10.7.4 recovery to another disk?

Is it possible to do a reovery reinstallation to a different HD? My Mac Pro has a 10.7.4 Startup disk which is running a bit hot according to TechTool Pro so I want to instal a new HD and download and reinstall the OS on it. Will I be able to choose the destination disk for the reinstall? Thank in advance for answers.

Yes. BTW, apparently you failed to save a copy of that installer app somewhere outside of /Applications. If I'm wrong, just use that installer and select the new HD after erasing and formatting it correctly. If not, after wasting resources DLing it again, quit it, save a copy, and then install it on the new HD.
What's a bit hot? If you're using TTP's SMART test, I wouldn't put much value with its temp results. DL Temperature Monitor (free) and run it.  These are my iMac temps, running ML. SL and Lion are comparable.

  • How to move Tablespace from One disk group to another disk group in RAC

    Hi All,
I have 11gR2 RAC env on Linux.
As ofnow I have problem with disk group. I have 3 disk group which is almost full - 98%. I have added one NEW disk group and want to move some of the Tablespace(TBS) from OLD disk group to NEW diskgroup and make some free space in OLD disk group.
Can any one suggest me how to move TBS from one disk group to another disk grup without shutting down the instance.
    DB is in Noarchive mode.
    Thanks...

    Hi Helios,
Thanks for doc id but I am looking for noarchive mode solution. becaues I got ORA-

Hence I am trying something and findout below steps but not sure how useful it is:
    1- put tablespace offine
2- Copy the file to new diskgroup using Either RMAN or DBMS_FILE_TRANSFER.
3- Rename the file to point to new location.
    4- Recover the file.
    5- Bring the file online.
I had move 240M TBS from OLE to NEW.
These steps run successfully so I think this is valid for noarchive mode.Hence want to confirm..so inform me please.
Thanks :)I have doubt in my mind:
    1. You database is in noarchivelog mode
    2. You're taking tablespace offline
    3. Suppose you're moving a file of size 10GB(or any larger filesize) to another disk group
    4. Now after moving the file, you're trying to bring the tablespace online............NOW
tablespace will need recovery. if the required data is inside the SGA then it is ok. But if the data has been flushed, then?
if step 2 and 3 has taken significant time, then most probably you'll not be able to bring that tablespace online.

  • Create a shadow copy then replace to another disk

    Dear all,
I want to do a script that create a shadows copy for D disk then replace this shadows copy to another disk. Is it possible?

To rehash a bit.  ShadowCopy is used to help a backup program to snapshot a file that is in use.  This works with single file software like Office documents.  It is a temporary snapshot and is gone as soon as the file is backed up,
A database is a synchronized set of files.  The files can change over time and they may not be recoverable if backed up by making individual copies of the files in the set.
Most databases allow you to do a copy backup if you dismont the database,  When this is done the files will be in a consistent state.  They can then be copied.  This is also the most efficient method of making a backup.
To understand how a database can be unusuable from a copy just look at the recovery porcedures for an Exchange database.  Also look up the recovery porcedures for an MSSQLServer database that has failed to mount after a disk issue.  All recovery
instructions note that data is likely to be lost.
Databases that support live backup do so by pausing the logwriters updates to the database files in a controlled fashion.  A backup can then be made and pending changes can be captured while the database is still online.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Itunes restore asking for another disk

I backed up my Itunes library on a DVD this afternoon before doing a fresh windows install.
When I went to restore, it only restored about two-thirds of my music, then asked me for another disk.
The problem is, there is no other disk. Everything fit onto one disk.  According to the disk, it has all 600+ songs, but will only put on almost 400.
Can anyone help me? Or is anyone else expirencing the same issue?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
If you cannot get a component to uninstall properly move on to the next one, then delete the named folder. The reinstall should be successful.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • Hidden Disks in Recovery HD's Disk Utility

When I go into Disk Utility in Recovery Mode, I see Macintosh HD, EFI, and Recovery HD under disk0 and another disk with a black globe icon called disk1 with Mac OS X Base System (with an orange disk icon) within disk1.  When I put diskutil list into Terminal only disk0 appears, so I'm wondering what disk1 is, if it is needed, and how to delete it?

That is a part of the small recovery partition (don't remove it or you can't boot into recovery mode) that get's mounted to run the limited OS X in order to make changes to your main disk and run the few utilities it knows about (Terminal, Disk Utility, Safari, Reinstall OS X, Restore from TM backup, Reset Password, Network Utility, etc). The phrase "OS X Base System" is what always appears for an OS X image that is contained in the contents of the recovery volume partition. You can see what is in this small file system if you manually try to mount the "Recovery" partition with something like
sudo mkdir /xxx  (use anything you want that doesn't conflict with an existing folder name)
         sudo mount -t hfs /dev/disk0s3 /xxx
then look at the contents of the /xxx/com.apple.recovery.boot folder and see what that folder contains. There is a 450MB dmg file that gets mounted to form the "OS X Base System" that you see a file named BaseSystem.dmg -- You could even mount it to see what it contains if you want:
         cd /xxx/com.apple.recovery.boot
         hdiutil attach ./BaseSystem.dmg
Then you will see the same "Mac OS X Base System" mounted in the /Volumes folder
To unmount the "Mac OS X Base System" volume and clean up (the device associated with this image will vary so look and see what it is on your system using something like:
         df -kt
whichever device is associated with the "/Volumes/Mac OS X Base System" mount point is the device to use in the "hdiutil detach" command below - on my system it was /dev/disk4s2:
         cd /
         hdiutil detach /dev/disk4s2
         sudo umount /xxx
         sudo rmdir /xxx
So, don't remove that mysterious partition - you will have big problems if you do.

  • Data recovery after crash disk

    Hello again,
Last week I posted a question concerning the error message folowing the Hardware test.
It was bad sign and I had to take my computer to the Apple service.
The intern disk had to be replaced and they told me that they can't recover the date ( not in theyr shop)
How works the data recovery once the disk is out of the computer ? Is there necessarily a "white room" process wich is very expensive ?
Sorry for this, certainly, stupid question, but I'm not very good in computers ...
Thank you again for your answers !
    Cheers
    Carmen

    Thank's for your answer.
I know it is more than recomended to backup constantly.
I did so until last february so all my data isn't lost, but for 4 month my external drive was turn off ( can't remember why I did this ) and just before the crash I started a backup wich didn't work ( or rather turned for at least 12 hours but , aparantly didn't save anything, if this is possible...)
The question was , is there any way to rescue something without going bankrupt

  • How do I move my home directory to another disk?

I want to find out the "standard procedure" for moving my home directory to another disk.  My current system disk is getting quite full, so I have purchased additional storage.  The issues I am concerned about are the following:
    Preserving the file permissions
I have used rsync and ditto commands to copy the file.  Does rsync preserve the permissions like the ditto command?
Updating the System to use the new home directory
I have used the Ctl-Click on the accounts control panel to update the location of the home directories.  Do applications use "~<username>" or /Users/<username> to find the home directory of the user (obviously this is limited to Apple Controlled software).
Understanding the /Users and /home directories
Since Apple is no longer using netinfo, I wanted to get a better understanding how these directories are set up.  Is the /home directory exclusively for network mounted home directories.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

I disagree with Linc Davis on whether to move the home folder, But I think you are going about it the wrong way.
Having a Boot drive with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix directories including Paging/Swap on it is one of the best ways to speed up routine disk Access for all your other files. The system keeps "snacking" away loading and reloading bits and pieces of System and Applications as you work, and that System activity slows "regular" disk access way down by moving the drive heads away from the files you are processing.
Giving System files their own drive speeds up everything.
Here are two good recipes and discussions about how and why to do this, and how to make it happen without a single line of Terminal code:

  • Moving Hyper-V VM to another disk

Hi all, I have read several forums about moving the Hyper-V VM to another disk but I still don't understand on the replication side. I have two physical server running Hyper-V and it's HA between each other with all VM running replication. I have install
a new disk on both plysical machine and both need to move all the VM to the new disk.
Please let me know if my steps are correct.
In this scenario, I have 2 hour downtime so I could power off all VMs:
    1) Pause all replication for all VMs.
    2) Export the replicated powered-off VMs on the inactive server.
    3) Copy it to the new disk.
    4) Import the VMs from the new location.
    5) Power off the VMs on the active server
    6) Export the VMs.
    7) Copy it to the new disk location
    8) Export the VMs from the new location
    9) Power up the VMs and start the replication
    10) Delete the old vhd on the old location
Qns 1: Will the replication know the new location on the other server or as long the VM on both server are on the exact location so it will automatically replicate over ?
In another scenario let's say I don't have any downtime and just for my knowledge:
    1) Pause all replication for all VMs.
    2) Export the replicated powered-off VMs on the inactive server.
    3) Copy it to the new disk.
    4) Import the VMs from the new location.
    5) Failover the VMs to the inactive server
    6) Power off the VMs on the other server
    7) Export the VMs.
    8) Copy it to the new disk location
    9) Export the VMs from the new location
    10) Power up the VMs
    11) Failover the VMs
    12) Delete the old vhd files at the old location
Qns 2: Will the failover work in this case after I have change the location of the other server ?

    1) What Operating System are you running on the HyperV Server?
    Win 2012
    2) You are talking about HA, but I would assume that you don't have a cluster here. Right?
Yes no cluster here. HA means if one of my Hyper-V is down, the other VMs on the other Hyper-V would take over
    3) You are talking about Replication, but I would assume that you don't mean HyperV Replica. Right?
But If you have HyperV Replica running you don't have to export / delete / copy / import /etc. your VMs. This is all done by HyperV replica...
I don't understand this part. You mean Hyper-V Replica could help me to move the vmhd to another disk ?

  • Moving Ircat and Irdata to another disk

    Hi,
I tried to move the catalog of my 250'000 pictures (lightroom 4.1 - Win7) to another Disk than C:/ (which is quite full) but in the catalog preferencies, it is only possible to view the path ant the location of this catalog. As I manually tried to move the all the "Lightroom" folder (including .Irdata Previews and .Ircat files) I had a blank Lightroom at the next start up. I think that the link was therefore broken. How can I have the catalog on a more capacitive HD than in the default C:/ ?
    Thanks
    Remy

Move the catalog file and associated subfolders/files in your operating system, and then in your operating system double-click on the catalog file
You only have to do that double-click once, and thereafter you can double-click the regular Lightroom icon

  • How do I do this:  "This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk?"

"This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."

Stick the disk in, reboot holding c.
Disk Utility is a menu option about the 2 or 3rd screen in the installer. (don't install OS X!)
Because your booted form the installer disk, you can repair the disk.
Quit and exit the installer and reboot.
If your drive is not repaired, make a note of all what it says, for Apple to use.
Reboot and get your files off to a external drive,
Take the note and your comptuer to Apple for a warranty/Apple care call, they will replace the drive.

  • Steps to migrate database backup location to another disk ?

As the database is getting bigger and bigger, the existing disk for backup runs out of space.
We intend to replace it with another disk.
Just would like to seek your advice
    1) Do we need to stop SQL Server when we change the backup location ?  Most likely NO
    2) Should we change the backup location in Database Maintenance Plan before copying BAK / TRN files across disks ?
    3) Can I use the following command for copying files across disks ?
    ECHO OFF
    xcopy D:\Mybackup\*.* \\DestServer\D$\backup\ /S /Y /E /Q
    Thanks

Have you heard about backup compression. If you have SQL server 2008 enterprise you ca take advanatge of backup compression. I have used it and works well.If you have 2008 R2 standard and enterprise both can use backup compression.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb964719(v=sql.105).aspx
Below query will set backup compression for ALL backups on your system
    sp_configure 'show advanced options',1
    go
    reconfigure
    go
    sp_configure 'backup compression default',1
    go
    reconfigure

  • Recording to another disk?

I'm moving from ProTools Free (OS 9) to GarageBand, and have a question.
What is the correct proceedure to get garageband to use another disk or partition to store audio files?
At present I'm doing a Save-As, and saving the song file to another disk, then using that icon to open the song.
    David

Because usually your system disk is busy running the shop. You can get away with it for a while if your projects are small, but after a while, things will start to slow down, and audio may not always have top priority over system functions. Result - gliches. If you are a privateer, maybe no problem, but if you are doing it for a living, it would be almost suicidal.
Most professionals have been using a MacPro with several internal disks, system, audio, and maybe a couple of sample library disks. Lately with the advent of Thunderbolt, external disks are stating to be a more reasonable option, which has been bringing the iMacs and laptops more into play.Firewire is OK, but if you are running dozens of tracks with lots going on, as well as a firewire interface, things can start to bottle neck.
if you have the option of only one internal drive, make sure your extermal audio drive is AT LEAST firewire 400. 800 is much better, and eSATA or Thunderbolt is as good as an internal drive. USB2 is not a feasible option for external audio, unless you are only talking about half a dozen tracks, and you don't mind a bit of skittishness.
    Hope this helps.

I have an external hard drive, but I can't even copy the OS back to the internal hard drive! I'm wondering if it's not allowed.
I was wondering if it's possible to buy Lion and install it on the internal HD, the one without an OS on it. That way, when/if I want to use the software that's incompatible with Lion, I could boot up with the external HD/10.6.8. Otherwise, including when I want to fire up Windows, I'd boot up using the internal HD/Lion.
Is it possible to install Lion on a HD that doesn't presently have an OS on it?
PS- I have a disc for installing 10.5.6 (I think it is), but the machine hangs up if I try to boot off of this disc. That's why I needed to put this external HD into service.
Lion is not available on CD but can be purchased from the Apple Store on a USB slick for about $60 - $70. As far as putting Snow Leopard on an external, then you will need to make a bootable clone of the system using a program such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! Using Time Machine, I believe, is not a bootable option.
    Good Luck

  • Extend C Drive from Another Disk

    Hello,
I want to extend C drive using un allocated pace from another disk. I have gone through the thread "Extending of C:\ Drive by using un allocated disk space from another volume in Windows Server 2008". But I'm wondering if same can be done on Windows
    Server 2012 R2 ?
Is there any free third party tool available to perform this task ?

    Hi,
If the unallocated space is adjacent to the drive that you want to merge. You can add more space to the drive by extending them into adjacent unallocated space on the same disk. It is still apply to windows server 2012 R2.
