10.7-10.8 HD space used

Hi,
Just upgraded 4 servers form 10.7-10.8. One of them is our Mail server and oddly the HD space used has jumped a fair amount. Is this normal?

I've checked previous systems and library/server/migrated and it's not these directories.
Got Disk Inventory X to do a scan but that doesn't seem to calculate files which don't have permissions.
Can anyone offer any advise on this issue?

Amount of space used

3 Part Question - ( 1 ) Using my G5 with iMovie 6.0.3 I have downloading video from a camcorder. I checked the amount of free space left on the hard drive before downloading and it was at 30GB. With just 7 minutes of video downloaded and no extra editing, music or other done to it, it shows now only 23 GB left to use with some more to enter on the same movie.
How can that be for only 7 mins of video .... When putting a store bought DVD onto the computer to view , it only takes up about 7.4 GB of space on the hard drive for a 2 hour movie .... what am I not understanding ?
(2) The iMovie shows the amount of time and the remaining space allowed to use , but is there somewhere I can find to actually see the amount of space used to see if the math is correct or there is something else wrong ?
(3) After I read the response to the above .... and possibly all is in working order ..... is it possible then to use a back up hard drive to make the movie if I don't have sufficient space on the hard drive and then burn it to DVD afterwards on the back up hard drive or do I have to copy it back on the computer if there is enough space. ?

Manus - Wrong word - Should have spelled "Script".

writes a script on what frames to be shown.
Not really understanding that .. if I cut away 53 mins and then emptied the trash ... should it just use the 2GB of space for the 7 mins I have on I movie .... And what's a "manus " on what frames to be shown .... ?
No it doesn't help to empty trash. iMovie is a non-destructive editor. All that has been imported
stays untuched in it's media folder. UNTIL - If You delete ALL - every single frame of an imported
clip. Delet this and then empty trash. It's gone. BUT if You use only one frame - full import stays.
To save space one often - export out needed material to a new tape.
Delete the old import project and starts a new one with material from the new tape.
3) Back HardDrive to use to make a movie with iMovie .. Your Reply > Has to be Mac Os Extended formatted - Most bought as DOS/FAT32 formatted ? Sorry that's over my head .....
If You buy an external hard disk it has to be organised in a way called "Formatting" and this is most
often done for Window PC computers. This way doesn't work when using it with a Mac and especially
when doing Video works.
To find out how it is formatted:
• Connect it to Youre Mac via FireWire (avoid USB/USB2)
• Select it when it showes up on desktop
• Press [cmd-i]
Now You can read how it is structured "formatted".
If it is empty - You have not start to store anything on it - You can re-formatte it with:
Apple Disk Util tool (in Applications/Tools)
Hopfully this has brought any light into your questions.

Storage values under about this mac displaying incorrectly, but amount of space used IS correct. Any ideas?

I noticed recently that the "storage" under "about this mac" is displaying incorrectly. It doesn't show the correct values for my photos, videos, and audio files. It classifies this data under "other". I have been searching all over the internet, I went to the Apple genius bar yesterday and they recommended I re-install OSX. I did and it still shows up incorrectly. They were baffled, said they never really came across this issue. I have tried re-indexing spotlight, that didn't seem to help.
The amount of storage used IS correct. It just doesn't show up under the correct categories in storage, under about this mac. Also, the computer seems to work fine. No real issues. It's a mid 2012 MBP. 500gb hard drive. Most recent OSX is installed.
I DO NOT think it is local snapshots, cause my backups category is small and the amount of space used and free is correct. I have downloaded omnidisk sweeper to confirm this.
I have seen a few posts on here and around the web referring to this, but no real answers. I have also reviewed Pondini's info on this to no avail.
Does anyone have any ideas?!?!

I had installed a version of parallels with windows 7, but deleted it. Would parallels be causing my computer to index incorrectly? I I used appcleaner to delete all the parallels files so I do not have it anymore.

You don't need iTunes for that. Simply connect the iPhone to the PC where it will be recognized as a camera. You can then select the photos you wish to transfer, transfer them, and delete them.

Time Machine backup not a large as amount of space used on harddrive

I just bought a new iMAC and Time Capsule and completed my first backup. In Disk Utility it shows that there is 151 GB of space used on the hard drive. The space used on the Time Capsule is 131 GB. I searched this topic and can't find it addressed before. Did Time Capsule not back up all the Hard Drive?

Thank you for your prompt response. My hard drive and Time Capsule drive both show that 150 GB are used so I guess that is settled. When the Time Capsule changed I don't know. In regard to the Time Machine Buddy, I followed the instructions. To copy I pressed the C key, the M key, and the D key then pressed the C key again. It works a lot better to use the CMD key C approach.

Measuring percentage of space used by type of content?

I work with a weekly publication where we try to keep advertising content to a maximum of 70 percent for every 20 pages. Is there a way, through InDesign, to have the program track specific kinds of content (ie: advertising) by the amount of space used for that content on a page by page basis. For example, would it be possible to embed some kind of code or character in specified areas of the page, and then perhaps highlight that page and have the software indicate what percentage of the page has that "coded content" ???

Space used is double what I have in library

In my library, I only have 3.61 GB worth of stuff. When I plug my ipod in, the space used it about double that, 7.29 GB. Is it saving everything twice, and is there a way to fix this? Thank you so much for any help!
I forgot to add that I did just use my ipod to transfer my music from my computer to a new computer. Could this be causing the problem?

This is most likely the cause. This may have happened: you added the music on the iPod to the computer and left it on the iPod, using more space. Then iTunes added all that music back onto the iPod.
Either way, if the music is on your computer, restore your iPod...
Restore the iPod
And then reupdate your music onto the iPod. It should be using the correct amount of space.

Does saving a finished iMovie also to Theater (on iMovie 10) duplicate the space used on the computer (for example if I save the finished movie as a file on my desktop and have it save to Theater (did I just double the space used on my computer: file on desktop plus the file in Theater)?

No. But after the MP3s are created and you are satisfied that things went OK, just delete the WMAs manually and say "Good Riddance."
You can use an MP3 in multiple players, but you need to turn off any features that automatically change or move files, since one player will change something that messes up the other:
In iTunes, that means go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced and uncheck "Keep..." and "Copy..."
In Windows Media Player, that means go to Tools > Options > Library, and uncheck everything that starts with a verb such as "Rename...," "Rearrange...," etc.

How to reclaim the space used for LOBSEGMENT, which is growing fast

OS RHEL v4
Envi RAC on ASM
On the production, in one of the schemas (PR_AA) on the tablespace PR_AA, i have
1) a table (Table1) which has 3 columns of CLOB datatype. Current size of this table is 65 GB.
2) Two LOBSEGMENTS 85GB + 25GB =110GB
3) about 10 Indexes of Table1 are of 15 to 17 GB
Table1 is being purged on a daily basis, but still the tablespace is growing like anything ( now the over all size of the tablespace is itself 190GB).
What i need is,
Q1 . Ways to reclaim the purged space from the table1.
Q2. How to shrink the table/ tablespace? Is it possible to do it online without impacting the users/business?
Q3. How to shrink/maintain LOBSEGMENTS space, that is , how to control the size or reclaim the space from LOBSEGMENT after the daily purge on the Table1?
Quick help is much appreciated and thank you in advance.

Reading your question a bit more in detail, I doubt whether you are using Win32 API GetDiskFreeSpace function (for which my previous post is the solution) of Programmer's Toolbox GetDiskSpace function.
With reference to the second one, it works even with disks larger than 2GB but you need to use the proper formatting code to display the returned value. I updated my example to show total free space in the debug output window and added a comparison with 3GB value using UInt64TypeCompareUInt from the Programmer's Toolbox.

Why so much space used by back-up?

I am trying to get rid of useless things on my macbook and it says that I have 24 GB of space used by back-ups. What exactly is this used for and is it necessary? I can't figure out what it is backing up and where it is stored on my hard drive.

Sounds like "Local Snapshots" to me.

The Local Snapshots get deleted over the time or if the diskspace is needed.
It's an automatic procedure.

Adding a image in webcenter spaces using Image Layout Component

i was trying to add a image in webcenter spaces using Image Layout Component , The following steps i did
I placed some images in Webcenter server location .(c:/images)
put the folder location in Image Source ( Image Layout Component Properties) as file://c:/images/top_image.jpg
But the image did not display in WC. if i put some web url its working fine, so i just wonder whether we can point to a file location as the image source.

Start up and shut down is slow after erasing free space using disk utility?

I went to Disk Utility, clicked Erase, and then "Erase Free Space." When I saw that it was going to take 1 hour and 30 minutes, I tried closing disk utility. It wouldn't let me exit, so instead I pressed "Skip." But when you hover over the "Skip" button it says, "Erase all data and reformat the disk."
I'm wondering if the fact that I pressed the skip button has anything to do with my computer shutting down/starting up A LOT slower now. If so, what can I do to fix it?

Just wanted to give an update. I called Apple and apparently, you shouldn't empty the free space using disk utility while you're logged in. I had to insert the Installations CD and press the "C" button while my computer restarted, and used Disk Utility from there. My start up and shut down speed still isn't exactly the way it was before, but this definitely made a difference.

Can we create a Portal without Spaces using JDeveloper ?

Is it possible to have Portal without Webcenter Spaces (collaboration) component for WebCenter but I do require a portal with the Administration functionality found in the WL_Spaces managed Server. For instance, securing pages/portlets, LDAP/OAM integration, exchange integration, UCM integration, configuration with WSRP portlets on WL_Portlet and analytics configuration with WL_Utiltiies. Can we create a new portal (one without Spaces) using JDeveloper and create a managed server?

Yes you can!
WebCenter is more than just WebCenter Spaces.
WebCenter Spaces is just one part, another part is the WebCenter Portal which is an application in JDeveloper. You might want to read my tutorial: http://www.yonaweb.be/webcenter_tutorial/introduction it explains how to build such a portal.
All the connections you make in the enterprise manager, can also be configured in JDeveloper so you can also use UCM, mail server, portlets and so on in WebCenter Portal application in JDeveloper.
It is common practice to create a new managed server on your domain to deploy the custom WebCenter Portal application. You can also manage the connections to the different service from within the enterprise manager, just as you do with spaces.
