10.7.4 trash/file deletion issue (bug?)

On my iMac, running 10.7.4 os/x with 8gb ram, I've experienced some maddening problem with Finder windows.
I am new(ish) to the Mac universe, but with plenty of Windows and Linux.
Desired functionality:  from within the Trash folder, I wish to select one or more files, then to delete them with one click of the mouse.
What I do:  I open Trash in a Finder window by clicking on the docked icon, then select a file, then click on the delete button on the Finder window toolbar (not from the menu's at the top of my desktop).
What appears to happen:  the file disappears from the Trash finder window after I click the trash button.  There are no intervening dialog boxes and neither a progress or completion indicator is displayed. But the command only appears to run correctly. And for many months I was unaware that in actuality it was doing the exact opposite of what I thought. Instead of deleting the file, it was restoring the file to its original location.
It was months before I actually caught this, but at one point I started wondering why my available disk space seemed off. Then, I happened to have a Finder window opened and the trash opened right next to it. And was able to see the file I was "deleting" was reappearing in its original directory!
Why does the delete button actually restore files?!
Can somebody try and replicate this so I know that it's not my machine?
Thank you very much,
/stf

Which, as expected, will sucessfully delete all of the contents of the trash folder.  There are times, however, where I wish to selectively delete files, and, for economy, to be able to do so with a single click.
And when I select a file, then click the delete button, the file is restored, not deleted.
Surely this cant be intentional?

Also, I had trouble deleting the backups of those files and folders in time machine. I can delete most of it. But for one folder (and all the folders in which it resides in the hierarchy) I can't deleted it. I tell it to delete backups of that folder (or folders it is in), I put in the password, and goes "ding". But nothing disappears...
Are you doing that via the Finder or Terminal? If so, that's not the way to delete backups. See #12 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).
And now I'm getting an error in time machine. "Files can't be copied onto the backup disk because it appears to be "read only"". I do get info on the disk, and my account has Read & Write privleges, but it say "You can only read" above that".
The Finder or Terminal deletions may have corrupted your backups. Repair them, per #A5 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum).

I'm doing the deletion through Time Machine (I go into Time Machine, find the folder in the backup, and ask Time machine to delete all backups of that folder).
I did find the tip of unmounting the disk, rebooting, and remounting it. That Stopped messages about the disk being read only. However, the folder still doesn't delete. I'm also a bit worried about these being symptoms of some other problem...

  • Cannot Delete .trash file of an external hard drive

I am having issues deleteing a .trash file from my Western Digital external hard drive.
I moved 500GB of my photos from that hard drive to a desktop hard drive, they copied to that hard drive and then went to delete the files off my WD. Half way through the deleting it I knocked the hard drive and it ejected. Now it is showing a .trash file that is about 400gb on my WD and if I go to right click delete I get an error saying "cannot delete an unexpected error occured (error code - 50) I had a bit of a look and it looks like I only have the permission to write on it, so I went into get info and change it and the file size went from 400gb to 0kb.
    Any suggestions?

Try holding the option key and Finder-Empty Trash
Try repairing the disk with Disk Utility

Okay, i have 2 bugs with maverick.  First, when I delete a file within a window, the files deletes but the preview doesn't delete until I close the window and reopen it.  Second, I work on a network of computers and the search feature is now buggy...  When I search for a file, A) it asks me if it's a name, or it wont produce anything, and B), its slower than in prior OS versions and in some instances I have to toggle to a different directory and go back to my original directory in the search: menu bar or the search wont produce anything...  Very buggy.

It appears to me that network file access is buggy in Maverick.
In my case I have a USB Drive attached to airport extreme (new model) and when I open folders on that drive they all appear empty. If I right click and I select get info after a few minutes! I get a list of the content.
It makes impossible navigate a directory tree.
File access has been trashed in Maverick.
They have improved (read broken) Finder. I need to manage a way to downgrade to Lion again.

  • Deleted mail does not go to trash file and returns to inbox

I'm running OS 10.6.2 and Mail 4.2. When I delete mail on my MacBook PRO, the message goes away, but doesn't go into my trash file. When I refresh mail, the deleted messages come back. I'm using exchange server, and I have no problems deleting mail from my iPhone or web mail. In addition, I have other mail accounts that allow me to delete mail without any other issues. I've rebuilt my mail database (mailbx - rebuild), and even deleted the mail account and reloaded it from exchange. HELP!

In that case, if the account in question is an admin account, you would just tack "sudo" on at the beginning:
    sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash
If the affected account is not an admin account, you need to log in to an admin account and do this:
    sudo rm -rf /Users/theusername/.Trash
...where "theusername" should be the name of the user folder with the broken trash.

  • About 1 week ago deleted email's have shown up in my inbox. I have gone into my deleted file and deleted them all forever. I am still receiving old email's in my inbox and of course when I dlete them from the inbox more go into the trash file.e

This was thourough. Trash emails going into my in box. when I delete them more come into the inbox. I deleted all the emails in the trash file. When I delete them from the inbox they go back to the trash and back & forth we go.

Sorry, not a Firefox support issue as Firefox doesn't do email, it's a web browser.
If you are using Firefox to access your mail, you are using "web-mail". You need to seek support from your service provider or a forum for that service.

I have an iMac purchased in May 2011.  OSX Lion 10.7.3.  I deleted backup file from the external hard drive which operates from Time Machine.
Now, the trash can will not empty some of the files deleted from the backup harddrive.
The trash contains-- File folder: "Core Services" which contains a locked file: "boot.efi".
    It will not delete.
How do I get the trash can empty of these files?

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

I have tried reseting to factory settings by removing battery and holding down the power switch for more than 5 sec but this does nothing.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as I think with so much unwanted data on the desktop and other places the whole os will crash very soon.
    Thanks, Rick

The hard drive may be dying anyway, or the directory damaged because it is so full.  You should never let the hard drive get over 85% full.
    A -36 error is a read/write error.
All you did with the power is reset the SMC.  Does nothing to reset everything to factory settings.
Do you have your original 10.4 installer discs for the MacBook?
    Is your data backed up?

  • ACR Delete bug? Converted files deleted with originals!

Open ACR with a set of raw files.
Convert and saw in the same location.
Mark some/all of the originals for deletion.
    Click Done.
Both the originals and the converted files are deleted. And contrary to the delete function mouse over description, they are not moved to the trash but deleted completely!
    This is not nice behavior.

    Hi Thomas,
I just did an experiment. I copied some raw files to a new directory on an external hard drive.
    Opened them in ACR.
    Converted/saved.
Waited for the save queue to complete.
Confirmed the jpgs were created in explorer.
Marked the still selected RAW files for deletion.
    Clicked done.
About half of the JPGs are deleted, this time to the recycle bin.
I tried with different number of files, and couldn't determine the pattern of which were deleted.
If after converting I exit ACR. Then reopen and select the RAWs for deletion, the JPGs are not touched.
So, more data, but not much more sense. ACR is deleting just-converted JPG's, but not all of them, when it deletes the RAWs. If you work from a CF card, either ACR or XP is deleting not moving to the recycle bin.

  • Please help I just accidentally deleted a very very important note from my "Notes" on my iPhone 4s.  How can I get it back? Is there a "Trash" file somewhere for deleted notes?  Thank you, Susan

Had you never backed up the phone before? When you saw the iTunes logo and cable, the device was in recovery mode. The data was already lost. The only way to recover from that is to restore the device, which will delete all of your data. You will only be able to restore to your last backup, whenever that was. Sorry this happened, but this highlights the importance of doing regular backups. The backup is the only protection you have against a problem like this.

  • I have accidentally emptied the trash and deleted files that i was trying to put back

I have emptied the trash accidentally, deleting files that i was trying to put back! Can you help me to recover them?

I cannot recommend any specific data recovery software because I have not been in a situation where I needed it.  I am fairly diligent having my important data backed up (two copies) so this is not a problem for me.  Do look at Time Machine (one of my two backups) since it is very easy to set up and use.  Look through these forums for situations where others have had to recover data and see if they mention specific recovery software.
Do not take these remarks as my being condescending. I am simply stating the facts.  Try to view the price of the software as punishment for your faux pas.  We all make mistakes and I have committed my share, but not in data loss.
    Ciao.

  • Time Capsule Trash - undelete deleted files

Not sure if this question has been answered as I could not find a thread relating to it. I recently deleted some files off my TC and needed to undo some deletions but realised that the files were nowhere to be found. What occurs with files deleted off TC (normal delete command using right-click, not secure delete)? They are obviously not sent to the Trash folder. Please help.

    Welcome to the discussions!
The only way you might be able to retrieve the deleted files is open up the Time Capsule case, pull the drive (which will void the TC warranty) and place it in a separate enclosure. Then try data restoration software to see if the file(s) might be retrievable.

  • I accidently deleted my e-mail bfore reading, Is their anyway to get the messages back. Junk & trash files are emty

I accidentaly deleted my messages in my in box. I need them back. I checked the junk and trash files but no luck.

I'm sorry to say, unless you download them to your computer (using thunderbird) and are a master at restoring data from parts of your hard drive that is counted pretty much as dead space or can take it to a data restore place (both ways your chances are slim at best), you have to say goodbye to your messages.
