10.6 server bad superblock.

It's a remote system no physical access. I have booted into safe mode. Filesystem is still corrupt. Can I put /sbin/fsck_hfs -fy /dev/disk0s2 into rc.common and force the issue? I was thinking of inserting it right after rc.common set the paths.

A common trigger for slowness in the Server Admin tools is a DNS server or DNS configuration error.  To test for that, launch Terminal.app (Applications > Utilities) and issue the following (non-destructive, informational-only, no changes performed) command:
sudo changeip -checkhostname
enter an administrative password when prompted, and then read through the output, and (down near the bottom) whether it reports changes required, or if no changes are required.

  • Mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on floppy

    Since I switched to kernel 2.6.1, I can no longer mount floppys.
    mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/floppy/0,
    or too many mounted file systems
    I thought some filesystems might be compiled wrong, or the fstab is not OK, but I can't find any mistake.
    If some prof could have a look, I am sorry for the long quotes.

  • [SOLVED] Bad superblock error message when partitioning in GPT

    Greetings- I'm trying to install arch on this old 500 GB drive using gpt, and when I get to the third partition table and try to write it to ext4 I get "warning, had trouble writing out superlocks"
    I did a little searching around google and from what I gathered you can correct bad superblocks if you have a running system, but since this drive is empty.... Do I have any solutions or do I have a brick? Just curious. Like I said its an old drive I didn't even know I had. 500 GB though it'd be a shame to trash it.
    Thanks.

    I don't recommend using badblocks on a disk that's failing SMART tests. Frequently, bad blocks accumulate over time, so if you've got (say) 100 bad blocks today, you might have 159 bad blocks tomorrow, and then the disk will stop working entirely a week later. It's just not worth the risk to your data to try to eek out a little more life from the disk. An exception might be for some test purpose, like doing a test installation of a new OS -- but even then, I'm not sure it's worth the effort of using badblocks before the installation. IMHO, it's better to use a virtual machine for such a test installation, assuming you've got sufficient disk space.

  • Bad superblock on /dev/sr0

    I'm trying to mount a Pink Floyd CD manually, just so I can browse its content but it doesn't work:
    $ sudo mount -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /mnt/cd_dvd/
    mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
    mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sr0,
    missing codepage or helper program, or other error
    In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
    dmesg | tail or so
    $ dmesg | tail
    [ 1370.241820] isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=sr0, iso_blknum=16, block=16

    What could be the reason for this? I am able to play the cd in VLC without problems. Could this be related to some scratches on the cd surface?

    That is true. For end-users this is a convenient feature when using an OS because then they don't actually need to know the difference between Audio CD formats and CD-ROM formats - which in this case I was not aware of before now. Reading the wikipedia article on the Rainbow Books did clear things up.

  • Bad superblock on root slice

    I booted up my machine yesterday, and got dumped out at the grub prompt. I booted from the CD, and after some investigation I found that the disk partition table was ok, and the Solaris VTOC appears to be fine as well. I was able to mount and access the /usr, /var, and /export file systems, but slice 0 with the root file system has a bad magic number in the superblock.
    As I see it, I have a few options. newfs slice 0 and restore from the last dump, trust what newfs says about the alternate blocks and fsck away, or try to repair the superblock using fsdb. I figure that since the root file system is probably unrecoverable, I may as well try using fsdb. At best I might be able to recover the file system. At worst I learn about using fsdb before I newfs and restore.
    Any ideas for things I may have missed, guides to using fsdb, estimates of my chances for success?

  • Reformat external hard drive - "bad superblock", "magic number wrong" error

    i was just given a brand new 300GB USB hard drive, however, as it came NTFS-formatted, immediately after plugging it in for the first time, i fired up Disk Utility, and attempted to format it with UFS.
    The problem arose when the progress bar just sat there for an hour at a constant 5%. Assuming the program had stalled (it hadn't...though it would have sat there indefinitely), i quit Disk Utility, opened it back up, and again attempted to format the drive--only this time, almost immediately the program output:
    BAD SUPER BLOCK: MAGIC NUMBER WRONG
    LOOK FOR ALTERNATE SUPERBLOCKS? yes
    SEARCH FOR ALTERNATE SUPER-BLOCK FAILED. YOU MUST USE THE
    -b OPTION TO FSCK TO SPECIFY THE LOCATION OF AN ALTERNATE
    SUPER-BLOCK TO SUPPLY NEEDED INFORMATION; SEE fsck(8).
    i opened up Terminal and tried manually to find an alternate superblock, to no avail.
    fsck -b32 /dev/disk2s3
    i've been unable to find any solutions to this issue online, but i'd really like to use my drive i've heard that this problem has to do with hardware that's about to fail, however, this is a brand new drive, and i'm quite certain the error is as a result of the aborted reformat operation.
    Does anyone know how to remedy this? Thanks in advance.

    Hello TheRedWino, and a warm welcome to the forums!
    Hmmm, what kind of Case/Chipset does it have?
    Have you tried erasing it with Zeros one Pass?
    "Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
    Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the Erase tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume, then choose MacOS Extended Journalled, select the Partition tab.
    6. Click Erase & look for Security Options. choose Zero 1 pass."

  • Unable to connect to SQL Server : bad return code or status

    When attempting to connect to a server running Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2 the following error message is returned.
    Error Connecting to Database
    A SQLServer request resulted in a bad return code or status but no error message was returned.
    The client is pointed to another similar server running Windows Server 2008 R2  and SQL Server 2008 R2, a connection can be made successfully.  Looking at the registry both servers have the same version of MDAC 6.1.7601.17514.
    UPDATE
    The SQL Server Error Log records the following information.
    Message
    Length specified in network packet payload did not match number of bytes read; the connection has been closed. Please contact the vendor of the client library. [CLIENT: 10.1.30.106]
    Message
    Error: 17836, Severity: 20, State: 17.
    It seems like the client is actually reaching the SQL Server but failing to login.

    The version of MDAC on the server doesn't matter.  It is the client version of MDAC/WDAC that is used.  Do you know what SQL Server API the client application is using (i.e. ODBC, OLE DB, SqlClient, JDBC, etc)?  You might try a simple connection
    test from ODBC data source manager or script.
    I think this may be error message from a Sybase client.  That would explain a lot.

  • Server to server "bad-instance" error while registerHook

    Hi LCCS Team,
    I have tried server to server integration last day and got successful in setting up amf server and required endpoints for lccs.
    while i was trying to register hook i got this error
    com.adobe.rtc.util.RTCError: bad-instance      at com.adobe.rtc.account.AccountManager.checkStatus(AccountManager.java:907)      at com.adobe.rtc.account.AccountManager.subscribeCollection(AccountManager.java:470)      at com.adobe.rtc.account.AccountManager.subscribeCollection(AccountManager.java:453)
    i really have no idea where i went wrong.
    this is the code i invoced
    AccountManager am = new AccountManager("https://connectnow.acrobat.com/xxxxxxx/");
            am.login("[email protected]", "xxxxxx");
            am.unregisterHook();
            am.registerHook("<a real URL>", "12345"); //getting error at this point
            am.subscribeCollection("myAtulMeeting","JaiHOCollection");
    i have dig in to lccs.jar source in  com.adobe.rtc.account.AccountManager.checkStatus(AccountManager.java:907)
    but i am unable to find the cause, please suggest some pointers.
    Thanks
    Atul

    Hi Raff,
    Thanks for the reply.
    i have checked with the room URL, and yes i terminated it with / , i corrected it.
    In debug mode i got to know that registerHook is working fine, but the subscribeCollection is having  issues.
    am.subscribeCollection("myAtulMeeting","JaiHOCollection");
    while in debug mode i found that error happens when checkstatus call is made in subscribeCollection method,
    in AccountManager class
    inside checkStatus method
    Element status = (Element) result.getElementsByTagName("status").item(0);
    String code = status.getAttribute("code"); //code gets the "error" as string
    Any  thing else i am missing ?
    Thank You

  • Renamed Root Server/Bad Scan Directory path

    Hi,
    I had to rename one of my NetWare 6.0sp5 servers. This server also holds
    the ZFD3.2 database - it is a Root server with workstations attached. The
    problem I have now is that the <ServerName>_ZenInvService object contains a
    pointer to the wrong location for the 'Scan Directory Path'. It contains
    \\old_servername\volume_name\zenworks\scandir and it cannot be changed even
    though there is a browse button that lets you browse to the correct (new)
    server name and path.
    The exact error message, upon trying to browse/select the correct
    servername and path, is:
    "Unable to change the server name for the scan directory path."
    Also (of course) when I attempt to start ZFD with ZFDSTART.ncf the Sybase
    database manager loads just fine but the java apps do not. They appear to
    load but the status screen stays blank instead of showing the connection to
    the database. There are no exit codes since nothing exits.
    Any ideas on how I can fix this? (Besides a complete re-install of ZFD.)
    Thanks

  • ZFS on solaris10 panics HP Proliant server BAD TRAP page fault in kernel

    When installing Solaris 9/10 on a HP Proliant DL 380 G5
    the system resets when choosing ZFS as a root file system,

    The CPQary3 device driver is the latest version 2.3.0,is neccessary because of the presence of a HP Smart Array E200 Controller

    When choosing UFS as a root file system, the OS installs fine.
    But when zfs is used to configure a zps pool after the installation, the system resets again
    Has anyone experienced the same problems ? knows how to solve this ?
    Solaris installs fine when choosing UFS as a root file system.

    What do you mean after the driver is installed?
    S10/U9 has the Compaq Array3 driver pre-installed. No more adding it to the jumpstart tree or "adding a driver" necessary.
    I have setup several DL360 G3's and G4's which use the same controller.

  • DHCP server bad address issue

    Hi,
    I'm having an issue with ip address conflict or "bad_address"
    I've checked for rogue dhcp server with wireshark. One issue i'm having is that the mac address of the device getting the bad_address issue on the dhcp server is only 8 characters. There is no such device like that on my network. This would be occuring every
    other week. Removing it solved the problem, but how do i find the culprit of this problem?
    Thanks.

    What confuses me, is that it works fine at one site with all of your Windows 7 machines, but not the other. So something up with the DHCP Server? As I asked before, is it multihomed? If RRAS is installe on it, that constitutes multihoming, too.
    OTH, Windows 7/Vista's DHCP Lease behavior is a bit different than XP. And keep in mind, we can't discount server side issues, yet, or we can look at this as a combo of the facts. In addition, if anything is on a VLAN, then that's another layer of "something"
    else that we need to look at.
    Anyway, here are my notes on Windwos 7/Vista DHCP lease behavior differences:
    Windows 7 DHCP Lease Behavior is different than Windows XP upon startup
    DHCP Client Behavior
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/networking/archive/2009/01/29/dhcp-client-behavior.aspx
    If the DHCP client obtained a lease from a DHCP server on a previous occasion, and the lease is still valid (not expired) at system startup, the client tries to renew its lease.
    If, during the renewal attempt, the client fails to locate any DHCP server, it attempts to ping the default gateway listed in the lease, and proceeds in one of the following ways:
    •If the ping is successful, the DHCP client assumes that it is still located on the same network where it obtained its current lease, and continues to use the lease as long as the lease is still valid.  By default the client then attempts, in the background,
    to renew its lease when 50 percent of its assigned lease time has expired.
    •If the ping fails, the DHCP client assumes that it has been moved to a network where a DHCP server is not available.  The client then auto-configures its IP address by using the settings on the Alternate Configuration tab.  When the client is auto-configured,
    it attempts to locate a DHCP server and obtain a lease.
    As a workaround, you can force a Windows Vista or Windows 7 DHCP client to keep the old DHCP lease by adding registry key “DontPingGateway” if connectivity fails, see the resolution in the KB article below:
    Windows Vista does not keep its DHCP IP address if a DHCP server is not available (works for Windows 7, too):

  • Bad load arguments supplied when starting up the Reports Server

    Dear All,
    In report60\server\<filename>.ora
    Following were the contents :
    maxconnect=20
    cachedir="d:\Oracle\806\REPORT60\server\cache"
    cachesize=50
    minengine=0
    initengine=0
    maxengine=1
    maxidle=30
    security=1
    englife=50
    We chnaged it to
    maxconnect=20
    cachedir="d:\Oracle\806\REPORT60\server\cache"
    cachesize=50
    minengine=1
    initengine=0
    maxengine=5
    maxidle=30
    security=1
    englife=50
    We imideatly got result we checked it put it on live application server.
    Everything was smooth but next day we got calls/email from user saying report were slow. when we checked the windows process on application server rwmts60 was occuping 50% of memory so we killed that process. We restrarted the report service but was unable to restart.Then we saw the report log as follows :

    then we changed back our ora file to
    maxconnect=20
    cachedir="d:\Oracle\806\REPORT60\server\cache"
    cachesize=50
    minengine=0
    maxengine=1
    initengine=0
    maxidle=30
    security=1
    englife=50
    And restarted the service which restarted suceesfully.
    My question is i had changed maxengine=5 and minengine=1 on 20- JUL-2008 around 16:00 .Did this happen b'coz of this 2 parameters.
    Kindly advice.
    Thanking You in anticipation.

    Hello Mahendraji,
    Thanks for your reply.
    I may ask some basic question please accomodate me.
    <<$RACLE_HOME\reports\conf\apple_report.conf>>
    I have Application server 9i version 1.0.2.0.0 (isuite).
    I have installed in D drive
    In this drive a folder d:\orcale is created.
    Inside of this i don't have any folder called "reports"
    i have folder called "806"
    \\webdb-01\D-Drive\Oracle\806
    Inside of which i have folder "report60"
    \\webdb-01\D-Drive\Oracle\806\REPORT60
    Inside of which i have folder "SERVER"
    \\webdb-01\D-Drive\Oracle\806\REPORT60\SERVER
    In which i found "Rep60_WEBDB-01.ora" , "Rep60_WEBDB-01.log" and "cgicmd.dat"
    and 2 folders "CACHE" and "security".
    I am confused as you said that the file name should be Rep60_WEBDB-01.CONF but i have Rep60_WEBDB-01.ora are they one and the same . If yes is the extension b'coz i have older version of 9i i.e 1.0.2.0.0 (isuite).
    if no where i how i can search this .
    This Rep60_WEBDB-01.ora file doesnot have parameter "engineResponseTimeOut" if i add it will it work.
    Your explanation regarding "engineResponseTimeOut" is clear.
    Maximum Time taken by our report is 20 minutes. But sometimes when report hangs or SQL takes more time than normal due to the environment so the max time might change to 25 or 30 minutes in such a case should we keep it at 45 minutes to avoid any unneccessary termination.
    <<Note:
    It is always better to run batch reports on a separate server with different engineResponseTimeOut values. Do not submit interactive and batch reports to same server.>>
    If i create a seperate application server how can i send reports requested by user to batch in this seperrate server.
    What should be the criteria of report to be redirected to seperate server?
    What do mean by "submit interactive" and "submit batch"
    My interpretation is when we click on submit query button it is "submit interactive" is it correct.
    I am not clear about "submit batch"
    I know there might be some silly questions but please do accomodate.
    Kindly advice.
    Thanks.
    Regards,
    Devendra Shelke

    Can someone help me in solving this problem
    Thanks
    Kris

    I solved this problem by commenting the 8.1 SP4 patches i applied in 8.1 SP2
    WebLogic Temporary Patch for CR211812
    WebLogic Temporary Patch for CR235145
    Once i commented the above patches in the CLASSPATH.
    The issue is resolved.

    Hi Suresh,
    You might want to post this onto the
    weblogic.developer.interest.61beta.general newsgroup. The XML developers who
    monitor this group don't know much about the license processor.
