10.7.2 Lion freezing / apps lock up, must hard reset 2-3 times daily

I've seen several posts on this -- oddly, some of them are archived even though there has been no resolution...
Would love to hear people's experiences and especially if you have a fix. Would REALLY love it if Apple would get off their duff and give us a working O/S.
Ever since upgrading to Leopard I've been having problems with system stability and, specifically, with lockups. Usually this starts out with a few applications get "hung" (beach ball). Again, usually, I can force quit them, restart and continue for at least a little while... but, it always marks the beginning of a downward spiral. The final straw seems to be when Finder locks up. Once Finder locks, the system becomes unresponsive overall and I can't shut down without doing a hard reset (either cmd-opt-power or, more often, just hold power until a get a hard reboot).
Some of the behaviors I'm seeing:
Apps start to lockup. Best option at this point is to quickly shut everything down and restart. On occasion I get a software restart if I'm prompt about it.
Finder locks up... forget it. Hardware restart is in my future... will generally try to save work, but it seems that anything involving disk / file system access is completely frozen.
About one out of two times, the login screen is very slow to appear (about a 2 minute boot), and then it fails to respond to my wireless keyboard &/or mouse. Sometimes the mouse works, keyboard doesn't. If I wait for 1-2 minutes, it will usually "wake up" and suddenly gets all of the input in one blast... but usually I lose patience, open up the laptop, do another hard reset.
Sometimes the screen saver won't release control of the machine (much like login screen). I can move the mouse, tap keys, etc., screen saver just keeps right on running blithely along...
On rare occasion, even the force quit panel (cmd-opt-escape) refuses to appear.
Of late, I've taken to launching Terminal on login so that it's available (because after the lockups start, I won't be able to launch it). Then, I can issue a "shutdown -r now" which, most of the time, seems to work pretty well. I hate doing a hard reset, always worried it will lead to a damaged file structure or lost work.
I've tried a number of fixed, including (at the height of it) reinstalling 10.7.2, which I did a few days ago. It made no difference at all... Also tried resetting NVRAM, etc. About the only folklore I haven't tried yet is switching to Chrome or Firefox. A lot of people are blaming Safari for all of this, so perhaps I'll try that next...
I'm suspecting that Time Machine is making the situation worse, but turning it off (and disconnecting the drive) does NOT solve the problem. It seems to go a little longer in-between system lockups. Same symptoms... apps become unresponsive, one after the other starts to beach ball, eventually the whole system locks up... I'm wondering if it has something to do with disk access, as posted in other threads. I've been trying to minimize disk access wherever possible, for one, just plugging in my Time Machine drive about once a day, let it backup, then unplug. Not really sure if it's helping or not though.
Currently, I'm running into this on average 3 times daily (worst day was 6 times, best day was just once, yay...) Yes I've been keeping track. By my count I'm also losing up to two hours a day, because the shutdown / reboot process is so baby-sitting intensive (and I have to do it several times a day).
Very, very frustrating. This is definitely the worst O/S release Apple has ever put out there. I'd like to go back to Leopard, but worried about the downgrade... arrrgggh. (Wish Mr. Jobs was still around, somehow I think he would never have tolerated this...)

Hm... what are the specific issues?
I launch iPhoto, use it a few times, and it hangs, requiring a restart of the iMac;
iPhoto complains that I am not connected to the Internet (when trying to display GPS data) when I am fully connected
Magic Mouse's connection drops about every 15 to 40 minutes of typing, often in this Discussion. Apple Care suggested that keeping my battery charge above 50% would solve it. It didn’t.(My batteries are Apple’s, as is the charger.);
When I return my hand to the Magic Mouse, the active window often suddenly scrolls up which looses the position of the pointer. This can cause problems in graphical apps like InDesign;
Mail's boxes display a small triangle every few days and will not send or receive, requiring Mail to be re-launched;
In Mail I cannot get pictures of people to appear in messages sent by them.
In Mail, stationery does not work properly. Neither of these two is an earth-shattering fault, but having been offered them I wasted a lot of time trying to get them to work.)
Time Machine three times over the last 1 1/2 years (OS 10.5 once and Lion twice) has complained that its HD is full when it is only ~1/2 full. A full reset on the last two did not cure it (I had not discovered Pondini's Full Reset until Lion). Pondini's symptom's and solutions did not match the error. Each time I had to erase and start again;
A couple of months ago, as a test, (after confirming my daily bootable backup of my system done by Carbon CopyCloner), I re-installed Lion from the InstallED.dmg, accepted the invitation to restore from TM, and upgraded to 7.2. All looked well except Mail displayed only the Header and first two lines of the body of messages, all the rest of the bodies were blank. Another major thing did not work after this re-installation (I can't remember the details now);
Carbon Copy Cloner can fail to find its Firewire backup HD about every 10th time (I have a daily schedule). The connections to the drive are plugged in OK but the drive is no longer mounted, whether the iMac has been restarted or woken up. CCC has been absolutely rock solid for years until Lion;
My Canon scanner (current driver, and it always worked before Lion), more times than not complains that it cannot start because it is in use elsewhere. I have to unplug its USB and re-connect.
In SystemPrefs > iCloud, a dialogue box said that Sys. Prefs. wants to use confidential info in my keychain. I press “Deny” and the box returns for ever until I force quit Sys. Prefs.
Software Update repeatedly tells me that a certain update is available but I already have installed it.
For those silly enough to install a new OS within a year of its introduction (not me: my iMac came with the wretched thing in it), some bugs can be expected, but not this many (at least in my opinion). All previous updates going back to 1997 have gone much more smoothly than Lion on my machines.
Although I am in a minority (given the huge number of sales of Lion – although MacWorld reports that sales of Lion are faltering), I am sorry to say that I have fallen out of love with Apple. I would gladly trade the elegance and the fancy features for a bit of “Works out of the box”, “It  just works”, “Computing for the rest of us”.

    Is there any other mean to get the mountain lion.
    I ve a 512kbps connection.

    I believe you have correctly identified your 512kbps connection as the source of the problem.
    The Mountain Lion download is more than 4 gigabytes.  You should try hard to find a much better, faster, more robust connection.

  • The image of my Macbook freezes and I have to Hard reset the system. What can I do?

    I have a macbook pro13" 2009 with a Bootcamp System Mountain Lion/Windows 7. If I work in Windows 7 I do not have any problems, but if I work with MacOS my Image freezes after some time, with quicktime immediately and I have to hard reset the system.
    Can anybody tell me, what I can do?

    I have already updated everything. But it did not help.

  • NEEDED: An App That Reports WHO is Resetting the Sleep Timer!

    If you've ever tried troubleshooting the problem of your Mac not going to sleep after the period of inactivity that you have set in System Prefs, you know what I'm talking about. I've had this problem off & on for years and I have it again now. I cannot for the life of me determine what is causing it this time. If only there was an app that would do nothing but create a short log listing the processes that are resetting the sleep timer, this problem would be a no-brainer, and would save me and a lot of other people a great deal of time & frustration.
    So I'm appealing to some Mac programmer out there to set aside this weekend to come up with such a utility, and I'll buy you a steak dinner.

    You are correct that things would be easier if it was automatic. However, you will generally find that it is a program with a built-in scheduler, such as a backup program or a video recording program, that left some code behind even if the program was trashed or removed from the system.
    As far as the PDP11, I don't think I could afford the electricity to run one even if I had one. The PDP11 is the first computer I was exposed to in medical imaging. I list it because every once in a while it draws out the truth from folks like yourself when they admit to knowing what one is.
    I think the first disk drives that thing used were housed in recycled washing machines using the old motors to drive the spindles.

  • Screen auto dims and after about one second, it sleeps. If you try to catch it and undid the screen during this time, it freezes and you have to hard reset.

    If you leave the laptop untouched, it will auto dim the screen.
    About one second after autodim, the screen will turn off.
    If during that one second duration, you try to undim the screen (by touching the touchpad, for example), the laptop will freeze and the only way to turn it back on is by holding the power button.

  • Bought an iPhone5 from Dubai a week ago and am having a constant problem with the touchscreen going haywire. It starts flickering and apps keep opening and closing. Did a hard reset, restore, numerous times, same issue. Anyone experiencing the same issue?

    The local retailer Sharaf DG needs 10 days to check the issue, not helpful at all. I spent more money to buy it from the retailer instead of the online store, and when I called Apple support they said they couldn't help me as I bought the phone from the retailer and not online. I'm extremely disappointed as this is my first iOS device and I've been told about how the iPhone is bulletproof. Guess i got a lemon.

    Ok Guys, got the device back. Service centre said they replaced the Display and touch panel. I would have preferred a new phone, but whatever. I just hope this does it and the problem is fixed. @Robo, I've also got a new nano-SIM from the carrier, so hopefully now anything that can cause the phone to go crazy, is fixed.
    Will update everyone in a week to confirm that the issue is resolved. Many thanks for everyone's responses.

  • Mountain Lion Freezes From Sleep Mode

    It seems like Mountain Lion is going into this "kernel" panic mode after I try to bring my computer back from sleep mode.  That thing everyone a lot of people talking about where it locks up and you can't force quit anything or do anything except watch the spinning beach ball and move between open applications.

    For what its worth I have tried removing all peripherals and see if it does it and it still does it.   This behavior doesn't happen to me at all while using the machine normally, only when I am coming back from sleep mode.   When I upgraded it didn't list any incompatible software.    Also I am noting that after a few trys I can relaunch finder but the spinning beach ball remains.   I was thinking that it was something like Windows Explorer crashing but it seems lower level problem then that.   There is something hanging and it doesn't seem like an application.   Seems like something in the OS, well, obviously because this wasn't happening before I upgraded.   I am just going to shut my machine down after I am doing using it for now so I am not hard resetting it four times per day.  Has anyone else seen this behavior?

    Okay, it has been over 30 hours since my iMac has done this.    It doesn't have that problem where it sits and spins any more.   My workaround is to go into System Preferences, Energy Saver, and slide the Computer Sleep all the way to NEVER.   I still put my display to sleep same time though.  And I also uncheck Put Hard Disks to Sleep When Possible.    That seems to have done the trick for me.    I have done nothing else to remedy this and my rig would freeze up on my three times per day so there you have it.    Hopefully they will fix whatever issue is plaguing the sleeping computers.   I know there are alot of them out there set that why by default.

  • Does anyone make an app / folder in which I can keep other apps locked behind a password?

    Are there any iPhone APPs / folders that I can keep other APPs locked up behind a password?

    This seems to be one of many shortcomings that Apple fails to address.  I don't know, maybe it is impossible to do this in the iOS?
    This was the main reason I dumped the iPhone, I still have an iTouch because iTunes is unmatched...but I bought an Android phone and avoided the iPad for a Motorola Android Xoom tablet.
    Android has more app locking applications than I can count!  Kinda important when you have your e-mail or your Facebook, or even your period tracking app on there BUT want your 6 or 9 year old to be able to play a game every once in a while and not have to hover over them in case they push the wrong icon.
    I just LOVE the responses from Apple Manics whose solution is: "Just don't let them use it!"  "Keep it away from them" and especially the one response I found on here "Why would you need to lock an individual app?" Just go to the Android market and see how many "app locker" options there are and how many times they have been downloaded.  This is a HUGE issue with Apple iProducts....every kid wants to play with it, with an App locker, a parent can be free to make them happy without them seeing your private stuff.

  • Apps reopening on hard reset (iOS 6 bug?)

    Ever since I have downloaded iOS 6 to my iPod Touch 4G, I have noticed it becoming rather laggy. I noticed that I had a lot of apps opened, so I closed those. To ensure that my device's performance improved, I decided to perform a hard reset (hold home button + lock button down simultaneously for a few seconds), and once my iPod Touch rebooted, I noticed that the apps I had closed previously showed up as being opened again. Is this a bug??

    i had teh same thing happen to be now and i jsut posted a new thread about it. but what i noticed is the following:
    if you close the opened apps and do a hard reset immedietly, you will find them reopened after the phone restarts. however, if you close them, wait for 10 minutes then do the hard reset, they will not be opened when the phone restarts. why this happens is beyond my understanding. it just does :S

  • Wi-fi freezes after Hard Reset

    I hard reset my Palm TX and then did a Hot Sync.  When I tried to connect to Wi-fi or switch radio on the screen goes white and freezes.  I did another Hard Reset without Hot Syncing afterwards and tried again with the same result.  Do I have a hardware problem or is this a known problem with the TX which I can resolve myself with the right information.  I don't want to have to spend a fortune sending it to Palm for repair if it is not necessary.
    Post relates to: Palm TX

    Hi KathrynB, Welcome to the Palm Support Community.
    Sadly, I've been hearing more of these reports of TX Wifi failures as the device ages...
    Perhaps about a dozen total, but there seems to be no solution to fixing the problem.
    Palm's repair prices are just silly.  If you wish to try getting it repaired, try looking into usedpdaparts.com or directfix.com.

  • Hard reset damage on freezing issue

    What is the likelyhood of damaging my iMac after about 40 plus hard resets and counting since update 1.1 has come out, freezing my computer.

    I believe hard resets (with the power button) are safe. As I understand it, the button generates a "non-maskable interrupt" -- causing the system to shutdown under processor control. That's very different from removing power by "pulling the plug."
    Even "pulling the plug" is very unlikely to cause permanent hardware damage, but it can lead to data corruption on the hard drive -- such that the OS will no longer boot. In that case, the only repair is an OS re-insall.

  • My mail app in Mountain Lion freezes

    My mail app in Mountain Lion freezes a few second to a few minutes after launching. I have already re-installed the OS but it didn't help.  Any thoughts?
    I have one exchange account that I have removed and reinstalled.  I've tried to see if it's conflicting with any of my other apps, I can't find anything there either.  Never had this problem before, but would like use of this app.  Thanks.

    More info.  It seems to freeze when switching between mail and other apps.  It then becomes impossible to switch back to the mail app, though mail will be indicated in the app name just to the right of the apple menu

  • TS3899 My iPhone & iPad mail is locked - Press mail app, the screen starts mail, freezes and bounces back to main menu. The fault occurred whilst opening a draft email created in the 'Mail 2 Group' app. Hard reset/reset all/restore backup have no effect -

    I installed the Mail 2 Group App on my iPAD, created an email which I saved to the 'Draft' folder, with something over 300 of my contacts in the bcc. On returning to this email, again in my iPad, the screen locked in mail for a few seconds and bounced bak to the main menu. This repeated on my iPhone, on which I have been carrying out my own checks - this includes deleting the Yahoo account, hard reset (red cross and two buttons), restoring a backup and Reset All in settings.
    I'm stuck !!

    Sending a message with that many addressees may have required more RAM than was available. You can clean up RAM as follows:
    Double-press the HOME button
    Kill each app by flicking its screen image up
    When all apps except the Home screen are closed press HOME
    Wait about 2 minutes for the shutdowns to finish
    Turn the phone off (hold the SLEEP button until "slide to power off" appears, and do so)
    Wait another minute
    Turn the phone back on by holding the SLEEP button until an Apple logo appears
    Now try to send the mail again. Note that you may have an unrelated problem if this works: Many ISPs (Yahoo included) limit the number of email recipients for a single message as a way to combat spam.

  • Mac OS X Lion freezes

    Hi,
    Since I've upgraded to Lion I have problems with Mac OS X Lion(10.7.2) and same problems occurred with previous versions of Lion.
    I was thinking that it was a problem with Microsoft's RDC but it still freezes without this application being started.
    So, I have upgraded all of the possible software for my MacBookPRO
    15" - Early 2011, i7 2.2, 8GB ram, AMD Radeon HD 6750M / 1GB, 512Apple SSD
    Still it freezes, and I have narrowed the applications to (at least those were running all the time when it is happening)
    Safari, Firefox, Microsoft Office Outlook.
    Thing here is that in the beginning I can switch between applications, but as soon as I try to quit them all apps are having status (Not responsive) from the Force Quit menu.
    Only thing I can do is moving my cursor.
    It never happened that it freezes too.
    Any help/suggestions would be more than welcome
    Thanks!

    I had a terrible time with Lion freezing on me multiple times per day, until....
    Last Saturday (Feb. 11, 2012) I made sure my HD was backed up in Time Capsule on my brand new LaCie 500GB storage device.  For good measure I also cloned the HD using Carbon Copy Cloner                                    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/7032/carbon-copy-cloner
    but I did not need to use it.
    Then I started up from my old copy of Snow Leopard in order to access Disk Utility from it (Hold "C"; Restart).   I completely erased the HD on my iMac using Disk Utility then reinstalled the latest backup from Time Machine  (I did not install Snow Leopard). Ever since then I have had no problems with freezing.  I guess it could be a fluke but so far, so good.  Websites also seem to load a lot faster now.
    I also got rid of Perian.  Wheather that had anything to do with it, i don't know.  I only did it because someone else in these forums suggested it.
    BTW,
    I had Sophos for a while but deleted it last fall and replaced it with ClamX-AV.  This was on the advice of my local Mac store.  Apparently Sophos can really gum things up.

  • May have found a fix for iPhone 4 freezing/restarting/locking up issue.

    Ok, so I am one of the many who have suffered from my iPhone 4 freezing, restarting and/or locking up on me.
    I have combed through the discussion threads searching for a fix but never found one that was proven to work. Things like hard resets, restoring from backup, restoring from new etc... People would claim one of the above fixes worked only to return to the thread minutes, hours or days later to report that the problems had started again.
    I understand that the fix that worked for me may not work for everyone, but I'm sure it will work for some. It is a simple fix that I have not seen mentioned in any thread and thought it would be worth sharing.
    Fix: Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
    My iPhone 4 was either freezing, restarting or locking up on almost a daily basis, sometimes several times a day. Since resetting my settings almost a week ago, I have had no problems!
    It is the simplest and least inconvenient fix I have seen, so it's worth giving it a shot!
    Good luck, and I hope it works for most if not all of those experiencing these issues!

    My iphone 4 just started to warm up and the battery is draining quick.  Closed everything and reset to no avail.  Turned off bluetooth, increased push time and checked location settings for new applications.  Weather Doodle was a bit suspicious as it had a purple direction indicator next to the setting.  The only other new app I installed was Lego instruct.  I disabled one of the 4 mail accounts I had that is having network difficulties, went to airplane mode and still I see %1 drain every 10 or 15 minutes.  I'll remove the new new apps and reset to see if it is related to the new apps.  If that doesn't work, I'll try email account reset at home wifi and see if that fixes the issues.
    Thank you for the information.
