10.6.8 wake problem

I still haven't upgraded to 10.6.8 yet because of the problem I've had in the past with my 27" iMac not waking from sleep (I have one partition with 10.6.8 on it that I continue to test to see if any advice will fix it).
Currently I'm still using 10.6.7 though I have had Lion for a long time but choose not to use it (won't bother you with the details).
So my question is... has anyone figured out what is causing the problem for the system not waking from sleep?
I realize that this might have multiple causes... but is there perhaps a cause that has been discovered recently (1-2 months) that may be the major factor?
I've done searches to resolve this, but unfortunately have not come up with one that works for me.
The real PITA is that every time I apply a different 'fix'... it can take hours sometimes before the problem occurs again.
Very strange.
I have tried both putting my 10.6.8 system to sleep manually and waiting extended periods of time before attempting to awaken it, and have set the system in System Preferences to automatically go to sleep after a short period of time and then attempting to awaken it after different sleep durations.
But the real PITA is that it is inconsistent in its occurrence... otherwise I would have probably have been able to figure it out since 10.6.8 has been out for so long.
I'm not a newbie so I should be able to understand any advice you give me, but please don't advise me to simply move to Lion. I have my reasons why I haven't done this.
Thanks for any help.
Ron

Since posting the above... since no one has replied... I've done an extensive search for a fix on this forum and see that there is none.
I guess that's a way for Apple to force everyone to move to Lion.
Lots of Appleseeders have complained about not wanting to move to Lion (well before Lion was released) because of numerous glitches (SPODS, inability to disable Resume, no "Save As", etc., etc.
Well... I guess Apple figures this is one way to make most people accept Lion.
And before you off-handedly discount the above... ask yourself this... Do you think for a moment that if Lion had not been released Apple would not have fixed the bug that is being reported by so many of its users by now?
No way.
The 'accepted' solution now is "just 'upgrade' to Lion."
Love the Mac and I've been using it professionally for well over a decade... but it's things like this that makes it look like MS.

  • SLEEP/WAKE PROBLEM on my Macbook Pro 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

    Greetings!
I love APPLE. So APPLE, please do try to help me out here...
The first problem I encountered was a faded translucent bluish/grayish rectangular line stretching from top to bottom suddenly showing up. I've shown this to our local APPLE technician and my LCD was replaced. Nice job here APPLE!
Now for the latest problem occurring as I'm writing this post. When I have my laptop fall into sleep, for say at least 5 minutes, and attempt to wake it up.. the user interface doesn't show up. The screen remains black and that pressing any key on the keyboard or clicking the mouse will automatically restart the laptop always (I do hope my internal hard disk won't be damaged from this reoccurring dilemma of mine). I've observed that this current problem started after my LCD was replaced.
Does anybody have the same problem as I have? If so, please do give me possible solutions for this? I've already talked with our local APPLE technician and told me that there might be some problems with the motherboard inside that may opening the laptop might be necessary.
Still... No worries APPLE (as of yet), I still love it even though it's my first time using such a wonderful invention of technology.
    Fathom Graphis

Hi. This is Fathom Graphis again.
Reading one of the threads that mentions an individual asking for help from an Apple certified technician with a problem that's quite the same as mine, I followed the instructions given by this Apple technician that there may be an application or some device activated in the "SHARING" folder (under *System Preferences*) that's causing the problem of the laptop not waking up and requiring hard reset to get back to the Mac OSX user interface.
So, I checked my sharing folder and found that my *"PERSONAL WEB SHARING"* option is activated (Under the SERVICES menu). I deactivated (unchecked) it and tested my laptop sleeping function by shifting the PUT THE COMPUTER TO SLEEP arrow to 1 minute and letting the laptop sleep for 10 minutes. After which, I moved the mouse and the MAC OSX User Interface came abruptly and the laptop didn't restart. I tested it again by letting it sleep for another 10 minutes and waking it up through mouse click and the MAC OSX User Interface showed up abruptly and the laptop, again, restarted.
So far, I'm still putting my laptop under observation. But I just want to inform everybody with their supposed respective SLEEP/WAKE problems on their Macbook pros (or Macbooks) that this may solve their issues (though I provide no guarantees, okay? I'm just a common user who happen to find a solution accidentally).
Still I want to address APPLE that certainly, letting your laptop sleep and waking it up and restarting itself after with the Personal Web Sharing activated (or checked under System Preferences > Sharing > Services) is indeed a "bug" that needs to be fixed. So hopefully, the people at APPLE would try to resolve such an issue as soon as possible (because, to my knowledge, sudden restarts of Hard Disks may cause data damages). God Bless You All.

  • Macbook Pro Retina (late 2013) sleep wake problems under Yosemite

    Hi,
Ever since I installed Yosemite on my MBP (details in the screen shot below), I've been getting Sleep Wake problems.  At night, I simply close the lid of the laptop, leaving all applications running, and in the morning I wake it up.  This worked fine under Mavericks on this laptop, but since Yosemite, every time I open the lid, I've had problems.  Initially, I'd open the lid and the machine would restore from what looked like a deep sleep (screen would get an alpha layer on it, and the little progress bar would appear, as though it's waking from the battery running out).  I ran Disk Utility, which found and repaired an issue on the disk (can't remember the details, unfortunately), and ever since then, when I open the lid, I have to hit the power button to get the machine going.  It restores in about 15 seconds (nice and fast), and it does re-launch all of the applications I had open, but the machine will also show a little system alert, indicating a "Sleep Wake Problem".  Each time I see it, I submit the issue to Apple.  Because I'm an idiot, I forgot to copy the crash log from this morning, but I'll do that tomorrow and append it to this thread.  Meanwhile, if anybody is having a similar experience and can isolate the cause, I'd love to know.  A few variables which might matter:
    * I have a Thunderbolt external hard drive which I use for Time Machine.  Each night, I eject the disk before shutting the laptop down (I bring the machine home with me each night).  My laptop used to have issues ejecting external disks, which I traced (thanks to this board) to an issue with attempting to put an external drive to sleep (I think that was the issue).  I haven't had any issues since that time.
    * The apps I have running all the time are Mail, Safari, Coda (text editor) and VMWare 8, which is running a Windows7 VM.  That's been my environment for years now, yet the sleep-wake issue only started since upgrading to Yosemite.
    Any help/advice is appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hi Ben,
Another sleep issue and adding to your post... My MacBook Pro (2.7ghz early 2011)
Leaving apps open and closing the "lid" and then going to bed... several times thru out the night my MacBook will start to wake up.  The optical drive spins up (DVD is in the drive), the hard drive fires up, I think i can see the screen glow ("lid" is still closed).   Then it sets itself back to sleep (must detect the closed lid).
Did not do this with Mavericks or other earlier OSs.
I have not begun to try to figure this out... today is the day!  lol.

  • Disconnecting external monitor in sleep causes MacBook wake problem

    Hi,
With previous laptops I would put it to sleep and then disconnect the cables for my external monitor and put it in my bag.
However, with my MacBook, after it goes to sleep and when I disconnect the cable for my external monitor it wakes up, except that it doesn't fully wake up. When I open the lid the screen is blank/black, and no amount of closing and opening the lid, pressing keys on the keyboard, clicking my mouse will wake it up. I end up having to force the computer to switch off--which I hate doing.
(In addition, I get that snow problem at random times, which has been mentioned elsewhere on this forum. Also, my previous generation MacBook had that issue with the screen going blank/black randomly for half a second.)
This is really annoying. I'm not impressed at all. It seems that Apple's quality is going downhill. I'm quite disappointed really.

They way that you can do this is stick you computer to sleep and as it goes to sleep you unhook the external monitor.
I would suggest trying it that way

  • Wake problems on 1.67GHz PowerBook5,6

My PowerBook5,6 has a strange behavior I wanted to mention to see if anyone else is experiencing. When the notebook is plugged in and I close the lid and then open it, it will wake normally. The same goes for when it is unplugged, everything works normally. However, if I put it to sleep and then unplug it, and open the lid to wake it while mobile, as I will do anytime I take the notebook somewhere, it will wake briefly and then go back to sleep for a few seconds, or it will wake with the screen brightness shut off, so I think it is still asleep. I stopped using a password because of this annoying behavior, as I got tired of having to enter the password twice.
This problem only happens when the notebook is put to sleep while plugged in and then awoken when it has been unplugged, or vice versa. The cure has been to always wake the computer before I plug it back in, or unplug it before I put it to sleep if I am going to move it. But it's annoying. Any ideas?
    PowerBook G4 15; 1.67 GHz; 512MB; 100GB; SuperDrive   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

This is not an HD PowerBook, its the model just before that. The one with ambient light sensors/drop sensors/1.67GHz. Its model 5,6, not sure what the name of this particular revision is.
I do not have to reboot the computer, usually if I close the lid again and wait about 20 seconds it will fix itself. I have only had to hard boot once. And that caused damage that Disk Utility could not repair, so I reinstalled everything from the install disk after that. Problem still happens. The fix, I guess, is to wake it before I plug it in if it has been unplugged. Kind of a pain though.

  • Could AirPort Extreme be causing my Sleep/Wake problem?

I had not been able to wake my iMac G5 from sleep when touching the keyboard. Apple Genius determined there was no problem with the computer, so suggested I unplug all peripherals to try and isolate cause.
When I unplugged the ethernet cable from the Mac, the problem seemed to be fixed. (All other attachments did not affect problem.) I now have just the modem plugged into the Mac, and will see how the sleep/wake cycle responds.
But I'm wondering, has anyone else had a problem with the Extreme causing a power problem?
    Thanks

Never mind above as problem has also occurred with just the modem plugged in. Extreme is not the culprit. Still unclear as to what is causing it.

  • Ipod sleep/wake problem

    Hi There
i bought an2nd gen ipod second hand the lcd was cracked so opened it up to fix it done that then found out the sleep/wake button did not work so bought a new button flex but still did not work.
So i had a good look around and found a split on the wifi flex the bit that connects to the sleep flex so i have replaced the wifi flex to and it charges and starts up fine but the sleep/wake button still does not work.
So could it be any thing else?
    thanks

Most likely the problem is with your software. Just turn it on and restore it through iTunes if you haven't done so already. If that doesn't work, all I can say is to wait until the next version of 2.x.x comes out and see if problems persist. If they do, then you should probably call Apple and let them know.

  • Sleep/wake problems with j9 PPro10&WM2003

I'm currently developing an app on a pocket PC using WM2003.
My main headache is that if my app is running and the unit goes to sleep, sometimes it won't wake back up.
I can't determine any kind of pattern, it just seems to happen randomly.
I know that's kind of vague, I'm just hoping someone else has run into that problem and knows a workaround.
A more specific question I have is:
Does the J9 fire any events when the unit it's running on "wakes up"? I've tried some of the events available through the AWT, but nothing seems to fire when the unit returns from sleep.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

  • Sleep wake problems with Yosemite update

I faced a multitude of issues with Yosemite 10.10. Following the 10.10.1 update, some of those were solved, but some still remained, namely those related to the Mail app, where mail server has to be selected manually. However, a new problem has arisen with the update: after going on sleep mode, the system does not wake, and needs to be rebooted. This happens every time, and makes me wonder about Apple's reliability, as it is starting to feel microsoft Vista like. Polishing the looks of the system is fine, bu doing so at the expense of performance, reliability and overall user experience is unacceptable. Looks as if a further update can not come soon enough.

  • Interesting Sleep and Wake problem

For about a month I have found that the Macbook pro (2008) Osx10.7 doesn't seem to sleep when the cover closed with the power cord attached. The sleep light doesn't pulsate and it remains warm. When i open it up the log in screen flashes on, then the screen goes dark and I can't log in. I found myself doing forced restarts - then i disconnected the power cord and the log in screen magically reappeared.
It seems I need to disconnect the power cord wehn closing the lid, and if I forget to do that I need to disconnect when reopening the lid in order to log in.
I have tried resetting all the power settings to default, but it still does that.
Not a major problem, but puzzling.

The problem isn't so much that it won't sleep or wake. It does seem to do both more or less, but that if the power cord is connected it doesn't fully sleep (the LED doesn't blink) and that waking results in the login screen flashing on momentarily followed by a black screen which requires either a forced reboot or simply unplugging the power cord. Once the power cord is unplugged then logging in is easy as the screen recovers.
My question is why is this happening? Some new feature of lion? It has only been going on a few weeks.
It was quite troublesome until I figured out I could resolve the problem by unplugging the power cord, but I remain mystified as to why it happens.

  • Two updates to ML and they still haven't fixed the wake problem

I still need to leave my IMac to never sleep because it can not be awakened through wifi. Even when you wake the computer while your in front of it it still takes a few seconds to connect to the network. I spent hours on the phone with apple support and tried a hundred differnt things and still nothing has worked. Has anyone actually solved this problem.

Maybe you just lucked out but both my devices running ios 6.0.1 have wifi problems shutting of at random times during sleep. I know you guys will say when its plugged in it doesn't lose wifi true but I never remember having this problem in the previous ios verison from ios 4 to 5(On my Iphone 4, and from my Iphone 4s from IOS 5) until I updated both devices to ios 6  or even when I had a iTouch 3rd gen long time ago I never remember it shutting of my wifi. I am telling you this never happened before IOS 6 where I need to leave it plugged in just to have my wifi during wake up.

I thought I believed my iPhone 4 with iOS5.0 would not disconnect during sleep mode. However, I was wrong. What I did was to ping the IP addresses on my iPhone 4 (iOS5) and iPhone 5 (iOS 6 then, and iOS6.0.1 now) when they were in sleep mode. Very true that there were timed-out on both devices. Once I woke them up, ping went thru. I did a scan on my home network using my iPad while the other 2 phones were in sleep mode, I was not able to see them.
I thought my iPhone4 did not disconnect too. But again, I think the reconnecting to wifi on iOS 5 is SO MUCH quicker than on iOS6 so user would think there was never a disconnect.

  • Sleep and Wake problems under Lion

    I installed Lion on a Early 2008 Mac Pro (MacPro3,1), 2x Quad-Core Xeon 2400 series @ 2.8GHz, 10GB RAM, 120GB OCZ Vertex2 SSD, GeForce 8800GT with dual 24" monitors setup.
I did a clean install of the OS from USB key.
I've run into the following problems so far :
    - When putting the system into sleep, it now takes more than 20 seconds for the fans to stop and for the system to finally enter sleep mode.
It took at worse 5 seconds under Snow Leopard for the same action.
    - If 'wake for ethernet network access' is checked under energy Saver, the mac will seem to wake from sleep when another computer requests access (AFP or SMB share)
but the graphics card fan will spin up to it's maximum rpm setting, creating a high-pitched noise, just like the first 5 seconds when cold-booting the system.
However, the system won't be available via the network until i press one of the keys on the keyboard (or click the mouse), just like if I woke the Mac manually by myself.
Pressing the key also makes the graphics card go back into normal rpm mode.
    - If the screens are already into sleep state (activated via ctrl-shift-eject),  you cannot put the Mac itself into sleep by pushing the power button.
Instead, the screens wake up and nothing happens, the mac won't go into sleep.  However, the Mac goes into sleep from normal screen activity.
    - When waking from sleep, i've got no network connectivity from Ethernet, although System Preferences shows the card as 'connected'.
I now have to restart the Mac to restore connectivity.
I have already reset the SMC and emptied the caches, but the symptoms are still here.  Snow Leopard had none of these problems.
Does anyone have the same problems ? Could a firmware update possibly fix these annoyances ?

I am having very similar sleep problems and have a few very clunky workarounds and observations.  Observations:  closing the clamshell on my MBPro will often fail to put the computer to sleep.  The LED stays solid and does not throb, the fan spins and the CPU stays active.  It will get hot if this happens for a while.  This is probably only happening with the power cord plugged in, though I'm not certain.  There are two "classes" of failure.  This is the first.  The other is the long wake-up: the power button will not wake the computer, nor will spacebar/return/escape hit repeatedly, until it decides its ready.  But there is another more puzzling failure:  clamshell closed, CUP running, I lift the screen and the login window flashes long enough for me to type my first characters, then the screen goes dark.  I close the clamshell and the CPU goes back on, the LED shines brightly, the screen goes dark (no glowing apple on top).  I lift and repeat.
I solved this issue by noticing that the screen would light up as I was closing the clamshell.  So now I close the screen to about 1 inch from full closure, and then pull it back up to see not the login window, but my desktop ready for work.  It seems like display, CPU, and power management are all out of sync.

  • IPhone 5 random slow to wake problem?

Sometimes on my iPhone 5 it randomly is slow to wake up, can take anywhere from 5-20 seconds to wake. Like when the phone is sleep, and I press either the home or power button on top, it won't wake or anything, and also when it's not waking and still at a black screen, ill try to plug it into the charger to see if it wakes and still it stays black screen. It's like the phone is like dead for 5-20 secs and wakes back up. I have a feeling it's not a hardware problem because my older iPhone 5 had this problem so I replaced it at an Apple Store and the new one still gets it.
If I wait a bit then it'll wake up and turn on. I have already replaced the phone with a new one at the Apple Store for this reason, and the newer one has the same exact problem, so I'm guessing it's something I did.....
My phone is a factory unlocked one and my SIM card currently is a T-Mobile and I cut it myself and I did not cut it so great and it's smaller than the SIM tray but it fits and works, maybe that's the problem?
Has anyone ever had this wierd wake issue with the new iPhone 5?
I am on iOS 6.0.1 by the way.

    I have the same problem.
I went to Apple Store and Genius Bar expert told me that the problem is caused by some app.
He told me to delete all apps and then install one by one and test to find out what is causing this problem.

  • Sleep/wake Problem with 15" MBP

    Hey guys,
Just recently, my MacBook Pro has been acting up on me whenever I open it to wake it from sleep. The screen will wake for about 2 seconds and then will go back to sleep. The only way to get the screen back is by hitting the button that lowers the brightness then I have to hit the brightness increase button to get it back to normal which is getting really annoying.
When I put it to sleep with the screen open by hitting the power button, it'll wake up perfectly fine. The problem only occurs when I take it out of sleep by lifting the screen.
Has anyone experienced this before and is it an easy fix?
    -Thanks

I just tried unplugging the charger and it comes awake with no issues at all, just comes up black when plugged in and have to use the brightness buttons to wake screen.....hmmmm
    Jchaves wrote:
I did a little searching before i posted and it seems like the trouble doesn't have to do with the laptop itself it has to do with some sort of glitch in Lion. Does anyone know of any settings that i can change that can make this problem go away?

  • Sleep/Wake problem

My 24" Intel iMac (10.5.6) is asleep and it won't wake up. I have tried another keyboard, in another USB port, and still no response. The sleep light is pulsing, and I quit all apps before putting it to sleep, I have even tried the power button, with no response.

It sounds like you will have to force it to power down. Press and hold the on button for at least ten seconds until the computer shuts down (you will know when). This is better than pulling the power cord as the hard drive has the opportunity to spin down slowly rather than 'braking' suddenly.
    Analogy:
Stopping your car with gentle braking as opposed to stopping it with a tree.
Once you have it in a shut-down state there are number of things you can do. I would be inclined to look at the following thread first, as you may be suffering from what seems to be a common freezing issue amongst 10.5.6 upgraders using 24" iMacs:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1467276&tstart=0
If this is of no help, then it's the usual bunch of standard fixes (Zap PRam, single-user mode, PMU reset, booting from system disk and running disk repair).
I hope some of this helps... or points you in the right direction anyway.
