10.6.8 slow graphic transitions

I'm using 10.6.8 and everything was fine until this morning. my friend wanted to use my imac this morning and he is not familiar with mac os x at all. and when I was back home and turned on my imac, I saw that dock transitions(hiding) and hot corner transitions (show desktop, show all windows) were working extremely slow.
so I deleted and clean installed the mac os. my mac os cd has the 10.6.7 version. I installed it and then transfered files from my time machine drive, my imac was fast again, running with all my apps and files under 10.6.7. and then I wanted to upgrade to 10.6.8, it's slow again.
when I scroll up and down on safari, that's fine, it's fast. when I run apps, it's fine, they launch fast. I don't know what's wrong with my system.
ps: when I first turned my imac on after my friend used it, I checked mac os x with onyx. it said that my disk needed to be repaired. so I repaired both the disk and the permissions. onyx started saying that disk is okay, but my imac was still slow.
what should I do?

I'm experiencing the exact same issues at our company. It seems that network connectivity and/or user authentication with AD is suffering from a serious problem of some sort.
Besides the increased Login/Unlock times, the thing that's bothering me most is the horribly slow SharePoint intranet site access - that's where I first noticed that something was wrong.
I've been searching the Web all day and this was the only report I could find so far. There's another post here about "Safari/Internet slow response time" but I believe it's a whole different issue - ours seems to be specific to AD-bound machines.
Keep us posted if you find anything else. I'll do the same.

Slow graphic transitions - iMac 2011 Mavericks

Few months ago I switched to Mavericks on my iMac 2011. (Few weeks in S.Leopard, than Lion, and directly to Mavericks)
It seemed all good but I am realizing that graphical transitions (such expose, widgets,... desktop change) are slow.. something like at a low frame rate.
I've also just noticed my iMac series (ending ... DHJW) has problems with the AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB and a replacement program is running.
However, I never experienced graphical problems with previous OS, so my graphical board should be ok.
Permission repair on hd didn't solve the issue..
Can you advice something before trying with a clean install?
additional infos: 12 GB ram, 3.4 GHz i7, 10.9.1 13B42 OS X, 27''.

T520 - 42435gg / Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance with Intel Rapid Storage AHCI Driver

Hi everybody,
I have serious Problems with my 42435gg
Any time I install the Intel Storage AHCI Driver (I've tried plenty of different versions) which is suggested by System Update I experience a horrible Sound stutter and slow Graphic performance in Windows 7 64-Bit.
The funny thing in this case: If the external e-sata port is connected the problems do not occur. If the port is unused again, the stutter begins immediately.
The only thing I can do is using the Windows internal Storage Driver with which I am not able to use my DVD recorder for example.
The device was sent to lenovo for hardware testing with no result. It was sent back without any repairing.
Anybody experience on this?

Did you try the 11.5 RST beta? Load up DPClat and see if DPC conditions are favorable.

Very slow graphics on Windows XP

I've just ontalled Boot Camp and the windows xp professional on my MacBook Pro (mid 2010 2.66 GHz Core i7, 8 GB Ram).
All seems to work vell BUT the graphics in Windows is EXTREMELY slow (unaceptable) when une 100% graphic acceleration and definitively SLOW (just acceptable) when reducing to zero the acceleration.
Now I'm going to install a program (simulator) that needs fast graphics and it refuse to run because it detects a too slow graphics performance of the system.
This one is a new installation of Boot Camp since I've upgraded to a new 750 GB hard disk and I had to reinstall all Windows from scratch; in the previous disk I had no problem with the same Windows and (as far I remember) the same installation.
Is there anyone that can help me? Is there any new Boot Camp version around? I've just upgraded to Mac OS Lion, but it seems that Lion does not have nothing to do.

I would have moved to Windows 7, better support for i7 and of course 64-bit / 8GB, seriously.

And yes, the latest beta. Though with XP I am never 100% certain, and use to be modified drivers such as from Laptop2go had to be used, I think that is less an issue; though one person recently said they had to use very old 18x.xxx driver on their system.
Windows 7 has better driver support today.

2007 17 inch Macbook Pro has slow graphics

After updating to iLife 11, my MBP suddenly has very slow graphics perfomrance! It used to be able to handle 1080p video just fine, NOW IT CAN BARELY HANDLE 720P! Can someone please help me? What can I do?

Ok, if you're on SL, Bootcamp is probably still at v3.x. Lion came with v4.0, but no matter, since the drivers are machine-specific. IIRC, an Early 2011 15" MBP should already have the twin integrated Intel/AMD Radeon GPU setup, with 512MB or so of dedicated VRAM. One issue I can think up as being the problem would be if Win7 got stuck on using just the Intel GPU, which is drastically less capable than the AMD, instead of switching. Since I have not delved in the depths of Windows, would not know how to probe its interaction with the hardware, especifically to ensure that switching between the GPUs is occurring or at least that the faster of the two gets enabled if no autoswitching can take place. Maybe there's a utility out there to check it out?
Also and to be on the safe side, might want to run an Apple Hardware Test to confirm that all is OK on the hardware side: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509

Macbook Slow Graphics Lag

So my Macbook has two problems, like most the mooing, and also worse yet, slow graphics response. Scrolling is very slow and choppy, not smooth. expose is also not smooth, and its very very slow when i'm running software update. I called apple but as usual not much help. Haven't had a chance to take it to a store yet, but i will this week. I wanted to know if this was happening to other people. And this happens when the computer is plugged in, has only safari running, also this computer has 2gigs of ram and a 7200 rpm hd.

First up I'd boot up from your MacBook DVD and then run "Disk Utility" from the "Utilities" menu and get it to "repair disk" and "repair permissions". This will make sure that you are not simply dealing with a bit of directroy corruption or bad permissions. Always worth doing first when problems arise, just so you don't find yourself dealing with problems on top of problems.
Once you've done this, though, from your description its sounds as if you are having networking issues of some kind. How are you connecting to the net? ADSL? Cable? Phone? Wireless or wired?
Whatever method you are using it may be worth heading to the "Network" System Preferences panel , choosing "Network Port Configuration" from the "Show" drop down menu (its right at the bottom of the list there), and making sure that whatever method you are using is at the top of the list which then appears. If it isn't, drag it there and turn off any of the networking options that you don't actually use. Sometimes network problems can manifest themselves in strange ways, if, for example, the computer is trying to sync an iDisk, or access a nonb-existent server.
You might also want to start up "Activity Monitor" (its in your Utilities folder), head to the window called "Activity Monitor", and check on CPU usage when "Active Processes" is selected in the upper dropdown box. Its possible that a particular background process is hogging processor time (some virus checkers are renowned for this but other things can be implicated too. Drivers for some older Canon printers were causing headaches like this a little while back on some Macs, for example)
Finally check with "System profiler" and make sure both the RAM sticks are actually registering as installed. Its a mighty fine line between them pushing them in far enough , and not doing so! If one isn't fully slotted home it will still run on the other, but graphics processes will be slowed significantly because of the absence of matching pairs.

Mac mini VPN headless, slow graphics performance when no monitor plugged in

I am using a Mac mini, headless, with no monitor, keyboard or mouse, via VPN from a Windows machine over a LAN. Everything works fine and setting everything up was a breeze. However, something very odd I noticed was that if my Mac mini does not have a monitor plugged in to its video output, the rendering of the graphics over the VPN is very slow. It is most noticable when hovering over the dock and activating the animations etc, though it is noticable all the time. It's so bad that it would be IMPOSSIBLE to watch a video clip or simple animation. It's as though frames are being dropped. Now, this can be immediately fixed if a monitor is plugged into the Mac mini and turned on, and the VPN to the Mac mini from my Windows machine works flawlessly and the graphics are rendered perfectly, with little to no delay or frame skipping.
I have a hunch that the Mac could be disabling some kind of graphics acceleration when the monitor is not plugged in, but I am not a Mac expert by far, this is my first Mac experience. It was purchased solely for the VPN and headless use, so if I can't get it working properly, it's a waste.
Note, I have tried several VPN client/viewer combinations and they do not change the situation.

Also, when I try to use the remote with the Mac mini (pressing the menu button), over VPN with no monitor attached to the machine, I simply get a white blank screen until I press the menu button again.

I must have been HALF ASLEEP when I wrote this.

YOSEMITE SLOW, GRAPHIC PROBLEM & MORE..

I have problem with everything in my mac. Safari is slow and lags. I need to w8 much time to open my apps like; iTunes, Steam, App store, finder and more. I have graphic problems, fps prob, yosemite need a lot of CPU and memory. Someone has the same problem? Need 7-10 min to turn on my mac. Will be resolved with an update? Sorry for my bad english, I'm italian.

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Slow graphics performance - login screen, launchpad, full screen video all stutter

Since installing Mavericks, I've found that several system animations are slow/stutter. This is on a 2012 MacBook Air with maxed out hardware specs so its not b/c I'm running an old system.
Some examples:
- When booting up, right before I reach the login screen, the display quickly flashes blue. This leads me to believe something funky is going on with my graphics card/drivers
- The login animation, where you click your username and it floats to the middle of the screen so you can type in your password, is very jerky, taking 2+ seconds to complete. Previously it had been fast and smooth
- When using Launchpad, expanding folders often takes several seconds. The folder will start to expand, freeze, and then finally finish. This tends to be more of a problem for folders with 1 row of icons. Large folders oddly seem to expand ok / smoothly
- Watching full screen video in iTunes causes the audio to stutter (the video playback is still smooth). If I make the window smaller, audio and video playback are smooth again
Is anyone else experiencing these kinds of graphics issues? Any idea whats going on or how to fix?

Quit Chrome and see whether there's any change. If not, see below.
Step 1
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, andIdle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

Slow Graphics in Reports 10g?

we are currently building a massprinting engine based on the oracle 10 Reports server.
Now we have the following problem:
Building a normal report without any graphics on it takes under normal conditions not more than 2 seconds.
Based on the same report, we added a graphic on it. a simple pie chart.
NOW IT TAKES 20 seconds to generate that report. This is an impossible time for MASSPRINTING. Now it takes 15 days for our planned massprinting (or better massreporting).
Any ideas or experiences about that problem????

Hi,
It is difficult to pin-point the problem without looking at the report and your environment. As I said, it may depend on how many "data points" are you trying to plot on the graph. For example, if there are 1,000 data points (slices in your pie chart), the performance will be slow.
One may need to test the performance on other output formats like HTML, RTF, etc. Then one can say whether this is an engine formatting problem, data fetching problem or PDF outupt problem.
What I would suggest is that you open a Service Request with Oracle Support, who can then get more insight into the problem and advise you accordingly.

Slow Graphics after update

I just installed a bunch of updates for my relatively new macbook pro (end of 2009) and found that afterwards the computer's graphics became quite jerky (mainly the screen saver and expose - four finger swiping) while iPhoto shows all my pictures as icons but cannot display them individually or in a slideshow. I've tried copying the photos to my desktop and opening them in preview but I just get a white blank space - I cannot even open images downloaded from the internet. However - I can still access and display these images as my desktop background. So I'm assuming it must be some problem associated with the programs - although that doesn't explain the slow screen saver...
Is there a way to uninstall software updates (e.g. iPhoto version 8.1.2 or 8.1.1)?
There is another possible alternative for the problem:
I was removing a program at the end of its trial period and was looking through system files to attempt to remove any leftover files. The software company is named "Gforce" so, thinking that any files related to that should be unnecessary, I deleted a few files named "Gforce..etc." in "System/Library/Extensions"
Does anybody know if these were actually related to something else entirely? Does anybody without Gforce software on their Mac have these files?
Any tips?

Slow/jerky transitions after upgrading to Snow Leopard

Hi,
I've just built a short iMovie and have noticed that my transitions (cross dissolve and cube) are very slow / jerky / not smooth after upgrading to Snow Leopard. Any one else having this problem?

Very slow graphics when using AMD Radeon HD 6490M with Yosemite

I'm using a 15" MacBook Pro early 2011. When I switch to the GPU using gfxCardStatus (or because an app requires it), all graphics become very slow: window dragging, window miniaturize animation, moving the mouse in the menubar etc. 3D view in Maps.app is very slow. All is fine when using the integrated Intel HD 3000. I did not have this problem with Yosemite Developer Previews (I did not install the GMs), nor with Mavericks.
I tried using AMD kext from the DP, but things are worst (I suppose the kext are not loaded at all because the signature does not match).

Hi. I tried to do that with the same download package on my Pavilion DV6 CTO Quad edition and it fails to install the driver because of a conflict with the C++ Redistributable 2010 package build into the installer. Does anyone know if HP is going to update the switchable graphic drivers for Windows 8? They better!

Octo 3.2ghz with 8800GT with dual 30s - Incredibly slow graphics?

I just upgraded from an octo 3.0ghz ati1900 to the new 3.2ghz early 2008 model with an 8800gt video card with dual 30" cinema displays. This should be the dream rig, but under leopard 10.5.2 with graphics update, the UI is choppy and slow. I never had this problem on my old machine with the radeon, and I can't believe that this machine with it's better video card would perform worse.
I just ran xbench and the graphics portion of the results are as follows:
Quarts Graphics Test 68.19
OpenGL Grpahics test 208.64
User Interface Test 8.97
8.97!!! Surely this can't be right??? Anyone else having this problem? Do I have a dud of a card?

We've been scratching our heads and figure they just haven't had any time at all to get a decent driver that really is written for 10.5.2 and 8800 yet.
I remember waiting for some decent drivers and how long it took ATI to gets its driver act together.
Reminds me of the complaints against Nvidia for Vista and how their 12/07 drivers helped. At this point, it seems the Radeon drivers are slightly better, but the Graphics 1.0 update has some good/excellent, and some not so good side effects.

Snow Leopard running slow graphics after reinstallation

Hey everyone,
I have a very strange question. I've been using my Snow Leopard without any problems for quite some time, but a few days ago I decided it was time for a clean install. I installed the Snow Leopard without any problem, used Software Update to update to the latest version, and than I started noticing some graphic problems:
1. Slow UI animations (i.e opening Applications Folder, Minimizing Using Gene Effect, etc.)
2. QuickTime slowness - low fps when I tried playing a movie
3. Adobe Flash problems - when I installed the latest version, Safari seemed to crash by the first sight of Flash on any site. I reinstalled since then and the pre-installed version seems to work
4. In Desktop and Screensaver Preferences I am missing the Translucent Menu Bar option
5. In System Profiler, under Display I have VRAM (Total): 32 MB
It somewhat reminds of the problem described here:

Only that the resolution is to reinstall, which I did several times with the same DVD I had no problems with before, and nothing seemed to help.
Any ideas how to resolve those problems (well I think they are all related) are appreciated since it is rendering my Snow Leopard pretty much unusable.
