10.6.8 Freeze Lockup, Bootcamp works

Hello,
in the last days the temperature began to raise up to 35°C and my mac started to freeze on heavy hdd action. It started with 2-3 freezes using eyetv. Next i got freezes when download stuff at high speeds. I updated java to the latest version and installed the security update 003. But things just got worse. The time distance between freezes went from 1-2 hours to 1-2 minutes and now i got almost constant freeze right after boot. The whole boot up is quite fast, all my menu bar apps show up, all usb drives show up on desktop, i can move the mouse. Just the mouse cursor gets replaced by a spinning ball and i cannot click anywhere. The HDD works quite hard all the time.I let it run for 2 days, i thought maybe spotlight index needs to be rebuild. But things didnt smooth out. In Bootcamp everything works fine as usual.
Some specs:
- Boot Rom: IM111.0034.B02
- SMC 1.54f36
- Ati 4850 (never had any problems with it)
- 12GB RAM (already switched around, moved out and in)
- WD ST31000528ASQ (its the drive that should be replaced by apple, but it runs fine)
What i tried so far:
- all cables except power plug detached
- SMC, PRAM, VRAM Reset
- Reinstall 10.6.2 from Install disc
- Killing almost all processes (in times when freeze distance was like 1-2 hours)
- Verify/Repair disk and permissions
- i cannot get into safe mode (left shift on wireless keyboard didnt work, "c" key for reinstall does work)
What i found out so far from research:
- ati 4850 makes systems freeze, was fixed by some efi update 1.4, though my imac 11.1 didnt get it
- WD ST31000528ASQ is official faulty and could be replaced by apple, but my disk seems to work since i was able to reinstall osx on it and  bootcamp(chdsk) works
- any login or startup item needs to be removed? maybe i need to logout my user and make a new user or so?
- some kext are faulty? didnt install new drivers lately, maybe the security update 002 and 003 had some in em?
Please rate the following options:
1.buy new hdd and install it with fresh 10.6.2
2.buy new and other graphics card and install it
3.delete and install osx 10.6.2
4.buy newest osx and try to install it on a new hdd
5.delete the osx partition and live with windows 7 happily ever after
6.sell imac as defect on ebay

Found the problem after several hours of slowly removing all startup items, launchdaemons, launchagents, plugins and so on. Somehow Soundflower.kext got damaged and caused errors on startup. I didn't find out if it is directly related but in kernel.log and system.log both this message appeared: "ApplePCISMBusdriver::start failed to enable IO...". Maybe the HDD is already falling apart thus damaging files ... i wonder why the disk util never found any problems ... thanks though.
By the way on my research i found out that iStatMenus and Spotlight might cause these problems too, but i actually never found anything about Soundflower. So just in case ... try starting to boot in single user mode and remove everything step by step might help you too.

After installing yosemite on my laptop, once I open the internet through Safari, it at times will freeze or discontinue working causing me to close the wifi and turn it back on then reload the internet page to get it to work again.  Is there any way to fix this?

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
    [Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
            Please close this window.
    [Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
    12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

  • Droid X2 Owners with Freezes/lockups READ THIS!! and VZ/MOTO employees!!!

I am COMPLETLEY convienced the Freeze/lockup has something to do with the SD card or SD card slot. i retored my phone to 100% stock yesterday, NO bloatware removed etc...ran so nice all day, this morning i decided to put the SD card that came with it back in the phone, formatted it, and BOOM within 15 min, SCreen lock up
MOTO and VZ, you need to look into this. i think that is the issue on the freezes. im going to maybe call and see if i can get a replacement....
**also has happend with a seperate 32 Gig SD card*** SD card slots bad???

Interesting.....if you are running GB, then that's probably your problem. I have had an original DX since Nov 2010 and up until August when they released GB, I had absolutely no problems with the phone. Once GB got installed to the DX, the SD card started having serious issues. The card the phone came with just up and completely corrupted right after GB got installed on the phone, and then the replacement card that I was forced to go buy (VZW refused to replace it but that's an entirely different story) has had problems 3 seperate times since I installed it into the phone since the end of August....seems like every 3-4 weeks the SD card suddenly has file system errors and I cannot read anything on it (computer won't even recognize it), so I end up losing pictures, ringtones and other things to the point that I have regularly back everything up to my computer just to make sure I can keep these pictures and ringtones.  They're not all that important pictures, but still....if I was able to go 9 months on Froyo with NO problems with the SD card (or phone for that matter), then how come 2 months since VZW pushed the GB update to the phones are there regular occurences......something is fishy in Denmark with all these sudden problems
I would hope that VZW and Moto would realize the problems increased ten-fold since GB was pushed and actively attempt to fix them once and for all, but I truly believe they view it as the phone being EOL (no NEW phones are sold anymore) that the issues are no longer of a big concern to them. Seems like the only answer is that as we are able to do so, just upgrade to a different phone. I know for a fact that I will NEVER get another Motorola phone.....the DX is a great phone, but Moto, and to an extent VZW, have truly caused the phone to go down the proverbial toilet, which is a shame

  • BootCamp works fine, Parallels no US-Support, WMWare give Kernel Panics

    Hello
I am looking for a solution to get a virtual envoirement running on some mac.
We have some industrial applications connected over USB running with Windows XP Pro. Bootcamp is for us not usefull because we need mac and windows apps at the same time
    1) Installing it in BootCamp everthing works fine and the machines are able to communicate with the windows Software
    2) Installing Parallels 4 is possible. We see the machine with USB and load the drivers with Parallels is not able to communicate with the machine. We tried both, a clean windows install and a migration of the working bootcamp volume. Both without success (all patches and tools are loaded)
    3) Installing VMWare Fusion 2.01 works at the first impression. The Drivers are loaded The Apps are able to communicate with the machine but as soon as the Apps are closed it gives a kernel panics (any idea how to restart remotely??)
Also here we tried both, a clean windows install and a migration of the working bootcamp volume. Both without success (all patches and tools are loaded)
The developer of the machine only support windows and has no interest to debug and find a solution. BootCamp works so the Apps are OK for me.
The Support of Parallels is very bad. I bought a support ticket but no reactions within 24 hours. For VMWare I was to late to get support.
Does someone know of such a bug in VMWare or is this more a bug of OS X 10.5.6, The VMWare Fusion 2.0.1 is from the time OS X 10.5.5 was available. On the Support side of VMWare I doesn't find any solution regarding Kernel Panics
Who is able to help me?
    Regards
    Gérard

Brand new Macbook air. 10.7.3 . Random Kernel panics daily. Firefox, Word docs. opening sytem preferences, clicking on a link, just about anything crashes the system. Apple told me to take it to a local tech. He found nothing wrong with hardware. . Also shuts down (power off) after lid is closed on battery power. Did smc reset with no results. Computer is almost unusable for any real work.  we have three other macs with 10.6 that have never crashed in three years.  Lion has issues! Need fix

  • Thinkpad T420 Intermittent Freezing / Lockup

Thinkpad T420 Intermittent Freezing / Lockup
My Thinkpad T420 keeps intermittently permanently freezing / locking up. However it seems that anything that uses hardware acceleration makes the system suddenly lockup.  For instance, boot into Windows 7 and open Chrome Browser play a YouTube Video and it will lock up or enable the Windows Areo Theme and try looking at the event manager will also make the system permanently lock-up.
Here is the troubleshooting that I have tried so far:
Fresh OS installation from the recovery partition and update using Lenovo System Recovery but problem still persists. ( includes updated BIOS )
Run Lenovo Diagnostics ( 20 times pass over ) and no fault reported. ( no test in Diagnostics for CPU Graphics )
Tried a known good harddrive and loaded Windows 7 and applied Lenovo System update and problem still persists.
Tried using a known good memory module ( Lenovo T420 memory module ) tested separately in each memory bank, the problem still persists.
Used the machine with out the Battery, using just power cord and problem persisted.
Used the machine with just the battery and the problem still persisted.
Using the machine with Battery connected plus power adapter and problem persists.
Removed the DVD drive and the problem persisted.
Removed the Wifi Card and the problem still persisted.
Removed the 3GS card and problem still persisted.
Swapped over another keyboard from another Thinkpad T420 and problem still persists.
Disabled Fingerprint reader in BIOS and problem still persists.
Confirmed no freezes if Thinkpad is booted into the BIOS and left for some hours.
Booted machine with a live Linux Mint 16 DVD and problem still persists ( Freezes straight away )
No freezing when the laptop is used in Windows 7safemode.
No freezing when the laptop is used with Linux Mint in safe mode though Mint does confirm that hardware acceleration has been disabled.
CPU tempertures are within the normal range.
The troubleshooting confirms that the problem is a hardware fault. So I logged a warranty call and explained that it was likely a fault with the System Board or the CPU. The engineer replaced the system board and the problem still remained.
So it look most likely that the integrated graphics seem to be causing the problem, especially when the system freezes when hardware acceleration is used.  Has anyone else had a similar problem. I'm now waiting for the next plan of action form Lenovo. I did confirm the system freezing problem with Windows 7 and Mint 16 after the engineer replaced the system board and before he left. I'm still waiting on Lenovo getting back.

I done extensive testing, it was not the hard drive. It turned out that the integrated graphics on the cpu were faulty. The CPU has since been replaced and the problem solved. As per my first post, anything that used hardware acceleration would cause the freeze hence my suspicion about it being the cpu or planer board. It would freeze in windows and when using a live mint Linux cd, so the mint live cd ruled out the hard drive and preloaded software on it.
    Thanks,

  • Windows keeps freezing in bootcamp!!!!!

Ok here we go. I've tried windows 7 rc 64bit which froze and i thought maybe it was because the drivers aren't official. Then i tried 32bit and it froze. Next tried vista in both 32 and 64 bit fashion and same results. Then last night tried the rtm 64 bit version of windows 7 and once again it froze. So i decided to go with good ol xp and everything was cool until i went to download new graphics card drivers and it froze up. Ok i actually know how to lock up the system. If i download from my Usenet it will freeze. If i download and stream from youtube or gametrailers or such it freezes. No blue screens just locks up and i have to power down.
I then started to think maybe it was the 500gb hard drive i replaced the 250 with, thought i might have gotten a lemon. But i can download just fine in osx. So i put back in the 250 and installed a version of windows and it still froze on the 250gb hard drive. It seems to be the network card drivers. Anyone have any clues or past threads that can assist me. I need to get bootcamp up and running so i can keep my desktop off when i want to do some light gaming and when i want to game at work. Thanks for reading.

  • Java Causing System Freeze / Lockup

    Hey guys,
Ok after days of having my system seem to lock up for no reason I think I've tracked down the culprit. It seems that any time the JRE is accessed on my machine it causes a lockup. I've tried the following and each results in a system lockup.
Trying to uninstall using the Control Panel
Trying to verify version using Firefox / Chrome / IE
Trying to reinstall using the offline downloadable
I launch into safe mode and I can verify the version using Firefox / Chrome / IE. So I was thinking maybe some program was preventing it and causing all this so I uninstalled my nod32 antivirus. I shutdown SpySweeper. I disabled my firewall. I then went an uninstalled my graphics driver and turned off every program that was running.
And still it froze when attempting to even verify the current installed version. And any attempts to uninstall fail with a freeze. I also found a program that was supposed to remove old versions but that didn't help me at all.
Any help would be most appreciated guys as I've been banging my head on this for a while now.

You seem to focus very much on Java. But more likely the problem is in your OS, because otherwise reinstalling Java would certainly work. What OS are we talking about here? I see IE so it must be a variant of Windows, but which one?

  • Intermittent Freezes after Bootcamp 2.1 upgrade

Approximately every 10 to 15 minutes, I get a 15-20 second "freeze". That is the best way I can explain it. All computer functions stop completely, even the mouse movement. Placing my ear onto the device, it sounds different while this is happening. Everything appears to work fine before and after the freeze.
This only happened after installing the latest bootcamp update. I also have the problem described in this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1514424&tstart=0
What is the bootcamp taskbar program called and must I have that running all the time?

Firebird74, that thread doesn't apply to my situation exactly. I'm running Win XP under Boot Camp, not Vista, and my intermittent freeze happens consistently whether I am plugged in or on battery power.
Through reading several Apple Boot Camp discussion posts, I determined that I can fix the problem manually by force quitting KbdMgr.exe from task manager after each reboot, but this is rather annoying and I'm not even sure what KbdMgr.exe does, since it doesn't appear to affect anything at all without it running.
I'm using Input Remapper also, which shows up in my Task Bar, however I do not have any Boot Camp icon in the taskbar. I was wondering whether KbdMgr.exe is conflicting with Input Remapper.
I tried the Intel Chipset driver download from another seemingly related post, but it said my hardware wasn't new enough and quit.

  • [Guide] Install and run Windows 7/8 from an external drive without using bootcamp (works for late 2012 iMacs with 3TB drive)

This is a copy of a post from my blog, you can also Read it on my blog...
    Introduction
After I received my new iMac with a 3 TB Fusion Drive, I was disappointed when I realized that Bootcamp was not running on this model and prevented me from installing Windows on it. I wanted to take advantage of the powerful iMac hardware to play games but I couldn't.
There are a few ways of working around this limitation, but I found most of them quite complex and most of the time they required formatting the internal hard drive or repartitioning it and go for a brand new installation of Mac OS X. I was not comfortable with that.
But there is another way, and that is to install Windows on an external hard drive, using either USB or Thunderbolt. Personally I used a Lacie Rugged 1 TB drive that has both USB3 and Thunderbolt connectors. Both work very well.
This guide may interest you if:
You have an internal hard drive of more than 2TB and you can't run bootcamp at all (like late 2012 iMacs with a 3TB drive)
You have limited space or you don't want to dedicate disk space on your internal hard disk drive to a Windows installation
What this guide will make you do:
It will make you erase all your data from your external USB3/Thunderbolt hard drive
It will make you install Windows on your external USB3/Thunderbolt hard drive
It will make you install bootcamp drivers
What this will not make you do:
It will not make you modify anything on your internal Mac hard drive
It will not make you use or install the bootcamp assistant
It will not activate the Preference Pane for the default boot drive. You have to boot by pressing the ALT key to manually select your boot drive each tome you want to boot Windows.
    What you'll need
An external hard drive with a USB3 and/or Thunderbolt connector. This drive will be formatted so ensure you saved your files before going further. You can use either an SSD drive or a classic hard drive.
A Windows 7 or 8 install DVD or ISO (check whether to install 32 or 64 bits versions based on your Bootcamp drivers) and the corresponding Windows serial number.
    One of the following:
Mac OS X with a Windows 7 or 8 Virtual Machine (use VMWare Fusion or Parallels Desktop for example. Note: VMWare Fusion seems to have some issues with Thunderbolt and USB3. Plug your drive to a USB2 enclosure or hub to work around this -it worked for me-, or use another VM software) → Read the important note below
A PC running Windows 7 or 8 → Read the important note below
Windows AIK (free) running on your Virtual Machine or on your PC, or just the imagex.exe file (the rest of the Windows AIK package is not needed)
Download Windows AIK (this download and installation is not required if you have already downloaded imagex.exe)
Bootcamp drivers for your Mac. You can get these either by running bootcamp from your Mac (Applications > Utilities > Bootcamp) or, if like me you have a 3TB drive and can't run bootcamp at all, use the direct download links here.
A USB stick to store your bootcamp drivers
IMPORTANT: If your Mac has a 64 bits processor, your Windows Virtual Machine on OSX, your Windows installation on your PC and your Windows DVD/ISO must also be in 64 bits!
    Step by Step guide
Step 1: Get the install.wim file
If you have a Windows ISO file:
    Mount the ISO
If you're on OS X: double click on the ISO file
If you're on on Windows 7: Use a software like Virtual Clone Drive (free)
If you're on Windows 8: double click on the ISO file
Open the mounted drive, then go to the "sources" folder and locate the "install.wim" file. Save this file to C:\wim\ on your Windows installation or virtual machine.
If you have a Windows DVD: open the "sources" folder on the DVD and locate the "install.wim" file. Save this file to C:\wim\ on your Windows installation or virtual machine.
IMPORTANT: If instead of a "install.wim" file, you have "install.esd", you can not continue this step by step guide. And an ESD file can not be converted into a WIM file. So you must get a version of the Windows installation DVD/ISO that has an install.wim file.
Step 2: Clean, partition and format your external hard drive
On your Windows installation or virtual machine, plug in your external hard drive (can be plugged using USB2, USB3 or Thunderbolt at this stage)
Open the command prompt in administrator mode (cmd.exe). To run it in administrator mode, right click on cmd.exe > Run as admin.
Type the following and hit enter to open the disk partitioner utility:
diskpartType the following and hit enter to list your drives:
    list disk
This will display a list of disks mounted on your computer or virtual machine. Make sure your drive is listed here before you continue.Identify the disk ID of your external hard drive. Replace # by your real external disk ID in the command below:
select disk #Clean all partitions by typing the following (warning: this will erase all data from your external drive!):
    clean
Create the boot parition by typing the following followed by the enter key:
    create partition primary size=350
This will create a 350MB partition on your external driveFormat the partition in FAT32 by typing the following:
    format fs=fat32 quick
Set this partition to active by typing:
    active
Assign a letter to mount this partition. We will use letter B in our example. If B is already used on your PC, replace B by any other available letter:
    assign letter=b
Windows will detect a new drive and probably display a pop-up. Ignore that.Create the Windows installation partition using all the remaining space available on the external drive by typing the following:
    create partition primary
Format the new partition in NTFS:
    format fs=ntfs quick
Assign a letter to mount this partition. We will use letter O in our example. If O is already used on your PC, replace O by any other available letter:
    assign letter=o
Windows will detect a new drive and probably display a pop-up. Ignore that.Exit the disk partitioner utility by typing:
    exit
Step 3: Deploy the Windows installation image
Still using the command prompt in admin mode (you didn't close it, did you? ), locate the imagex.exe file mentioned in the "What you'll need" section and access its folder. In our example, we have put this file in C:\imagex\imagex.exe
Type the following and hit enter (remember to replace o: with the letter you have chosen in the previous step):
    imagex.exe /apply C:\wim\install.wim 1 o:
This will take some time. The Windows installation image is being deployed to your external driveOnce done, type the following to create the boot section (remember to replace o: and b: with the letters you've chosen in the previous step):
    o:\windows\system32\bcdboot o:\windows /f ALL /s b:
If you get an error message saying that you can't run this program on your PC, then most probably you are running on a 32 bits installation of windows and you're trying to deploy a 64 bits install. This means you did not read the important notes in the beginning of this guide
If you get an error message on the options that can be used with the BCDBOOT command, then it's because you're installing Windows 7, and the /f option is not supported. If that is the case, remove /f ALL from the command and retry.
Step 4: Boot from your external drive and install Windows
    Plug in your external drive:
If you've done all the previous steps from a Windows PC, unplug your external drive from your PC and plug it to your Mac, either on a USB3 or a Thunderbolt port.
If you've done all the previous steps from your Mac using a Virtual Machine, ensure the external drive is plugged in to a USB3 or Thunderbolt port. Using USB2 should also work but you'll get very poor performance so I don't recommend doing that.
Reboot your Mac and once the bootup sound is over, immediately press the ALT (option) key and release it only when the boot drives selection screen appears. If you did not get the boot drives selection screen, reboot and try again. The timing to press the ALT (option) key is quite short. It must not be too early or too late.
On the boot selection screen, choose "Windows" using the arrow keys on your keyboard, then press enter.
The Windows installation starts. Follow the on-screen instructions as normal. The installation program will restart your computer one or 2 times. Don't forget to press ALT (option) right after the bootup sound, and boot on Windows again each time to continue the installation.
    Step 5: Install bootcamp drivers
Once the Windows installation is complete, plug in the USB stick where you stored the bootcamp drivers (see "what you'll need" section), open it and right click on "setup.exe" and select "Run as admin". Follow the on-screen instructions. If you have an error saying that you can't run this program on this PC, obviously you have installed a 32 bits version of Windows and the bootcamp drivers for your Mac are made for a 64 bits version. You have to restart the whole guide and make sure to get a 64 bits version of Windows this time!
Once the bootcamp drivers are all installed, reboot and press ALT (option) after the bootup sound to boot on Windows again. And Voilà, you have Windows installed on your USB3/Thunderbolt drive running on your Mac.
Now each time you want to boot on Windows, press and hold the ALT (option) key after the startup sound and select "Windows", then press Enter.

Hi i'm trying to follow your guide, I installed windows 8 on bootcamp to do it planning to remove it after the operation is done, but i get stuck at part 3: every command i give to imagex i get a pop-up ftom windws asking how do I want to open this kind of file install.wim and imagex does nothing, what do i have to do to stop those pop-ups?

    Hi baltwo,
Im sorry but Im new to the community and I don't know how to address users directly. Hence intruding.
It would be kind of you to shed some light on the matter.
I'm running lion 10.7.5 and followed similar procedures but mail downloads every mail again after cataloging and indexing my earlier(snow leopard 10.6.5) mail. More details at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5373643
It would be great to find a solution as I'm struggling since two weeks.

  • Macbook pro 13" screen/applications freeze -- mouse continues working

    hi all,
i saw a few threads similar to mine, but none of them were answered.
basically, i was using netflix on my macbook pro which is a 13" that i purchased for school back towards the end of july 2010. its version 10.6.3 and i haven't had any problems with it until today.
It has frozen twice today so far, and the first time I was using photobooth, itunes, and firefox. photobooth was taking pictures and then all of a sudden I went to click the button and it wouldn't select. I thought this was weird because the mouse was still moving. I realized I couldn't click on anything but the webcam was still showing me moving and itunes was still playing the song normally. I did a hard shutdown.
I started up my laptop again and went to play a movie on netflix (this movie had been open, but was paused when it froze the first time).
I started playing the movie and when to pause it to take a phone call when I realized that it was frozen again because I couldn't select anything. I did another hard shut down and I've been on the web with it since trying to find an answer to my problem.
any answers would be super appreciated! and if you know of a thread where this has been answered that would help a lot too! thanks so much

there is a new development... i don't think its my screen freezing... i think it might be my mouse clicks aren't registering...
i was on a website just a few seconds ago, and i had highlighted something and as i went to click copy it wouldn't let me. but when i used two fingers it let me right click, and the mouse still moved around. Then i went over to my desk and moved my magic mouse around and low and behold it worked. I clicked a few things with my magic mouse and then thought, "hey i might as well try the trackpad" and for some ungodly reason the trackpad was clicking and working.....
i have no idea if these two events are related or if this is the reason for my other problem, but is anyone else having this problem?

  • Vista - Updating iTunes Library Error, Freeze, Blue Screen - Work Around?!

I may have a solution & partial root cause for the "Update iTunes Library" freeze / blue screen issue.
    Details:
    - I've been running Windows Vista since its release.
    - iTunes worked fine under Vista since my XP->Vista clean install.
    - I updated to iTunes version 7.1.1.5 a month ago and the problem started.
    - After installation, iTunes tried to update the Library and after a minute or two, it hung and then went to a blue screen. I restarted iTunes MANY times over the month and tried to re-install it - nothing worked.
    Solution? (for me anyway)
Recall that when you log into Vista, even if you're the only user, you DO NOT have administrator privilages. You are only granted those AFTER a request and authorization (I think this is where iTunes hangs). Now, this solution might be a stretch, but iTunes worked after I stumbled across this. I took two steps and am not sure which or if the combination worked...
    - I was working with system commands that required administrator authorization. So the system prompted me, as it does everything, and I was granted them. Was this key? I don't know.
    - I also copied the iTunes Library to my Desktop, started iTunes and let it create a new, blank, iTunes Library. I closed iTunes and copied my old iTunes Library file back from the Dekstop.
When I restarted iTunes, it started to update the iTunes Library and this time it completed successfully.
Not taking anything for granted, I did a shutdown/restart to make sure it was clean.
    - I did run into a blue screen AGAIN at shutdown. But this time it rebooted clean and iTunes has been running perfectly for 3 days.
    I hope this helps someone!

what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)
if the blue screen mentions a specific file, let us know what that is called too. (exact spelling, please.)
here's a reference on the sorts of things i'm asking about:
    Troubleshooting Windows Stop Messages
if you're just seeing a flash of a blue screen, we can use this technique to make hidden blue screens appear for us:
    1) Open your system control panel (Start->Control Panels->System).
    2) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    3) Click the "Startup and Recover" section's "Settings" button
    4) Verify that under "System Failure" the "Automatically restart" checkbox is not checked.
