  • Windows 7 64 Bit, Intel Core i7, Photoshop CS4

I just had a new computer built with Windows 7 64 Bit, Intel Core i7 and an nVidia GT240 Card....I am unable to view my "Libraries" in the Bridge...I only get "no files to view".  If nothing else my Documents, Pictures and Music should be showing.  I have all patches, updates installed for the computer, Photoshop, and my printer.  Also when I click on Print Preview in the printer dialogue box (Epson R2400) I get an error msg stating that the "Display Driver shut down and has restarted successfully"  When this occurs, my screen goes blank for a moment then starts up with an all white screen until the print preview finally appears.  Any help?  On the printer issue, Epson simply says to insure the drivers are up to date, which they all are.  I've uninstalled and re installed everything a few times to no avail.

    Thank you!!

  • 32-bit Intel Core Duo ok with upcoming 64-bit Leopard?

How well suited is the 32-bit Intel Core Duo in my MacBook Pro to run the future 64-bit Leopard OS? What would be the compromises?
Should I sell my Core Duo now while I can (maybe...) and upgrade to the 64-bit Core2 Duo. Would a 32-bit chip such as the Core Duo struggle to operate efficiently - or at least as fast as it does under 32-bit Tiger - when run within the 64-bit Leopard OS?
    Cheers
    Ant

You might find this tidibit (from AnandTech) )interesting, Kappy:
"Why a 64-bit mode can actually be slower than a 32-bit counterpart
If all else is equal, a 64-bit MPU will be slower than its 32-bit equivalent. A study conducted by DEC found that, on average, compiling for 64bit programs decreases performance by 5%. This is because 64-bit address pointers occupy more space, resulting in higher data cache miss rates. In fact, 64-bit ISAs still support 64-bit addressing and 32-bit data operands, specifically to keep code size down and the miss rate penalty to a minimum; thus 32-bit integer data is still going to be used when the larger range of 64-bit integers are not needed.
    What good is 64-bit computing?
There is one good use for 64-bit integer arithmetic: 64-bit flat memory addressing. Offering memory addressing beyond 4GB, 64-bit addressing needs 64-bit general purpose registers and 64-bit integer arithmetic for memory pointer calculations. This obviously has no effect on 32-bit vs. 64-bit performance, since 64-bit memory addressing on a 32-bit processor is a moot point."
So it's not clear that going 64-bit, in and of itself, would yield any improvement in performance; it may well be worse in some cases (and your analogy might well be true, depending on the cache algorhythms and efficiency).
Certainly if one processor has a wider memory bus than another, then the first processor should, all else being equal, outperform the second processor. I can't find specs on the memory fetch for the Core Duo and the Core 2 Duo, so I can't say whether or not they differ. The PowerPC G5 processor actually has a 128-bit wide memory fetch (64-bit in and 64-bit out) though it's classified as a "64-bit processor" (based on it's memory address space, I would presume).
So, as you allude, one has to be careful making performance estimates just based on a desciption of a processor being "32 bit" or "64 bit". We'll have to wait to see reasonable benchmarks between the Core Duo and the Core 2 Duo running a 64-bit OS before we'll really know what advantage, if any, there is.
    Cheers.

  • 64-bit or 32-bit Intel?

I am assuming these new Intel machines are still the old 32-bit style. Is this correct? What are we sacrificing for back stepping? I work in a PC environment office with my G5 and it's amazing how much clearer and brigher my monitor (we all have the same one) looks next to the others.

    Jim,
As as software engineer who has worked in various application and systems areas and over the era of transition from 16-bit to 32-bit hardware, I can only agree with you that choice of hardware must be dictated by the needs of the use to which it will be put. So clearly for today's desktops (and even more so for laptops), 32-bit hardware is certainly adequate. Whether or not disk speeds are a factor also depends on the application. Obviously, database-intensive applications typically run the mass storage devices ragged. Other applications barely touch the disk once the program and its data are loaded.
Anyway, what I really wanted to point out, though you're probably aware of this already, is that the new iMac (Intel dual-core model) and the MacBook Pro both use faster memory and memory buses than any of their predecessors (with the possible exception of the heavy-duty G4 or G5 desktops--I'm not really familiar with their hardware details).
To give you an idea of a result I found surprising (pleasantly so), a theorem prover I've written in Java (a very CPU- and memory-intensive application) runs much faster (about 50% faster) on the iMac with its dual-core 2 GHz processor(s) than it does on the Linux box with an Intel P4 HyperThreading CPU running at 3 GHz. The reason? The RAM and FSB bus on that Linux box are a lot slower than the ones on the iMac. So even though this application, which currently is principally single-threaded (Java apps can always use a processor core for garbage collection), benefits more from the faster FSB and RAM on the iMac than it is hurt by having a processor running only two thirds the speed of the on in the Linux box.

  • Win 7 64-bit, Intel 4600 graphics hangs when running Punch home design software

Punch Home and Landscape Pro V17.7 runs great on T500 Win 7 32-bit... all rendering is quick and accurate. This same design program opens, but hangs immediately when any attempt is made to modify the design.
I have posted to the Punch support site. When I called Tec, he said that my version would run on 32-bit or 64-bit machine.
It appears all program components are in the Programs (x86) directory and the Registry seems to have the proper paths and entries (beyond my level of expertise to modify.)
I also read the post regarding the latest Intel Iris 4600 driver on the Intel website, and I could follow this procedure to install the latest driver... but I would be DOWN if the driver did not work.
So, anyone have any ideas as to the proper steps to solve this issue?

I see. Unfortunately you can't install the generic Intel driver on Haswell systems without losing brightness control. (You can still try installing it using Device Manager > Have Disk.)

  • 32-bit Intel CPU + Wine + Intel GMA945

So this weekend I decided to try installing Touhou 7: Perfect Cherry Blossom on my laptop. I already had Wine installed to run a PC98 emulator, so I assumed it would work fine.
I get a waterfall of errors whenever I try to run wine th07.exe claiming that the setting the pixel format failed, "call to IWineD3DDevice_CreateSwapChain failed" and that it can't create the front buffer. Who would have thought a search for "failed to create the front buffer" would only return Wine source code?
I tried downgrading to xf86-video-intel-legacy to see if that would actually change anything, and it did. I got the game to run, but at about 1-2fps and with horrible texture issues. I got an error saying it couldn't use GEM so it downgraded to default; looking that up hints that my (stock Arch) kernel would have PAE enabled and that would be causing it.
edit: Forgot to mention, I have since gone back to the latest xf86-video-intel, and I do appear to have GEM working when grepping glxinfo for it.
I've searched the board for issues similar to this and all I've found are problems related to Wine on 64-bit systems, and people are recommended to install nvidia-utils. That won't install (as intel-dri requires libgl, and nvidia-utils conflicts with libgl), and besides, I somehow nvidia would magically make Intel cards work right with Wine.
Does anyone have an idea what might be up? I've spent literally all night trying stuff and nothing worked.
If anyone needs me to post config files or output from a command, let me know which ones.

Hmm, I used to play this same game in wine, and it worked perfectly. (this was a year ago before all the xorg/intel upgrading) I just tried executing th07.exe in wine, and now it no longer works... I tried it in an old wine prefix to a wine  version I know used to play it, and it still fails... no idea what the problem is...
So yeah... i guess if you want it to work you need some different xorg/intel driver combination...

  • Plugin is not working with Mac 10.6 {64 bit intel machine}

    Hi,
I have tried to extend the AutomationFilter sample plugin. Earlier there was problem that the plugin name was not showing. Now it is showing, but when I click on it I am getting the following error
"Could not complete the AutomationFilter command because there is not enough memory (RAM)."
I have gone through the documentation which describes the plugin setting for 64 bit mode. And made the following changes in the pipl resource.
Any suggestion for fixing this problem will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks

I would like to add the some more to the prb..
when i am building the sample with Base SDK +i386 and debugging the sample from xcode then it's being load and working fine. The reason what i found is while debugging the photoshop is loaded in x32 bit which comes on the splash screen. But when I am directly running the photoshop application then the plugin did not gets loaded also the photoshop splash screen show it is loading in x64 mode.
    In all other  cases as
         Base SDk + x86-64
         10.5 /10.6 SDK + x86-64
when I am running the application I am getting error as not enough RAM for executing this command.
What I can do this fix it.
    Thanks!

  • Java SE 6 on 32-bit Intel machines?

I have a Core Duo iMac, so I lucked out on the SE 6 update. The question is, does anybody know of an alternate JVM that I could use? I need to get SE6 up and running so I don't have to boot into Windows every time I need to get some coding done... Serious Java development is just completely out of the question on OS X Leopard right now, even the "current" J2SE 5.0 is so broken it's not even funny.

To reply to my own question, I found http://landonf.bikemonkey.org/static/soylatte/ in a Slashdot thread, and it seems somewhat promising. People who really need to use Java SE 6 might find this useful.
Anybody have any experience with using alternate JVMs?

  • Javascript 32 (I think) bit Intel Mac Can't Access Sites.

I don't know what's going on. I've the proper version of Flashplayer installed and working but cannot access YouTube or Facebook through Safari or Firefox. The error message I get on YouTube is that I must not have FlashPlayer or Javascript on my computer but I know the error cannot be with Flashplayer as I am running version 9.0_124 on Leopard.

Some users have mentioned that the latest Flash Player (v.9.0.115.0) conflicts with Leopard, and that they have needed to revert to v. 9.0.47. This can be downloaded from here:
