn that PSU on again or you can destroy your computer...but that is only my opinion.
    Be well....

  • Boot only with fan unlocked

hello, my pc have worked properly for 1 month. now, impossible to boot correctly.
The led's are all green directly.
After investigations, the pc boot only when the fan (original intel fan) is unlocked.
    P4 2,8 c + 2X 256 pc3200 samsung, xp pro pack 1.
    heeeeeeeeeelp me.
    best regards.

Don't worry about it: I'm (sigh) American, but I lived in Paris for six months, so I’m less intolerant of the language barrier than some. Where in France are you from? (Just curious). I guess in your case it was diagnostic, but usually there’s no good reason to start a computer without the heatsink on the CPU.  Try it with an alternate fan. Now that I think of it, I’m reasonably sure you can’t actually fry your processor by doing so (I’m fairly tired at this point—rampant insomnia—so forgive me), but the processor will throttle *way* back. If you can try to describe your problem in more detail, I or others here will be happy to do what we can. I’d offer to help translate, but at this point my French is likely so much worse than your English as to make that not even worth the while.

  • K8T Neo boot only without keyboard

    Hi,
since yesterday I am owner of an MSI K8T Neo Mainboard, but unfortunately I can't enjoy it. The mainboard boots only sometimes an only if the keyboard is not connected.
    My system:
    Mainboard: MSI K8T Neo-FIS2R (MS 6702 Ver. 1.0)
    Prozessor: AMD Athlon 64 3000+
    Cooler: Artic Cooling Silencer 64
    RAM: Infineon 2100er DDR RAM (HYS64D32000GU-7-A, A3E115011, PC2100U-20330-B1. CL2)
Graphic card: ATI Radeon 8500 64 MB
    Power Supply: Enermax EG465AX-VE(G) FMA 460 W (+3.3V: 35A, +5V: 35A, +12V: 33A)
While I'm trying to find the problem I 've already try to:
    - running the mainboard outside of te case to avoid shortcircuits
    - reseting CMOS
At the moment the mainboard is lying on a piece of newspaper, only the processor, the cooler, the power supply (both power connectors, even the 4-pin 12V connector), the graphic card, the power switch and the diagnose LEDs (D-Bracket 2) are connected.
If I power on the system, I get to the boot screen, where the system want's me to hit F1 or F2 to configure the reseted CMOS, but thats difficult without  a keyboard...
If I connect the keyboard (PS/2), the first boot screen stays on the display (the CoreCell Ship logo, no texts) and the d-bracket shows "attempt to boot". I tried 3 different PS/2 Keyboards (one Cherry Keyboard and two NoName products), but it's every time the same effect.
I already tried to fit only one of the Infineon RAMs into the motherboard, but nothings changes.
Is there someone who can help me? What else could I try?
    Greetings
    Henning

The board is outside the case. No possibility for a short circuit.
    I try to connect a mouse/keyboard kombination:
    ps/2 keyboard connected: no boot
ps/2 keyboard/ usb mouse: no boot
    ps/2 keyboard/ ps/2 mouse: no boot
    only usb mouse: no boot
    only ps/2 mouse: no boot
    nothing connected: boot
b.t.w. the d-bracket shows "attempting to boot" after it shows "bios sign on (this will start showing information about logo, prozessor,...)"
    Greetings
    Henning
