10.7 client very slow to open files on 10.5.8 server
hello,
we have an xserve running 10.5.8 with a connected xraid, which works fine for clients up to 10.6.8
however clients running 10.7 experience very slow opening times of TXTs, RTFs, PDFs and JPGs - strangely the spacebar preview opens all files instantly, but if you try to open the same files with their respective default app (e.g. text edit or preview) it takes up to a minute!
quite obviously this is very frustrating, thus any hints as to what might be causing this would be much appreciated.

Hi, as a suggestion I would run Onyx:- http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/onyx.html
Then I would go the SMC route, you will need to determine the correct SMC procedure for your model.
I would also check/reset the Startup Disc (System Preferences)
Did you add the extra RAM or was it factory fitted? Have you run TechTool?
Are the Apps running via Rosetta?...L

Recently installed Microsoft office 2010 pro and certain excel files are very slow to open. Every other program opens just fine, however when I open certain documents they can take up to 2-3 minutes to open. If I try to open multiple excel documents at the
same time my computer freezes. I disabled all of the add-ons, however it did not do anything. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Go to a folder in Windows Explorer, then Tools ->

Adjust the settings to:

Lion Preview and Textedit very slow when opening files from Leopard Server
My small office (about 10 users) recently upgraded our iMac's, Mac Mini's, and Macbook Pro's. We are experiencing a big problem with Preview opening super slow (1-2 minutes) when trying to open JPG's, PDF's, etc from our 10.5.8 Leopard Server. We have deleted numerous plist files related to Preview, completely deleted Preview.app from one iMac and reinstalled it via Pacifist and still no change in performance. One of the new iMac's does open much faster than the others, but we cannot figure out why this one machine works well and the others don't.
All machines are showing the below error (dozens of times) in Console when trying to open files directly from the server...
sandboxd: ([###]) Preview(###) deny system-fsctl
We have searched the internet for a solution but have not come up with anything that works. This problem exists with Textedit as well. We did try opening a file from one Lion machine to the other and it opened very fast. We also can open files very quickly from older 10.4.11 Tiger machines directly from the server. So the best we can determine right now is Lion and Leopard Server are not playing nicely together.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have pasted (one of) the console log files below for reference.

Mac Dreamweaver CS6 very slow to open files
Hi
My Mac Dreamweaver CS6 opens html files in about 1-2 minutes! It is very very slow. It all works when the file is open but it is the actual opening that is slow.
I have turned off external files but no change.
Any ideas??
Thanks
Mac Pro
Processor 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB
Software Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 (11E53)I've been strugling with this issue for a long time.
I've found that Dreamweaver takes about 2 minutes to open CSS files with @import url for font face.
for example:
@import url(http://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Oswald:400,300);
i've never had problem with big files but if i place this line into my 20k css file, it takes for ever to load.
if i remove it, it opens fast as usual.
Please don't tell me that it could be a Google problem thatis loading slow because it's not.
the font file isnt big enough either.
Of course i have deativated the "load things from external urls" setting.
any ideas on how could this be fixed withoput changing my work style ? -
Dreamweaver very slow when opening files with external links
Is there any way to fix Dreamweaver CS5 (Windows 7, 64bit) when opening files with external references?
For example, I have a very simple CSS file, and toward the top the file has a line that says:
@import url("https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Ubuntu:500,700");
This causes the file to take around 20 seconds to open in DW. If I comment out the line or remove it, the file opens almost instantly. This behaviour is also present in files that contain an SSI.
DW often crashes before being able to open the file and I need to restart the app.
Can I disable DW from attempting to load the references?? It's obviously what is causing the issue IMO and would love to make DW workable again!"Enable Related Files" isn't the fix for this issue. Acrobat 9.3.4 is very slow to open files
Greetings:
I have Acrobat 9.3.4 installed on a Dell Latitude D630 with a 2.4 GHz T7700 Core 2 Duo processor and 4GB of RAM. I re-installed Windows XP SP3 about a month ago due to some USB issues. The motherboard was replaced prior to that to try to resolve the USB issues, but the culprit turned out to be corrupted Windows USB drivers. There were other issues with IE which I was unable to resolve without an O/S re-install, so I went ahead and re-installed XP.
The laptop has been running great for the last four weeks and I've had Acrobat 9 installed on the laptop since then, too. It was functioning fine until yesterday. While opening a PDF file on my local hard drive, I saw no disk or CPU activity or any sign that Acrobat was even starting. I opened up Windows Task Manager and saw that Acrobat had started but was "not responding". About 30 seconds after I attempted to start Acrobat, the file finally opened and browsing performance in the file was fine.
I have repaired my Acrobat installation (essentially a 10 minute re-install) and that did nothing to improve the startup speed. I have not knowingly changed any Acrobat settings in the last four weeks. I appreciate any suggestions you may have which may improve this situation. Thanks!First let me disclose that I am not an expert nor even much less. However I used to have this slow as a turtle opening of FF until I got rid of my antivirus software which at the time was Avast. I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials and have had no problems since. FF loads in 3 to 4 seconds!

Acrobat 9.5.3 - very slow to open files
Recently, opening a file with Acrobat has started an excruciatingly long time - sometimes as long as 30-60 seconds for a small file. What makes the problem even more frustrating is that files sometime open within a reasonable period of time. No, the problem is not related to other background tasks - this is new behavior and my usage patterns have not changed.
Is anyone else experiencing this problem (running a fully patched Win 7 x64 system)? More importantly, has anyone figured out how to resolve the problem? I would consider trying to revert to 9.5.2, but there is no easy way to do that.Had the same problem on Windows XP after Installing Patch 9.3.3.
The problem could be solved by reseting the user settings.
Rename the following REGKEYS:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Adobe \ Acrobat Reader
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Adobe \ Adobe Acrobat
to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Adobe \ Acrobat Reader_Old
HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Adobe \ Adobe Acrobat_Old
The keys are created at the next start with the basic settings. -
CS4 apps are VERY slow to open Windows file browser with File Open or File Save As commands
We are running CS4 on Windows 7 with all available updates installed. Photoshop and the other CS4 applications are VERY slow to open a Windows file browsing window to select files when File Open or File Save As menu options are run -- it can take as long as a minute or two for the window to open. Once the window opens and a file is selected, then opening or saving the file is very quick. The location of the default directory, whether it is on a local drive or a network drive, makes no difference. Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

The link that I posted earlier is off. Read this one
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2501584. I discovered in my network that the MS Office File Validation Patch made excel crawl when opening over the network though nothing else changed. At the time I was opening Excel on Office 2003.
You can manually turn this off by editing the registry and tunring it off. Going forward I skipped the patch to keep my sanity. Not sure if this is the same as your issue, but the support article will go into detail how to either have Fix it
clear the issue or change the proper registry keys.
Hope this helps -

CS4 File info dialog very slow to open and respond. Every click or or key stroke takes more than 1 second to record. I have try multiple changes in the performance preferences and nothing has an affect. This is the only dialog box in the program that has the problem. The problem started when I uninstalled and reinstalled because of problems with the program freezing. I have changed every setting in the preferences performance section back and forth including 3 different amounts of memory usage (lo hi and recommended) restarting PS every time and nothing works. I would appreciate any help, keeping in mind that there have been no changes to the PC and it worked fine for a long time (approx 1/12 years) previous to the reinstall. Why my Illustrator CC is now very slow for opening a 2MB AI file (about 5 minutes), at the beginning (1 month ago) it was very fast (10 seconds).
Assuming that you system meets minimal requirements for CC, make sure you have enough space on your hard drive. By saying enough, I try not to cross 3/4 of its capacity but trivially saying, the more free space the better and the faster the drive the better (I've been considering an SSD drive but still running a regular HDD).
If you are on Windows, clean up the %TEMP% folder regularly and keep the disk neat using the defragmentation tool.
Click Start>Run>enter %temp% , wait for the files to load and select all, hit Shift+DEL to remove them permanently.
For the defrag tool, you can use either the defrag /? command from the command line or right-click the drive, click Properties > Tools > Defragmentation>Defragment Now
Other than that it requires deeper analysis to find performance bottleneck. -
Open and Save Dialogs Very Slow to Open and Populate
In all of my apps, the Open and Save dialogs have become +very slow+ to open and populate since installing Snow Leapoard.
This only happens on one of my machines, and not others. (I've unmounted all connected drives, just to eliminate that possibility.)
Any thoughts on what this could be. The delay is significant (and feels like the old days of Windows, which I thought I'd left behind). The problem now appears to have gone away. The only change I've made is that I replaced an external drive that had recently died with a new one and gave it the same name as the failed drive.
Could a the dead drive have left something behind (or failed to leave something behind) that is stumbled over (or looked for and not found) each time the file system was accessed, and that got cleaned up (or re-created) when the new drive was connected and renamed? -
Reader 9.1.0 Crashes or slow when opening files over a network
Hello all. I am having a problem with Reader 9.1. I have files that are on another computer that are accessed on other computers on the network. There is a need for up to 21 of these files to be open at one time. As we update the information on them we close them. At random times and intervals, Reader either is very slow to open up the file, around 5min. and other times it just locks up the computer and a restart is required. Is this a limitation of the program to work with files on another system? I do not know much about Reader it's self, but do windows. Any help with this matter will be greatly appreciated. I have included the System Paramaters and Installed Plug-ins reports generated in Reader. I have also tried updating Reader with the lates patch, but that just makes it worse.
Sorry, my email got cut off. I'll post it again...

AW6 is very very slow at opening PICT Docs
I have noticed that AppleWorks 6 is very very slow at opening Apple PICT Documents. The memory of AW6 jumps up tp over 1GB and it takes several minutes (if at all) to open these files. Which happen to open fine in OS 9.
Any idea what has happened to cause these files to not open or be very very slow? The original file is only 22KB.
I have noticed some of my drawing programs (Canvas x) fails to open these as well. However, Canvas 5 (OS 9) works fine.
I have a G4 with OS 10.4.9 and 986MB.
Thanks

I have an iMac, running x10.5. My email is very slow, even opening a previously downloaded message. The computer is otherwise fast. What gives?
Go to your User's Library folder. (if you don't know how to find, see this link.)
Scroll to Mail folder.
Select the V2 > MailData folder.
Delete any files in MailData with envelope in the name. (should be 3)
When you open Mail it will re-index your files.
If you have IMAP accounts, you might want to delete the accounts then add back so they download all messages from the server again. -
