10.7.2 and still no optical output???

Hi everyone,
I'm running Lion 10.7.2 (Build 11C74) and I still have the same problem with my optical output. Everytime I connect the cable I got in System Preferences/Sound:
Name: Headphones
Type: Headphone port
No red light, no sound!
I think I've tried almost all the solutions from the forums, but nothing is working.
Does anyone has any ideea how to get my optical output back? And without downgrade.
Tnx,
Andrei

The DHCP settings have come back, but how to manage NAT at the latest Server version 2.1.1?
The Apple document reads,
"Important: Do not enable Internet Sharing if you have configured custom settings for the DHCP service in OS X Server. Any existing DHCP settings will be overwritten if you enable Internet Sharing in the Sharing pane of System Preferences."
If so, the new DHCP settings will be useless if you use Internet Sharing (NAT).
How to use NAT and DHCP server at the same time on a Mac OS X Server 10.8?

  • Optical output doesn't work unless the HDMI is connected to a TV?

    Hi,
I'm running ATV input an amp using the optical output.  When I stream music, nothing happens until I turn the TV on, and then the optical output then starts to work and music plays out over the optical output.
Is this by design, or is this an issue thats being addressed?
    Jeff.

    hualon wrote:
Audio coming out of the audio output is most certainly a conditional event.  It is conditional upon the device playing some media that features an audio portion (and yes, being plugged in).  The device is playing sound?  It should come out of the sound hole.  If it's playing video then I expect it to come out of the HDMI port.
Why else would the smegging hole be there?
Winston believes he's serving some kind of useful purpose by arguing nonsense in threads on the 4.4.x audio issue, when all he's doing is diluting them and hindering people who are looking for solutions. I've pointed out to him multiple times that the documentation doesn't say anything about electrical extension cords, so by his "reasoning", you can't expect them to work, either. He's never acknowledged the silliness of that line of "thinking". The main thing he doesn't understand is that the documentation for the ATV is not a NASA specification or something, and it is not surprising it does not try to exhaustively describe everything relevant to its use in thousands of mind-numbing pages. Documentation is always supplemented by things like support documents (e.g. the Apple documents that mention fixing the audio output bug when the TV is off, and the use of DVI, his other nonsense issue I'm aware of) and user experience based on sensible expectations. I would have been surprised if Apple had documented the TV-less use of the ATV even in the specifications, because then they'd have to document that you still need a TV to set it up and make configuration changes as necessary, because it doesn't provide a browser interface. It's just easier to ignore the capability, because its availability is implicit in the design of any device that provides the digital audio port in addition to the HDMI port, and people who want to use the ATV without a TV can figure it out for themselves. It would be beyond stupid for it not to work, because that would mean you couldn't use the ATV for audio with a stereo system that lacks HDMI inputs, without always having a TV connected and turned on. The ATV is documented as an Airplay device for streaming iTunes audio from devices like the iPhone, iPod Touch, and PCs, and for that, there's no reason to have a TV connected and turned on. It's a common sense expectation that it should work with the TV off or without a TV. It goes without saying.
FYI, Winston also believes that using the ATV with a DVI device can't be expected to work even when the DVI device supports HDCP and 720p, because the ATV manual doesn't mention DVI. He will assert this wrong thing every time someone asks about it, and he will reject refutation via Apple support documentation and the hdmi.org FAQ every time it's presented to him. He will imply that HDMI to HDMI is guaranteed because it's documented, ignoring the hundreds of messages written by people with HDMI problems. He seems to be incapable of understanding that the jack on the target device is irrelevant to how well the ATV and the device follow HDMI and HDCP standards, which is the factor which determines whether or not they work together. I must have explained this to him a dozen times over the last few months, and the audio issue, too, but nothing has ever penetrated.
Anyway, I hope you've found this Winston documentation useful. It's a waste of time trying to talk with him on the audio and DVI subjects, and you can refer to my posts over the last few months for numerous examples of the futility.

  • TS4107 I have to use the optical output to my receiver for my surround sound ( it does not decode HDMI). After updating the software on my Apple TV the optical no longer works. The HDMI to my TV works and provides sound to the measly TV speakers. WHY?

I updated my software as "recommended" and my optical output is not working anymore to my receiver and thus no surround sound. My HDMI to the TV still provides the picture and sound to the TV. My receiver only uses optical and was fine BEFORE the software was updated. How can I go back to the prior software or fix this? My Apple TV is the earlier 720P version. I have tried restarting on the Apple TV and then unplugging and reinserting all plugs to no avail. It provides no optical sound on Netflix, Youtube and other selections but does via HDMI only to the tinny TV speakers. ANY IDEAS?

GO to your Dolby Digital settings, and toggle the options.. Auto, On, Off. That worked for me, and a few other people.

  • Mac mini and optical output problems

I have just purchased a new Apple Mac Mini connected it to my Tv via HDMI and now am having problems getting the sound working.
I have connected via optical output and the cable itself works and I can see red lights at either end.
When plugged into the Mac the 'optical output' is greyed out(it does change when plugged in)
When the volume control comes up it has a circle with a cross through it.I have tried what i consider most 'normal' things to try. Currently doing a update of the Mac software. Please Help, PLEASE!

So you have connected via a Mini-Jack -> Toslink cable from the Mac Mini to your receiver? You haven't specified what cables you are trying to use. My guess from the red circle with a X through your digital output is it may not like the cable you are trying to use.
I have the above described setup but I am able to select Digital Output in Sound Preferences. The volume control is greyed out for some reason but does not have a circle with the cross through it so I just control the volume via the receiver itself. iTunes still allows me control of volume, as do other video/audio controls in the web browser etc, it's just the main OS X volume control that is inaccessible.
    Strange, but liveable.

  • Mini Analog and Optical Output

I would like to use both the optical and analog output from the Mini. I would like to use the Toslink to connect to my stereo and the analog to connect to my TV. Is there an adapter/connector which will do both or is there an alternative solution? Your assistance is greatly appreciated! --John
Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Your issue actually has two parts: hardware and software.
Hardware: Is there any such thing as an audio cable that has both analog and digital optical connections at one end and splits so you can have both coming out the other end of the cable and going into your stereo? I've never heard of one, so chances are you'll have to use analog or digital with your headphone port and then find a second hardware option to output the other audio signal. This can be accomplished with a single AirPort Express. As you've discovered, if you have a second audio hardware solution, like a USB audio adapter, you can't select both outputs at the same time in the Sound System Preferences. This leads us to software...
Software: Is it even possible to tell the Mac OS or an application playing audio to output both signals at the same time? Yes, it is with an AirPort Express, AirTunes and iTunes. I don't think I'd call the AirPort Express not "worthwhile" if it's a simple solution to your question. But, it's not available to other applications and I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone else here looking for the same thing. If I were you, I would seen Apple Mac OS X feedback and let them know directly that you'd like to be able to select more than one audio out option at the same time in the Sound System Preferences. My G4 Mac mini is connected to my stereo/receiver with an m-audio Sonica USB that has a digital optical audio out and I can't output that at the same time as the headphone port. So, there are other people with hardware configurations that would benefit from that option.

  • SB live! external. logitech-z680.Spdif output and Optical output , but get only 2

    Hi there,
I buy now a SB li've external.i use? Spdif output and Optical output .But i get only 2. voice
i dont get 5+ voice with Spdif output and Optical output .
    I wait your help.

But to use the receiver's DAC's you'd have to lose the accuracy advantage of real digital (i.e. the "better" sound). When you convert non-AC3/DTS sound to AC3/DTS, the conversion involves "perceptual coding," which means they throw away stuff they don't think you can really hear so that the signal can be fit in the same space as a stereo digital signal.
    It's also a relati'vely compute-intensi've conversion, and not a simple process.
Now, are you sure really want to do that?

  • Using internal Speakers and optical Output at the same time ?

    Hello,
is it now possible to use the internal Speakers and optical Output at the same time ?
Is this a software or hardware limitation ?
Every day im disconnecting the optical output. It can't be good for the contacts. I wont spend over 100 euros buying an external soundcard to solve this problem.
    Any Ideas ?
    Thanks ? best regards

  • No Optical output sig

I bought the X-Fi Fatality FPS sound card when I purchased my new computer. I use the optical output connection on my Front I/O panel to connect to my sound system. The sound system I use is the Logitech Z600 speaker system. When I turn my computer on for the first time, whether it be when i wake up or get home from work, I don't have sound. In my Z600 display I get a "No Digital Data" message. I contacted the computer company I purchased the computer from and they sent me a replacement Front I/O panel.
I replaced the panel and am still having the same problem I posted above. My Aux 2 and Mic 2 connections work fine. When I turn my computer on and get the " No Digital Data" message I unplugged my Optical Cable from the Optical Output connection and there is no "red light".
The catch is after my computer has been on for about 20 minutes I can restart it and the "red light" comes on and my Optical Output connection works fine.
What is going on thats causing this?

...normal HDMI signals include both audio & video but not on a Mac.
    This is partly true.
MacBook Pros with Model Identifiers +lower than 6,1+ (see System Profiler for yours) do not output audio through their mini-Displayports, so no mini-Displayport-to-HDMI adapter will convey an audio signal to a monitor, AV receiver or TV.
MBPs +6,1 and higher+ do output audio through their mini-Displayports or Thunderbolt ports, and if used with a mini-Displayport-to-HDMI adapter that supports audio, they will deliver audio and video via HDMI. With these models, don't buy any HDMI adapter unless it explicitly says it supports audio. If it doesn't say anything about that, it very probably does not support audio.

  • No optical output

    Hi,
My Apple TV was working fine. I broke my HDMI cable and replaced it. Now, I get no output from the optical audio port. There is the red light, but no audio is coming out from the receiver. I plugged the optical cable that was connected to my Apple TV into my PS3 and the audio works fine. I plugged the cable back into my Apple TV and still no audio. I've tried cycling the power on the Apple TV and performing a reset, still no audio.
Does anyone have any ideas? I'm at a loss here.
PS - The Apple TV is updated to the current software.
    Thanks,
    Ted

I returned the unit and received another one. The unit just went bad.
    Thanks!

  • OS X Lion - Optical output

Since i have installed OS X Lion, VLC doesn't not recognize the encoded output from my speakers (Logitech Z5450), no sound.
    And then the software crashes.
    Can anybody help me ?
    Thank You

Not so fast, Jamesy90, has the 10.7.1 release really solved the problem for you?
Your source, the VideoLAN Forums, now has a thread entitled,
New Lion Update (10.7.1) Still Doesn't Fix VLC Optical Out
I guess we'll all have to wait until Lion's next update?
It's hard to understand why Apple provides optical outputs (or jacks to plug our Apple earbuds into) so we can play the iTunes we buy from that company... and yet all that stuff doesn't even work for many of us at the moment.
Will people stop buying computers, earpieces, or music from Apple until the company fixes this?  I would feel kind of gypped if I bought a new 12-core MacPro for $5000, then found out the sound didn't work with its installed software.
Heck, I might just ask for my money back!

  • Digital/Optical Output

Just wondering since im not entirely 100% sure about optical outputs and those on the macpro, but is it always suppose to be shining red? its not bright at all but just wondering if it was normal for that to appear that way..
i had digital speakers connected to the macpro optical connection so i was wondering if its acting as if it were still there unless this normal for any macpro and optical in/outputs
    thanks in advanced.

    Hi AppleNewton,
when the mac Pro is on, the optcial digital out will always have this light red shining.
This is normal behaviour with every optical audio out port, since the red light is in fact the transportation medium for the digital signal.

  • Optical output issue

I have connected my ATV2 to my soundbar using the optical output and a standard toslink-cable. The soundbar is set to automatically identify the incoming feed. When streaming music through the ATV2 the soundbar correctly identifies the feed as PCM. It does this every time a new song starts, as it is probably identified as a new feed.
The really annoying issue is that the soundbar for no apparent reason also does this in the middle of a song. Each time it does the audio is lowered for about a second. The display on the soundbar says PCM as it does when a new feed is transmitted, even though it is in the middle of a song.
I have tried all the different settings on the ATV2 (e.g DD-On/Off/Auto), but nothing seems to help.
Could this be because of a substandard toslink-cable?
    Any other ideas?

Has no one else experienced issues with streaming music coded as PCM from the ATV2 optical out?
In my case, the PCM indicator remains on while non-AC3 audio is being played and no audio "drop-outs" occur. Since I don't use PCM encoded audio files, the only PCM file I have available is a pre-AC3 passthrough Diatonis multichannel file that plays as static on the TV2 but still plays correctly on the TV1.

  • No sound from optical output when using hdmi/dvi cable

I am trying to connect my apple tv2 to my B&O Beovision 7. I have used an HDMI to DVI cable which is working fine for the picture; but obviously DVI does not carry sound. I have therefore connected an optical cable to the digital optical output on the apple TV and put this through a converter to digital coax, which then goes in to the TV. I know the optical cable / converter set up works fine as I have tested it on my sky box and it works fine. But I get no sound from the apple TV - any ideas?

I hav exactly the same problem... Did you resolve this??

  • 16 days and still BT can't reset my IP Profile!

After getting one of the Hub 2.0 Type B in March I have been until June fault free. Gone are the constant random disconnects and the annoying flashing orange broadband light.
June 9th 2010 I rang BT and renewed my Broadband contract for 12 months. Was on Anywhere package but cancelled the BT Mobile and went to the unlimited Option 3, with the discount and saving from cancelling the mobile its down to £19.99 a month.
June 10th 2010 and thats the end of my constant 6 - 6.5mb download speed. IP Profile is down to 2000kbps. I ring the Broadband Helpline and its the usual plug into the master socket, change your filters etc etc etc. Then without even asking I'm put through to a floor manager. He checks my account and I ask is this anything to do with my broadband renewal the day before? Line goes silent. Apparently work is being carried out at my local exchange, everyone in the areas speeds will be a lot lower than normal but it will be completed by midnight on June 22nd. He'd personally call me on June 23rd at midday to check the speed has recovered. They carried out a line test and all came back as being fault free.
Asked a few local people connected to the local BT Exchange and funnily enough they have no Broadband speed reduction.
23rd June midday comes and goes, no call. I ring the helpline, there is no floor manager by the name I was given! Theres also no notes on my account from 10th June hence no call back. That's the next hour of my life gone down the drain having to explain everything again. I ask if the work at the local exchange has been finished. What work comes their response. So thats 13 days waiting for nothing. I'm told that my line speed is actually 5.6mb but when I explain the IP Profile is 2000kbps I'm put on hold again. Now onto another supervisor and re-explain yet again.  A line test is run and now 3 faults are found. I'm told that an engineer is needed and I'll be called by that department shortly. 2 hours later engineering team call. All the faults have been fixed, its a BT Network fault. IP Profile has been manually reset to my original 7150kbps and within a day all will be fixed. I'm told the case will remain open for 5 days, any problems just ring the normal helpline number. Within minutes my IP Profile is now down to 1000kbps. So much for improving things.
25th June and still IP Profile of my line 1000kbps. Needless to say its a nightmare trying to do anything at all online. Once again I ring the so called Broadband Helpline. Spend ages explaining it all again. I'm told my IP Profile will be reset again as apparently its not been done and someone will call back in a few minutes. They indeed call and assure me its all fixed. I wait an hour (supposed to have taken seconds to fix) run bt speedtester and yup IP Profile for your line is 1000kbps. Another call, another excuse as to whats gone wrong, another supervisor and another line test, yes now apparently lines faulty again. So engineer booked for next day Saturday 26th June. I explain I've made arrangements and I'm out all day, I'm told if I'm not in I'll be charged, I asked about changing to a different day, not allowed you gotta take what your given. Thats my plans for Saturday out the window. I'm told without doubt whatever the problem is the engineer will fix it.
26th June engineer arrives. He's been given no information about whats wrong. I explain it to him and he tells me if its the IP Profile thats the problem he cant do anything as hes just there to make sure the line for the broadband is working. IP Profile is sorted out by Internet Service Provider (BT). The bungalow I live in is pretty new and the master socket is outside. Apparently all new builds now have no master socket inside the building its all outside in a little grey box. He connects to the master socket and gets 5.6mb download speed. Tries inside and gets slightly less. Fair play to him he checked every single telephone socket and took the wires out and re-connected them. There were some spare wires so he put a master socket inside and plugged directly into that. 5.6mb download speed. Connected my Hub and ran BT Speedtester.

He tells me when BT ring once he's gone tell them to reset the IP Profile. He explained how I can get over 5mb but until BT change my IP Profile 1000kbps is the absolute maximum. BT call, I ask them to reset my IP Profile. No that can't be done, an engineer needs to come out and do that. They'll ring back with a date and time.
They ring back, we've spoken to engineering department and we can reset it. It'll take a maximum of 2 hours. This was at 5pm. They told me not to use the internet or hub until 7pm. Then press the restart button on the hub and all will be fixed. They'll call to check too. Did what I was told, then ran another speedtest and get the same results as above. They call back, its all been fixed! I ask are they sure I'm still getting the same IP Profile of 1000kbps. Low and behold oh its not been reset yet again! Now I'm told theres faults on the line but I can get 5.6 download speed. Yes i can, but not until they rest my IP Profile which is limiting my broadband to 1mb! I ask what happens now? Gotta pass it back to engineers to arrange another one to come out. I asked what the line faults were but he refused to answer.
16 days and still no closer to getting anything fixed. Apparently its in the engineers report which they have been sent to that my IP Profile needs to be rest but apparently that is something which BT are refusing to do.

Hi and thanks for your reply. 10am today yes sunday and the 3pm callback is 5 hours early. Myself and the rest of the people in the house are woken by BT, then annoyingly when I answer the line goes silent and the call is ended.
The noise margin is a weird one, some people say that mine means I'd have a slow broadband speed but then I actually have a decent speed with the noise margin what it is.
Anyway good news, this mini war with BT looks like its finally over.
