10.6 off my machine!!

I am having my new Mac wiped of this OS, and 10.5.9 re-installed, as 10.6 is not compatible with some of Macs' own software!!
And I was not even asked if I wanted it when I bought my new iMac, after my original(2005,G5) model burned up its logic board for the THIRD time in 4 years.
I run Logic Express 8, and, by Macs own admission, 10.6 was not even tested for it. What were they thinking?
Also, many of my third-party software will not run, including Toontracks EZdrummer and others.
Where is Woz when you need him??

http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/ has a pretty comprehensive list of what software is compatible and what still needs to be updated.
It looks like Apple has released Logic Express 9 which is compatible to Snow Leopard. As far as your third party software, those companies had months to test and update their software. You may want to contact them to see if they plan on updating their software for compatibility with 10.6.

  • How do I switch off Time Machine in Lion Server remotely?

    So here's what I want to do:
    I have a mac mini with OSX Lion Server running providing wireless backups for the laptops in the house. I want to rsync these backups, as sparsebundle images, to a machine at my work.
    I have the rsync working over ssh correctly, and have verified that if I rsync a sparsebundle there and back again then everything works fine. However, this only works if the sparsebundle wasn't mounted at the time of the sync.
    I can use 'ssh xxx@xxx "hdiutil info"' to determine if the image is mounted, but I would like ideally to be able to switch off time machine remotely for the duration of the rsync copy.
    Does anyone know of a command-line way of switching off Time Machine in OSX Lion Server from the command line.
    As an extra question, for bonus marks, is there any way of verifying that a sparsebundle is mountable from a windows machine?

    I'm going to answer my own question:
    I was more or less completely on the wrong track. When performing a networked time-machine backup the sparse bundle is mounted on the remote machine for one thing. So hdiutil won't tell me if the backup is going on.
    Also, backing up the sparsebundle is probably a bad idea in general, since if it's corrupt then none of the files will be easily recoverable.
    So instead I've written a bash script that
    a) mounts the sparse bundle on the server machine. If this fails, then a backup is in progress. The script exits in this case, but I guess it could always try again
    b) Performs an rsync on the contents of the sparsebundle
    c) ejects the sparsebundle.
    For those interested, here's the script. Note that I had to build rsync 3.0.9 to get this to work, the bundled rsync barfs on the hardlinks in time machine backups.
    (go here http://www.behindtherack.com/?p=308 for the rsync build instructions).
    And here's the script
    #!/bin/bash
    user=dave
    remotehost=your.home.machine
    remoteport=5050
    sshkeyfile=~/ssh.key.file
    imagepath="/Volumes/tmachine/Shared Items/Backups/machine-name.sparsebundle"
    remotepath="/Volumes/Time\ Machine\ Backups/Backups.backupdb/machine-name/Latest/"
    localpath=~/Local-backup-path
    # mount path
    mountresult=`ssh $user@$remotehost -p$remoteport -i $sshkeyfile "hdiutil mount \"$imagepath\" -readonly"`
    devpath=${mountresult%% *}
    # did the mount work out?
    if [[ "$devpath" == /dev/disk* ]]
    then
              echo "Mount succeeded, remote disk mounted to $devpath"
    else
              echo $mountresult
              echo $devpath
              echo "Remote mount failed, exiting"
              exit
    fi
    # now run the rsync
    /usr/local/bin/rsync -rv --rsync-path="/usr/local/bin/rsync" --rsh="ssh -p$remoteport -i $sshkeyfile -l $user" "$user@$remotehost:$remotepath" $localpath
    # unmount sparsebundle
    ssh $user@$remotehost -p$remoteport -i $sshkeyfile "hdiutil eject $devpath"

    Have you updated your iTunes on your computer? WIth a device running iOS7, you need iTunes 11.
    When you removed iTUnes, did you see something named 'apple mobile device support' or something like it? (The exact name varies from operating system to operating system). If you see that, uninstall it too. That's the drivers for your iPhone and they should self-install when you plug your device in.
    If all that is fine, have you checked your cable and USB port? a malfunctioning cable can keep you from syncing.

  • Can't turn off time machine

    I am trying to turn off time machine, as I use a different backup program and am happy with it and want to avoid the intrusive windows that keep asking if I want time machine to backup to my external drive.
    I am in 10.6.6. When I select preferences:time machine and switch to "off" button, I get a window that asks me to select a time capsule. When I hit "cancel," it automatically reverts to "on."
    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Select the "none" drive in the window. That should turn it off.
    If it still prompts you every time you connect a disk, download the free [Tinker Tool|http://www.bresink.com/osx/TinkerTool.html] app. Click +Snow Leopard+ in the toolbar, then the "Don't ask for backup disks ..." option.

  • Turning off time machine

    Hello,
    We have been using Time Machine to maintain the backups of movies that we record for our research. We've found that it would be more convenient to simply have an archive or list of all of the movies that we've backed-up, rather than figuring out WHEN the movie was made in order to retrieve it from Time Machine. It would just be easier to have a long list of every movie we've ever made. Is there an easy way to turn off Time Machine and restore all back ups into a sort of unified directory? Thanks. By the way, our computer has a 250 gig disk while the external USB drive that we back up to is 750 gigs. Thanks.

    No, there isn't. You'll have to do it by hand individually. Also, Time Machine is a back up tool, not an archiving tool and you seem to be using it for archiving. That's a bad idea for several reasons. Old TM backups are thinned without warning so you might loose some old copies this way if they are only saved on TM drive and not on the main drive. also, when the TM drive fills up TM will start deleting old backups to make room for new ones (it's supposed to warn you about that if you checked the appropriate box in TM system preferences). Therefore if you want to archive some files to have definite access to them later don't use TM for that.

  • Get individual files off Time Machine?

    I had a new internal hard drive put in and am rebuilding the drive piece by piece. I had the old drive backed up on time machine and have that intact.
    There are some files that I didn't pull off the old hard drive that I'd like to get off of Time Machine (iTunes library file, etc). Is it possible to get those files off the Time Machine disk, without starting time machine backing up this new internal yet?

    Connect the drive.
    Then, hold down the Option key and select Browse Other Backup Disks… from the Time Machine menu.
    See:
    How do I view or restore selected items?
    How can I see my backups, or the backups for a different Mac?
    How can I restore a file/folder to an alternate location?
    Much more there.

  • Turn off a machine

    Hello to all people,
    I'm trying to monitoring a set of rotative machinery. I want to shut down the machine when a monitoring parameter like vibration or rotate velocity overcomes a established limit or level. I was thinking to use a switch to develop this aplication, but I'm not sure about this. I will be very greateful if anyboby can give me some guidelines.
    Thanks.

    You can just remove the Lacie freeware app.
    Time Machine is best if you want to be able to easily maintain a backup set of incremental backups.  TM will allow you to go back in time to any point on your machines history, until the backup drive fills up.  Then, it will start deleting the oldest back set to make room for newer ones.  TM also readily allows you to restore individual files, folders and so on, or the entire hard drive, depending on what you need to recover.
    The two cloning apps I mentioned (both are superb apps, CCC is "donationware" and SuperDuper costs a bit for the full version) are best suited for making a complete, exact duplicate of your hard drive.  This will even be bootable, so you could boot from it and run "your" system and setup.  This is useful should your internal hard drive going completely south and you get a replacement and want to put everything back exactly as it was (TM will also do this however).  A bootable clone is also useful though, as if your internal drive fails, you can boot from the clone and still use your machine - say to finish a deadline before getting the thing repaired, or to run diagnostic software, or deauthorise the device in iTunes before sending it off to Apple for repair.
    So, decide what this disc's backup is primarily for, then make your pick.  You already have TM, and the cloning tools can be downloaded (and have good documentation too).
    My only concern with the Lacie software is they are primarily a hardware maker, and I have no idea what kind of tech support, if any, they provide for their freebie backup software, nor how good they are at keeping it up to date with OS X releases and such.  Also, how good is their recovery software - a backup ulitimately is only as useful as it's restore functions and features are.  TM's restore is features are about as difficult as draging and dropping files or folders in the finder are.

  • A/c power plug broke off inside machine--how to repair

    my daughter's ibook g4 power supply plug broke off, it is inside the socket in the machine--what is the practical way to get this fixed, please?
    thanks--

    Hi there and welcome to Apple Discussions!
    Your question is not unique, as unfortunately some users have experienced
    some mishaps with their DC line-in plug (and socket) and so if you can
    get the broken piece out of the computer's DC-in socket, that would be a
    good thing. Sometimes a visit to a full service Apple Store (official) where
    a Genius bar exists, and you've called ahead for a specified time, a skilled
    person there may be able to figure out how to remove the broken end.
    Of course, a replacement power supply is generally needed, to restore
    the illuminated original plug with an identical part is almost impossible;
    though I have read about people getting a generic plug and managing
    to get the DC polarity correct (so as to not damage the computer.) But
    the best fix would be to get a new replacement Apple power adapter.
    Getting the broken "pin" section of the AC Adapter's DC plug out of
    the computer is the larger concern; since the socket itself may be
    damaged if this isn't done properly. Or it may have been damaged
    by the action that caused the plug to be broken in the first place.
    There are several posts in these Discussion forums, the iBook G4
    and G3 (white) and PowerBook G4 models use a similar power setup;
    so finding replies already posted is not hard.
    In fact, I replied to one such post and so searched back and found
    the URL to a question and replies. Note mine is near the end of this:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=3126597
    And the quoted text in that post is from one of the links in the post.
    (It is not mine; to clarify what appears to be an edited four letter word.)
    The blue letters in the post are links to outside web sites; I am not
    sure of the total validity of their content and they only serve to show
    someone has tried some ideas and they may have had adequate
    results from them; and that's about as far as I'd go. They're worth a look.
    [Another set of posts (by user name) regarding this question
    and out-of-warranty repair options, etc with the DC-in board
    and power plug damage, among others, would be those by
    an experienced iBook user in these boards, Rhonda.]
    Best of luck to you and happy computing!

  • IMac died, how do I get data off Time Machine to new iMac

    My sisters iMac has had HD problems in the past - we replaced hd at Apple in the past.  I am unable to start the computer up again to look into anything. It was apparently sending out a lot of error messages, the main one being the HD was out of space. I first tried to transfer some big files to an empty external, but couldn't. I tried to restore the OSX, but it failed.  Can't remember the exact message, but I know at that time, I figured the HD failed.   ANYWAY...now they cannot get it started up.  It's old - so they have decided to buy a sparkly new iMac for the house.
    Here's my question:  They ONLY backed up with the Time machine - onto an external HD that sits on their desk.  When the new computer arrives, what is the best way to go forward.  Obviously, the easiest is to restore from a TM backup....but is this RISKY being we don't know what was going wrong with the computer? I don't want them to drag over any problems  to a new machine.   Is there anyway to ONLY pull info/data - music and pics - over from the TM backup on the new machine?  I know with a program like CCC which I also use, I think this is an option - but I really don't know with TM??
    Should/Can I bring both computers to the Genius bar for something like this ?
    Any info to get us started will be very helpful !  Little sis relies on me for help....so I turn to you gurus !

    I changed to the Adobe Photography Program from a single app creative cloud license and was getting a message saying that it couldn't verify my membership. Had a lot of problems trying to reach Adobe and so thought I'd delete the program and reinstall it, thinking that would reset the whole thing. I deleted it but now cannot install again.
