So is it time to reinstall software?

If you put the software install dvd in you should be able to boot to it and at least try to run a repair disk or repair permissions. You could also try and boot to the AHT apple hardware test cd.
I would not reinstall just yet.

HT1338 Mini mac Apple TV screen jumping problem

I switched on my mini mac and Apple TV today to find they both seem to have the same jumping split screen problem. I have tried my ps3 into the same sockets and the TV seems fine is this an apple issue. Both my apple equipment were working fine two days ago when I last used it

So when it works in Safe mode using DVI, did you mean the signal is still passing through the amp/receiver that you plan on using? If that is the case, then I have a suggestion. Boot safe again in the same manner and when the boot completes and the TV comes up in 1024 x 768 as it does, go into Displays preferences and switch it to the desired resolution. Hopefully on doing so there will still be a usable image on the TV. If yes, then reboot normally. The last selection made under Safe mode should now persist through a normal restart and should stay that way ever after until you make a different selection again in Displays preferences.

If you do not touch the screen within the lock screen time period it will do this. If this is happening while you are actively touching the screen or other action then:

Today, Sept 26, 2011: I finally decided to download version 6. I got a message stating my java script was not compatible with this version. It did a search and said it could not find an update. I need jave script. What now??

Using Window XP Pro with service pack 3 and all the updates. I uninstalled version 6 and am now back to version 4. 4 gig ram and over a hundred gigs of storage. Not using Nortons or McAfee. Checking my settings, I find java is enabled, but still get "java not installed" on many sites. I have reverted to version 4, so I can only load the troubleshooting info from there.

Safari Update Sending my MBP into Spasms?!

I have a latest gen Macbook Pro. I installed the latest Safari Security update (3.1.1 I believe) and rebooted the system before starting to work this morning. On reboot it started behaving erratically. I don't know if all of these symptoms are related or if they were caused by the update but non of them happened until after it was installed.
1. iTunes would suddenly stop playing over my USB audio adapter. Sometimes switching it back between USB and built-in audio fixed the issue the first couple of times then it didn't. Then nothing would play. Then no sound at all. Then the other accounts on the computer started having trouble.I tried rebooting and then it worked again for a about three minutes. I started just using the built-in output and it seems to be working for now.
2. The Finder started crashing. And then crashing. And crashing. I literally watched it pick up speed until it was crashing and relaunching at full clip. To the credit of OSX I could continue to use certain programs (firefox) while the rest of Rome burned around me.
3. When I quit Safari (which had seemed to be going slow but working fine) the finder magically stopped its crash and rebirth cycle.
4. System Preferences is also now crashing erratically but I can't pinpoint a repeatable set of actions that is causing that.
Am I the only one with bizarre signs of instability after the update? Any insight? The computer is still under warranty but I'd rather not waste a(nother) morning by dragging it into the Apple Store. Avoiding Safari and USB audio seems to make the computer stable enough to work but this hardly seems like a solution since my setup worked fine yesterday!

Did you repair permissions after the update? If not, try that and see if it helps.
Can only report that I have not had any of these issues with my MBP after the Safari update.

Ok, ready to send my mac into wireless internet zone

Hello everyone! I have a Power Mac G4 Digital Audio and would like to know some specifics between the original Airport Card and Airport Extreme. I know that the lower end Mac G4's don't support the new Airport Extreme card, however I was wondering if there is an alternative card that I can use to achieve lightning fast internet speeds through wireless. Is there a G or N based card out there, and is it possible to make use of Airport Extreme through 3rd party cards?

Well you really don't want the original Airport card if you have anything Apple Airport Extreme. The original Airport cards transmits in either "A" or "B" and the Extreme is "G" with the third + generation Extreme's being "N" upgradeable. For argument sakes "A" transmits at 1Mbs, "B" being 10Mbs, "G" being 50Mbs and "N" is like 100+Mbs. If you have a "B" card in a "G" network your network will reduce DOWN to B standards. I'm not sure if the third gen Extremes still downgrade or not. If all you are going to do in surf the internet then no problem but any large file transfers would take a hit not to mention you have a Yugo trying to keep up with Mercedes. You paid the bucks to have Extreme why not keep it that way.
There are plenty of third party PCI or Cardbus cards that you can get for the wireless system you are using and probably cost less then the original Airport cards.
For my TiBook i got the Buffalo WLI-CB-AG54 for almost half the price of the original Airport card. No drivers just plug and play, and backward compatible to "A" & "B". The only difference is the drop down menu shows "B" instead of "G" but it does transmits at "G", and I was told that would happen before I bought the card. I was thinking on getting a PCI card for my towers but they are inside desks and to i'm lazy to redo everything. They do make wireless cards that have a lenght of cable to move the ant. where you need it.

Mac Mini stuck on grey screen, what to do?

A friend of me has got a Mac Mini (Late 2005) with some problems. She was looking at a Powerpoint presentation, but in the end it froze (spinning wheel). Then he turned off the machine, rebooted it, but it would display nothing then the grey screen and nothing but that.
From a distance, I tried her to boot into the boot disk screen (the screen did appear, but with no disks inside). After inserting Install Disc 1, it did not appear either, the drive was making some noise though, but even after the noise stopped, no drive appeared).
After a reboot, the machine still wouldn't reboot, nor boot from the drive (with C), nor start the Hardware Test (with D), nor eject. After a very long wait it would only display the icon with the folder and the MacOS icon.
So... what are the options:
1. I could still try to get the data via Disk Mode, but if it fails, do I take a risk (there are no backups)?
2. Should I still try to zap the PRAM or any other clues?
3. Or should I directly take it to an AASP and what should I expect?

- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer

No "sign in" option shown on updated home screen, what now ?

Recent microsoft updates stopped Firefox on my computer,(error 404) but I managed to find a way to update it, but I now have a firefox screen with google as my search engine, but there is no place on the home screen that allows me to sign in to my google account.
How do I resolve this, please.
Basic instructions would be appreciated, as I am not very computer savvy.

Maybe it's Firefox's built-in home page? On that page, the address bar doesn't show an address, just the phrase ''Search or enter address''. Although the page shows a search box linked to Google, it isn't a Google page.
If you go to Google's home page and it has the controls you want, you can make that your home page. These articles have more information on how:

Run the Apple hardware test to see if it can identify an obvious hardware issue. Find your original gray-faced OS X disks. Insert the one that says 'AHT Version x.x' in small print on the label, and reboot holding the alt/option key. Choose the Apple hardware test, and when prompted, choose the extended test. If you have either of the TechTool programs, they can do similar testing. Does that point out any errors?

This is for mountain lion but I have just tried it with Mavericks and it seems to work, I think it is option number 2 for French using the terminal command, you should not need to reinstall.
