10.6.8 - No audio out (but internal speaker fine) - MBP5,5

After upgrading to 10.6.8, plugging in my earphones or headphones does squat. My internal speaker still works fine though
I've tried the AppleHDA rollback (to 10.6.7 version) to no avail  - each time either audio disables totally or I get the "Incorrectly installed extension" error
The most interesting thing is my problem seems subtlely different from the 'popular' audio problems. Most bizarrely, audio out works until I log in (works on the login screen). It dies and I receive asserts on the console after logging in though (I'm not on the machine and I can't remember the exact assert message but something about failure during GOTO in some audio handler)
I haven't tried making another user account (to see if it's account specific) but I have tried deleting all manner of user-specific audio plists as well as doing SMC reset, permissions repair etc.
Any ideas? + Anyone have the same problem? (I'm presuming this is specific to this MBP + config)

one thing i have just tested i can copy files from my mac desktop to my macbook fine mmm!

  • Audio out from internal speaker, how?

I purchased iPhone 3G 8GB, before that I have been using iPod touch. With iPod touch audio from games etc came out from internal speaker if I did not plug earphones. But for some reason that does not work with iPhone 3G.
Only very few apps uses internal speaker with iPhone 3G, like iPod app. But rest of apps does not play audio before I plug earphones. Is there away to fix this or is there something wrong with my new iPhone 3G? I purchased two days a go.

all sound should come out of speaker if headset isn't plugged in. check in sound settings that "silent" vibrate isn't on.
also some apps have there own volume settings so even if you turn the apps sound down the phones other sound stays the same, such as the ringer..

  • Switching Audio-Out to internal speaker with Audio still plugged in?

    Hello,
unfortunately I snapped my optical audio plug in my iMac and now it's stuck in the jack. What a mess. Until I take it to the service, I would like to use my internal speakers. Most unfortunately, as the part of the plug is still stuck in the jack, the iMac recognises external speakers.
Is there a way to switch to the internal speakers by software?
    Thank you!

As an alternative, you can get a USB to Audio adapter which plugs into a USB port and has audio input and output jacks. That should enable you to use your external speakers, bypassing the broken audio jack.
StarTech sells [THIS MODEL|http://www.startech.com/item/ICUSBAUDIO-USB-20-to-Audio-Adapter.aspx] for $23. I'm sure there are others.

Run MDP to HDMI for picture. Use a cable like this to run sound from your audio out on your Mac to your TV's audio in.  That's about all  you can do.

  • Audio - Only through Internal Speaker

I have just done a re-install of Tiger to attempt to resolve an issue with sound and FCEHD. I am close but still not there.
I note up front - I have nothing installed on the machine except Tiger and FCEHD.
I do have Harman/Kardon sound sticks - which are USB speakers.
The computer (iTunes, System Sounds etc) functions through the speakers - however - audio from FCEHD is forced through the system speaker.
Please help! Am I forced to buy new speakers? Apple always has me spending MORE money
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Clean Install of Tiger

May I ask what you use as a work around?
I just noticed that if I change my system preferences to digital out - the internal speaker no longer functions with FCEHD - so now I am thinking that I can run a optical to the input of my M-Audio box and monitor it that way - or it may even feed back into the USB speakers. I feel stupid having to rig up a $4,000 computer system...

  • Water Damage .. Everything works fine but internal speaker

i don't know y .. i was using ipod near around swimming pool... .anyway.. i dropped it.. while my ipod play music..
i coundn't turn off my ipod.. i was so dumb..
now..everything works fine..but internal speaker doenst work..
when i unplug headphone and then use volume it shows headphone volume ...not regular volume.. ..
is that meanning internal speaker broke?

I would like to reply to make a final update. I was fixing a screen for a friend and had all the tools that came with the screen. I decided I might as well have a peek at mine and maybe blow dry inside my phone.
Well I pulled the LCD cable and could see slight corrosion on the one corner and what looked to be a little black. I figured it was shorting on that corner. I cleaned with some contact cleaner and scrapped it off gently as best I could.
Plugged everything back in and bam she works. I understand this voids my warranty but I figured I was out of warranty with the water sensors triggered.
Thanks again for your help and advice!

  • No audio out on internal speakers or headphones from external device

I'm using an intel iMac 17" I tried to plug in an external cassette deck, and listen to it through the internal speakers. Even though all system prefs for audio work as expected, and I can see the audio meters on screen operating, nothing will induce it to play sound either through the internal speakers, or headphones.
The audio is certainly going in there, as it recorded perfectly in iMovie. The internal speakers work perfectly for alerts, iTunes, the web, everything. But no external device will work.
I've tried an iPod, a microphone, and a cassette deck, all with the same result. I've launched Garage Band as this can upset the midi player, but it's fine. I've visually checked the settings, no problem.
As an alternative I also tried an iMic and stopped using the jack input on the iMac. Still nothing. I plugged headphones into the iMic, nothing. No audio will play unless it's already on the Mac. External audio goes in there and dies before it reaches the speakers.
All the visual info I get in the sound panel regarding connection options, output etc, is exactly as expected, I just can't get any audio at all.
Does anyone have any suggestions? There's only a few day's warranty left...
    Many thanks.

    Hello David,
Thanks for the pointer. I looked at the website for Linein, and I already have Audio Hijack pro installed, which contains this application. When I ask AH to record the system audio, the volume meters are dead, I hear nothing, and record nothing - unlike iMovie.
When I do ask it to record, I can hear a thumping sound from the Mac speakers, but nothing else.
I'm really desperate for a solution to this; I can't understand why it's so hard to achieve. If it was just the line in socket I'd suspect that, but a USB connection as well? I don't understand that at all.

  • Having a MBPr late 2013 and having a sound problem the sound does not come tom the headphones even its all the way up and when i remove the headphones it docent come out the internal speaker either ? any idea how i fix this?

the sound do not come out the headphones sometimes altho its all the way up in the setting and when i remove the headphones the sound doesnt come from the internal speaker either and only a reboot fixes the problem and thats annoying! any idea how tto fix this?

Hello. I've been able to play sound without problems through headphones or external speakers to date - the output always switched to these automatically until today. Now, sound output continues through internal speakers even if I plug in headphones or external speakers.
    - I tested the headphones and speakers on other devices: they work fine.
    - When I plug in headphones or speakers into the audio output port (I have verified that I'm not using the input jack) the devices are not detected and are not listed under the output tab in system preferences-sound.
I concluded from this that I probably had a problem with the audio port, so to test that I tried the following. I plugged a powered multi-USB device with ports for microphone line-in and headphone line-out into the USB port and switched it on. I verified that it was working by plugging a USB stick into the multi-USB device - this was recognised successfully, so the device was clearly working. I then plugged in headphones and speakers into the audio line-out on the multi USB device - but still no sound came through them (and tey were not listed among output devices) and the Mac continued using internal speakers.
What should I do? Does the latter test suggest that the problem does not lie with the audio port, or is my test not conclusive? What would you advise?
    Many thanks indeed!

  • My headphone jack is unresponsive and audio still comes out of internal speaker

I went to listen to a YouTube video without bothering my wife; plugged in my headphones (both Apple ear buds and SkullCandy cans) but nothing came through them and the audio continued to pipe through the laptops speakers. Plugged in and out 7-8 times. Rebooted. No change.
First time this has happened. Thanks in advance.

CORRECTION: I'm running Lion 10.7.2 (not 10.6.3 as listed)

  • Headphone jack distorted, but internal speakers fine?

I haven't even had it a day and I've already run into problems on my Macbook 2.2GHz C2D. It seems the internal speakers work just fine for music, but when I plug in headphones or earbuds into the output jack the vocals and anything that's not panned hard left/right basically goes away. And when I plug in a stereo system to the output jack it gives me a loud low frequency hum. This happens both in Leopard and in XP (I have both installed on the macbook). No red light in the output jack, and everything else works just fine (although I recently noticed I no longer get an XP boot screen... Kind of odd, but it may have to do with the fact that I have so much RAM installed).
What's weird is, if I go into the system sound preferences either in XP or Leopard and mess with the left/center/right balance, all the way left or right the vocals come back in (although it's still in both ears, which it shouldn't be), but when you center the balance you lose everything that is centered in the mix (mainly, the vocals and any main instrument that's not panned hard left/right).
I tried updating my drivers, using different headphones/earbuds, wiggling the jack around, different songs and players, even went so far as to reformat and reinstall Leopard. Still messed up :-[
The only aftermarket modifications I've made has been an upgrade from 1GB to 4GB RAM and a boot camp install of XP. Unfortunately, as I'm going to be using this computer mainly for Pro Tools music production and editing, I really need the headphone jack to be at 100%!
Any suggestions? I'm thinking it's hardware related, as it happens both in XP and Leopard with all the latest drivers installed.

Try switching back to your previous ram and see if there is any difference. It may be hardware as you say, and a quick trip to your Apple tech should verify that. I work with audio too ...I like to use the Griffin iMic for both sound in and out - it's a USB devise that'll give you a better signal and keep your line in/out ports free so you're not jarring them when you have the small 1/8th adapters/cables plugged in.

  • Line-out or internal speaker option

I have my iMac hooked up to my home stereo with a mini to RCA cable and i am trying to figure out a way to switch from home stereo to internal speakers without having to unplug the cable every time. Any help would be great. Thanks.

    Hello,
do you think i will be able to do it using the
    optical output?
    I don't know.
I edited my original post with a link to a program you could try.
Now, if that doesn't work, then I do have one other idea that just came to me.
You could get a USB audio output for your speakers. Now, with a USB audio output device, you would be able to change your audio output option using the "Sound" preference pane in the Mac OS X preference panel.
I think Griffin has a product for that.
So, that might be an option.
    Hope this helps.

  • Buzzing audio out of left speaker only during dvd playback

Anyone else have this problem. I can play cds fine and all other audio sounds fine, but when i play a dvd i get a weird buzzing out of the left speaker. I should also note that it is not constant, it occurs with things such as loud voices and some music.

Now i can confirm that it happens in quicktime as well. Is this hardware or software related? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also, it isn't so much a buzzing as it is almost like an echo after some loud speach.
