10.6.8 Update Hangs

I just updated to 10.6.8 and now our original MacBook Air hangs on boot with a spinning ball. Safe mode also hangs with a spinning ball. I can bring up the drive select for boot menu. Any ideas on how to resolve?
Thanks, Gary

I also experienced dodgy behaviour after installing 10.6.8. It froze, I reboted and the harddrive got corrupted and filesystem couldn't be repaired so I had to reinstall snow leopard.
Mainly triggered by safari being overloaded the computer freezes. It starts with safari becoming unresponsive. When right clicking safari icon to fore quit the rest of the computer becomes unresponsive. I wait 1-2 min and the computer is manuverable again.
According to disk utility my hdd is fine but since the problem persists after reinstalling OS X I'm becoming worried.
All I can see is that either there is something wrong with 10.6.8 or my hdd is going down. Anyone got a clue?

  • 27" imac yosemite update hangs. Required power cycle and safe boot to get the update going. Now all OS X update do the same.

    27" iMac Yosemite update hangs.
The original upgrade to Yosemite (10.10) took almost a full day! The computer hung during one of the reboots and just showed a blank grey screen, no apple logo, no progress bar, nothing. I left it like that for about an hour thinking it might be working in the dark... Eventually I had to power cycle. Disconnected power at the wall outlet for about 5 minutes, then reconnected and tried to start. After about 20 minutes, got to the same point, grey screen:no action, again waited at least an hour.
Then I did a safe boot. System came up OK in safe mode to the log in screen. As soon as I logged in, it proceeded with the interrupted update, which ran to completion. Yay!
Now, every update to Yosemite that arrives gives men the same grief!
To add some more, the "Pro Video Formats 2.0.1" update has installed about 4 times, and is asking to be installed again? There's no indication that it fails the update so whats going on?

I saw the set hibernet mode to 0 trick and it failed.  Guess I can try 3 because reinstalling OS X did nothing but cost me another few hours and a little faith in Apple.  Getting annoyed as I see how many people complain of the identical issue and the fixes are variable and random.  Suggests to me that it is a major design flaw in the hardware and Apple got too cute with the just works idea and didn't put a damned power button on the display so there is no manual way to do it and no 'insert a pin here' type trick to reset the thing.
Asking for a refund tomorrow.  Past the 14 days so maybe they'll say no but if so then every time this happens I will swap it out.  At least then I know it is a three hour fix and as I was working on this for hours today it occurred to me that if the trick is to do 57 different things and maybe one will work then that is not why I made the switch to Apple.  I could plug everything in on my PC and it all 'just worked'.
Really poor customer service - the support folks are very nice and I am sure they know that this is a systemic issue but aren't allowed to say so.  Feeling pretty stupid for going on faith right about now.

  • Update hangs

    Hi all,
I'm using Oralce 8.1.7.4 and I have a problem with this UPDATE statement:
    SQL> update pti_opere
    set utente_upd = 'admin'
    where cod_azienda = 1 AND numero_opera = 63 AND anno_triennio = 2007
    The update hangs
    Instead:
    SQL> update pti_opere
    set utente_upd = 'admin'
    where cod_azienda = 1 AND numero_opera = 51 and anno_triennio = 2002;
    1 rows Updated

    What could be the issue?
    Any advice will be appreciated.
    Kind Regards

First thing that came to my mind: What if someone locks the record you're trying to update?
Try a SELECT ... FOR UPDATE NOWAIT statement to check if that's the case.

  • I upgraded to Lion and now Safari doesn't work and the updater hangs so I can't install the updates. Can anyone help me with this?

I upgraded to Lion and now Safari hangs up and the updater hangs up so I can't install the update. Can anyone help?

    Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • TS1702 App Update Hangs, Never Completes

I've had a couple of instances where an update to an app on my iPad 2 is available, and I've selected to update that app. Then, during the process of updating, the update hangs, perpetually in either "loading" or "installing". When this occurs, the app cannot be used, updated, or deleted. Syncing doesn't seem to fix this, nor does removing the app in iTunes and then syncing, and turning the iPad off and then back on doesn't do anything either. Suggestions? Thanks!

No joy, unfortunately. I attempted this mulitple times, both prior to and after syncing, and with the app removed via iTunes and then syncing. It still shows up on the iPad (and in iTunes as dimmed, with a progress bar (still iOS 6)), and says "installing" in the App Store; and when pressed and held so that it wiggles, there is no "X" that allows it to be deleted. So am running out of ideas. Any ideas at all are appreciated and will be tried! Thanks.

  • Joined UPDATE hangs

I am trying to do an update that looks like this:
UPDATE FactTable a SET (City) =
    (SELECT City FROM
    CityTable b WHERE
    (a.DateTimeField - b.DateTimeField) * 24 * 3600 < 900 AND
    (a.DateTimeField - b.DateTimeField) * 24 * 3600 >= 0 AND b.CallsAnswered <> 0 AND a.City <> b.City AND a.CityRep = b.CityRep)
WHERE a.Application = 'MainApp' AND a.DateTimeField IS NOT NULL
AND a.Reporting_ID NOT IN (SELECT Reporting_ID FROM temp_ExcludeTable) AND EXISTS
    (SELECT 1 FROM
    CityTable b WHERE (a.DateTimeField - b.DateTimeField) * 24 * 3600 < 900 AND
    (a.DateTimeField - b.DateTimeField) * 24 * 3600 >= 0 AND b.CallsAnswered <> 0 AND a.City <> b.City AND a.CityRep = b.CityRep);
This update hangs for hours in SQL Plus and never completes.
There are 680,000 records in the "FactTable" and 2.8 million in the "CityTable". The "ExcludeTable" has only 400 records. This is an unusual one time fix of some records and the CityRep field is not indexed. The FactTable.Reporting_ID field is indexed and unique.
Any idea what might be holding it up? I am guessing that it is the "NOT IN" part where I look up some IDs I don't want to update that I have saved in the exclude table. Is there a better way to do this, or is this likely the problem?
Hope that is enough info, thanks,
    Kayda

Check your explain plan, and may be post here. You may find that the "(SELECT City FROM CityTable b WHERE..." is being executed once for each row in the FactTable.
Could also be blocked by another update. A query something like this will reveal that.
    select sa.username as blocker,
           a.sid,
           ' is blocking ',
           sb.username as blockee,
           b.sid,
           o.name as object_name
      from v$lock a,
           v$lock b,
           v$session sa,
           v$session sb,
           sys.obj$   o
    where b.request > 0
       and a.block   = 1
       and a.id1   = b.id1
       and a.id2   = b.id2
       and sb.sid  = b.sid
       and sa.sid  = a.sid
       and sb.row_wait_obj# = o.obj#(+)

  • PI 7.11 sp5 post install steps - SLD update hangs in IE browser

    Hello gurus,
This is my first shot at installing PI ever.  We decided to go with PI 7.1 EHP1 and SP5.  I think the latest may be SP6.
At any rate, we're doing this on AIX 6.1 and Oracle 10.2.0.4.
I followed the install Guide exactly.  Did the sapinst, oracle and patch. Next, I manually updated the KERNEL, IGS , JVM, Then I updated SPAM, SAP_BASIS, then all the other abap components.  Then did JSPM and all those components.  Everything matches SP5 for PI 7.11
    https://websmp204.sap-ag.de/maintenanceNWPI71
    SAP_ABA     711     0005     SAPKA71105
    SAP_BASIS     711     0005     SAPKB71105
    PI_BASIS     711     0005     SAPK-71105INPIBASIS
    ST-PI     2008_1_710     0003     SAPKITLRE3
    SAP_BW     711     0005     SAPKW71105
    ST-A/PI     01M_BCO710     0001     SAPKITAB8F
Now I'm doing the post install steps that are in the instguide.  THere are tons of steps, but let me go over the big ones and where I'm having a problem:
    READ ALL THESE NOTES:
Note 1309239 - Configuration Wizard: PI NetWeaver initial setup
Note 1286149 - Configuration Wizard: PI Self Test for NetWeaver
Note 1107808 - Collective Note: Configuration Wizard 7.1
Note 1286428 - Configuration Wizard: PI Wizard Templates overview
Note 1115280 - PI CTC: Running SAP NW for PI in a different client
At this point, based on being at PI 7.11 and SP5, I did the client copy.  from 000 SAP_UCUS to my new 400 client.  Then I did 001 SAP_USER to my new 400 client.
Then I followed the steps to link the java UME from 001 to 400.  No problem after restarted SAP, it goes to 400.
Now, the next step as I see it is to run the initial config wizard out of NWA.  I did that, no errors.
My problem is when I get to updating the SLD.  I started at cimsap 1.5.42 and CRDelta 5.0....
I updated cimsap to the cimsap51509_1-20005942.zip which took me to 1.6.9
Next, I tried to import CRDelta51509_1-20005942.ZIP.  I "browse" to find it during the import, but when I click the "IMPORT" button, my browser hangs...
I don't even get to the next page where it would be one more "warning/info" before I could really start the import.
I didn't find anything in the work directory or the cluster/server0/log directory.
I search all through SDN/OSS but could not find anyone who had this problem.
Where did I mess up?  Are there other config wizards I should have run before I tried to update the SLD?
    --NICK

    Hey Caio,
Thanks for the response but it doesn't actually answer my question.  But to that point, for a "basic" PI post install, which of the NWA config tasks would you run other than the "initial config" ?  And would you run them BEFORE you updated the SLD content (cimsap/CRDelta) ?
NW: PI - AS ABAP (Basic Configuration for Idoc, Proxy): Maintain
PI Adapter Engine in JPR Mode
    PI Demo Client
    PI Full Qualified Host Name
    PI Self Test for NetWeaver
    PI SLD Self Registration
Specifically, I did the SAPINST - ABAP/JAVA patches - Client copy - and THEN the initial config wizard (Setup a new local SLD, ).  Also, during the initial config, I clicked the box marked "This SLD will be used as a name server for development" and my PI server hostname was already in the box  marked "object server name".  This config took about 30 minutes.  I didn't see any errors or warnings.  although I didn't view the log.  I did go into Java JEE services and Filter for Services with name "XPI".  All were green.
THEN I tried to update the SLD content.
    any thoughts appreciated.

  • ThinkVantage System Update 5.02 problem -- System Update hangs or freezes when installing KB updates

Often after installing a KB update, System Update will restart the computer and then resume processing to install the next downloaded KB update.  However, after restarting, it always freezes or hangs part way through the next KB install.  After waiting 5 or 10 minutes, I click on "cancel."   System Update acknowledges cancellation but nothing happens, and when I eventually give up and select "End task" in Windows Task Manager, I am informed that "This program is not responding."
Clearly this is a bug, perhaps arising from an license consent dialog box that fails to pop-up.  I have resorted to downloading and installing these KB updates one-by-one after a clean install of Windows 7 64 bit on my T400 model 2764CTO.    Service Pack 1 is installed and Microsoft.NET Framework 3.51, which satisfies Lenovo's requirements.  I am running BIOS 3.11 and plan to update it, but would like to solve this problem first, as I would hate to experience a freeze during a BIOS update!
Anyone else having this problem, or any solutions?

DID you get the machine from someonelse, outside of  Lenovo? DID you upgrade the original o/s?
    what o/s?
    ==
KB are offered by microsoft, not Lenovo/su.  Under a rare condition, SU will offer as KB.  A known instance, where microsoft offers HOTFIX, but not for monthly update distribution.  Lenovo has their version of this KB. Probably this HOTFIX fixes a problem in Lenovo land driver that needs the hotfix.
I am amazed at how many KB fixes show up for your machine!!!
    ==
Clearly this is a bug, perhaps arising from an license consent dialog box that fails to pop-up. << assumption, please docment.<<<
Always update your BIOS 1st, the Net frame (v4?). Then try the update land.
    ===
As I would hate to experience a freeze during a BIOS update
Dont BIOS update during a rain storm. or power fauilure.  Always use a ISO (cd) version of this.  Download/burn this version  in case.  Then use the other version, Update from windows. (you now have a backup).
Please research your hardware install guide, as too how to RESET BIOS eeprom.  Get tweezers, change the jump prom clip. BIOS flash from 0. Jump prom clip back.   Is this scary, yesl jumper is on mother board.
    so
    1 3 5
    2 4 6
Plastic jumper is 34 56. Change to 1234, and you reload a bios from blank. You can enter UUID, serial number and fun stuff.
Do not loose the plastic jumper. Turn the a/c off. Have reading glasses.  But this is the solution to what if BIOS update freezes.  Also have a ISO backup of the previous  release  of BIOS on CD.

  • Software update hangs

I have a 21.5 inch Intel iMac mid 2011 and all has been working perfectly since November 2011 when I bought it.
The problem I am having is that when using the software update application found under the appleysumbol on the upper bar, the application says 'checking for new software' and hangs/freezes at what I would call around 20%. I have left the application running for several hours and the bar hasn't moved an inch.
I have tried using both Wi-Fi and ethernet connections to run the software update and neither have helped.
I have also tried several options I have found on some apple forums, including deleting software update caches and using 'Onyx' to delete software update cache and download cache.
As well as this I downloaded an installed the OS X Update Combo 10.7.3 and reset my system, along with verifying and repairing disk permissions. None of this helped.
Could anyone please advise on some way to sort this out as I don't particularly want to install all future updates manually
    Thanks

    Hi,
27" Intel Mac Running Lion with 8GB Ram.
Having same kind of problems after dowloading 10.7.3
Update would see the download for IPhoto 9.2.2 and then would try to get it, but when the progress bar came up nothing would happen. After a while a message came up saying unable to connect to Server, decided to manually download and Install, had to do do the same for Aperture 3.2.3, Safari 5.1.4 and the Digital Camera RAW Compatability Update 3.10.
Now the System is up to date when I try Software udate again it hangs around for ages until it tells me my Software is up to Date.
Have read an Article on the Net that in Mountain Lion you will have to download Software updates from the App store so Everything is one place, just wondering if these Problems we are having is the Precursor to that being implemented.
    Regards.

  • Software update hangs after upgrading to Lion

Just recently upgraded to Lion, mostly without any glitches but upon starting up iTunes I was presented with a dialog box indicating that the version of iTunes was "too new" (I think) and suggested I used Software Update to install a Lion compatible one. So I did. Went to Software Update and clicked on "Check Now" and waited. Task bar moved from left to right to indicate activity and progress but then it stopped at about 4/5 of the way to completion. And that's where it stayed! Canceled and tried again but same outcome. Rebooted and tried again, same outcome. Downloaded and installed the Lion friendly version of iTunes which installed ok, tried Software Update. Same outcome. Anybody out there have the same problem? A solution? Would be great to here from anyone who can help.

Me too. I'm running a mid-2010 Mac Mini with 8GB RAM.
The first couple of times when I tried using the Software Update app, I coudn't get the download to begin; after I clicked the Agree button, the dialog box closed, but the download never started. The Software Update app was still running, just not doing anything. I'd close the app and tray again with the same results.
Today I tried and the download did download and started to install. When it reach the 'Registering components' stage near the end, it appeared to hang at around 98% complete.
Because I was doing onther stuff on my computer, I let it sit there for about 40 minutes. Then, all of a sudden, it finished the install. I've opened iTunes and the 'About' box tells me I'm running iTunes 10 .4 (80) 64-bit.
So, try again and be patient.

  • Boot Camp update hanging on iSight

    Hi,
I've been trying to install Boot Camp 2.1, and when done via Apple Update, it just hangs forever in the middle of installation. Downloading the patch file itself and trying to install that, it hangs at the point where it tries to install drivers for 'Apple Built-in iSight'. I'm on a Mac Pro, and I don't have an iSight attached. I've tried everything I can think of, but it just never gets past this point. I've left it sitting for hours, and nothing happens until I eventually force quit the updater.
    Anyone got any ideas?
    Thanks!
    Jackalton

Same for me. No idea what to do about it..
    Anybody solved that yet?
