10.6.8 killed my airport

My iMac worked flawlessly for 3 years.  Today after upgrading to 10.6.8 my iMac WILL NOT stay connected to my wireless network.  It will drop every 2-3 minutes.  The computer has never once done this before....I can only conclude that 10.6.8 is the culprit

After the 10.6.8 update the Airport file permissions were possibly not returned to their original state.
Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder, select your boot drive and Repair Permissions, enter the admin password if necessary.
Log into a admin account and run Software Update so Airport gets updated. Also toggle your System Prefrences > Secuirty > General > "Auto-update safe downloads list" on and then off.
After that download and run ALL the cleaning and maintenance aspects of the free OnyX and reboot.
http://www.titanium.free.fr/
And then use OnyX > Verify > Preferences (check the box for show only corrupted ones) and write down all the corrupted .plist files.
Use the free Easy Find to seek and Trash those .plists (or move them to the desktop) and reboot. They will get automatically rebuilt (minus your preferences of course which you need to reset.)

  • Airport Extreme Killed My Airport Express Network!!!

I have been an apple user since 1992 - NEVER HAVE I FELT SO FRUSTRATED!!!! Sorry to shout, but this is as bad as it gets - my kids are screaming at me and my wife laughing!! I have had a reasonably good Airport Express network running in my house with an Express as the primary and internet connected to it by the ethernet port. I worked fine for my Intel iMac and my daughters Intel MacBook, but my son had problems in his room. We then got an xbox 360 and wanted to connect that so I upgraded to an Airport Extreme - Disaster!. Firstly the net went intermittant! Then I rebuilt from scratch restting all devices to factory defaults; worse and worse, the network kept failing to find various base stations. Finally I cut the Extreme out of the loop and tried to rebuild the original network; now Airport utility won't see any base station after I configue it!! Please help if you can!!!

If nothing works, try a factory reset: disconnect the Extreme from power, press the reset button, plug in power while still pressing the reset button, release reset button after 5 seconds or so.
This method usually helps me with problems with my Airport Extreme and Express (this happens seldom by the way). The only disadvantage is that you have to set it up again completely.

  • 10.4.9 Intel update killed my Airport connection

Had the EXACT same problem with 10.4.8, so I eventually reverted back to 10.4.7. Once 10.4.9 came out, I thought I'd be safe, but after the update, my Airport connection constantly drops, sometimes several times a day, for no apparent reason. After it drops, the network is not visible and only a restart will return the connection.
    1. Firmware is up to date
    2. All security updates are in place
    3. Hard reset on AE fixed the problem for a couple of days, but no longer
    4. I have a 17" Intel iMac, Time Warner cable modem
    5. When the connection drops, AE light is still steady green
Called Apple support and the phone guy started in on my cordless phones providing interference. I knew that was going to go nowhere since five seconds before I installed 10.4.9, I had ZERO problems. It ain't my phones. I would just go to a wired setup, but I rely desperately on AE to stream my music. Any advice? I've trolled the forums for hours, but haven't found a solution...

After multiple calls to AppleCare, determined it was cordless phone interference (2.4Ghz). No idea why this interference doesn't exist prior to 10.4.8, but whatever. Got a new 6.0 DECT phone today and so far, no dropouts. $70 I wish I didn't have to spend...

  • Software Update killed my Airport Express!

Turned on my MBP today and left the room for just a minute. When I returned, the screen had a message saying (roughly):
"Your Airport software has been successfully updated".
I didn't ask for it to be updated, and I certainly did not click on any "OK" button giving it permission. Ever since, I can't get to the internet via my Airport Express. I've tried everything. Unplugged and plugged, left it unplugged for an hour and still won't light green. I tried every reset including the full "Factory Default" reset, and still it wont come on green.
I don't know what else to try. Apple wont talk to me without hitting my credit card for 50 bucks first, which strikes me as unfair. There should at least be a way to get someone to read an email of my problem and decide if there's any extenuating circumstances. I don't see how this can be my fault.
If I'm missing something here, and anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Steve Nathan

It sounds as though I am not the only one having problems with the Airport Extreme lately. I was running without any problems until about a week ago. For some reason or other I lost connection to the Airport and internet. I ran diagnostics and any other reboot until I finally had to reset the Airport to the factory settings by pushing/holding the button on the back. It has now happened every day this week. After I reset and rebuild my network the next day it's gone.
I'm running 7.4.1 firmware after reconfiguring--There are earlier versions listed so I don't know whether or not to give them a try.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm getting really tired of resetting.

  • Latest update seems to have killed my airport extreme

Did this happen to anyone else? I updated the firmware for my Airport Extreme on the 10th of July. I messed around with it for a day but it hasn't worked since the firmware upgrade. No matter what I do it can't see the internet. I have tried every possible reset, settings, etc. I can't get an appointment at a Genius bar because of the phone launch and this is becoming really annoying. Right now I'm using Ethernet and its fine, but I have lost all mobility and its the only computer in the house with internet at this point. Any ideas?

    Thank you for your response!
I tried the Safe Boot and it didn't work. (Except I did see the purple-spacey background at the log-in screen, which felt like a bit of an improvement)
I'm trying to repair disk permissions, but I'm not sure if it's doing anything or if it's just frozen. Does that usually take awhile?
Right now I'm just trying to get as much of my important stuff onto my harddrive as possible and then re-install the OS.
A bit of a different question, but this is my first Mac and it's been a nightmare, and any other Mac owner says that the problems I've been having with it aren't typical (freezes a lot, won't eject disks, won't wake up sometimes, runs really slowly when I change the resolution, runs pretty slowly if I have a few programs open, and now this), so if anyone else has gotten a dud Mac before, did you find that reformatting it helped, or did you have to take it to the Apple store and get it fixed?

  • Reboot kills my airport connection

Whenever I reboot my MBP, I loose my connection to my wireless router. I checked the keychain access and it is not listed (so I can deleted it and reconnect to it so it will save it). Any ideas on what I can do so it will just automatically reconnect?
    Thanks!

    Try the following:
If you use "Preferred Networks," instead of "Automatic" for your "By default, join" setting Location, try the following:
System Preferences > Network > Show > AirPort > AirPort tab
    - Delete all preferred networks with encryption
    - Add them again after manually connecting
(Note: It will be faster if you turn on "Automatically add new networks to preferred networks list" under "Options" of the AirPort network connection.)

  • Most Recent Software Update Killed the Airport

I installed the most recent update(or the software updater did) and after it was installed I lost all ability to connect to the wireless network in my Fraternity house. I know nothing was changed on the network, and I could connect to the network before the update. Does anyone know what could cause this and how I could fix this?

Ya... I was probally missing something and it fixed its self

  • Latest firmware update 6.3 and dead airport express basestation

My Airport Express basestation (aebs) is 13 month old. It suddenly went dead. No light, no reset, nothing.
    And maybe a coincidence:
It happened only 36 hours after I loaded the new 6.3 firmware update.
I wonder if anyone had the same experience regarding a dead aebs due to firmware update 6.3. At least - compared to the posts here - a dead aebs is not such a rare incident as one might wish it would.
      Mac OS X (10.4)

Exactly the same has happened to mine, although I don't recall doing a firmware update. Yesterday I just downloaded and installed iTunes 6.0.2 & QuickTime 7.0.4. However, when I came home from work this evening my Airport Express had no LED on as normal. It was cold and had obviously been off for sometime. The fuse it OK and it's just one month after the 1-year guarantee period. Sounds suspiciously like a plot to me....
What has Apple done to kill my Airport Express???

  • Has anyone got the AirPort Client Update 2009-00 to work

As I have frequently posted here SL has killed my Airport.
Having waited patiently for FOUR MONTHS Apple have finally issued AirPort Client Update 2009-00.
It makes no difference to me.
Has this actually worked for anyone?

In my case, I bought my MBP with Tiger then upgraded to SL and it made my airport behave randomly soo I opted to roll back the OS until a fix is made to the issue.

  • Wi-fi killed by World of Warcraft???

Okay this is very strange, and I am not sure if I can get help here, but when I get disconnected for WoW, it actually kills my airport as i can no longer connect to any network. Ethernet still works fine when this happens, and it only affects my computer in the network. Also when I restart the problem is solved?
Is there any thing I can do to try and find the problem? Is there anyway to reset the Airport card without restarting?

I have this problem too!! Do you have yours hooked up to an external display? I have my Macbook C2D with 2gb ram on an external 24" display and after about 10 minutes of playing I get disconnected from the servers and when I check my network connection WiFi just dies can't even find my Wireless AP I also tried playing by plugging it directly to the router via ethernet and the SAME thing happens!!!!! I tried restarting the network services and clearing the DNS cache but alas only a restart will fix it.. But if I play using the Macbook's built-in display the problem goes away. Anyone able to shed some light to this? cause it's VERY annoying.

  • New Airport update won't install on my PMG5!

10.5.8 killed the airport card on my Power Mac G5, and this morning I see there is an update released, but it's only for laptops! And the fix on that dutch site didn't work. I know it's a software problem because it began right after I updated my OS. And if I boot onto my other HD which is running 10.5.2, wireless internet is perfectly fine. What can I do here?

At least you have a hard drive with 10.5.2 that proves it works there. That narrows down what my user tip that is still being reviewed here:
If you have Macbook or MacBook Pro, and have upgraded to 10.5.8, you may experience slower than normal airport connection due to a bug found in the original 10.5.8 installer. Apple has released this update for MacBooks and MacBook Pros to address the issue:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/AirPortClient_Update_for_MacBook_and_MacBookPro
It may not help in certain third party routers, in which case, it is recommended that you contact the third party router manufacturer for a firmware update, and find out also if others have your exact same router, and have found a resolution with your issue. Wireless issues can be caused by the following:
    1. Interference on the same wireless channel.
    2. Single channel connection from some third party routers not being strong enough to deal with interference. Apple Airport Express, Extreme, and Time capsule wireless routers all support dual channel connections, and also support networking with Windows as well as Mac.
    3. Bad router tables in your router.
    4. Power surges.
    5. Interference from microwaves, or 2.4 Ghz non-cell wireless phones, whose signal is not tempered with channel hopping.
    6. Distances less than 2 feet may have many overlapping wireless waves causing interference from the wireless router.
    7. Distances greater than 150 feet from the wireless router.
    8. Walls with numerous pipes, improper ground wiring, file cabinets with numerous papers between the computer and the router.
    9. Run the hardware test that came with your computer, it may indicate an issue on the logicboard which could also impact your wireless card.
    10. Improper security on your wireless connection. Setting up a WPA2 connection is preferred over WEP, which is preferred over no password.
    11. 802.11n is a draft standard, meaning not all routers support it the same way.
    12. Data corruption in the wireless cache settings, caused by improper system maintenance:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1772235
    13. Migrating wireless settings with the Migration Assistant from a PowerPC to Intel Mac, or vice versa. It is better to follow these tips to avoid those problems:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=435350&tstart=0
Not everyone will get this problem.
    14. Apple Airport and Time Capsule firmware updates can be found on:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/firmware_hardware/
to suggest the bare minimum you either performed improper maintenance, or the wireless driver in your installation of 10.5.8 is not compatible with the wireless firmware of your router.

  • External video monitor kills wifi network link under Windows 7

I have a 2010 15 inch Macbook Pro; when I plug in the external monitor with the display port under Mac OS Lion, I have no problem getting access to my wireless local network or any network.  When I switch to Windows 7 thorugh bootcamp, I can get access without plugging in the external video cable.  I plug the external monitor, it kills my airport card and no access to the wifi.  I have remove the external monitor to gain access to the wireless network.  Windows 7 is up-to-date and the same thing for bootcamp.  Also I have a Star-tech dvi usb switch.
So what gives?  Star-tech dvi switich or it a Microsoft Windows 7 issue

Maybe this will help. Notice the bullet addressing external monitors. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1365

  • Airport Reception Worse in 10.5 Than 10.3

I was troubleshooting the poor reception on an upgraded Power Mac G4 (running 10.5.7) since it only had a couple bars of reception after moving it within 20 feet of the wireless router. I accidentally booted from another drive with 10.3 and noticed I had FULL bars! This suggests to me that a subsequent system update killed my airport software, but how can I downgrade?

The number of bars is not a reliable way to measure WiFi reception.
Download a WiFi sniffer utility such as
    AP Grapher
    iStumbler
    KisMac
    Airport Radar
    etc...
And use that to measure your signal strenghts.

  • My airport suddenly is missing

I haven't had any issues lately besides a some dropped signals for a few seconds iwth my older airport (UFO style). That is until tonight. On a rampage my cats knocked it off the shelf (this has happened in the past) and a restart of computer and airport solves it. However, not tonight. I can connect fine directly with the ethernet cable to the macbook pro, but my mbp cannot find my airport. Reset after reset after shut down. Help! I ran an update and and still nothing.
Did my cats kill the Airport once and for all?

Your cat's probably knocked something loose inside.
I would open it up and see if you can fix it yourself. Best resource for fixing it is here, .
