10.6.8 + moved Home Folder = problem?

I've got a 2008 MacPro with 4 hard drives. When I installed the extra drives, I moved my Home Folder off the boot drive and onto one of the spare drives using Accounts preference->Advanced options. This has worked like a champ for several years (10.5 & 10.6).
When I did the upgrade to 10.6.8 from 10.6.7, the boot process now hangs on the grey Apple POST screen. I've tried single user mode plus resetting the PRAM and nothing works. I had to revert to 10.6.7 to get it boot.
Here's what I did to troubleshoot:
Downloaded and ran Combo update
I've run Disk Utility and the drive shows no issues.
Ran Disk permissions.
Tried booting in Single User mode
Tried booting in safe mode
Tried booting in Verbose mode
None would get past the POST screen.
Plus: Installed 10.6 on a spare drive and updated to 10.6.8 and have no issues as long as I keep the Home Folder on the boot drive.
Here's how I got my system back but not running 10.6.8
Re-installed 10.6 and did combo update to 10.6.7 then reset my user account to point to old home folder. System works just like prior to 10.6.8.
Anyone else have this issue?

well, it's caused by software only, there is nothing wrong with airport hardware

How I Solved My "Can't Import My Home Folder" Problem While Staying Sane

This may be a well-known work-around for Time Machine and Migration Assistant, but I didn't find any reference to it in searching in Google (which included some threads here), so I thought I'd post it in case anyone else is experiencing similar problems.
I was having problems with some program install permissions and tried fixing them in more traditional ways without success, so I decided it was a good day for an Erase and Reinstall of Leopard.
I didn't want to copy my entire Home directory's contents and I have 6 HDs (four internal and two external) totaling about 1.5TBs. So, to prepare for the reinstall, rather than use Backup, I copied all important files to my other drives and then I copied my Home directory to another drive in the machine. Satisfied that everything was backed-up, I reinstalled Leopard using the Erase and Install option and soon had a good system, fully updated.
However, when I went to copy the Home Directory I kept getting errors saying that I can't alter these files and folders, even when I drilled down into the subdirectories. I didn't try copying individual files, but then I had no desire to do so given the amount of time that would take.
I looked around but could find no good solution. However, I did come up with a workaround and this is what I did:
First, I moved my Home Folder designation to the one on the backup hard drive by:
1) Go to System Preferences
2) Click the lock to make changes and enter your user password
3) Right-Click on your User Account and select "Advanced Options"
4) From the drop-down window, to the right of the "Home Directory" box select "Choose..."
5) Navigate to the backup User Account home folder and select it and click "OK
6) Relock the Accounts pane
7) Now you can delete the "old" Home Folder under your OS drive: Users/user account
8) Now just copy the backed-up Home Folder (that is now your real Home Folder) to the OS drive: Users/user account
9) Repeat steps2, 3 and 4, this time selecting your now moved Home Folder in the OS drive: Users/user account
10) Now you can delete the backup or keep it AS a backup.
I know this is a kludgey, wrong way to do backup and that Backup is the way to go, but for those out there who don't do it or have some problem restoring it, this is a possible way around so that you don't end up having to restore everything by hand.
This workaround may have already been discussed and well-known, but I had not seen it and am posting this in the hopes that it will help someone in trouble.

There is a "proper" way to do what you have done. First, one must create an account within the new installation using the exact same username and short name that was used in the old installation. Then, one enables the "root" account and logs in as root.
Within the root account, the local HOME folder that was created for the user is placed in the trash, then replaced with a (same-named) copy from the backup. THat HOME folder copy will be onwed by root, so this command must be run in Terminal:

In the above command, all instances of "username" are replaced with the user's short name. For example, if the user's name is "fred," the command would be typed exactly like this:

The command is executed when <RETURN> is pressed. NOTE: The specific command listed above applies only to 10.5.
One would then log out of the "root" account, and into the account in question. If all seems well, one would log back into the root account, empty the trash, then log out of and disable the root account.
Alternatively, if there is a Time Machine backup that can be used, the Time Machine interface can be used in the root account to replace the trashed HOME folder, instead of copying manually in the Finder. This would generally be a better method to use, if possible.

Moved home folder -- still syncing to old location

So we ran out of space on our server. We're in the process of moving the users' home folders over to the RAID, where there's plenty of room, but for two of us, the two that also use Portable Homes, we've run into a little snag...
When PHD sync runs, it syncs to the old home folder location, not the new one.
Any Ideas?

For iMovie to see projects and events on an external drive (that is not the Home folder), they must be in the iMovie Projects and iMovie Events folder at the top level of the external drive. Further, the iMovie Projects folder and the iMovie Events folder must have the extension .localized.
However, if you move them there you risk that the Projects will no longer maintain their links with the Events. The Projects will look for their event clips at the Home folder. You can test this if you like by moving the iMovie Projects and the iMovie Events folders to the top level of the external drive. Then restart iMovie. iMovie should see the projects, but you may see yellow triangles when you open them for edit, which would indicate that iMovie cannot find the event clips at the path it was expecting to find them. (If it does see them, then you are done).
The safest course would be to move the Projects and the Events to the current Home Folder on the internal drive. Make sure they work. Then move them back to the external drive following the instructions in this User Tip.

Moving home folder.

I just installed an SSD in my MBP, and put a fresh install of Mountain Lion on one of two partitions. I previously had a normal hard disk with multiple partitions and my home folder on a separate partition from my OS partition, and followed these directions to enable this:

So on my current setup I created a test account and transfered it as before, and restarted. The new test account with the home folder worked just fine, as expected.
However, when I attempted to move the account I have been using the few days I've had the computer set up already, I am having no luck. The home folder will not finish copying; it stops at 4.99, 4.98 or 5.00 gigabytes, claiming it needs 10 more seconds to complete the copy but never finishing. There are 5.6 gigabtyes in my home folder, mostly made up of disc image downloads I needed to set up the computer, some music iTunes downloaded from my iTunes Match account and my Dropbox folder.
I have tried it with Dropbox running and after quitting Dropbox, but it refuses to complete the copy operation.
I give up. What am I doing wrong?

I appreciate your response, but I don't want this to turn into a side debate about SSDs and partitions. This is one of the reasons I rarely post to these discussions! Please stay relevant to the question.
That said, I have had two spinning hard drives fail in the last week, and I made the decision to use SSDs from now on. I installed a Data Doubler and an OWC Electra 3G 120 GB drive, and soon I'll also have the OWC 960 GB drive in my MBP. I'll need little else except for backup.
I have made the decision to move my home folder to a different volume as my boot volume, but most of the data, i.e. Lightroom master image files and iTunes Media folders will be on the big SSD.
Anyway, to put this to bed I just deleted my old user account and opened a new one. I still don't know why it wouldn't transfer over but now I don't care.

Moving Home Folder to Windows XP Network Folder

How does one move the home folder on a Mac to a network folder located on a Windows XP host? I think it is accomplished using Netinfo, but I tested it on my 13" Macbook and the Macbook will no longer login. Detailed instructions would be appreciated.
Also, I read that it is possible to cache the home folder so that when the network location is not available, the home folder contents are still available - syncing is perfomormed when network is again available. How is this accomplished or is this only available when OS X Server is on network?

I don't have a solution that directly addresses your question, but between two Macs, it is possible to have a user account on one OS X client machine mount a folder on a second OS X client machine during login and use that as the "home" folder.
On the machine where the folder resides, the folder must be set up as "share point", the name of the share may have to match the name of the user's "home" folder on the user's end, and the username and password to access the share point have to match the username and login password of the user account.
On the client side, the user's entry in the "NetInfo" database has to have an additional property added to it (the 'home_loc' property), containing the url to the share. The presence of this property tells the login process that the "home" folder may not be a simple folder, and for example, is used by "Filevault" to get the system to automatically mount the filevault disk image before actually logging the user in. For an AFP share, the value of the 'home_loc' property looks something like this:<pre><homedir><url>afp://xx.xx.xx.xx/sharename</url><path></path></homedir></pre>It might be worth a try to see if something similar works with an SMB share. However, if the share is unavailable for any reason, it likely won't be possible to log in to the account at all.
Of course, if the windows share is already mounted (and there are ways, though I don't know them, to have a windows share mount automatically at startup for example), then the process would be much simpler - just change the user's 'home' property to the path to the folder on the mounted share.

Moving site folder problem

I have a web site in a folder on my hard drive, if I open the
home/index page in DW I see all the files. Now I need to copy the
entire folder to another drive so I can make that the root folder
so I can upload to server. But soon as I copy the folder anywhere
else none of the files show, no bg no jpgs. The css file is still
attached

I had to recreate a page for a client, in order to preview
the page I made a folder on my website so I can preview without
disturbing the clients site. Now that the page is done I want to
upload to their server. so I tried to copy the folder with the
files and make a new root folder for a new site but I keep getting
broken links.
I never redefined the site, how do you do this? On my hd I
have 5 sites in a folder called DW Local inside that folder are 5
sites in 5 seperate folders in site1 I have a folder with the file
I need to upload to a client's server. I can open the file within
DW locally, preview in browser and even see the file on my server.
How do I move the folder with the files to another location without
breaking the links, has to be a way?

How to relocate Home folder to second internal drive

What is the process to migrate my Home Folder from the boot drive (256Gb SSD) to a new internal drive (960Gb SSD)? Can this be accomplished in finder or should one use the Terminal window?

Interesting, I'm having the same issue on my MacBook Pro that has both an SSD (for the OS and Apps) and a Hard Disk in place of the Superdrive. This config worked just fine with Mountain Lion; since upgrading to Mavericks this morning, I am unable to log into my personal account that has its home folder on the hard disk.
Unfortunately, it also seems to be an issue with the library folder, as I've been able to solve this issue with symlinks just fine with the exception of Library: the system keeps asking me to key in my password because the Library folder "needs to be repaired".
I can't move my Library folder to the SSD, as it is way too big (for whatever reason) - the SSD is only 96 Gig.
What is so different here is that the hard disk in the system is encrypted - I think this is the problem. I don't understand why, though, because under ML, I just logged in as admin after every reboot, which mounted the encrypted disk and then logged out / logged back in with my user account - it worked just fine.
Something seems to have changed with Mavericks regarding making available the encrypted HD...
Oddly enough, on my Mac Mini at home, which also has the SSD/HD pair, the moved home folder works fine - of course, here the HD isn't encrypted...
I hope someone has a fix for this, otherwise I'll have to go back to ML!

How can I get 10.8 to recognize my home folder that was moved to another drive?

I installed an SSD in my MacBook Pro a while back and replaced the optical drive with a regular SATA hard drive and moved my user folder to the larger drive. Unfortunately, Moutain Lion didn't like that, I can no longer log in to my account (I am assuming the relocated user folder is the problem, perhaps it is not?). Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Are you able to log into the machine with a different account (like an administrator account)? If so, open Directory Utility (/System/Library/CoreServices/Directory Utility.app) and go to the "Directory Editor" tab, and select your user in the list on the left (the one that you moved to the second drive). What is the value for "NFSHomeDirectory" for that user? The upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion could have reset this value (since having home directories on drives other than the boot drive (I think) isn't supported). Have you tried reapplying the procedure you used to move your home folder to the secondary drive prior to the upgrade?

Home folder/shortname rename problem

So I've run into a bit of a problem with my home folder now. It started when I made my shortname something that I didn't want and so I tried to change it. I tried to do so in the finder side menu by just renaming it. Little did I know that this was the completely wrong way to go about it. I've tried to change it twice too before I really realized what was happening. So now in my Users folder, I have my short name main user folder as well as two other folders that are not associated with any user accounts. Upon making the switch each time, data moved to the new folder and is no longer in the original. The special windows on the left side menu of the finder window have also changed to default folder icons instead of the special music, movies, documents, and pictures icons.
So basically, I need help restoring everything back to the way it was (one home folder in the Users folder) without losing any of the data that's in each of the new "home folders". Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Enter "Rename Home"
Read the first Support Article
Here is an extract of this article:
- In the Finder, go to the /Users folder.
- Locate the new home directory, which bears the users' short name.
- Add "_new" to the new home directory's name.
- Rename the old home directory to the user's correct short name.
- Log out and back in with the affected user account.

Problem syncing Mobile account home folder

I'm trying to get mobile accounts working correctly so that i can support users (including myself) having laptops and iMacs with files all in sync. My initial tests seem to go well, but when I started moving the first user account over (mine) I noticed a number of errors appear. Now I've not done much with OS X programming, but I've done quite a bit of Unix systems work. The client appears to be getting an EAGAIN error (essentially that the syscall didn't complete, but not that it failed). Ideally, it should try again, and perhaps there is something I can set that will have it do a couple of retry attempts before giving up?
However, the error on the server side is the likely culprit. I don't know what the error message regarding com.apple.SystemConfiguration means, but my googling for hints implies that it is some sort of error connecting over the network. To try and debug that, I had both machines connected to the same switch with firewalls turned off and the error continues. The previous lines imply that it is trying to delete a file that it created from the local disk. What bothers me about that is that in the WGM I set the home directory to be "afp://servername/Users" and it shows that it should be either "afp://servername/Users/synctest" or "/Network/Servers/servername/Users/synctest" but the server is accessing the home folder directly, so why an issue with network reachability?
Can anyone offer any hints as to what I should be looking for? I had hoped that PHDs would solve the whole multiple computer issue, but they don't seem to be working reliably for me. Since I get this issue consistently I'm guessing that there is something misconfigured on my end.

I've done the deletion of those folders a number of times, with no luck.
The most recent attempt to get this to work was:
1. Delete ~/.FileSync and ~/Library/FileSync from the server machine.
2. With a brand-new install of OS X on a laptop, create a local administrator, join the server, then login as the user account that wants a mobile account
3. Look at logs

I'm quite frustrated with the whole situation at this point. I'm sure some folks have gotten it to work, but since it has exceptions like this silently, it slowly corrupts the data in an account. I still want to get it to work, but am skeptical that it will.

Hard drive died - multiple problems with backed up home folder

My friend called me when she started having some problems with her home iMac. After we did went through a myriad of troubleshooting items, I determined that her hard drive was failing and suggested she backup her home folder immediately to another drive. She copied her home folder over to her old Mac and took the iMac into the Apple Store for further diagnostics. Sure enough, her hard drive had failed and they replaced it for her.
She reinstalled Leopard and set it up with a new account. We tried using the Migration Assistant to copy her old home folder back over but because she copied it rather than using Time Machine, Migration Assistant doesn't see it as a viable home folder. I'm very comfortable using the Terminal since I support both Macs and Linux in my department so I logged in as root and copied over her folders to the new account. That generally worked but we now have a ton of permissions problems of which Disk Utility doesn't fix. I'd like to start fresh again from her backed up home folder. So my question is if I can't use Migration Assistant to move over her old home folder, how do you make OS X see her old home folder as a viable account? (I hope this makes sense.)

I would suggest the following.
make a new temp admin account and get rid of the new account she made already. log in as the temp user and copy the old home folder from the external to /Users. then go to system preferences->accounts and make a new account with the same short user name as the name of her old home folder. It will say that a home directory by that name already exists and ask if you want to use it. say "yes". this should recreate that user and take care of all permissions issues.

How do I go about moving from a Macbook to a iMac with NAS when my home folder is too big to fit on the 250 GB SSD?

So I've grown out of my hard drive and am moving to an SSD. It's only 250 GB while my new NAS will be 10 TB.

I am most worried about migrating my data. My home folder is too large to just throw on the SSD.

I moved my itunes media folder to my public folder in my home folder so that my wife can share my music when she logs on as a user. Since doing this Aperture cannot locate any itunes music files and so I cannot add any music to a slideshow. All of my existing slideshows no longer play music. Can anyone help?

Thank you for your prompt response - I did as you said and did a drag and drop into the iTunes window - it imported and got my album art from the net. When I started Itunes with the shift key down I was prompted to choose a library but since I copied over the media folder and not the library folder I was unable to select that so I guess I will have to create a new library and add in all the music, videos, etc. unless I wait for my laptop and export the library or at least that seems to be the case? In short, all my data (iTunes media folder) is on my external drive and can be added to the blank iTunes screen but I can not choose a library folder. Is there anyway around completely making all those playlists again? I am not sure my laptop will survive the shop with data intact and really hate to start over on those.
In an unrelated question - I collect old TV shows from the 1950's. Can I make playlists within the home video folder somehow? In other words like one for Quiz shows, one for comedies, one for police and detective shows, etc. while I am remaking all my playlists for my music if I end up having to go that route?

Problems Moving Home

I phoned BT to advise them that I was moving home on the 28 June, and that I would like to transfer my phone and broadband to my new address, the phone line was turned on but I was told broadband would not be available until 5 July. I was told that my login address would change by adding a 1 after the first part of my login. I have received new login details but my homehub still works with my previous details, which confuses me a little.
This morning I received a final bill for my previous address which included cancellation charges, I phoned and after the usual 20 minutes of automated voices was advised that the charges would be waived.
Now I receive an e-mail to say the e-mail address I held previously would be terminated, and they were sorry to see me go. The prospect of my third session of automated merry go round does not appeal. My request seemed simple enough, transfer my services to my new address, does anyone have any advice please?

This is my first post here, I have had to join to see if my problem may be sorted or advice given for a resolution.
I also called BT back on the 10 May 2010 saying I was moving home on the 20th, When the time came they had cancelled my Broadband and activated only the phone line. BT assured me I would have Broadband setup in the following week, which didn't happen. So I called again, and the same thing was promised, which didn't happen. A month later I was in the same situation, so decided to move to another provider (Sky and Virgin telephone), however, they said that my line was not BT's. I assured them the bill I was getting was from BT, so they said that ot must have been an error on the side of BT and therefore they couldn't give me broadband unless they ordered another phone line from BT!. I went back to BT yet again (must have been the 6th time by now, and requested to get my broadband cancelled.
I reapplied to BT Broadband shortly after around 5th of Aug 2010 and received the equipment the following week but was later called and assured I would get broadband by the following week, Last time I was getting broadband was on the 12th of September... just to let me know that it wasn't done and that I would have to wait until the 20th of September... now, guess what has happened today (20th) ? nothing. Still waiting. What is happening to BT? Had been a loyal customer for quite a few years now. I am very dissapointed.

Small problem after moving music folder

I moved my music folder to an external drive and used the consolidate library afterwards. All the music was moved with no problems and I have no exclamation points anywhere.
My only problem was I had purchased three iPod games. They are still located in the old folder on my Mac drive but they no longer show on iTunes so they have been removed from the iPod. How can I get these games back into iTunes?

I posted just before you did that this was why they were not showing up. Problem is solved. The Phaze game also has a playlist and I got it to recreate the playlist by deleting it then restarting iTunes. I added songs to it and then resynced. No more problems.
