Wintel Box has the movies - running iTunes 10.6
3 AppleTVs can not play an entire movie ( hosted on either a MacBook Pro 10.7 running iTunes 10.6 nor a Windows 7 Desktop running 10.6 )
Either Home Sharing back to either computer running 10.6 will play an entire movie - stalls and stops
When I bring the movie or TVShow to an iMac running iTunes 10.5.3 everything works
all computers / appletvs have had multiple resets
Has anyone found fix to Windows 7 running iTunes 10.6 using Home Sharing since it appears to be non functional ( here at least ) ?
Note : iTunes 10.5.3 worked yesterday on all computers / devices

DVD Drive will not play ANY movies

I seem to have the standard drive for the 15 inch MacBook Pro (bought less than one year ago), but it simply will not play ANY movie DVD I've tried. It whirrs and whirrs but nothing happens. I've tried multiple movies and none have worked. Yet it works fine with software cd's and loading on of new programs, and burned CDs with pictures display just fine. I checked the System info on the drive and notice that the last line - which is media - had a 'no' next to it. Is it not turned on or programmed to play movies??? If so, how do I activate it? Did you activate home sharing in both your iTunes and ATV?
Also try signing out of the ATV (Apple ID) and signing back in again.

I've tried restoring the TV, updating my iTunes - nothing is working. It is definitely not playing on my computer.

Sign in to your iTunes account settings on the computer (click on the AppleID top right if you're actually signed in).

This has been an ongoing problem for me too. With my iPad 2 I buy a tv show or rent a movie and it does not show up in the Video App. This is very frustrating (= very upset Apple customer) You spend money to see something remotely, wait along time to download it, potentially incur or use precious minutes with your limited data plan and in the end can not view it. Additionally, the entire process has some severe usability issues. Why do you have to go to another App to see your movies. When you click purchase you should be first presented a download time bar and then either as it is in the midst of being downloaded be able to start watching it and/or after it has been downloaded you should be provided the movie to view it. Not bumped to the landing page of the iTunes App. how stupid is that. So you are there at the landing page for iTunes. Your first inclination is to try to navigate within iTunes to see it. If it is a,TV show that you rented your first inclination is to go to the TV show section. Then form there you will like deduce that you need to go to Purchases. but when you click Purchases it instead takes you first to Music purchases. Then you might see or realize that there is a,TV show tab in the Purchases section, so you go there and and as opposed to showing you a chronological list of most recent individual purchases is defaults to a list of full seasonal TV show purchases, so then you see the seasonal show and it show an iCloud butont to download then entire season, hmm that would suck to then download the entire season, use all your minutes and then not be able to view any show cause even thoses don't show up in the Apple video App. I mean come on this really terrible, TERRIBLE useability.
So I have gone to the Apple Video App and nothing shows. I have done a search from the Apple search you can access when swiping right from the initial page of App icons. I actually see the TV show name listed from the title name search I do. And indeed it shows an associated Video App icon but when I click it momentarily (split second looks to be loading the video App and then crashes? And takes me back to the first screen of App icons.
So I simply can not watch any show with ITunes.
Netflix on the hand make the entire process a one click experience.

IMac will not play DVD Movies

I have a first generation iMac G5 (OS 10.4.11) with a "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-825" drive which plays CD and software DVDs fine, but it will not play DVD Moives, burned or commercial. When inserted, they spin for a minute then I get an error message "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." But it should be.
I have tried updating firmware, but the update said I did not need it. Also tried deleting the "com.apple.DVDPlayer.plist" as suggested in an earlier post. Nothing has worked.
I had this problem years ago and have updated the system since but DVDs still will not play. Does anyone know how to fix this or download a new DVD driver?

I do have the exact same problem, but even worse: my superdrive won't even read a software DVD. I would like to upgrade to Leopard (I bought the upgrade DVD) and I can't read it. Is there a way either to make the superdrive work again by myself or use another computer's drive for this purpose (upgrade to Leopard)?

My blu-ray will not recognize dvd-r, will not play any dvd or burn a disc. I ran all the diagnostic test and it says disc scratched, dirty or hardware problem, (Hardware Problem).

To give you some precise answer it will be interesting to know which DVDs are not readable. Meaning of word 'some media' is to general and not helpful to understand the problem.
Satellite A30 is pretty old notebook model and it is possible that ODD functionality is not good anymore. You can try to clean the lens.

IPhoto will not play portrait movies

hi all.
uunfortunately I am unable to play any movie that is in portrait mode. Anyone ever heard of this before? Landscape videos play fine.
ALso. If I import them into a new library I get an error staying the file is I recognizable.

Thanks for the assistance. Yes, we definitely can open the video directly. It seems my iPhoto is having some serious trouble. As of about two weeks ago I have been unable to load any movies into the software at all. Usually this all comes directly from my iPhone; which I have never experienced trouble from. All of a sudden with the new iPhone 6 any video I take will not import. Any which way I import them, from GoPro flash card, or iPhone 6, or directly from Finder, nothing .... lame
It turns out now that any video shot in portrait will no longer play. I have tried everything to resolve this ...
1. all four options in iPhoto repair
2. new library
3. different/new user profile
4. terminal command to rebuild cache file
5. upgrade to Yosemite
6. upgrade to iPhoto 9.6
still nothing. I don't have any QuickTime plugins, no Piran, or anything else .. I'm completely stumped.

Quicktime 7.2 will not play Quicktime Movies

Ironic isn't it.
I recently purchased Sony's Movie Studio and it required a new(er) verson of Quicktime to import QT movies. So I download 7.2 ( i had 7.01, if I remember correctly) and installed it. I can now import QT into Vegas for editing. Fine. Great.
BUT, and here is the ironic part, Quicktime will no longer play Quicktime movies! Not .mov, .mp4, nothing. Zip. Zilch. But it will play some old avi files for some reason. All I get is the audio and flashing striped colors. Until 7.2 I could load any .mov, avi, mp4 file and edit them without a problem. (I forgot to mention, I had QT Pro) I was also using Any Video Converter to convert old home movies I'd burned to dvd to the mp4 format, and Quicktime worked flawlessly to open them too. Up until this "update" I've been very happy with the performance of Quicktime.
Now, nothing but frustation and the online Support hasn't pointed to a solution. And yes, I have updated my Dell PC running XP to all the latest service packs.
Any ideas? If I delete 7.2 I could probably re-install a version of 6 Pro that always worked, but then Vegas Movie Studio won't work. Kind of a Catch-22. Thank you for any help.

It has helped some who have had this problem. Try dragging the QuickTime webplugin folder to the desktop in case you need to put it back and see.

Safari will not play .mp4 movies

I upload a .mp4 movie to my server and Safari cannot play it. It displays a mass of numbers and such.
I found an article online that says to add a .htaccess file to my server at the, infamous, "root level"... what's this guy smokin'??? Could this possibly work? Has anyone had a similar experience with Safari not playing .mp4 videos? (They play just fine in QT Player)

If you are having problems playing MPEG4 video in Quicktime 7.4 (and Apple are aware that some users have had such problems) you should carefully check in
/Library/Quicktime and
/Library/Internet Plug-ins and
Home/Library/Quicktime
to check whether you have any third party plug-ins that are not completely up to date.
Current versions of Flip4Mac and DiVX and Perian do NOT cause failure alone or in combination. However the one SPECIFIC extension that ALWAYS causes the failure alone or in groups is 3ivxMediaImp. All other 3ivx extensions DO work. Remove only that ONE SPECIFIC extension.
Please try this and see if it fixes your problem with QT Player, the QT Firefox Plugin, and iTunes not playing MPEG4 files (including mp4 files).
Older 3ivx and DivX components are often incompatible with new QuickTime versions and are, in many cases, obviated by component packs like Perian.
This is not the only explanation for issues with MPEG4 file playback in QuickTime 7.4 and later, however. The issue with videos from democracynow.org and others, for instance, is the result of that content not complying with MPEG4 standards (namely that they use bogus track dimensions). QuickTime had previously ignored invalid track dimensions but this was changed in order to support properly authored anamorphic content.
The recent update to QT 7.4.1 has fixed a number of issues but some problems are unavoidable when working with non-standards compliant content. The standards are important for many reasons including keeping hackers from manipulating improperly coded web pages.
However, there is a workaround (also the basis for why those files will still play in iTunes): there are a few ways to trick QuickTime into ignoring the invalid track data. For instance, rename the files .3GP and they'll show up just fine.
Post back if you want a list of the plug-ins you should have in order to play pretty much anything in Quicktime.

ITunes Will Not Play Entire CDs Unless Error Correction Switched Off!

I was having problems with iTunes in that it would only play 2 tracks on a CD before iTunes froze and had to be Force Quit.
On the advice of a poster on this Apple Discussions Forum I went into: iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>Importing and unchecked the "Use error correction" button. Voila, my iTunes will now play complete CDs.
But surely this is not right? It has been suggested to me that this is a software issue and that I should carry out an archive and install of Leopard.
What do you think?

what numerical and text codes are you getting with it? (ie 0x[zeros/letters/numbers] CAPSANDUNDERSCORES)

It was recently confirmed that the PS4 will not be compatible with 3D Blu-Ray movies at launch but COULD be a part of a future update. It will do 3D games but not movies.

AppleTV will not sync purchased movies or TV shows

ATV will not sync my previously purchased movies or TV shows. I have no problems syncing personal MP4 identified as moves or TV, all music, podcasts and photo's. I haven't made any (non-iTunes)software or hardware changes. Problem began about the time of the latest iTunes release, but I'm not sure of the cause. I have followed all WC's suggestions: Updated all iTunes and ATV software, de and re-authorized, moved .xml file out and back. Even reset factory settings on ATV.
Regardless, I get the "cannot contact iTunes Store" or the "check firewall port 8 whatever". Well, I have no problem getting to the iTunes store and they take my money easy enough...my ports are wide open, so what gives?

I am also having this problem. TV shows seem to be ok. 1 purchased movie has synced. I have a total of 4 movies. the one purchased movie is showing in the ATV devices section of itunes in the purchased and purchased on apple tv folder. it also appears in the movies folder on itunes. The other 3 movies do not show in the purchased folder or purchased on ATV in the ATV folder in itunes. They do appear on the ATV device however. I have read some posts indicate that movies cannot be synced from ATV to Itunes when purchased on ATV. I do not believe this to be true and because one movie is on itunes and ATV in itunes and I am able to sync back and forth with ATV through itunes. I have had a hardware change to my system with the Airport extreme but it is still letting me sync the one movie back and forth. It seems odd that the other movies are not showing up in my purchased folder in itunes.
