10.7.4 causing hangs and loss of internet connection

Since the update I have had applications hanging and crashing. Mostly Mail, iTunes, and Safari.  What is more annoying however is when the computer is inactive for an hour or so, I lose internet connectivity and have to shut down and reboot in order to get it back. I am on a wired connection and sharing another wired connection through the second ethernet port. Has anyone had these issues? It seems like 10.7.4 really messed with my machine...

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Step 1
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Unexpected shutdowns and loss of internet connectivity on brand new 420t

    Hi,
I was experiencing unexpected shutdowns (would see safe mode choices when turned PC back on) and also intermittent internet connectivity issues.
    To Fix:
In device manager, I turned off the option in the Realtek Network Controller Power management tab to allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
It's been working like a charm so far (2 days). I'm not so sure HP should be building PCs with this option set. There are no updates that I haven't installed either. PC still sleeps (can see nic lights go off) and wakes up just fine.
Other that that we really like this PC...Beats Audio wasn't impressive with only the internal speakers, then I tried a good set of external tweeters and a subwoofer and then it was realized.
    Hope this helps someone.

    Troy,
Thanks for the suggestion. It sounds like you've heard that others have had this problem. Is that right?
And are you suggesting that the kernel panics and the loss of Internet connection are related? They often happen independently of one another.

  • DSL issues and loss of Internet Connection-constantly

I also have a problem with the DSL, I always lose my connection or have to reset multiple times everyday. I have made numerous calls and chat just to get the same response. I have a Westall 7500 series. Rest assured you will no longer have an issue. I pay my bill every month and for this terribe service. No one ever gets my issue fixed. I have had 3 cells phones go over there data because this also happens during the night every single night.  I just might not pay my bill this month and go to another carrier as well as file a claim with the better business bureau because apparently Verizon doesnt care!

I have to say I am having the same issue.  Extremely bad last night and today.  Constant disconnects. I oncea gain contacted tech support and they are sending me replacement filters.
I dont think that will help since I have disconnected everything except the modem and still experiencing issues.
I honesly believe they're running out of IPs or overloading their nodes.
If I don't get someone to put some reasonable effort to help me I'm about to cancel my internet.  I'm paying extra for high speed and can't even stay connected (adding this: this is my 5th attempt to try to post this since I keep getting disconnected).
Unfortunately Charter is the only option and fios was denied by the city.  No more tearing up the city to add fiber.
This means I either move or bite the bullet and go with Charter cable.  I just might.  Their speed/pricing plan seems better.  I'd rather not go through the trouble but its become more trouble to use Verizon in the past year.
If anyone can help or offer a solution that would be fantastic.

  • Loss of internet connectivity after upgrading to windows 8.1

Hi, After upgrading to windows 8.1 from windows 8 i am experiencing major problems , loss of internet connectivity for no reason both I.E. and G/CHROME are now taking an age to open there are no virus issues as far as i can see.
I have uninstalled and re-installed  windows 8.1 about four times over the past 9 months or so and the same thing happens after all the updates are in it runs like a dream for say 6weeks or so then i get the same faults as described above then i uninstall/ re-install ok for 6 weeks .
I would apprieate any help or advice thanks

    Hi @BMATH
    Thank you your query.
I understand that after updating to Windows 8.1 about every 6 weeks you loose wireless connectivity for no reason  and the web pages are very slow to open.  If you uninstall and reinstall Windows 8.1 it works fine again for about the same amount of time.  You have done this about 4 times with the same result each time.
Do you know if there is any changes at that time , perhaps an update?
You stated you do not believe you have any viruses.  Just to be sure here are two links that will help confirm that.

  • Can the wireless card in my mac wear out and slow down internet connection??

can the wireless card in my mac wear out and slow down internet connection??

Yes the WiFi card can wear out but not what you would really call wearing out like a pair of pants do. It can start to fail causing the connection between your computer and your Wifi router to slow down, IE transmit and receive less data in a given time period. And then it will fail completely.
But as to your internet connection being affected by a failing WiFi card no that can't happen.
If you turn the WiFi off and connect the computer to your router with an Ethernet cable does your internet browsing and downloading speed increase? If it does then there may be something wrong with the WiFi card in your computer or the WiFi section of your router. Hard to say which.
If after connecting the computer to your router with an Ethernet cable and your speeds do not increase then it is a problem with the router or on your ISPs end.

  • Does anyone know how to set up a macbook pro so that other computers can join me and use my internet connection?

Does anyone know how to set up a macbook pro so that other computers can join me and use my internet connection?

Have you set up any security on the Mac Connection Sharing?
Sorry but I don't use that so I'm not familiar with the settings.
But if you haven't setup and security the iPhone might not mind but I know most Windows computers do not like to connect to Open WiFi. and make sure it is WPA or WPA2.
Then again it may be a setting in the connection sharing like some type of MAC filtering or it may simply be that Mac OS X connection sharing only allows one connection at a time. Try disconnecting your phone and then connect the PC.
As to Linc's response about Windows.
Windows basically does care about connecting to open, unsecured, WiFi. But it will normally pop up a windows asking "Are myou sure you want to connect to this open network". And a simple click on yes will get you connected and an IP address.
So this is clearly a Mac OS X problem.

  • Apple Mobile Device Support uninstall and itunes install causes loss of internet connection

Whenever I uninstall Apple Mobile Device Support (AMDS)  I lose my internet connection. The only way to fix this is to restore Windows to a previous state. I've tried  troubleshooting my internet connection when this happens but Windows tells me something is wrong with both my wired and wireless connection drivers... and of course I need the internet to fix said drivers :s
I've tried repairing AMDS and this doesn't help either.
I've been trying to download itunes but it tells me a program needed to install it cannot be run. After this I can't get back on the internet without first restoring windows to a previous state. I thought that uninstalling everything apple from my system would do the trick but I can't seem to uninstall AMDS without messing up my internet drivers. What else can I try?

Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
(If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?
If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)

  • Firefox either closes suddenly when I click on the address bar after startup or it hangs and also blocks internet explorer from loading

On my Windows XP sp3 system the current the last two releases of Firefox both exhibit the same behavior. When I launch Firefox it will either shutdown within seconds with no crash reporter or other error logged or it will hang completely and indefinitely. When it hangs it also blocks internet explorer 8 from loading. I have tried and followed all the steps in the crashing FAQ including safe mode, uninstalls, re-installs, profile deletes (even the profile dialog closed suddenly). I use Norton Internet Security version 18.6.0.29. A full virus scan does not find any problems. I have disabled all toolbars, plugins and addons and the problem persists. Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Opera all work fine. Only occasionally does Firefox load and keep running. It's as if it is failing on some check at startup and either crashes or hangs most of the time.

  • IChat causes loss of internet connection

I keep losing my internet connection when using iChat (video).
About a month ago I started having intermittent problems with my Comcast cable modem connection. I would lose the connection to the internet, requiring power-cycling the modem to regain it. At its worst, it happened 5x a day, but usually it was once a day. Then I'd go for a long stretch of days with no problems.
More recently my iChat experience degraded. In an hour's chat, I would lose the internet connection 3-4 times.
A few days ago I finally had time to drive the modem to a Comcast office to get it replaced. That same weekend I upgraded my MacBook to Snow Leopard. The internet connection has been solid ever since -- except during the iChat I had yesterday.
I lost the connection four times, but now the modem finds it again without requiring power cycling.
I only use iChat with one other person (my sister, also on Comcast, across the country), so I can't do extensive testing. My sister uses iChat weekly with my parents (video iChat, also using Comcast, in the same town as I am, using a 2009 iMac) and they have no problems.
At the end of the most recent chat, I downgraded the speed to 200kbps. The sound was worse (very muddy) and the picture wasn't as good. I didn't lose the connection, but it generally takes about 10 minutes to fail, and we didn't chat that long at the reduced connection speed. So I can't really say if that helped.
I suspect this is a Comcast problem, but I'm not sure. Their bandwidth caps and hardware "upgrades" have caused all sorts of headaches for me in the past, and there seems to be no way to get accurate information out of them. I have no idea if they're capping my speed, degrading my service, or what.
I'm posting here in the hopes that there is some unknown setting or other trick that I can use in iChat to solve this problem. It's unusable as-is, and very frustrating because it used to be better (and because my parents have no problems).

Whoops, I forgot to add that we're both using MobileMe and Airport Extremes. My sister is wireless and I've tried it both ways (no difference).
The iChat error message that appears when the internet connection is lost and the chat fails is something about "no data received in 10 seconds". The following is the only iChat-specific console log data I could find:

  • Sudden slowness and loss of wireless connection to PC

I've used my Dell laptop on my Airport Extreme wireless network without problem for two years. Yesterday, after installing an HP 8500 printer on the network, my PC became extraordinarily slow on the network, and kept losing its connection. I haven't been able to get it fixed. I've reinstalled the airport extreme, I've reset the cable modem and have turned my firewall off, but nothing has worked. I also uninstalled the printer, but that didn't help either. Any ideas for other things I can try? The imac and iphones connected to this network are still functioning fine, as is the printer, which I've now re-installed. It's just my Dell laptop that is not. Oh, btw, I took the laptop to a wireless hotspot this afternoon, and had no problem connecting to that network.

Update: Reverted to firmware version 7.4.2 and the problem was instantly solved. Hallelujah!

  • Keychain Access and dial-up Internet connection problem

For the past two days I was unable to connect to my dial-up Internet on my Sawtooth. It's got 10.4.11. The Internet phone connections checked out fine. I even tried my old Dell and it got on the Internet ok.
I checked the Internet settings and thought they were ok. My Internet provider's website help section on set-up is worthless for Mac OS X. They only show instructions for OS 8 & 9!! Found some other dial up providers set-ups and went by them.
After trying to get the settings correct, right before I tried to connect to the 'net, a dialog box called "Confirm Access to Keychain" always came up. The box said: "pppd wants permission to use the "PPP Password" item from your keychain. Do you want to allow this? Deny, Allow Once, or Always Allow?" I had read on the Mac OS X help that allowing the keychain always permission to access to use passwords when going online isn't a good idea... I always kept clicking "Deny" and I couldn't connect. Just got brave a bit ago, and clicked on "Allow Once" and here I am on the Internet!!! This keychain business was the problem the whole time!
My question is how in the world did the Keychain get involved, as I didn't even ask it to save the Internet password etc. The Keychain shows PPP password listed three times and I believe a Dashboard certificate. Would it be ok to delete the three PPP password listed? Was going to, but was afraid I'd really mess up Tiger... I don't want to mess with Keychain at all, since I've read in the past that it can really cause headaches if not used correctly.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Yes, you can delete those PPP entries if you don't mind entering the Password each time you connect, though I'm on dial-up & have Always Allow checked without problems or a decade or so.

  • Sporadic Rotating Loss of Internet Connection for Just Some Devices

    Hi,
We've been having a problem where one or two of our devices (phones, laptops, iPads, Apple TV) lose internet connection for 10-30 sec at a time, while the others are fine.
As best as I can tell it's a full loss of connection, not just something running very slowly due to us pushing the bandwidth limits. I've experienced the latter elsewhere and this manifests very differently. It will instantly and fully disconnect a person from an online game or drop a skype call without the accompanying prolonged lag or distortion of bottlenecked bandwidth.
It happens at all times of day, and does not seem related to our peak times of bandwidth usage, nor the general public's peak times of usage.
We should have enough bandwidh for our usage, and usually we do. Our system is 25/25 Mbps and during our peak use at most we would probably have 1 laptop gaming, 1 HD video stream, and 2 non-HD streams. However, like I said before, the problem seems unrelated to overall bandwidth usage. The same problem occurs even at midnight when our local usage is minimal.
Overall we have 6 laptops, 5 phones, an iPad, 2 microcell signal boosters, and Apple TV, in total connected to the FiOS. We have a property with tenants where the signal is distributed via 3 WiFi routers and one direct ethernet cable to my laptop, and one to the Apple TV.
It happens on devices that are both connected through the WiFi (wife's laptop, phones, iPad) and ethernet (my laptop, Apple TV). It can happen with devices that are a few unobstructed feet from the WiFi router. However, it anecdotely seems to happen more on our phones than laptops.
My hunch is it is something outside our local network. This is because our equipment  and usage has basically remained unchanged over the last couple months. (We got one new microcell tower for a different carrier, one new wifi router, but overall same # of people and patterns of usage.) And yet the problem seems to be getting worse. Back in probably early November I don't remember this problem occuring at all.
My second best guess is there are more devices connected to the network than it can handle simultaneously, and it rotates which gets kicked off. Maybe this was occuring before but we didnt realize it.
My third guess is it has to due with signal interference with the various WiFi routers and microcell boosters. However, this seems less likely since it also affects devices connected via ethernet cables.
Any thoughts or advice is much appreciated! Thanks!
    -Ned

Ok, so in the mean time we decided to upgrade our service so I've only tried this solution now.
My problem though now is I can log into 192.168.1.1, then give my verizon admin password, and then set my channel preference. That seems fine for changing the main network input and wifi router (call it A).
However, we have another wifi router (call it B) which is fed from A via a cable. I cannot figure out how to change B's wifi channel. Therefore I worry if we have only switched A, since A feeds B (as well as the 2 microcells) they will all still be on the same channel and therefore still interfering with each other.
I have tried www.routerlogin.net (and .com) as written on my netgear router and I get "http://searchassist.verizon.com/" telling me "Sorry, We could not find www.routerlogin.net". I have also tried logging into wifi router B via all the 192.168.1.X addresses I see listed on the Verzion account when I log in via 192.168.1.1 (in total I tried all the 192.168.1.[1-24] options).
    Thanks for the help!
