10.6 refuses to install on Xserve

We have 3 Xserves, two which were on 10.5 and a new one that come loaded with 10.6. We want to move the other two servers to 10.6. I made a NetInstall of the 10.6 DVD and used that to upgrade one of the two Xserves without issue. When I tired to upgrade the remaining Xserve, however, the install failed. There's no error message, no hint of what's gone wrong -- only that the OS "cannot be installed on this computer". I've tried everything -- NetInstall, trying to install off the DVD directly, even trying to do a fresh install (and not an upgrade). Nothing works.
Is there any way to find out what's causing the install to fail?

Usual triggers: not a retail disk for Mac OS X Server; using a platform-specific disk that arrived for another box. Software too old for the box, though that's not an issue here with Xserve2,1 on 10.6. Wrong low-level disk partitioning (as differentiated from volume format). Problem with the disks themselves.
Usual approach: if this is a retail Snow Leopard Server DVD disk, nuke and pave the disks from the installer; via Disk Utility. If these are Apple disks, call Apple. If they're "compatible" disks, call whomever you got them from and start to work toward a swap.

updated my mac to mountain lion 10.7.8.3 and now my app store, mail or facetime won't open. Also, I am not longer able to play videos through firefox. I tried downloading the combo for mountain lion and it refuses to install saying that I need to see developer. Whenever I try to open my appstore, mail or facetime it says that the programmes need to be installed and might not be compatible with this version of mac operating system. Can anyone help me?

It's not a bad install of Mountain Lion. I've had the same thing happen to me, but it affected not only Mail, but a variety of other programs including iPhoto and MS Office, where I had to delete preferences, caches, and reinstall the OS as well as the program itself. I'm still having issues with Mail, so I've gone to another program.
Everything was fine upon the initial install. I restarted my iMac about two weeks after the install, and that's when the issues began to happen. I've reinstalled Mountain Lion twice, but the same issues arise.
As I mentioned above, you'll need to figure out which preferences are causing the issue, then reinstall the program, as a fresh reinstallation will do you no good unless you wipe the drive completely.

  • HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 4625e Refuses to Install

My printer is an HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 4625e (4620 series). Firmware Version: CAP1FN1451AR
First, this is what I can do with the printer:
Print internal ‘Test’ pages and reports.
Print documents in all applications from a wireless, networked laptop.
    Print documents using ePrint.
My computer is an HP Omni All-in-one Running Windows 7 Home Premium X64
The issue is I am unable to (re)install the printer on the HP Omni using either ‘Add Printer’, HP downloads or the installation disk.
    Hoping for a definitive solution.
Background: Just over a week ago I upgraded from Office Pro 2010 to Office Pro 2013. When I went to print I noticed the dfautl print was showing as One Note 2013. I selected the HP printer then hit print. I got an error message: Word Cannot Print this Document. There is no printer installed.
I tried to print using NotePad and an Adobe document (thinking it may have been Word related only). This did not work. I could print from any application using the Desktop. But, as noted, I can do so from the networked laptop.
On opening the Printers folder OneNote was set as the default. I changed the default to the HP printer. No luck. I was told it was not installed.
I ran Malwarebytes Premium and Microsoft Security Essentials to check for possible incursions. None.
I then tried System Restore. No change.
I then tried to repair the print program. No change.
I then uninstalled Office 2013. No Change.
I then tried the “Add Printer” function. No Luck. I was informed: “Unable to install printer. Some files are missing or incorrect. Reinstall the driver or try using the latest version.” (Screenshot 1)
I then tried to reinstall the printer. First as a straight reinstall then second after doing a complete uninstall using Revo Professional Uninstaller and an Advanced Scan.
This did not work, yet the printer is recognised as being on the wireless network during the reinstall process (Screenshot 2).
This is what I Cannot do: (Note: during any install attempt I disable both Malware Byes and Windows Security Essentials. I have also attempted installs with the Firewall turned OFF.)
Cannot reinstall on the system. It refuses to allow a wireless network installation even though it shows on the install screen (Screenshot 2).
If using ‘Add Printer, it says files missing or incorrect (Screenshot 1).
If installed using HP Download, I am able to input IP Address but it does not show the copmupter name. It says either. “Computer’s Network Name: Retrieving’ OR ‘Computer’s Network Name: Unable to Retrieve’ (Screenshot 3 & Screenshot 4 respectively).
When install fails, I get the screen asking to search for a solution (Screenshot 5) which then gives me instructions re a download ‘Helper Application’ (Screenshot 6).
After attempting to follow those instructions, the downloaded ‘solution’ does not work (Screenshot 7).
Instead of trying to install over the wireless network I have tried using the USB Install process. The printer then only installs as a ‘Fax’ Printer. On checking the Device Mager – Show Hidden Devices – it shows a ‘Multifunction Device’ with a yellow exclamation mark (!) next to the driver. On checking, it says I need to reinstall the driver.
Any attempt to convert the USB connection (even though it only installs as a fax printer) to a wireless connection fails.

    Hi @jindo53,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
Thank you for a very well detailed post! From what I have read, I understand that your HP Deskjet Ink Advantage 4625e is refusing to install either as a Wireless or USB connected printer, on Windows 7. I am sorry to hear this, but I am happy to help!
Please take a look through this guide, 'Unable to Find Printer' Error Message Displays for the HP Officejet 4620 e-All-in-One and HP Deskje....
Tips to avoid wireless connection issues
The following tips can help prevent wireless connection issues. You might need to experiment with each of these tips to secure a successful wireless connection.
Move the product, the computer, and the access point (router) closer together.
Remove any metal objects that are between the product, the computer, and the access point (router). Objects such as refrigerators or metal bookcases can interfere with a wireless transmission.
Move any device that emits radio signals farther away from the HP product. Devices such as microwaves and cordless telephones can interfere with wireless transmission.
Accept or allow any firewall pop-up messages that display during the software installation.
If you connect to a virtual private network (VPN), temporarily disconnect from the VPN during the HP software installation (see your VPN software for further details).
If you have MAC address filtering enabled on your router, you will need to add the HP product's MAC address to the address filter list. You can find the MAC address on the Network Configuration Page. Follow instructions for your router to add the address.
If that does not help, please try the following:
Uninstall the software. Uninstalling the Printer Software.
Clean boot the computer. How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
Disable any Antivirus programs. Disable Antivirus software.
Disable any firewall programs. Turn Windows Firewall on or off.
Create a new user account. Managing User Accounts and Logins (Windows 7).
Reinstall using the HP Printer Install Wizard for Windows.
If still unsuccessful, proceed to back up your files, and reinstall Windows 7.
Hope this information is helpful, and thank you for posting!

    What exactly means "refuses"?
This is the message which comes up if I try to update (from the Help menu) or re-install my licenced copies of CS6 or Photoshop Elements 9.
    “We've encountered the following issues
Installer failed to initialize. Please download Adobe Support Advisor to detect the problem”
    Get Adobe Support Advisor”
    OR
on trying to open PhotoshopCS6 I get this message:-
“Adobe Application Manager required to start your trial, is missing or damaged.
Please download a new copy of Adobe Application Manager from http://www.adobe.com/go/applicationmanager_uk”
When I follow these instructions and try and start up/install or update Photoshop CS6 I get the same messages all over again. This has been going on since Tuesday afternoon and I am anxiuous to resolve the problem. For several years now all this has worked perfectly through your website and I cannot understand what has changed.  Once I cancel these messages the products themselves seem to function OK. When I attempt to use Adobe Update Manager I get the same messages as above. You will see that my products are properly licensed and up to date. Have you any solution?

  • Unable to install headless Xserve G5 from DVD/CD: sa_srchr doesn't show any

    Hi,
I am trying to install a Xserve G5 with a new OS X Server 10.4.
It has no graphics card installed.
I booted the Xserve from CD/DVD (Service/LED1). I have another Xserve G4 at the same Switch with a "real" IP. There is no DHCP server in the network. I suppose the Xserve G5 uses a self-assigned 169.254.. address. Therefore the headless G5 is in a totally different network than the G4.
sa_srchr (performed on the G4) does not find any "ready and waiting" Xserve G5...
I tried to configure the other Ethernet card in the G4 for DHCP (thus hoping it will get an 169.254..-address as well) or trying to set it manually to (let's say) 169.254.0.123 (netmask 255.255.0.0).
Nothing of that helps... sa_srchr does not find anything.
Pinging the Bonjour Broadcast IP does not return an up and running IP, just down hosts.
    What solutions do I have?
Can I just install OS X Server using the target disk mode? (How would I set up the Network (IPs) and root password in that case?)
Or do I need a PowerBook which I can attach to a spare Switch (which won't be attached to the network), attach the G5 to the same Switch and then hope that sa_srchr will find anything?
How should sa_srchr normally work? Which IP do I have to set on the Mac that is running the search?

    A couple of points.
First, since sa_srchr uses multicast (assuming you're using sa_srchr 224.0.0.1), it doesn't matter what IP address the host and remote server have. It should find them anyway.
The commonest issue I've found with sa_srchr is when using multiple NICs. Are both NICs on the active XServe in use? This seems to cause a problem - almost as if sa_srchr is looking out the wrong NIC. Can you disconnect the second NIC while you run this, or run sa_srchr from a machine that has only one NIC?
Also, on the new server, make sure you're only using one NIC there. Even if you plan to use two once the machine is setup, just have one NIC (en0, the bottom one) connected to the switch during this phase. This avoids similar issues with setup running on the wrong NIC.

  • Adobe Reader X refuses to install - indexing service filter daemon

I have closed all applications, but Adobe Reader X refuses to install, saying that something called "indexing service filter daemon" is open.  How do I get around this?

This is how I got around this install issue:
    During install with the Indexing Service Filter Daemon message still open;
    1) right click on My Computer
    2) select Manage
    3) double click Services and Applications
    4) right click Indexing Service
    5) select pause
    6) in the Adobe X install message window, select Retry
It will have you reboot after install and it should automatically restart the service that you just paused.  If not, repeat the steps and select Start instead of Pause.
    Hope that helps.

  • HELP: Compressor 3.0.2 Update refuses to install.

I needed to install DVDSP CONTENT so I used FCPS2 Installer Disk. Unavoidably, ALL apps were re-intalled before the content loaded. So I downloaded all the app updates. All updated fine except Compressor 3.0. The 3.0.2 Update refuses to install. And, Compressor refuses to fully start-up.
    There is a Receipt PKG for Compressor 3.0, 3.0.1, 3.0.2, plus Qmaster_Frameworks.pkg 3.0 and Qmaster.pkg 3.0
Removing 3.0.2 doesn't allow either Compressor 3.0.1 or 3.0.1 to install.
    1) Any idea what's wrong and/or a simple way of fixing?
    2) Is there a way of Installing Compressor 3.0 from the Install Disk WITHOUT returning all the other apps to their original state?
< WHY on earth does the Install UPDATE versions that are obviously newer with older versions? >
    3) Will Pacifist auto-remove the current version of Compressor or do I still need to TRY to do this manually?

Interesting. Check one thing for me. Go to your Control Panels, click on Software Update, and see if "Download important updates automatically" is enabled. If not, enable it, then click the Check Now button. This will download the file to your drive, and you should see it.
If you do this, and the file still isn't there, then I'm stumped as to why it isn't downloading. Like I said, I had this same issue on both my computers, and the same solution worked both times.
Let me know how this turns out.

  • How to install 1 xserve and 2 xserve RAID ??

Hi i'm new at fiber world. Could anyone tell me how can i install 2 xserve raid on 1 xserve? In this moment i have 1 Xserve and 1 Xserve RAID conected directly with 2 fiber cables. I need to buy other xserve RAID but how can i conect it? i have to use a fiber switch? and if this is correct wich switch u recomend?
A link with schematics will be apreciated.
    Thx in advance.

In the sense that you can plug everything in and it will auto-negotiate and things will just "show up" then yes it is like an ethernet hub.
You will probably have to do some simple configuration of the Sanbox via their admin tool but as long as you're only using the Xserve/RAID it should be easy because you just have one zone and all full speed ports. The QLogic docs are good, if basic, and the admin tool is pretty straightforward - especially for an easy set-up like this.
The way that fibre is not like ethernet (just so you're aware) is cannot have two Xserves plugged in sharing the same drives. This will work if you try it but horrible data corruption will eventually occur. Fibre is like ATA or SCSI and you can't share it between host computers in it's raw form. Just to be clear.
    Good Luck,

  • Application Manager refuses to install

    Hi,
I'm having a substantial probelm with the Application Manager (AAM). A few days ago I performed an automatic update of Audition, but the progress got stuck at around 50%. A few minutes later the computer totally crashed and after a restart Windows 7 had to repair the entire disk. To my surprise I had to find out that the AAM removed itself from my hard disk. I mean, it wasn't there anymore and the alias icons were blank.
As suggested in the help I downloaded AAM 6.2, but it refuses to install. I also cannot deinstall the Creative Cloud applications for a new installation, because this action requires the AAM which can't be installed. It's a devil's loop. The guy from the Adobe help chat advised me to download the new AAM 6.2 and install it. That's really funny, as I've told him twice that this isn't possible. Additionally, he refused to help me, because my OS isn't in English.
Any suggestions? I'm really grateful for any help! Thanks a lot in advance.
    -T.
    EDIT:
I've been able to fix this issue on my own. Really took my some time and tricks...

@tsn69- Glad to hear you were able to fix the issue.
For another person reading this post, the steps I provided in this post http://forums.adobe.com/message/4726312#4726312#4726312 may help. You want to run the Adobe Cleaner Tool first followed by installing the Adobe Application Manager from one of the links provided.

  • TS1702 Every time I try to install an app of the App Store. The iPad refuses to install it and it just says waiting... For hours. Is there a way to fix this problem?

I am unable to install any applications from the App Store. Every time I try to install an app the iPad refuses to install it and it just says waiting... For hours. Is there a way I can fix this? If so, how?

I have posted these suggestions many times in the iOS forum and a number of these things have worked for other is the past. Maybe one of them will work for you.
Tap the "waiting" icon and see if you can pause it. If it does pause, then tap it again and see if it will resume. If that works, repeat the same steps for each "waiting" icon.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>iTunes & App Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.
You can also try deleting the waiting icons - tap and hold down on an icon until it wiggles - the tap the X on the icon to delete it. Then try to download again.
You can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered.
If all else fails, download the updates or the apps in iTunes on your computer and then sync the content to your iPad.

  • Aperture update refusing to install

Although i have Aperture 3.3 installed the update to 3.3.2 refuses to install with message "Aperture 3.0 or later is required to install this update."  This is the reason what App Store ist not listing Aperture when an update is available.
What could i do to overcome this?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6)
that cannot be your system, if you are using Aperture 3.3?
Have you moved Aperture from the Applications folder to a subfolder or renamed it? To install the update, aperture must be named simply "Aperture", without any additions and located in the Applications folder on your System volume.

  • ATI install latest xserver,mesa,drm

I have migrated over to the "lighter" side of things, and already I love this distro. However, w/ my last distro (Ubuntu), I was able to get 3d direct rendering on my Radeon x1650(rv535), using the latest OSS driver (xorg-video-ati 6.9) using mesa 7.1 and xserver 1.4.99. As well I had installed the latest drm modules.
As I have migrated after a catastrophic hardware failure, I didn't have much time to do research about the "Arch Way". I apologize if I seem Ignorant in my knowledge of Arch Linux, I am still at the bottom of the "Bell" so to speak.
Anyway, here is the Install guide I followed to help me get through last time:
    http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9951
I am aware that the easy-drm-modules-installer is made for Ubuntu, so I'm not sure how to get the right modules installed.
    What about mesa 7.1?
As well, would I (make install) the xserver updates(from the orig. tarballs) from the edgers repo, or use packagebuild (or something else)?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I am currently researching and pondering this daunting task myself, I figured I would make a post and see if anyone had any info that could make this easier.

So far I am at a complete loss. I downloaded all the source tarballs from: http://ppa.launchpad.net/xorg-edgers/ub … ol/main/x/
I started with the libdrm-2.3.1, which gave no errors on installation. However when I went to install mesa-7.1.0, ./configure gives me an error that it depends on libdrm-2.3.1 and I only have libdrm-2.3.0. WTH is up with that.
I'm guessing I didn't install the drm modules right, here is the readme:
    DRM README file
There are two main parts to this package: the DRM client library/interface
(libdrm.so) and kernel/hardware-specific device modules (such as i915.ko).
    Compiling
By default, libdrm and the DRM header files will install into /usr/local/.
If you want to install this DRM to replace your system copy, say:
    ./configure --prefix=/usr --exec-prefix=/
    Then,
    make install
To build the device-specific kernel modules:
    cd linux-core/
    make
    cp *.ko /lib/modules/VERSION/kernel/drivers/char/drm/
(where VERSION is your kernel version: uname -f)
    Or,
    cd bsd-core/
    make
copy the kernel modules to the appropriate place
    Tips & Trouble-shooting
    1. You'll need kernel sources. If using Fedora Core 5, for example, you may
need to install RPMs such as:
    kernel-smp-devel-2.6.15-1.2054_FC5.i686.rpm
    kernel-devel-2.6.15-1.2054_FC5.i686.rpm
    etc.
    2. You may need to make a symlink from /lib/modules/VERSION/build to your
kernel sources in /usr/src/kernels/VERSION (where version is `uname -r`):
    cd /lib/modules/VERSION
    ln -s /usr/src/kernels/VERSION build
    3. If you've build the kernel modules but they won't load because of an
    error like this:
    $ /sbin/modprobe drm
FATAL: Error inserting drm (/lib/modules/2.6.15-1.2054_FC5smp/kernel/drivers/char/drm/drm.ko): Invalid module format
    And 'dmesg|tail' says:
drm: disagrees about version of symbol struct_module
Try recompiling your drm modules without the Module.symvers file.
    That is rm the /usr/src/kernels/2.6.15-1.2054_FC5-smp-i686/Module.symvers
file (or rename it). Then do a 'make clean' before rebuilding your drm
    modules.
I followed the linux-core process, was I supposed to use the BSD? I know arch has some BSD likeness, but this is new to me.
Also, I didn't  run configure to replace the system copy <-- very well could be my problem!
I don't get any errors and it is loaded, but how do I check the version?
    [stephen@ephraim ~]$ lsmod | grep drm
    drm 137964 0
    agpgart 28244 2 drm,amd64_agp
    [stephen@ephraim ~]$
My guess is pkg-config(mesa ./configure) can't find the module I loaded, because it wasn't installed with the package manager. I'm not sure though.:(

  • G565 refuses to install latest ATI Drivers :(

My G565 have the integrated Radeon HD 4270 graphics accelerator.
I use EXACTLY the correct drivers from AMD by selecting the driver from this page:
    http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx
For some reason it does install the new Catalyst Control Center just fine, however it wont install the new display driver, it stays at the old 8.760.0.0 from 2010-07-19... I've even ran driversweeper and done complete uninstalls...
Why does it refuse to install?? Are we reallly stuck at using the latest driver from Lenovo which is outdated???

I want the greatly improved catalyst control center + some performance improvements and fixes.
One is that graphics acceleration in FF is improved, also apparently  sometimes FF4-5.x caused the GPU to run very hot in earlier driver releases.
I would have hoped for some serious help here  but I guess I have to find some registry hack or another way to install new AMD/ATI drivers from now on...
Lenove must've blocked it from completely installing... I can't see why since it's just the pretty common HD 4270 (4200 series) onboard (shared Memory) graphics chip in the RS880M Chipset!!
FULLY supported by the drivers from AMD!
