10.7.5 update crippled?

Attention: 10.7.5 update recked havoc my mac mini i7. Attempting to recover from Time Machine backup (7 hours to complete via FW). I have never encountered a crippled update since 1993, when I first started using a Macintosh computer. "Thank you" Apple.

After an hour, I tried to quit iCalendar. It was "application not responding," so I force quit, and got back in. In the title bar, it said it was updating, for maybe 45 seconds. Now it's fine and my historical data (stored locally) is there.
I upgraded another machine, and the Updating progress dialog box appeared for less than a minute and then was fine.
There's probably something underlying that's wrong with my main machine. Guess I'd better get on with cleaning up.

  • Heads-Up: Safari 4.0.5 update cripples Disk Utility

    Hi guys,
Just a heads-up. If you're planning to install the Safari 4.0.5 update and also maintain a separate OSX partition on the same HDD (backup, maintenance partition, etc), you might consider holding off for now. I installed the update, everything went well as far as Safari was concerned, but an apparent side effect is that now I can't check and repair permissions on my other OSX partition - the one I use to repair disks and permissions; the buttons for checking and repairing permissions are now greyed out. When I highlight the drive I'm booted into, everything's normal, though. Still doing research about this...

    HI,
    Code Type: X86-64 (Native)
Try running Safari in 32-bit mode.
Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. *Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.*

  • Last software update cripples Motorola Razrs- why?

We have two Motorola Razrs that since the last update, have been unresponsive, slow, and has issues texting, calling... you know, using your phone as a phone.
Well, chatting with Verizon will get you nowhere, support was unresponsive and said 'sorry'. This is not acceptable to me. I have three lines plus the home phone line with Verizon, been with Verizon for tens years, and this is the response I get?
I consider this theft of service-> I cannot use the service as paid for by me and 'supplied' by Verizon. If Verizon doesn't want to hear it, I have the FCC, politicians, social media, press, etc that will.
    I need resolution.

I have completed the factory reset, to my wife’s dismay, three times to date. SafeMode has no effect. There is no damage, water or otherwise. We have had these devices two years, there is no warranty. These devices were working perfectly before the last maintenance update pushed by Verizon to our phones. That is our sticking point: These phones were working flawlessly before the update, unreliable, slow, (removed) since the update.
Look, I don’t want a discount, I don’t want anything free, we just want working phones.
Here is the situation, we already have three lines and a Verizon home base station.  We had planned on upgrading to Note 3’s, adding another phone line for my daughter, and ‘upgrading’ both with our Razrs. This can no longer be unless we get this problem resolved.  We’ve spent quite a bit of money over the years with Verizon, I’m not understanding why we’re having these issues or why we cannot resolve them.

  • Last update crippled my macbookpro display

Now most movies I run shows white rectangular artifacts.
Also scrolling through long rich web pages breaks the display. The content is clipped. Text on the page is split in half. It seems it can't keep up with the scrolling and never tries to fix it.
I also think the videos suffer from the same 'performance' issue.
I remember something about the last update containing a video update, but am not sure it was for nvidia based pros (like mine) or the ATI ones.....
Anyway, I think that update caused my probs.

The only practical alternative is to have the MBP shipped to the nearest Apple repair facility.  I suspect that will prove to be very expensive.
You may investigate if there are any competent local Apple repair technicians.
    Ciao.

  • 10.4.4 Update Cripples Jabber Connection

10.4.4 has killed my connection to jabber on at least two machines. I get a warning that my jabber login details will not be encrypted. Then prompts for my account password, then back to the warning and just gets stuck in this loop.

    Hi Daniel,
Go to IChat Preferences > Accounts.
Click on the Jabber account on the left
    Click on Sever Settings tab.
    Disable SSL login.
    Disable Show Warning.

  • Theoretical question re: ipad 3 update from iOS6 to iOS7

With Apple's recent statement regarding breaking Facetime on iOS6 iPads, do we have recourse if the update to 7.1.1 slows the machine down, as I've read here that it does in many posts?
For example, my iPad 3 is under AppleCare.
if the update cripples the machine, makes wifi worse, slows it down, causes the battery life to shorten....
what will Apple do to accommodate me - give me an iPad 4?
As much as I dislike iOS7, if that's the only way to get Facetime working again, it's possible I may do it, however, shouldn't Apple be responsible to supply me with a unit that is every bit as fast and responsive, in every way, as the unit was BEFORE being forced into the update policy implemented by Apple?
it is under warranty, after all.....

It would be useful for you to actually read your warranty before asking what it covers. That is why a copy is included with the device when purchased.

  • Automatic updates for iPhone apps?

    Hi all,
Is it possible for iTunes to automatically download updates for my iPhone apps as they become available? I haven't found any way to set this up. It would be great if iTunes would download updates in the background (as is the case with podcasts), so they would be available to sync every time I connect my iPhone. Let me know if this is doable.
    Many thanks!

It seems like a good idea but it isn't. There has been a few instances when an app update crippled or reduced functions. I like to read what is included in a updated before downloading it. Shazam is one example. The free version worked for years. Shazam was crippled via an update before the iPhone 4 was released.

  • OS X Server Updates overwrite tomcat configuration files

I have a tomcat installation running on OS X Server. Whenever I perform a mac software/security update, my /Library/Tomcat/bin/catalina.sh and /Library/Tomcat/conf/server.xml files are both overwritten and restored to the default settings.
This is a huge problem because I have tomcat tuned to run with 4GB of memory and in 64 bit mode. I also have the server.xml tuned for efficient connector pool usage, max connections, etc.
All of my setting are wiped out by the OS update crippling my web apps with the default 64M of memory and such.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks In Advance.

The Question is how to get Apple to fix SSLPassPhraseDialog exec:/etc/httpd/getsslpassphrase
    Any ideas ?
File a bug report with Apple via its Bug Reporter system. Go to https://connect.apple.com/MemberSite and join the Apple Developer Connection (ADC)—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Then, go to https://bugreport.apple.com/
click on the Login to the Apple BugReporter link (using your Apple ID username and password), and file your bug report/enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.
BTW, you'd probably get more sympathy posting to the server forums at http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=96

  • Do Not Upgrade to 9.1.2!!! HT totally gone.

Severe issues. Now getting less tracks than before when procs were broken.
No HT at all on 6-core 3.33 MacPro. Only see 6 cores. They work, but 4-core with HT in 9.1.1 worked 40% better. Thankfully I had a backup of 9.1.1. This is extremely depressing.
less than 50 tracks with Evan bench on 9.1.2.
Previous 4-core WITH HT gave me 76 tracks. I get the same load as 9.1.1 when only 3 core appeared to be working and HT was off. grrrr.

What a cludge! The answer from apple seems to be crippling performance on the quad macs. That must be one of the geniuses they keep telling us about. I wonder what their wall of silence policy on communication with customers achieves? People who recently bought quads will be enraged to find Logic is now, and possibly for all future updates, crippled from using HT. Why would you want to spend a fortune on a studio Mac when Apple can't tell you what performance to expect, or that they might alter its performance for the worse without any warning. As it is, users are dependent on message boards and forums to cobble together information and experiences with Macs - this is pathetic from a billion dollar company, the disdain they have have for people who save for a very long time to buy a new computer with zero assistance from them in reaching an informed decision.

  • What's wrong with my iPhone 4 battery?!?

The phone dies really fast, and this has only been happening recently.  I also leave it overnight to charge every night, and nowadays, it only charges to 30%.  I ran the battery down every month prior like its recommended. Also, is it possible that the actual battery is almost out of cycles? Ive had the iPhone 4 since launch and use it very heavily.  Could it be a problem with the charger? I know the IOS 5 update crippled some people's battery life, but mine was fine, and I've had IOS 5.01 for a while, with no problems until last week. Any idea what's wrong.

Welcome to the club! When you go into the Apple store to have your iPhone diagnostics evaluated by the genius crew, most likely they will say nothing is wrong. After 2 trips to the Apple store, I sent in my iPhone 5s on the 3rd try for a battery replacement under warranty. Well, the problem still exists and Apple says everything is just fine and dandy. I have to respectfully disagree.
There is another extensive thread that discusses this very subject here: Iphone 5s battery drains fast after ios 7.1 update. Good luck and post up your experiences with the Apple crew.

  • Quicktime and itunes will not open - buffer overrun in quicktime

I cannot open Itunes. It says it needs quicktime. quicktime will not open. says buffer overrun. reinstalled both itunes and quicktime. both used to run prior to updates. Help.

Quicktime was working on my Vista computer up until a short time ago. I believe one of the Microsoft updates crippled it. I have looked at several forums and read the other threads on this site and from what others have described I really believe now that Microsoft did this with one of their updates. There are many problems with Vista all due to Microsoft trying to force developers to use only their products. Unfortunately they are squeezing us customers really hard.

  • Backups after downgrading?

I'm planning on downgrading my phone back to the 1.1.4 from 2.0.2.
(I've had numerous issues with the software update crippling the basic functionality of the phone, this, coupled with frequent crashes has made me unhappy with the current version of the 2.0 software)
I know where to get the old firmware and the process to install it... My only question is; when I revert to the old firmware, will the backup of my texts and things like that follow? I know the text backup works when going forward, my only concern is that I'd lose all of my SMS stuff during the downgrade.
Has anyone done this already? Did the backup work?
    Thanks in advance.

You also have a etherchannel configured on your nexus 5K, isn't it right?
Take a look at the logging messages and try to find a MAC_FLAPPING message related to the servers MAC addresses.
Also check out this bug: https://tools.cisco.com/bugsearch/bug/CSCuf65032.
It was corrected on the version 2.22(1b) (your old one), but it may be back on the 4.0(1b).
Try to apply the workaround suggested and see if it works.
    Cheers,
    Kauy Gabriel.

  • New cam HD and imovie

Im thinking of getting new HD camcorder, Now If i get one that shoots 1080p in avchd will this work in imovie to idvd to a dvd well or will i have interlacing problems or need to convert the file before i put it into imovie? Ive had alot of problems with my DV cam. And im hoping getting a 1080p one will fix this.

I hear ya. I even partitioned my disk and started down the dual boot path to keep my Windows video editing, but then decided to really give the Mac a solid chance before giving up. (I messed up my disk trying to reclaim the hidden windows boot partition and had to restore the whole machine from Time Machine. )
It was interesting to read that Apple let some Final Cut Studio developers go. Some folks even suggested that this move indicates Apple moving toward iPhone/iPad apps and putting less importance on development for the iMac platforms.
The camera manufacturers are flooding the consumer market with HD lite, Full HD, and even lately Full HD+ (60p) cameras. Millions of people are buying these cams with little idea that their $100 camera purchase is going to need a thousand (or more ) dollar computer purchase, 2TB external disk, and at the minimum a $100 editor purchase. (I got Cyberlink PD8 Ultra for $70 after trying seven different under $200 editors on my 2003 P4. I didn't even need a new PC, but fell in love with the iMac 27" display, and got tired of Microsoft Tuesdays and Norton intelligent virus updates every 5 minutes. My PC could render video but the Norton "intelligent updates" crippled the machine.)
Enough *******' though, I love my iMac. I can live with iMovie09 and Toast Pro as long as Apple updates don't break anything... I keep reading about people having update problems - scares me.
(Let's hope they don't fine us for thread creep.)

  • 4.3.1 -- Overall performance declined

Why has the update to 4.3 made the performance of my 3GS decline? It has annoyed me to no end that every iPhone update cripples an older iPhone. I have updated to 4.3.1 hoping it would fix the stupid glitches. The graphics are horrible: when I open up a program or double tap for multitasking, the graphics aren't nearly as smooth as they were on 4.2.1.; my battery performance ***** and I barely use my iPhone. All I do is text and manually check my mail throughout the day. When I was on 4.2.1, I could open a bunch of apps, check mail frequently, text frequently, use Safari, and still have about 50% battery left; response to any touch is rather sticky, such as texting or sliding the lock slider to unlock; I keep having issues with connecting to the cellular network; app store previews and app store lists use to load super fast and now are laggish.. it takes a while for the icon of the app to show up as well (and I'm in the same area, so I know it's not the connection).
Restore and resets don't work--I get the same kind of performance. What's going on? Hopefully Apple listens to the complaints rather than ignoring them to get people to upgrade.

Same issue with me. I lost a percent about every 2 minutes. I was previously on iOS 4.1.
Here's what I posted in another thread:
    Background: iPhone 3GS ver. iOS 4.1 | iTunes 10.2
Action: Update iOS from 4.1 to 4.3.1 with no issues identified
I skipped iOS 4.3 due to Apple's pattern of initial iOS buggy releases. A lot of iPhone users who upgraded from iOS 4.3 to 4.3.1 state that they did notice a battery life improvement. However, this is a false comparison. Here's my case. How would you make a creditable statement about improved battery life coming from a bad iOS 4.3 which reduced the battery life. A valid comparison would be upgrading prior to iOS 4.3 to iOS 4.3.1. This is my situation and noticed the battery life was not improved, but worse. I tired the following to adjust the battery:
    1. Run the battery down and recharge to 100%. This is suppose to recalibrate it.
    2. Reset using the Home button and the power button
    3. Hard reset (had to reinstall everything) / factory setting
I also noticed there is a increase lag time switching from applications.
I am in agreement that another update will be due.

  • Backup and Anti-virus Questions

    Hello Lenovo community!
It has been about 3 weeks since my 430s arrived in the mail to my doorstep and I have enjoyed every minute of this product immensely compared to my old laptop.
However, as of late I've been getting this weird 'backup' pop that appears telling me my harddisk is full. But when I check my system it doesn't display as full.
It says I have used 84.8 GB out of 198 GB. I don't understand how that's full.
My anti-virus question is..well..I have Avira installed but whenever I try and turn it on, nothing happens? Why is this?
    Thanks.

I agree, lenfall. I like MSE and ESET's NOD32. All AV's have their "moments" with false positives and other issues at one time or another. The tests can be different depending on several variables and who is running them.
