10.6.8 Macbook Pro firmware update problem

I installed a couple of updates for my MBP 10.6.8.  One was Safari, the other was brand new, released within the last week, I think it was a firmware update, and now the machine will not boot into OSX.  I have a Bootcamp Windows 7 partition that starts fine.  But if I let it boot, or select the Mac partition, it shows the apple logo, then a little progress bar below it that gets to maybe 5-10%, then starts over, then the computer powers down.
I have tried clearing the flash by holding option+command+P+S.  Didnt work.
Is there a way I can boot to a command prompt and clear this update out or something?  Or anyway to fix this myself?  From the Windows partition maybe?

So...fixed my issue and it was not related to the updates, it was just coincidence.
What I finally did was take a video of the startup screen and was able to see that what was happening was fsck was failing, and then the system just halted.  This info presumably makes it to dmesg, but not to system.log (huge oversight IMO).  So its not easily discerned.
Once I figured that out I googled around and this guy's page helped me fix the problem:
http://blog.jbheren.com/post/2011/02/09/repair-hfs-volume-on-osx
Specifically I had to boot into single user (command+S at the startup sound)
and issue:
fsck_hfs -ypr /dev/rdisk0s2
Then I did
reboot
and here we are

  • MacBook Pro firmware update after erase & install

    Hi,
I just tried to update from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11 with software update last night and got the error message a lot of people have been experiencing, then, got stuck at the apple logo with the never-ending spinning wheel... well... tried repairing disk, permissions, everything, but didn't work...
Now I reinstalled OS X with the dvd that came with my pro (10.4.6) and I noticed that when I run softwarte update, a specific MacBook Pro firmware update and some battery update didn't show up, does that mean I already have it? because it is firmware, the installation of OS X didn't erase it?
And to all those out there stuck at the boot screen, I'm trying the manual combo update (downloading from apple.com) and will tell if this works (thank god I backed up everything!)

    Good Morning,
To answer your firmware question, yes. Once applied a firmware update is burned into the chip on the device being updated and is not subject to being removed with an operating system, the only way to change that firmware is to update it with something else.
You should be fine that they aren't showing up because, as you said, you already have them. 

  • Macbook Pro Firmware update 1.5.1

So every single time I have done a software update I have gotten this Macbook Pro Firmware update. I always have the firmware update checked and it never goes away.
My current firmware boot version is: MBP31.0070.B02
    the software update says this:
This update fixes several issues to improve the stability of MacBook Pro computers.
After the firmware is successfully applied to your Mac, your Boot ROM Version will be:
    MBP21.00A5.B08 or MBP31.0070.B07
So the firmware never gets installed. Whats up with this?

Please excuse me if this seems a stupid question but I am a little confused by the various Apple software upgrades, I take the automatic upgrades as and when I receive notification. It is the firmware upgrades I do not fully understand, am I correct in assuming that this is a manual upgrade by the computer owner ? I own a 1st generation MBP the Boot rom ? version I have is MBP11.0055.B08, I would like to know if the new version 1.5.1 is suitable or a requirement for my machine or only for more modern versions of the MBP ?

  • Macbook pro software update problems

when i try to update my software on my macbook pro 17in. it times out and i get a message saying it was unable to update and it may be corrupted. Any reason why that would be or how i can fix it?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • MacBook Pro firmware update

I seem to have problems after installing the MBP firmware update. In the finder I can connect to my iMac, but the finder often crashes (is not responsive) when I try to open some of my iMac's folders.
    Anyone with the same trouble?

Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • MacBook Pro Firmware Updates in software Update

What are these 3 Firmware updates for? I get two sequential and one Keyboard firmware updates in the Software Updater, but don't know why I need to install them?

Thanks - My point was to ask why I need them? There are no problems with my 2.33 Ghz MBP, and I know from experience, not to just update everything that comes along.

  • Motion crashes - Macbook Pro Software update and Firmware update

Anyone out there that is working with Motion 3.0.1 on one of the new Macbook Pros (Santa Rosa) and has installed both the Macbook Pro Software Update 1.0 and the EFI Firmware update (for the 15 inch models)???
Motion 3 crashes on the Macbook Pros with the MBP Software update installed (see thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1028746&tstart=45
The solution so far is to wipe the hard drive and reinstall everything from scratch EXCEPT the software update 1.0. However, I'm trying to find out if anyone has installed the Firmware update, which requires the software update to be installed first, and if they are running smoothly.
    ???

I just restarted then tried to open InDesign again and it let me download a java update that seems to have fixed it.

  • MacBook Pro Video Update 1.0 problem

I downloaded MacBook Pro Video Update 1.0 (Snow Leopard) and I am using Mac OS X Ver 10.6.8 however it alerts that this software is not supported on your system. I have the problem of black screen of death.  I am using an extra display. I arranged mirrors displays so I can use the computer.
    What should I do?
By the way I am in Turkey.

I went the authorized service in Ankara Turkey. They said they have to change whole screen and wanted to get 800$. Of course, I rejected. Then, they said they have a second hand display connector cable (which was the suspected piece for the problem) to replace for $80. I accepted and gave $80. Problem fixed! My computer is still working perfectly.

  • Problem with MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1

I've installed the MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1 on my 17" MacBook Pro. Seems to have fixed any keyboard issues I may have been experiencing. But every time I run software update this particular update wants to be installed again. I've run the install three times and it's still being flagged as being needed.
    Anyone else having this problem?
Only thing that I suspect is that it's because I've got my HD formatted as case-sensitive. I've noticed that formatting a drive as case-sensitive will break several popular games.
Can't we standardize on case-sensitive volumes yet, it's the 21st century for crying out loud!

    I had the same issue.
How did you figure this out?
I was on the phone for almost two hours (mostly waiting) with support and they simply came up with 'Archive' and 'Store' and 'Rebuild' your system, which quite frankly would not have fixed this issue because I still would have a case-sensitive drive.

  • MacBook Pro SMC Update 1.6 - Freeze

    Hi all,
    Facts:
    model: MacBookPro8,1
    OS: OS X 10.7.5
    Story:
i got a Macbook Pro 8,1 (13,3" Early 2011) which worked flawlessly - until yesterday.
Yesterday I decided to install the MacBook Pro SMC Update 1.6 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1626) - a bit unusual for me, since i normally wait a few weeks until others tried such an update. I did nothing in parallel on my mac, just the update. After the installation process i rebooted my system to finish the update process, the scm update installation run, everything seemed to went fine.
But shortly after the login process, my System froze and i had to hard shutdown my macbook. The first 3 or 4 attempts to only switch on my computer i got only a flashing indicator led, as usual, but not display output, no start sound, nothing. I waited a few minutes, tried again, the system started to boot until the login window, but i had no time to input my credentials - the system froze again.
Since a got a bit computer experience, it's my day job, i first thought of a bad RAM. So i replaced it with two totally new ones (Corsair Mac Memory) and some older original Apple RAM, but nothing changed. I did the same with the harddisk, even i don't think it's related to a harddrive failure because of the symptoms, while trying to install a fresh OS - the system froze again.
After that i tried everything Apple proposed: SMC reset multiple times, NVRAM/PRAM reset multiple times, but nothing helped in my case.
So the current state is as follows:
    - The system freezes everytime, sometimes earlier, sometimes later. But normally within 10 seconds. (I observed, the longer the computer stays off, the later the freeze appears). After a hard shutdown, i've to wait a few minutes to get the computer to display anything.
    - I read the log files after installing the harddrive to another computer (it works fine there), but there seems nothing special (i could post it, if somebody need it). The system just stops responding.
I think, it MUST be related to the MacBook Pro SMC Update 1.6, because i had no problems at all before this firmware update, problems started after it.
Is anybody out there, who has another suggestion for me, or has the same symptoms?
    G,
    NoWay

I have MacBook Pro 13" (mid 2010) and similar problem (gray screen, system not start, noisy fan, etc.)
I applied last SMC firmware update 1.6
as a result I have unworking MacBook Pro.
When I have been looking table http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237 I am realised that link http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1626 on update for MacBookPro8,1 1.68f99 (SMC 1.6) and for MacBookPro7,1 1.62f7 (SMC 1.6)  is same. And then I booted from Installation Disk1 with 10.6.4 and saw that my version of SMC is 1.68f99 instead 1.62f7.
In my opinion it's the main reason of our common problem. Apple released not correct SMC update and this update made briks from our MacBook Pro!!!

Levi G B ... Also found another thread by Davidfromsurfside on 10/14/11 0703A with the same problem. I responded on his thread "I have the same problem. IOS5 on iPad1, iPad2 and iPhone4S all with iCloud on. Lion 10.7.2 installed on my MacBookPro and iCloud set up/on. Any new iCal entry on either iPad or on the iPhone ends up via iCloud on both iPads and iPhone. BUT NOT ON THE MacBookPro. And iCal entry on the MacBookPro does NOT GET SENT to iCloud.com or to either iPad or the iPhone. This is a huge problem for me because I do all my office scheduling on the iPad or iPhone but rely on the MakeBookPro to print out daily client lists. I REALLY need to get this fixed...it is causing major business issues. " No one so far has had a fix....  :(

  • MacBook Pro Software Update Results in Singlu-User Mode

    Hello,
Since I have had problems before with Software update, I have decided to install one item at a time to find out which update packages cause problems.
When I installed the latest "MacBook Pro Software Update", which is strongly recommended, I ended up getting stuck with the single-user mode and now I cannot get out. When I boot, I get a console instead of a Graphical User Interface. I am really tired of Tiger. I have used Linux for the past 9 years and found it to be excellent. I expected much more from Mac OS X when I first bought my system two weeks ago. I already did an "Archive and Reinstall" and I don't want to do it again.
How can I go back to the usual GUI environment?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    K.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    K.

    Hello,
Here is the solution to the problem. It is simply due to XCode installation. For some reason, one needs to perform the "MacBook Pro Software Update 1.0" after an "Archive + Install" before installing any other software.
If Xcode is installed before the update, something gets messed and the computer keeps booting to a Console instead of the GUI.
    Hope this helps to others,
    K.

  • MacBook MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1

I am having the same issue many others are having in regards to the MacBook MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1 installing again, and again, and again, and again, ... Maybe you see the point.
I have browsed the Discussions, and tried some suggestions, (case sensitive) but it still installs, again and again, and again...
I am a little worried why Apple has not addressed this. This problem has existed since 12/18/2007. I think we have endured this long enough. If apple is not going to provide help, are there any users out there listening that have spent effort and found a solution.
    I am all Ears!!!
    Thanks, Steve

I have tried the solution listed here about case sensitive journaling. However, it did not help me.

  • MacBook MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1 continues to appear

This has been the first really strange issue since I upgraded to Leopard. Ever since the MacBook MacBook Pro Software Update 1.1 in Software Update, it continues to appear as if it was not installed. If I look at my installation log, it shows that I have installed it about 9 times since it was released. Here are the last few entries in my installation log:
2007-12-21 22:17:05 -0500: Installed "MacBook MacBook Pro Software Update" (1.1)
    2007-12-21 22:17:59 -0500: Installed "Security Update 2007-009" (1.1)
2007-12-21 22:26:34 -0500: Installed "MacBook MacBook Pro Software Update" (1.1)

2008-01-05 22:32:22 -0500: Installed "MacBook MacBook Pro Software Update" (1.1)
Is it safe to ignore this update? What is going on? Is there something wrong with my system? I haven't noticed any other problems.. I have no idea how Mac OS X determines if I need an update or not.

    OK, here's what i did:
    1) navigate to the: /Library/Updates sub-directory
(as in: "Macintosh HD" - "Library" folder - "Updates" folder
    2) there should be a file named, "index.plist" - this is
the definition file for the update - i suspect this should
be removed by the Updater once the update is complete.
    3) rename the file (don't delete it) ... i renamed the
    file to, "index.plist.onhold"
you probably don't have to, but i rebooted the system, to
ensure nothing broke. afterwards, i did a "Software Update"
and it reported the system is up to date.
