10.6 and Nikon scanner

I haven't upgraded to 10.6 yet and I wont till I get an answer to this question.
I have a Nikon coolscan scanner. To scan directly into Photoshop CS3 I have to run Photoshop in Rosetta mode. Can I do this with 10.6? I read somewhere that 10.6 doesn't allow you to run any program in Rosetta mode.

That is not correct. You may have misinterpreted one of the following statements:
- 10.6 will not allow you to run any program in Classic mode.
- Rosetta is no longer installed by default in 10.6.
However, Rosetta is available as an optional installation in 10.6. It's one of the options when you customize the OS X installation and you can install Rosetta later by putting in your Snow Leopard disk and running the installer.
All that said, you should refer to the Nikon note about Snow Leopard to see if Nikon provides any updates.
As I remember, doesn't Nikon provide a standalone version of NikonScan so you don't have to cripple Photoshop to scan? I can't remember because I no longer use Nikon's poorly supported software. I drive my CoolScan with VueScan.

Browser (for PSE 3 or 5) and Nikon Scanner

I have just bought a Nikon Coolscan 5000 ED. When trying to scan in either negatives or slides, it works perfectly well from the Editor workspace. However, when I use the Browser (which is the way I can get the fastest workflow), while I can preview the results, scanning them results in the error message: "Failed to obtain files from the device. The file size exceeds the maximum size allowed. To decrease the file size, try reducing the image resolution dimensions." It doesn't matter whether I try to import the images in TIFF, JPG, or PNG, the results are the same. The bit depth is 8, width is 5959 and height is 3946 for the scan settings (which, as I said, work perfectly well from the Editor workspace).

Just to see if my PE3 / Canon Scanner produced the same results I tried to scan an 8x10 at 600 ppi (4800 by 6000) with the same failure in Organizer and no problem in Editor.
FWIW: This may be scanner dependent but I've found that for subjects other than negative/slide scanning anything over 300 ppi produces more problems than benefits not to mention the impact on edit processing time.

I suggest you determine if compatible drivers are available either in the OS X drivers package or directly from the manufacturer. The following has a link for application compatibility. You can check this, too:

Why Lightroom cannot read Nikon Scanner's NEF?

I am trying to scan my old negatives with a nikon coolscan IV. There are optiions for saving the files in NEF raw file format or TIFF format. TIFF format works fine, but Nikon's NEF file format is not openable with Lightroom or Photoshop CS3 or CS2. I also have a Nikon D50 and NEF from the camera are imported and readable by Lightroom and Photoshop. Can anyone explain to me why this is the case, since both are NEF files. Is it the setting of the scan or something else? Is there a fixed for this?

Nikon's "scanner NEF" files contain EXACTLY the same image data is their TIFF files, just packaged differently in a way that is incompatible with normal TIFF readers such as Lightroom.
We will probably add support for these files in some future version, however this will only be so users don't have to convert these files to normal TIFF files using Nikon software. This future support would have absolutely ZERO quality advantage over just using TIFF in the first place.
In the meantime, just use TIFF with Nikon scanner software. Using "scanner NEF" is a waste of time, and is completely pointless.

10.6.4 and Nikon Coolscan 5000 and Fuji ScanSnapS1500M

Both scanners stopped working after the update. Attempted to re-install the software but no luck.
Fuji scanner: Software starts but scanner is not recognized by the software
Nikon scanner: Nikon Scan crashes repeatedly on start (i.e. Won't open).
Hopefully ScanSnap will update their software soon, however I doubt Nikon will. If anyone had a way around to make it work again it would be much appreciated.

Two options that you might find useful are Silverfast http://www.silverfast.com/show/scanners-nikon/en.html and VueScan http://www.hamrick.com/
Silverfast will handle dust removal.
Silverfast is somewhat expensive, and VueScan is under $100.

What is a good slide and negative scanner?

Just a warning, I'll be posting this in multiple forums to get a good selection of opinions.
Hi, I need to buy a film and slide scanner. I like epson, but in my experience with these types of scanners, they can be sketchy in quality. Can you suggest a good slide and film scanner that you've used and that works well?

I've used a Nikon Super Coolscan 8000 before, with spectacular results -- great colours, good grain management, excellent infrared-detection dust and scratch removal, fantastic resolution and sharpness. My only complaint is that due to the curvature (concavity) of slide film, the focus was not equally sharp across the entire image. If focus is set to the centre, the edges and corners were a bit sharper. Anyway know of a scanner in the same price ballpark (circa $1500-$3500) that handles that aspect better? eg. glass sandwich to flatten the film or something?

This began shortly after I installed my new CD burner with Nero 9 burning software, about the same time I also installlerade my new Nikon camera software ViewNX2, I ran Avira scan and Microsoft Egan virus scan and they say everything is good in it, he reported a few times, I ran Avira scan of your computer and Microsoft's own Virus Scanning and they say everything is good in it, he reported a few times, tried again now and the sound is heard all the way but the image is still, therefore gentle freezes, got no number on the bug report so I can not say that. Also ask your pardon for errors in language that may be present but hope you understand anyway!

PS CS3, Camera Raw 4.6 Update and Nikon D810 NEF File Reading Issue

Currently Have Photoshop CS3 & Adobe Bridge CS3 2.1.1.9.
According to Adobe, Camera Raw 4.6 supports Nikon D810 NEF files. I have downloaded Camera Raw 4.6 Update. When
I try to open Nikon D810 NEF files, I get Photoshop CS3 error that says
"cannot complete request your because it is not the right kind of
document. These NEF files wont open in Adobe Bridge at all. What am I doing wrong?

Before I purchased, let me get your thoughts on another option that just occurred to me which involves:
1)Editing my D810 NEF files in LR 5.6, which I have, then exporting/saving the edited files as JPEGs.
2) Doing any additional editing, as necessary (i.e. that might require layering or selections..etc) , with the JPEGs with Bridge or PS CS3.
This method wont involve any additional software purchase now.. right? Am I missing anything. here? Since my final output to my customers are JPEGs any way, wont this work? Will I be at any disadvantage. Am I missing anything. here?

Image Capture, upon opening, always reads "No camera or scanner selected" (and the scanner doesn't scan. Why?).

"Image Capture" application, upon opening, always reads "No camera or scanner selected." Scanner does not scan (HP C4680, All-in-one type). Mine is a Mac OS X (Snow Leopard 10.6.7). All connections seem fine. What's wrong? Am decidedly NOT a "techie" and this is first computer ever owned by enquirer. Thank you.

Some additional thoughts.
Does the Preferences have the option to open the Scanner window ticked ?
Does the Scanner appear in the Browse Menu when you Browse for Devices ?
My Epson CX6400 which is of some age now does not show Scanner Ablities in th System Profiler for OS X 10.5.8
The Printer part uses the OS X installed Cups + Gutenprint driver.
I have also installed the Epson stuff that came on the CD which I am sure installed a Twain Driver for the scanner part.
It seems this is what the Browse info tells me is being used.
In Hard Drive/Library/Image Capture/Devices the Epson Scanner.app has been added.
In the same Image Capture folder a Twain Data Source folder is also present and the Scanner .ds file is in there.

Where do you expect to see the thumbnails and where are they not showing up? In Bridge or in the Mac Finder/Windows Explorer?
If you can, supply a screen shot.

IPhoto and Nikon NEF files in Yosemite

Hello,
Since I installed Yosemite last weekend, I cannot upload photos from my Nikon D610 NEF (RAW) format. Every time I have tried to upload -either by connecting the camera with the cable or by inserting the memory card in the Macbook- iPhoto starts to idle when I click "import photos". Beach ball appears and after several minutes iPhoto crashes. I use a Macbook Pro 2.8Ghz, intel core i7, 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 (late 2011). I even tried doing it one by one... same problem.
Is this a problem that Apple is going to solve: NEF or RAW compatibility with iPhoto and Nikon files? Does anyone now how long for this to get fixed by Apple? I have hundreds of photos in my memory card to upload and work with.

Support for your camera was added in Camera Raw 5.4 which means support will be available in PSE7 and automatically in versions 8, 9 & 10.

Tethering issue lightroom 4.4 and Nikon D800

I'm having trouble tethering my Nikon D800 to Lightroom 4.4.
Attempts at tethering mostly produce "No Camera Detected" after File > Tethered Capture in Lightroom.
There have been some occasions however when the camera was detected and tethering functioned for a short while.
These successful occasions happened using the same approach and equipment.
I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit Version 6.1 (with i7) and both camera and Lightroom have been updated.

Thanks for the help. I have made progress this way: I updated the drivers for the Nikon D800 on the computer. Lightroom and Nikon's ViewNX2 were already fully updated. This didn't help. I deleted NikonView, restarted, and found the problem gone. Lightroom tethers as it should without ViewNX2 on the machine. This is still a mystery to me but I can tether.

Do you mean someone is offering to sell you a disc that was bundled with their camera?
I doubt LR, itself, is crippled, but there could be some restriction for licensing or some hoops to jump through to get the serial number, which might only work if you have the camera’s sales receipt or know other details about the purchase.
There may also be fine print that says only the person who purchased the camera can use the LR serial number. I don’t know how Adobe would enforce that restriction, but maybe they have some way, especially if this LR version is for a camera purchase in a different country.

If you have an HP 4 Laserjet and a scanner would you please, print and scan the PCL test page in 600 dpi?
I would like to print theREt pattern image of the PCL test page to see whether my current laser printer uses the right amount of toner. Could anyone with a Laserjet 4 post this file in tiff or pdf for me?
According to the service manual of the HP laserjet 4, your printer has to be configured on the control panel to print with 600 dpi otherwise this pattern won't be printed when you print the PCL test page.
Once you printed it, would you please, scan it with the same resolution (600 dpi) and post it for me?
(If anyone would like to know how can you use this image to see if the toner consumption is set correctly just let me know, I will explain it here, no problem.)

It appears as though the HP 4 Laserjet is a commercial Laserjet. It may be better to post in the commercial Laserjet forums.
