10.6.8 on a MBA -- will wife see a difference?

My wife uses a mac.com address on Mail and is not interested in any so-called "benefits" of iCloud.  When I move her from mobile.me, will there be any obvious changes for her?
Her mac.com address is one of those associated with my mobile.me account and I will be grudgingly moving to Lion and iCloud on my Macs, since I want the syncing with my iPads.

iCloud is not supported on OS X 10.6.8. However she can upgrade her MobileMe account to iCloud and use the mail part of the iCloud service by entering the Mail Server Information in her mail app. Once this is done it would essentially look and behave as it did before.
Some users have apparently encountered issues using this information in pre-Lion set ups (I haven't), Roger Wilmut has kindly provided instructions for those who find themselves with this problem.
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Tiger
One area that concerns me is the way that you say her address is associated with your MobileMe account. Is her address one of your aliases or is this a family MobileMe account that you are talking about. I don't think she will be able to migrate an alias.

    Will it not be noticeable?

It would not be as noticable as one would think. The speed of the OS will come from the SSD portion of the drive. The SATA portion is mostly used for data storage which the drive only has to access as needed, not constantly. So over all, there is a bit of a difference but not enough to make a big impact.

  • Will I see a difference if I up grade?

I am using an 24" iMac with a 2.66 GHz intel core 2 duo with 8 gigs of Ram, and
NVIDIA GeForce 9400 for editing with FCP X.
Will I see a notable difference if I upgrade to a  27" iMac with 2.7 GHz Quad Core intel i5 and a AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 512 Mb memory
    Thanks

Yes you will. Far better CPU as well. Everything will be faster and smoother.

  • Will I see a difference...?

In February I stupidly purchased a new imac 10 (21" Intel Core 2 Duo 3.06GHz 4GB/1TB imac) from Best Buy not Apple. I have been using it and not really seeing a difference in normal day to day or using Photoshop than my pc quad-core. Due to this, I am now arguing with myself for the last 2 weeks that I should have just bought the Quad-Core imac and then I would see a difference between using a DC over a QC (but scared hearing all the 27" screen issues). I am now past the return policy but they said they could refund my money to a gift-card allowing me to use the gift card and order my QC iMac from Best-Buy's site which will have me w/o a mac for 5-7 days (now kicking myself that i didnt buy it from Apple as I could've just did an exchange). This terrifies me!!!
    My questions are as follows:
    1) just using my mac to browse, download large files, & editing photos in Aperature and Photoshop, will I see a big difference if I NOT buy the QC mac, & simply upgrade the RAM to 8GB?
    2) When I upgrade the RAM, is 8GB total the max this imac can upgrade to, or can i have the two empty slots as 4GB each (2 2 4 4)??? Is that ok or not recommended?
    3) For what I explained I use my imac for (downloading, browsing, & graphics) will I notice a difference between having an 8GB/1TB Intel CD2 and the 4GB Quad-Core imac (other than screen size)?
Your help would be greatly appreciated as I am not sure whether to just upgrade the new mac i have RAM and buy whatever Quad_Core or awesomeness Apple releases next year at tax time. ??? I am trying to not buy a new computer next year bc its my husband's turn to get one next year, but he did say he thinks I should stay with the imac I have and hold off to see what Apple releases next in an imac. So confused! Now, I admit, if I could simply walk into Best Buy or Apple tomorrow and exchange for teh QC, then my decision is simple--the QC!!! But being without my imac for 5-7 days is a scarey thought!

Check out this article from Macworld. It has info about the performance differences and a good suite of "real world" application tests:

  • Will I see a difference from my old core 2?

I currently have a core 2 macbook pro 2.3 Mhz
    a few quick questions
    1) is the led screen better than LCD?
    2) Do you think I will notice a speed difference?
I ask these questions because I spilled a beverage on my almost 2 year old macpro
and am thinking about replacing it. It still works although several of the keys are dead
can always replace the keyboard but was thinking of upgrading anyway and on the 17inch is the LED better?

Also, battery life is longer and they run cooler. Plus you get the newfangled three-finger trackpad and a new keyboard layout (no Enter key or numeric keypad).

  • Different i5 processors in MBA and MBPR - Will I notice the difference?

Trying to decide between 13"MBA and 13" MBPR (both will come with 8G and 128 storage).  I notice the i5 in MBA is rated1.4GZ, boost to 2.7Ghz and the i5 in MBPR is 2.6GHZ boost to 3.1 GHZ.  Will I notice a difference?  I am struggling with the purchase decision.  This is my first Mac purchase.  Machine will be used for family including 2 middle schoolers, so used for documents, spreadsheets, presentations, internet, hobby level iMovie and iPhoto.  Machine will largely stay home.
The only other differences I see is the HDMI port on MBPR (can't decide if I would use, but seems like it would be handy if making movies and storing photos) and the display, but not sure I will really see a difference.
Any thoughts?  As configured the price difference is about $160.

The MBP is faster than the MBA, you will notice.
128GB is very little, I would reconsider that.

  • Will I see difference between DVI over VGA monitors?

    hi all,
I have my G4s connected to one VGA LCD monitor via KVM adapter box. They both have video cards with DVI capabilities. Will I see a difference if I were to use a DVI monitor?
    Thanks
    Web dude

    Hi-
Yes, there will be a difference.
LCD monitors are digital, and so is the graphical data produced by the graphics card.
For VGA (analog) the graphics card converts the digital to analog, and the monitor reprocess that back to digital.
There is a loss of quality, lesser or greater varies with equipment.
If you change to DVI connection, you will need a DVI capable KVM that supports the optimal resolution of the display. I say this, because in the case of 1920 x 1200, not all KVMs can go that high.

The HTC hotspot works fine with everything else I connect to it.
Also - ipad will not connect to my HTC via bluetooth. Again, I can connect to everything else with my HTC other than my ipad.
I have to say this is my first venture into Apple products and I have always wanted to get away from my windows based laptop to get a MacBook, the problems I have had (flash player etc) & continue to have (as above) are putting me right off swapping over. I HATE technology that doesn't work and my ipad has been hard work!

I stated my ipad as being an ipad2, but I now think it is a 3??? It was new Jan this year and is the 64gb retina display version.
I really would like to get to the bottom on this problem wit mobile hotspots as it is sitting on my desk next to me now and I cannot get it to connect to my HTC mobile hotspot!!!! It might be taking a flying lesson soon at this rate!!! Grrrrrrr...........

  • Will Wifi-sync on iOS5 start if I have my iPod connected to my car when I pull onto my drive in wifi range?

Will Wifi-sync on iOS5 start if I have my iPod connected to my car when I pull onto my drive in wifi range?

Well iOS 5 helps you sync with your computer wirelessly when connected to a power supply and on wifi.
iOS 4 should allow you to have automatic downloads from your account with iTunes rather than from your computer.
Just go to settings>store and turn on automatic downloads and it will do what you want whether it's plugged in or not as long as you're on wifi.

  • When will Wifi-calling be extended to other 'capable' handsets?

When will WiFi calling be extended to other 'capable' handsets? I have never met a company that operate in such an opaque fashion and seem content to leave their subscribers in the dark. If there is no news on this soon I intend to pursue a premature end to my contract.

I can go to another network that would give me an app for calling and texts. No Wifi calling but at least I would have connectivity when I am in my office which has no EE coverage. EE can't offer me Wifi calling or even a promise of it in the future neither can they offer me an app as an interim measure. Crap really.

  • MBA will not allow me to use both usb ports at the same time.

My MBA will not allow me to use both usb ports at the same time. as soon as i plug the second in the first is disabled. trying to use a modem and printer.

What kind of peripherals are you connecting? Sometimes if an external device is drawing too much power, then it will shut down one of the USB ports. Make a test connecting two usb flash drives, it should work ok.

Need more information to help you, but I am providing some suggestions.  Sorry if you are past these type of basic things.  But didnt really have much to start with and understand your technical level to start with.
Have you got into Settings > Computers > Turned on Home Sharing (Note: You must use the some Apple ID used by the iTunes library on your MAC for them to see one another)
How is your MAC connected to the network vs the 720 ATV2?  Is one WiFi and the other Ethernet?  Have you tried switching the ATV2 to WiFi if Ethernet?
Has the MAC been restarted since this started happening?  Same with your Router and any other networking device being used?  Sometimes an IP conflict can arise in your networking and most consumer networking equipment does not know how to "self heal" without a reboot.
Make sure you have given those things a whirl and share back your results.  Any other information you can provide, such as how you connect to your network from each ATV and MAC.

  • MBA doesn't see external display

    Folks,
This is *really* frustrating.  Last night I tried, for the first time, to use an external display for my MBA.  I have a Thunderbolt-to-HDMI Apple cable I bought for this purpose (the only way to do it on my MBA), and I connected it to the external display via an HDMI cable.  I plugged in the monitor, turned it on, and opened up the MBA (it was in sleep mode) and it was glorious -- full, beautiful color (well, after I adjusted the gamma and brightness/contrast appropriately to calibrate it).
So I went ahead and turned on bluetooth so I could use my BT keyboard and I was able to then close the MBA and work on my Mac just like it was a desktop.  It was the greatest thing since... well, since cheap gas.  I could see that I would be using my MBA even more than I already do.  I put the Mac to sleep and tried to see if it would revive from a mouse movement and it did, with the display working perfectly.  I put it back to sleep again and went to bed.
This morning I tried to revive it with a mouse movement and no-go.  Okay, so I opened it up -- still no life.  Hmmmm, I pressed the power button a while so it would come back on, and it finally did, but no external display.  I read online about getting it to see external displays (something I didn't have to do yesterday) and tried "Detect Display", tried turning it completely off for five minutes and powering back on, tried disconnecting and connecting the cable, turning the display power on and off... nothing.  No matter what I do, I can't get the external display to work again.
What in the #$%@# am I doing wrong?  I can't even think of anything else to try.  Leaving aside the fact that it somehow stopped working in the night during sleep mode, what can I possibly do now to get it going again?

I thought I'd add a couple of things here that might be helpful to others searching for a solution to this or a similar problem.
I happened to leave my MBA turned off for a while but with the external monitor connected.  When it came time to turn it back on I connected it to power (although it was pretty fully charged) because I had been reading this:
    http://gizmodo.com/5938452/a-trick-to-make-using-an-external-monitor-with-your-m acbook-way-better
and in the bottom comments there was a section that read as follows:
"Closed Clamshell Mode is still a function of the OS. Here's how: close the lid of portable, plug into power, monitor, and keyboard/mouse, wake portable by clicking the mouse or hitting a key on the space bar. Important note: portable has to be plugged into power, even if the battery is full."
It was the last bit that seemed to make a connection in my mind that perhaps the big issue here was that I was trying to do things without the power connected, even with the Clamshell open.  In any case, the external monitor came back on and then worked just fine.  So I shut things completely down (power down) and restarted several times and each and every time it worked, and kept working even when I went to Closed Clamshell mode.
So I tried with the Clamshell open but NOT connected to power and I had the same issues -- no display and couldn't get it working properly again until I completely shut down, connected to power, and brought it up again.  I am now of the opinion that, at least in my particular case (with the particular thunderbold to HDMI adapter, Dell monitor, and 2011 MBA) that the power needs to be attached no matter if the battery is full or not. (Note: I realize in the above quoted paragraph the big point is that in closed clamshell mode you need to be connected to power.  Still, it seems to me it also makes a difference in open clamshell as well, at least based on my limited tests).
The MBA may still be faulty -- perhaps it should work otherwise -- but I'm happy with things the way they are now.  I will continue to play with this (I had, in the meantime, ordered both another thunderbolt to hdmi adapter as well as a thunderbolt to DVI adapter just to see if they made a difference -- they will come Wednesday and I'll give them a try to see what difference, if any, they make) but at least at the moment I feel like the key to solving this was to keep it plugged into power (it also may have helped to reset the PRAM because I had made some changes to the LCD display that may have screwed things up.  No matter what, that's still good information to know).

  • Before I buy, will I see the date on photos in sorter?

I'm looking for the right App to make movie / video  files from a photoshow.  I'm interested in iMovie but am concerned that I won't see the date stamp on my photo files like in the iPad photo albums.  I find this very annoying in the Photo app.  You can't sort or anything.  Will I see the date stamp of when the photo was taken if I download a photo to my iPad?  So I can sequence my pictures for a video?
When I say date stamp, I don't mean a the date and time right on the photo.  I just want to know when the photo was taken and be able to sort a group of photos based on date taken.

Photos are sorted by date and time, but the date and time is not shown in the app.
