10.6.8 + Safari 5.1 = freeze

Hi all. My partner has this problem on her MacBook Pro, which is newer than the one I'm running 10.7 on. Opening Safari led to an immediate freeze: no page would load. I reset Safari, I wiped preferences, I emptied the cache. I reinstalled the OS. Safari 5.0 worked fine, but upgrading to 5.1 reproduced the problem.
I'd resent paying to get 10.7 simply to fix this. Is there any fix available to allow her to install 5.1 (and subsequent releases) and keep running 10.6.8?
Thanks,
Aidan

but upgrading to 5.1 reproduced the problem.
Third party Safari add ons are frequently responsible when Safari freezes or crashes.
Troubleshooting help here > Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
I'd resent paying to get 10.7 simply to fix this
Bear in mind, Apple is not responsible for updating third party add ons. The developer is.
The only way to reinstall Safari on Lion is to use Lion Recovery

Safari pinwheels and freezes the entire system.
I've read numerous threads with this Safari pinwheeling theme, but none of the posted solutions I've found work for me.
    The problem:
Safari will almost always on opening, and frequently when filling in forms on websites, start pinwheeling. The whole system then slows down, and then eventually freezes. Even the dock bar freezes. When this happens, I can't even bring up the Force Quit bar. The freezing will often last several minutes, then all of a sudden, all my various previously ignored mouse and key clicks cycle through. When Force Quit finally starts, then everything freezes again. Eventually, Force Quit will show Safari as not responding, and once in a while the system then will start responding, but usually I have to kill Safari.
The problem subsided a little bit on the opening the application problem when I switched my start page from Apple.com to Google.com, thinking that maybe it was just too much graphics crap coming in on the Apple site.
The problem happens on both my Airport and cell modem network connections.
I may have seen this behavior once with Firefox, but haven't been able to reproduce it.
Generally I only have a few things running: Excel, Messenger, Safari.
Things I've tried to fix this:
    Reset Safari
    Clear Safari Cache
Delete Safari folder in the system cache folder
Went into the Energy Saver in Preferences and unchecked, "put disk to sleep when not in use" for both the battery and power adpater settings
    Limit number of tabs open
I'd try restarting Safari occasionally, but the problem usually happens on opening.
I've emptied the trash, and made sure there is ample open disk space (10gb right now).
    Resolved duplicate fonts.
I have no third party apps to affect Safari or networking.
I've reset the machine by unplugging it and holding the power button.
My computer is a MacBookPro 15" with all the latest software and firmware updates and 2gb RAM. This has become so frustrating, it's been very tempting to just throw the laptop at the wall and go back to my Windows laptop...

I'd say the bad blocks were behind the problems you were seeing. Their existence points to either a defective HD, or directory corruption. The latter usually can be repaired by using a Utility such as Disk Warrior, or as you did, reformatting the drive.
Best approach to minimizing directory problems is to do routine maintenance twice a month. Have a look at this MacWorld article for suggestions.
For routine maintenance I use OnyX. There is no charge for the software, but I believe the developer asks for a donation.
It's very easy to use. I run it twice a month. Once it is installed, you would double click on the OnyX icon in your application folder (or drag an icon to your dock for quick access) to open the application. After entering your administrator password, you would select "automation". The panel looks like this:
Select the same items I have checked. The program takes about 5 to 10 minutes to run. Leave your computer alone, that is, don't use it for anything else until OnyX is finished. Once complete, restart the computer and you're good to go.
Lastly, the most effective maintenance is having a full backup of your system on an external hard drive. All machines fail eventually, despite the best maintenance. If you had a hard drive failure without any backup, then you would lose all your information, including documents, images, songs, etc. Not a pretty picture.
For your system, you would purchase either a USB or Firewire Drive for your new Intel Machine. The key here is creating a "clone" backup on the drive, which you back up regularly, or at least once a week. For the backup process I use SuperDuper. Very easy to use. The initial backup takes about 1 to 2 hours. Subsequent backups take 5 to 10 minutes. Total $$$ investment can be anywhere between $100 - $250 depending on the size of your Hard Drive.
Post back if you need any other information relative to your questions here.

  • Safari 6 viewport freezes

safari 6 keeps freezing on me.
the app itself works and i can make new tabs and close the app but the viewport (inside the browser) freezes and i cant click any links or scroll the page im currently viewing. sometimes it also doesnt load the website fully and half the page is blank.
    is this happening with everyone?
    im using mountian lion

Yes - It's happening to me too...
Sorry it took so long to reply, but I'm serious when I say I was typing this in Safari 6, and it froze!!! So I had to switch over to Chrome to complete it... how ironic.
So annoying. I have a crazy fast set up and things like this are frustrating.
Safari 6 on mountain lion is really really nice, until it freezes, and pages only half load, and things don't scroll, and it locks down your computer forcing a restart after waking from sleep...
Back to Chrome I go (and so should you) it has none of these issues... dammit. but if apple fix these issues, I'll be back on Safari.

  • Safari tends to freeze

I am using Safari as my preferred Browser. However, since I installed Tiger 10.4.2 Safari seems to freeze or respond very slowly to command while it spins the color wheel endlessly. I have to force quit the application and change the page to something else, after which it seems to behave normal for a while.
Any suggestion for something I should know?

You may have already tried this.... but here is what worked for my Safari issues:
Install the latest Safari update then -
Clear Safari Cache: Safari -> Empty Cache
Clear Cookies: Safari -> Preferences -> Security - > show cookies - Clear all
(You can also Reset Safari: Safari -> Reset Safari (this will remove everything and reset)
Clear the Java cache: In Finder, open Applications -> Utilities -> Java
There are normally two Java Apps, (you may have one or both): "Java 1.4.2 Plugin Settings.app" and "Java 1.3.1 Plugin Settings.app" . Quit Safari, and Run each one. In Java 1.4.2 you should see a "Cache" tab and or a "Clear" button, in Java 1.3.1 you will see a Cache tab and a "Clear JAR Cache button. Once you clear the Java Caches, open Safari and see if that helps.
An alternate method is to trash the Java cache directory itself - located in:
    ~/Library/Caches/Java Applets/cache
    Hope this helps...

Surfing the web on Safari the screens freezes and then nothing happens? All is updated

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take an action that isn't working the way you expect. Select any lines that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name or email address, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Safari keeps on freezing on my Macbook Pro

    Hi all
In the past 2-3 months Safari keeps on freezing after 5-10mins of use. It works again when I restart my Macbook, but keeps happening.
I've ran a software update, which hasn't done anything.
I'm going to download Firefox this evening to see if that has the same issues.
Can anybody suggest how to fix this problem to save me taking it in anywhere.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. First, disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard, mouse, monitor, and Ethernet, if applicable. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account that has the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, perhaps including wireless networking on certain Macs. If you usually connect to the Internet via WiFi, and it doesn’t work in safe mode, connect using an Ethernet cable. If you can’t do that, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and perform a safe login, as follows: Enter your credentials at the login screen, then hold down the shift key and click the “Log in” button. Keep holding the key until the menu bar appears. In this mode, your login items, among other things, won’t load.
In safe mode, test again. Same problem(s) now?
After testing, reboot (if you booted in safe mode) or log out/log in (if you performed a safe login) as usual.

  • Safari quits or freezes when I input text into a login field

    Hello Everyone,
Heres the problem: Whenever I input text into some login fields (on pages I have been using for a long time w/ no previous problems), the app usually freezes, sometimes it quits. I have scoured the forums for people with the same problem, and have tried everything (reset safari, delete the ~library/preferences/com.apple.safari.plist file, I have followed the advice of an Apple article for determining the problem file, I have tried fixing keychain, I have repaired disk permissions, I have deleted & reinstalled Safari, all to no avail. Safari does work when I log in as administrator.
    Please Help!

  • Safari 8 crash / freeze due to failed HTTPS handshaking

Since last month some networking devices in my office are malfunction. The IT staffs spend weeks diagnosing these devices, but still can't determine the source of problem. So we have to put up with the unstable internet connection for a while. I don't know why, but all the normal HTTP request seemed OK (though slow), while partial of HTTPS connections suffer from extremely long latency (up to several minutes). As an engineer, I understand this situation and I can stand for the slow connection. But the problem is, Safari 8.0 (Yosemite) is completely unusable in this environment.
A typical syndrome is: when I visit some webpages that contain HTTPS resources (Javascripts or images, such as the avatar icon of some forum,) Safari will load only part of the page, and go freeze. Mouse cursor will turn into spinning beach ball and every element on the page is not functional; text can't be selected, form can't be focused, links can't be clicked, and even page rendering is stopped: pictures and texts are cut-off in the half, and the screen will not repaint when scrolling. If there are other tabs opened, switching to other tab will flush the whole tab content into blank, and the original content of those tab will not be repainted either. Every interactive move will get no response, including the attempt to close the stalled tab. Safari will only come back to life after the HTTPS session expires, which would take minutes before it times out. And in some rare case, the stalled HTTPS session will crash the whole web content process of that tab. The tab (or window) will just disappear by itself.
The situation goes really really bad, because every modern web page will utilize some sort of HTTPS resource. Facebook buttons, avatar icons, login forms, they are everywhere. Even stackexchange.com is filled with such elements. Of course the slow connection is not limited to Safari; Google Chrome and even CURL command also suffer from long latency of HTTPS connection. However, Chrome and CURL may go renegotiation during SSL handshaking, and eventually construct connection after a delay. But Safari seems not capable to do this. If HTTPS connection is not established in a few seconds, the session will fail, and it will block all other UI events, until the session expires. I've no idea how Safari 8 deals with TCP connection, but these symptoms remind me the old-school "blocking mode" of socket implementation, which I've never used again after I learned select(), poll() and kqueue.
If there is any tip of fix to mitigate the situation will be appreciated. I do hope some "defaults write" command will tweak the behavior of Safari dealing with HTTPS, or "sudo rm" some outdated database will do the magic. But please save your time and don't advise me to "Clear the History and Web Data". I've already done that, and it's not working at all. I've even setup a new user account and repeated all the test with the new account.

I worked around the issue myself by manually commenting the offending assertions out in src/core/job.c, so this is an upstream bug. I will report it at the systemd bug tracker.

  • Safari 6.1 freezes and then can't connect to the server when I refresh the page

    Hi everyone.
I have a Mid 2010 13" Macbook. It is running the following..
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB
    Software OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)
    Hard Drive: 320GB
Recently Safari has been acting up. Everything will be working fine but then it will freeze and when I switch to another tab that tab will be white, as will all other tabs when I switch to them. When I refresh the page it force refreshes all other pages but on a lot of the pages (Facebook, Twitter, google, Gmail, mostly things with a password I think) it says that it can't make a secure connection to the server. I tried switching to Chrome and the same thing happened and then I switched to the Guest User and the same thing happened.
It has also been telling me that I have no more space on the startup disk but I'm not sure how that can be the case. I currently have 272GB free of a 319GB hard drive so I'm not sure what the problem is here! When I restart the mac everything is fine again but I have noticed it is taking longer for the mac to start up now. I have repaired disk permissions, I have reset Safari and cleared the history. I have downloaded OmniDiskSweeper and it has told me that the highest usage is in Spotify caches and my Gmail folder. So I deleted the Spotify caches and deleted all my emails. I then tried to delete the mail folder in Finder but when I do it just builds itself back up again.
When I used Disk Utility to verify the disk it found no issues.
I tried to shut down and restart it to run the hardware test but it doesn't boot up, it just takes a lot longer to reach the log in screen.
I don't know what else to try! Any help would be welcomed.

    Try this DNS server ..
Open System Preferences > Network > Advanced > DNS
    Click + and type:
    208.67.222.222
Click + again and do the same.
    208.67.220.220
    Click OK.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Safari, mail, etc freezing

Over the last few month I have noticed my 2006 Mac Book Pro, is getting slower and slower and then starts to freeze with the the coloured wheel spinning. To the point of having to erase and reinstalling from the time machine back up. This seems to cure the probelm for a week or so then the coloued wheel reappears and start the whole thing again.
What is happening here? I have the max 2gigs of ram, lots of space on the HD. I have run all the DU and updates and nothing seems to fix it. Is my MBP done?
    Please help!!!
    Rich

Funny, same thing is happening to me.  Running latest Snow Leopard, on my 2010 Mac Mini, 2GB RAM, loads of space on my hard drive.  For the past few months my computer has been constantly freezing, at least once a day, sometimes more, usually when I only have Mail and Safari open.  I started using Safari again after using Google as my browser for almost a year, thinking that was the problem.  No change.  I have deleted the old Preference files for both applications, repaired permissions, etc etc. -- all the usual "fixes."  Would be grateful for any suggestions.

  • Safari causes system freeze during page load

    Description:
I've been trying to figure this one out for a while now (about 2 weeks), without any luck. I've tried reading a couple of threads describing similar problems, but it looks like I've got something else going on here seeing as it affect the entire system. I appreciate any suggestion!
When a window in Safari is open and you're loading a page, it sometimes (almost always) causes a system freeze. Any action performed on any input device within OSX while a page is loading gets delayed by 5-20 seconds. Anything from right-clicking, to opening a new tab in Safari, to navigating to a new folder in Finder.... literally anything. The actual loading of the page is also affected by this. So when I click a link, the page becomes white and the system stalls. After X seconds, the system resumes and the page is displayed fully loaded. Once the page is loaded, everything is back to normal. I can just leave the Safari-window open without anything happening. It's just during the loading of a page.
Using the mouse to move and switch between open windows are the only actions I seem to be able to perform during the system freeze.
When it doesn't cause a system-wide freeze, it will still take forever for any page to load. Which isn't a problem in any other browser and I've never had any speed issues in general on any device.
What I know for sure is that I can solve the problem by closing all open Safari-tabs and windows or closing the app completely, and use Chrome instead. But I do like Safari, so I hope there's another way to fix this.
I should also note that I've made no changes to the system for many weeks now, other than installing whatever updates might have been available on the App Store.
    What I've tried within Safari:
    - program restart
    - reset settings (every option checked)
    - disable and remove extensions (only had one installed, LiveReload for Adobe Brackets)
    - empty cache
    - delete cookies
    What I've tried within OSX:
    - system restart
    - complete OSX-recovery
    - activity monitor (CPU, HDD and RAM always within normal values during all of this)
    - checked HDD (successfull)
    - checked internet-connection (got 50Mbit/s connection, no speed issues, checked on multiple devices)
    - tried other browsers (Chrome (OSX) and IE (Win 7, Parallels) both run smoothly)
    - turned off IPv6 in terminal (based on a suggestion here at the forums)
    - disabled iCloud-sync
    - disabled Dropbox
    - probably a couple of other things i can't remember right now

    So... I finally fixed it.
In addition to the things I mentioned I tried, I also checked if it could be malware-related. It wasnt. I then checked if it was just affecting my user-account or OSX globally. I created a new account and Safari ran perfectly. I therefore assumed it had to be something in my library-folder.
I deleted just about any mention of Safari in the Library-folder (the visible one) and just to be absolutely sure, I deleted the Contents-folder inside Safari.app in the Applications-folder. I then downloaded and installed Safari 7.0.3. Everything runs smooth now.

  • Iso 8.0.2 updated safari slow and freezes

Installed iOS8.0.2 then perfumed a complete reset, Safari still slow and freezes up on search screens?

    Hi, paulsachi.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would recommend going through the steps in the article below.  If the issue persists and your device OS is up to date, I would recommend contacting the developer of the app.

  • 10.5.2 Update and Safari 3.1 Freeze Screen

When 10.5.2 was released, I updated it immediately using the software update link, but unfortunately it freeze my screen using Safari, Yahoo Messenger and other programs (two connection LAN & Dialup - both freeze screen). Below are what I did to the computer trying to install this 10.5.2:
    1. Install 10.5.2 using the software update link... freeze screen!
    2. Reformat, reinstall 10.5, then go to Disk Utility and repair the authorization before updating to 10.5.2 combo that I downloaded (as per the advise of other)... again freeze screen!
    3. Reformat, reinstall 10.5, install 10.5.2 combo and omit the Graphic Update... again freeze screen!
    4. Reformat, reinstall 10.5, install 10.5.1 then install 10.5.2... again freeze screen!
    5. Yesterday, I saw an update of Safari 3.1 and Security Update, but unfortunately I cannot install those two update unless I install 10.5.2. So again, hoping to fix the freeze screen problem, I reformat again and install all the necessary update... again FREEZE SCREEN USING SAFARI... I don't know the other programs because I'm tired of testing this 10.5.2. Why Apple release a Security Update and Safari 3.1 only for 10.5.2?
Well, I think I'll just follow the suggestion of other that stay with stable OS X 10.5.1.
If you have any other solution, I would appreciate.
    Thanks.

  • SAFARI 5 REPEATEDLY FREEZING ON FACEBOOK

    Mac 27 2010 10.6.8, Safari 5.1.9
Guys, I am crashing/freezing with even more frequency LIKE EVERY OTHER DAY. I have tried the following:
    - reinstalled Safari
    - emptied and rest cache
    - downloaded and enabled ClicktoFlash
This only happens when moving cursor over a Facebook page(cursor just freezes up suddenly). I have about 6 tabs open at any one time, but I don't think this could be the issue, and I refresh Safari when the memory gets used up.
This is really  getting to be a big problem in interrupting my work and I have lost documents I was working on in other programs because of it.
    Desperately need a solution!

Try troubleshooting extensions and third party plugins.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.
You can avoid losing documents by backing up your files on a timely basis.

  • Safari 5.1 freezing on lion

Hey guys! I upgraded to lion when it came out, and ever since I've been having problems with safari freezing my computer so that I have to restart it. Anyone else having this problem/have a solution?

Could be the preferences are corrupted ..
Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, move the .plist file to the Trash.
~ (Tilde) character represents your Home folder.
For LIon:   To find the Home folder in OS X Lion, open the Finder, hold the Option key, and choose Go > Library
