10.7.2 Better than Snow Leopard 10.6.8?

Hi. I downgraded to Snow Leopard but if are you happy with 10.7.2 or should I stick with 10.6.8 Snow for now? Thank you. I'm on a late iMac 2009 i7. Thank you in advance.
Gbu,
Alvin

10.7.2 fixes most of Lions bugs and adds back a lot of performance. To me it is now useable for day to day usage. No crashes, no slowing downs. So why not.
I have 4GB and run memory intensive software, it works nice for the most stuff.
just make sure to use Lion-compatible software ( most apps from 3rd parties have received updates ).
Before 10.7.2 performance was horrible and it was unstable.

  • Better renders in Leopard than Snow Leopard?

Okay, been following the issues between Final Cut Studio 2 and 3...
But is anyone finding the renders from FCP and Compressor of better quality in Leopard rather than Snow Leopard?
Comparing some Apple TV outputs from Final Cut Studio 3 in Leopard and Snow Leopard, it does appear to me that the previous system had sharper and clearer outputs, but I can't be certain since the clips are different material.
SL uses the new Quicktime X framework and Leopard uses Quicktime 7. There are some odd issues popping up with the X player that did not exist in 7, such as 4:3 movies suddenly turning 16:9 with the new player, the stair stepping renders when downsizing with Compressor, unable to adjust video tracks in the new player, etc.
So I'm wondering if there is a consensus as to the render quality in FCP and Compressor in Snow Leopard and Quicktime X. I just added a partition and installed Leopard there in case I choose to only edit in leopard.

Well, after some methodical testing, the results are in.
    Tested:
Final Cut Studio 3 in Snow Leopard
Final Cut Studio 2 in Leopard
Final Cut Studio 3 in Leopard
I began with a problematic DV clip from 10 years ago from Meissen, Germany using a small Sony DV camera in outdoor / dusk conditions with some bright lights blowing out the image.
In each test, used Final Cut Pro 3-way color correction, broadcast safe filter, and a Magic Bullet Editors "Epic" film preset. Set the timeline to render Pro Res 422 HQ, with all the best timeline render settings.
Exported with current settings, video only, self contained movie.
Into Compressor with the Apple TV settings, which in the Final Cut Studio 2 had to be set manually: 960x720 4:3 HD, H.264, 5000kbs (maximum), single pass, no audio, Frame controls set to progressive fields and all the best render settings. Added two compressor filters, noise reduction and edge sharpening. Aspect ratio was square.
Rendered on a Mac Pro 2009 4 core (8 cores virtual) 2.6, Qmaster cluster will all 8 instances. Viewed on a 42" plasma, Apple TV HDMI connection.
First test was in Snow Leopard with Final Cut Studio 3. Results -- dull output, fastest render at 17 minutes. Processors were hardly used, perhaps 300% in Activity Monitor.
Created a partition and installed Leopard, and Final Cut Studio 2. Same method above. Results -- crisp, tight output, slowest render at 30 minutes. All processors working 100% (800%)
Then erased and installed Leopard again, installed Final Cut Studio 3. Same method above. Results -- Dull output, medium render speed at 20 minutes. Processor activity was perhaps 400%, though jumping around the entire time.
    Conclusion:
-similar render quality between Snow Leopard and Leopard
-best render quality in Final Cut Studio 2
-faster but dull render quality in Final Cut Studio 3.
Still unclear whether the Final Cut Pro timeline renders look different between Final Cut Pro 6 and 7, but I will now only output in Final Cut Studio 2 for best results.

Since loading Lion, I've experienced much more instability than Snow Leopard. In particular, Mail crashes with regularity, full-screen apps seem to run slower and show the beach ball more often for longer, etc. I love the features, but I'm disappointed with the performance. Any help coming from Apple?  I've been sending them so many reports after crashes, that their file must be full!

Summoning max. courage, I did what you advised. Here is the result. What does this tell you? My Lion 7.2 (mid 2011 iMac) has several annoying glitches (which I have so far tolerated through gritted teeth) but none that have actually stopped me working.
BTW, I see several items involving CleanMyMac which I did not know I had. It is generally villified as a trouble-maker. Spotlight can't find an app. or a utility of that name. How can I get rid of what's there please? Just delete?

  • Why does Lion need to be rebooted more than Snow Leopard?

After upgrading to Lion I have noticed that I need to reboot Lion  more often than Snow Leopard. Is this just me or is this something others have seen?

I think this is just you. Nevertheless I would install the 10.7.1 update if you have not yet done so. This will improve the stability of Lion somewhat. But before you do that I would reinstall Lion. You may find this will improve things quite a bit especially if you upgraded from Snow Leopard. This will not erase the drive so you won't lose any of your files.
    Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • Is it possible to upgrade to higher than "snow leopard" directly?

My MacBook is not what it used to be. I've had it for four years now and have not upgraded the OS, so it is still on Leopard. Is it possible - and how much does it cost - to upgrade to higher than "snow leopard" directly? In which case, how do I do it?
    Thanks guys!

    Hi Maria,
Any newer  oSX is going to slow you down, but may be useful, but you need 10.6 & update it to 10.6.78 to go any higher.
You need to get 10.6 & update to 10.6.8 first to be able to buy it from the App Store & download it.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 4GB at least, more if you can afford it)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
        * DVD drive for installation
        * Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
        * Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and terms apply.
Which apps work with Mac OS X 10.6?...
    http://snowleopard.wikidot.com/
It's been pulled from the online store & Apple Stores, so you have to call Apple to buy it, last I heard.
Call Apple Sales...in the US: 1-800-MY-APPLE. Or Support... 1-800-275-2273
    Other countries...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57
You have to get 10.6.8 first to go even higher to 10.7 or 10.8

  • Why is Mac OS X 10.7 so much slower than Snow Leopard? It isnt smooth, applications are slow and most dont respond, and dowloads take hours, minutes.

Why is Mac OS X 10.7 so much slower than Snow Leopard? It isnt smooth, applications are slow and most dont respond, and dowloads take hours, not minutes.

Something is seriously wrong with your installation or you are critically low on RAM, like below 2 GB.
How much RAM is in your machine?
    Have you tried a Recovery?

  • Why is searching so much slower in both Lion and Mountain Lion than Snow Leopard?

Hi, I use Snow Leopard run on several Mac Pros to perform multidimensional time-lapse-imaging in our lab. Snow Leopard provides instantaneous (seconds) searching for folders containing the image sequences I require for analysis (distributed across 4 x 2TB hard drives- images are saved under the structure Time\Position, and for analysis I need to retrieve all folders with the same Position label). Lion and Mountain Lion either fail to search or are painfully slow. For analysis I use internal hard drives connected as external volumes via USB and I suspect this might be part of the problem, however the same setup works flawlessly with Snow Leopard.
This problem is becoming very frustrating as I can’t figure out what has changed, or whether I am overlooking something obvious. I installed Lion on my MacBook Pro over 6 months ago which is when I discovered this problem and had to reinstall Snow Leopard. At that time I had hoped that the next OS might provide a better search function for our use, but after some testing it seems the same. To search through folders manually takes over 10 x as long as using a simple search in Snow Leopard. Can anyone provide me any advice as to what might be causing this problem and whether there might be a solution? I’ve tried a few free searching tools from the app store, but these do not perform any better than searching in Finder. I would obviously prefer to be able to invest in new Macs in the future which run the most current OS without having to install Snow Leopard on them all (if this is even possible without future models without causing compatibility problems).
Many thanks for reading and for any advice you can give me.
    Oli

  • AEBS setup behaves differently on Lion Server than Snow Leopard

I have a small office setup with a Mac Mini Server running Lion server, a Canon Wifi printer scanner and a Canon USB A3 printer connected to an AEBS which is in turn connected to the buildings network gateway for internet access. We have 3 MacBook Pros (snow leopard) which connect wirelessly and the Mac Mini has an ethernet cable to the AEBS. Fairly simple and we just have 1 manual IP address for the server with the AEBS doing DHCP and NAT.
The issue I have is that if I change the AEBS settings using Airport Utility on a Mac Book Pro (the first time I just changed the DNS numbers to Googles free set and nothing else), I lose internet connectivity. I can get a partial connection if I also set the subnet to 255.0.0.0 (most websites load, but maybe 10% fail). Consistent and repeatable behaviour - every time I change the AEBS settings I lose the internet and the same websites fail to load.
I can get everything working again by using the Mac Mini server to change something on the AEBS, or just restart the AEBS. In which case I can use the recommended subnet mask of 255.255.255.192 and everything works as it should.
So my question is Why?? Does the Server change some background ports, or retain some link to the AEBS which stops it functioning if I use a non-server machine to make a change??
One bit of background: When I first got the Mac Mini Server I let it take control of the AEBS setup - It asked, and I let it, but this activated the 802.1x security and required a login to the server before access to the wifi was granted. A nice feature but the Canon wireless scanner/printer does not support this, so I had to stop this and set the aebs manually, so I could use my scanner again. Is it possible that some link has been retained from this?
I do have a full working setup now that I realise I have to use the server to operate the AEBS, but can anyone help with an explanation? It caused me a few months of partial internet access and lots of wasted time, so would like to know if there is a solution that would allow me to set the AEBS from any Mac on our LAN.
Thanks for taking the time to help!

Which services have been removed or depreicated?
You have to bear in mind that 'removed' or 'deprecated' only really means 'no longer bundled and supported by Apple'. Just because Mac OS X Lion Server doesn't ship with a foobar server that doesn't mean you can't download and install your own foobar server. It just won't be integrated into the Server Admin apps.
For example, Lion Server no longer ships MySQL Server. So download and install your own copy. It's not like the GUI apps gave you any control over the MySQL anyway, other than starting it up and controlling the network ports.
Likewise for print server. Some of the advanced print features such as quotas have been removed from the GUI, but you can implement them yourself.
Likewise with QuickTime Streaming Server, where the functionality is little more than a web service.
What features that have been enhanced?
Lion Server has simplified the setup of a server for small workgroups with simple requirements. If that's you then the whole experience may be enhanced since you're not swamped with a slew of options that you don't understand, or need.
I think a lot of people were also stymied by Snow Leopard Server because they expected the GUI apps to cover all the options, which was never the case.
So my original point stands. There is pretty much nothing you cannot do in Lion Server than you could do in Snow Leopard Server, it's just that it might not be supported by the GUI. Most serious server admins eschew Server Admin.app anyway since even Snow Leopard Server's admin app doesn't cover all the capabilities of some of the services, so you end up driving it via the command line anyway.

  • Lion's spotlight is wors than Snow leopard's

I'm very dissatisfied width the spotlight in Lion. When I type a word and click Show All in Finder, the opened window is regressed.
I can't set the width of the columns, set the location of search (e.g.: home folder / This Mac) or type of search: Contents or File Name.
This functions was very smart in the previous spotlight...
    Spotlight in Snow Leopard:
    Spotlight in Lion:

    Thanks. It was helpful.
But I still can't set the width of columns.
I've found a solution for set the type of listed files: With the + bottom, I can add a new search criteria. But it was better and easier in the previous verison of OS X.

  • Lion runs slower than Snow Leopard

We called about our very new Power Mac with 12 cores. We are running Maple on that machine, and less than 2.4% of one CPU is used for our calculations in the Lion 10.7.4 windows mode. The last advisor advised us to install Snow Leopard on the new machine.
We tried that as we had bought a family pack of MacOSX 10.6.3 some time ago and used that for two older machines. But the new machine complained that the installation can not be performed as this version apparently uses a fat binary.
We have also contacted Maplesoft, and they believe that Java and the GUI in Lion may cause the delay in the calculations. They advised us to run in Command Line mode using the nohup feature (In Terminal ending the UNIX command by &). We have tried this and found CPU use of 100% and even higher in parts where parallel processing was used. However,  running in the Command Line version of Maple is not attractive, as it takes away most of the interactive response with the program and produces results in linear form that are hard to read.
An old small 2 core PowerBook on which Snow Leopard runs is now our top machine, as long as the problem on the brand new machine is not resolved.
Do you have any further suggestion? We have wasted a lot of time and money on the new Power Mac so far.

Power Mac? Do you mean Mac Pro? Power Macs aren't capable of running anything higher than Mac OS X 10.5.8 Leopard because Snow Leopard and Lion are Intel-only.

  • Does Moc OSX Lion use more battery than Snow Leopard?

Ever since I have updated my MBP Early 2011 (2.2 Ghz Radeon 6750) to Lion, my battery life has gone down tremendously. I used to be able to get a solid 7 hours in (light workload ei. web browsing) and now I'm only able to get 3.5 hours MAX. I'm currently running 10.7.2 and the problem is still there. I have gone through around 200 cycles so it's not like 1000's of cycles or anything. Is this just me or are other people exeriencing the same problems? I plan on going back to snow leopard soon if there is no fix to this.

I have had my MBP since July 2011, and am at 22 cycles.
You must run soley on battery charge, almost never plugged in.
Are you running your battery very much down (10%-20%) before re-charge , or recharging at about 40%?
Running Lithium-Ion batteries almost dead create a "memory" that can make your MBP unchargeable.

  • Is Logic 9 better on Snow Leopard?

I'm running Logic 9 on Leopard and I'm finding it REALLY buggy.
Would upgrading to Snow Leopard help (and not all my plug-ins are 64 bit, so before anyone says I'll still have to run in 32...)
    ???

Actually that is what we did. I have a MacBook Pro
    Model Identifier: MacBookPro3,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 1
    Total Number Of Cores: 2
    L2 Cache: 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 800 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP31.0070.B07
    SMC Version (system): 1.16f11
    Serial Number (system): W8743016YAM
    Hardware UUID: 00000000-0000-1000-8000-001B63932B2A
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
and with 10.5.8 and a Presonus Firestudio Lightpipe with a GRaid mini drive it records 32 tracks just fine. So far the longest I have had it recording for is about 2 hours.
But the new MBP that I upgraded to 10.6.6 connected to the same hardware just goes for about 4 minutes and then says "disk too slow". Same thing with the Mini running 10.6.
Sadly now that Logic is part of the Apple Mothership they are certainly less likely to report compatibility problems with their own companies OS.
Pro Tools has their own update site that they have Approved and tested versions of OS updates that work with Pro Tools.
    Here is the Link. http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=352429&NewLang=en
I don't think Logic will have a site like this anytime soon.

  • Why does wifi takes longer with Lion than Snow Leopard?

My Macbook pro doesn't find my Airport nearly as quick with Lion as it did with Snow Leopard. Many times it will even jump over to another persons unlocked network even though my Airport is at the top of the preferred list of networks. It also shows a box saying that I am not connected even after I am connected, so then I have to click the box just to remove it. This is annoying as ****. Why is this happening? There weren't any similar problems when upgrading fron Leopard to Snow Leopard.

  • Anyone had success loading OSX later than Snow Leopard on an older (2004 model) iMac?

My iMac won't accept anything later than ver 10.6. Says I have to buy a new model. Which *** because my iMac works great.
Due to auto updates, my Safari and Chrome Browsers crash my old Mountain Lion operating system.
Can't I just install a new hard drive or something?

First of all running 10.6 at max is a 2006.
The 32-bit Intel Core Duo processor can only handle up to 10.6
Later models with Core 2 Duo can handle Lion, and up to Mavericks.
