10.7 install to external drive results in only "user" account

There is a problem which I have had couple of times when installing OS X Lion onto an external drive while running 10.7 off of the internal drive. The problem is that the OS install on the external drive gets created with only one user account, the same user account as what's running on the internal drive during install, except on the external drive the user account does not have admin privileges. So when booted off the external drive, there's no way to act as administrator, including upping the only account's privileges you have access to!
The only way to get an admin account on the OS instance on the external drive is to delete the hidden AppleSetupDone file on the external drive and then boot and let the OS go through its first run procedure.
Obviously the design team for OS X Lion one of the install as streamlined with the user being presented with the fewest choices and questions during the install is possible. However, not being presented with choices about the number and types of user accounts that will be set up during such an install clearly has its downside.
If the install on the external drive is going to duplicate the account that's currently running during the install, then it should at least copy those privileges as well. Ending up with an OS instance with no account with admin privileges is obviously not acceptable.

Wrong again.
Have you ever installed to an external drive while booted 10.7 from the internal? I have, multiple times, and always the same result. I end up with the same account I was booted into on the internal at the time of install, duplicated on the external drive. Same account name, same password, and it's a *user* account. Not admin.
Here's what I do:
While booted on my MBP 13" internal hard drive, I open and run the 10.7 installer contained in "InstallESD", with the installation target being my external USB drive. The install finishes, the computer reboots off the external drive. No "Bienvenue, Welcome, Aloha etc.", no catchy music, no setup steps or installation completion. Just a login screen. I put in the login info for my account on the internal hard drive, and there I am, booted into the external drive, as *user*.
Greg
Right YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG!!!!!
Sorry but I am not wrong.
Boot the system from either the Recovery HD partition or if you have a Lion Install USB thumb drive boot from that. Then select Re-Install OS X and point it to the external drive. Do not start the Install from inside the OS installed on the internal drive.
I thought that would be apparent, but I guess not.
If you have not made a Lion install USB thumb drive I suggest you do that using LionDiskMaker.

  • How to restrict External Drive access in other user accounts

I just purchased an external HD and moved my iTunes and iPhoto libraries to it. No problem there.
My Mac mini has four user accounts and I'd like to set the permissions on the external HD so that only I can write to it from my account. I'm attempting to do this through 'Get Info' on the external drive, then setting Sharing & Permissions to 'Read and Write' for myself and 'Read only' for the other three accounts. But it seems that when I set one of these it gets set for all four accounts.
Am I doing something wrong trying to set the permissions this way, or, is there a better way to do it?
    Thanks,
    Andy

I didn't realize you could set the privileges for other user accounts in the 'Get Info' box from my account. I added the names of the other three accounts and set them to 'Read Only' but I am still able to delete files from the drive when I'm logged into those accounts.
What I'm trying to do is set it up so that either (1) they can't accidentally delete files from the external disk or (2) they can't even see the disk at all from those accounts. I would have thought that 'Read Only' would not allow them to delete files, but with the privilege set to 'Read Only' I'm still able to delete files from the disk.
Maybe I'm missing a step? Or maybe there's another way to do it?
    Thanks,
    Andy

  • TS1550 OSX Upgrade (Mountain Lion) turned external drive to "read-only" and now I can not do back-ups on time machine.  How do I fix this?

I recently upgraded to mountain lion, latest version OS and now my external drives are read-only.  They are formatted Mac OS Extended and I have been using one of them for Time Machine.  How do I fix?

  • OS X Mavericks won't complete install on external drive

Hi.  I have the new Mac Pro (late 2013) with all software updated.  I have a 2TB external ATA drive attached with USB 3.0.
I wanted to install OS X on the external drive and had to use the Command R method.  The computer restarted and started the install process.  I used disk utility to erace the external drive.  I did exactly what Apple instructed.  I created a new single partition and set everything as instructed by Apple.
I then ran the install and it took 30+ minutes to install OS X.  It said the computer would re-start at the end of the download, which it did.  BUT, it didn't restart on the new drive.  It's as if it couldn't then find the external drive and it rebooted on my normal internal drive.  I did EVERYTHING all over again and got the same result.
There are now files on my external drive in a folder called "OS X Install Data" but I don't see the OS X installer file.  I think the computer was supposed to detect the external and complete the install but it didn't.
What is wrong and what do I do to avoid this problem or fix it?  Can I continue the process with the files on the external drive?
PS - I first tried to install the OS X Mavericks installer file from the App Store but it told me that I could not install Mavericks on my computer.  I believe the version on the new Mac Pros is differnent and I read you have to get it from the Internet using the Command R method.
I've used the Command R method on my old Mac Pro and it worked fine.  Something is wrong here.
    Thank you in advance!

BTW, clarification:  The hard drive is in a USB 3.0 enclosure made by DAT Optic.  It works great as an external drive but can't figure out why I can't get the OS installed on it.
Given that the files were downloaded to the external drive, I then tried this approach:
    http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/apple-in-the-enterprise/how-to-create-a-bootabl e-usb-to-install-os-x-mavericks/
It didn't work.  WhenI booted I got the null sign error.  Even though all the files are on the drive just as described in this above link, it still doesn't work.  And the files on the drive are not the typcial folders that indicate a full OS was installed. There are many files that look like they are used to create an OS.
How the heck can I get OS X Mavericks to install completely on a hard drive that is in a USB enclosure?

  • Skype installed as external drive rather than application?

I realise that this is most likely something very basic but it remains beyond my abilities as someone not yet familiar with Macs. My wife installed Skype on our MacBook but it has appeared as an external drive - every time we turn the mac on Skype launches automatically. How can we switch this to a simple application that we can launch as and when we choose? Thanks for any help.

Start by opening Accounts preferences. Click on Login Items. Locate the Skype entry and delete it. Next check in the Applications folder for the Skype application. If it's not there then most likely you never installed it from the disc image download. Locate the .dmg file you downloaded with Skype then double-click on it to mount the disc image on the Desktop. If a window doesn't open automatically then double-click on the disk icon to open a Finder window. Drag the Skype application from that window to your Applications folder. Then unmount the disc image. You're done.

  • Install to external drive: good or bad idea

I have an iMac that is currently on 10.5.5. However, it was originally a Tiger install. I performed an update install to 10.5.6 and while it runs, I have stability issues that came with the Tiger -> Leopard update that I know I can eliminate by doing a clean install.
Of course, the problem with a clean install is that the total execution time is very lengthy (from install to last app license re-registered) and my workstation is DOA (or nearly so) until completion. And then, there's always the odd detail I forgot about that I have to research to find the answer.
So, why can't or shouldn't I do the following, or how to make it better?
    1) Do a clean install to an external drive (I have a 500 GB USB drive I can use) Leave the internal drive intact until step #4.
    2) Install the OS, apps and utilities until it matches my current machine.
    3) Once ready, back up the internal drive to the external drive as a DMG. (BTW: there will be another time machine BU on another machine on the network -- so there will be redundancy.)
    4) Do a secure 7-pass erase of the internal hard disk (this performs hardware-managed low-level sector checks, turning off sectors that error on read/write)
    5) Use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the external data to the internal boot disk
    6) Copy my documents from the backup to the new user folder.
    7) Viola! Reinstallation complete but I can access my data at nearly any time (latency depends on current task) if I must (except during #4)
Where's the fly in this ointment?
    TIA!

However, is there a way of achieving zero-ing out defective sectors, like SpinRite, <http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm> without my having to remove the hard disk?
AFAIK, SpinRite does not actually "zero out" defective sectors in modern IDE hard drives. To better understand what it does (& in general the link between analog & digital data reading mechanisms in magnetic media), look beyond the brochures & study the “What's Under The Hood” technical note at http://www.grc.com/files/technote.pdf, especially the "Surface Analysis" section beginning on page 9.
SpinRite's makers want you to believe that "weak" sectors are something to be very concerned about, in effect that reputable drive makers design their modern high density drives (ones several generations beyond those using MFM) to regularly rely on these 'defective' sectors to boost capacity, & that only SpinRite's technology will map them out before they cause data loss. This is a dubious idea at best. The techniques used in SpinRite's surface analysis are essentially the same ones modern ATA drives use to monitor for "grown defects" -- except that modern ATA drives contain their own highly capable, purpose-designed proprietary hardware & dedicated operating systems that SpinRite can access only indirectly through clever use of standardized extensions to the ATA command set to do what the drive does anyway.
This is not to say that the product is without merit. It is primarily purposed as a data recovery tool, & for this the extended, low level statistical analysis of the 'raw' analog data from unreliable sectors is a powerful (if not unique to this product) method of data recovery.
There is also some merit to the idea of proactive early detection of unreliable sectors that if used for data storage would eventually require the drive to struggle & perhaps to fail to get 'clean' data from them. (I believe this is what you mean by "zero-ing out defective sectors," just in more technically precise terms.) However, be aware that drives already do this, just with actual data instead of specially designed signals, & in general this is enough to detect sectors that are going bad before the data becomes unrecoverable, at which point the drive moves the data to another sector & maps out the first one to prevent its future use.
In real world terms, these unrecoverable 'hard" errors due to grown defects are very rare in healthy drives, only becoming problematic in drives that are dying, typically because of head crashes, exceeding operating or storage temperature limits, or other traumatic events that affect the magnetic media layer. So something like SpinRite's surface scan is most useful for extending the life of a drive that has already become unreliable or for prescreening drives for gross manufacturing defects. Since the first use makes little economic sense in these days of cheap hard drives & the second use is potentially superfluous because gross defects would likely be quickly detected anyway, users must judge for themselves if using the product for this is worth it.
(The same considerations apply for deciding if or when the frequently seen user advice to 'zero out the drive' as part of preparing it for use accomplishes anything of real worth or not.)
Finally, getting back to the idea of moving the drive to a PC to run SpinRite & why I think it doesn't actually "zero out" defective sectors, I can think of no way it can force the drive to actually map out a sector unless the drive itself determines it should do so. This leaves the alternative of marking the sector in use in the file system's directory structures, which in effect would accomplish the same purpose, but with one important exception: its effectiveness is dependent on the file system remaining in place on the drive. IOW, if a user changed the file system of the volume or changed the partition scheme, the file system metadata marking the sector as in use would be lost, & SpinRite's surface scan would have to be done again after these changes to get it back.
I want to make it clear that I am not certain that this alternative, file system based method of achieving what Spinrite claims it can do is actually how it works, but I can find nothing in the product's documentation that contradicts or conflicts with it, nor am I aware of any standard extension to the ATA command set that would allow SpinRite to directly set the grown defect list. If someone has info that shows I'm wrong, please post it. I have no problem abandoning theories that don't pan out.

  • Mountain Lion install onto external drive?

I installed Mountain Lion onto an external Hard Drive that had a bootable Snow Leopard installed by mistake while I was booted from Snow Leopard on my iMac. It seems to work and I am able to access files and applications on the external drive when booted from the Mountain Lion external drive. Mail works, Drop Box works. I thought you have to be booted from the drive to which you want to upgrade the operating system. Have I missed something here or should I start over to first boot from the external drive and then do the upgrade to Mountain Lion?

You can upgrade from either disk. The install program allows you to select where do you want to install Mountain Lion.

  • File Sharing - External Drive - Unable to add user

    Hello,
I am trying to share a folder within an external firewire drive. However, when in the "File Sharing" section, I am unable to add users after adding the folder to the "Shared Folders:". The add user dialog appears, but when a user is selected and the "Select" button is clicked, the user does not appear in "Users:".
The external drive is formatted "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with an Apple Partition Map.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

try adding this user from finder rather than fro system preferences. select this folder in finder and enter command+i. in the resulting popup go to the permissions section and add the user you want.

  • Is it possible to use Boot Camp to partition an external hard drive so there is a OSX partition and a Windows partiton?  I want to use the external drive for backup only, NOT to load Windows and NOT to use as a boot drive.

I have partitioned the internal hard drive and am running Lion and Win7 Pro on my iMac i5 2.7GHz with 16GB RAM.  Can I use Boot Camp to create a Windows partition on an OSX external hard drive to use for backing up both systems to the same HDD?  I do NOT want to install OSX Lion or Windows 7 Professional on the external drive.  I do NOT want to boot either system from the external drive.  The 3TB external drive is for backup only.

Use NTFS for Windows and buy Paragon NTFS for OS X
You can also try Paragon HFS for Windows
As long as you are using for data and backups, you can leave the drive as GPT too.
I would recommend strongly to always have a 2nd bootable Mac OS drive, only need 30GB partition. System maintenance. Though LIon Recovery Mode finally makes it less but not totally unneeded.
And yes you can use Windows to create a partition.
Boot Camp is too broad. Do you want or mean BC Assistant? not needed but probably possible.
MBR has trouble with 3TB drives.

  • External Drive is read-only

When I start up my external drive, which used to be my Time Machine drive (but hasn't been for 4 months) I get a message: "The disk "" was not repairable by the computer. It is being made available to you with limited functionality. You must back up your data and reformat the disk as soon as possible." Does this mean I have to get another external drive (I'm running low on cash - thanks, college!) back up all my files on this drive to the new one? I've tried DiskUtility, and this is what happens:
    Invalid sibling link
The volume "" needs to be repaired.
*Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed.*
    Help, please!!

    If you did a +*Verify DIsk,*+ do +*Repair Disk.+* There's a (small) chance it can fix it.
If that gets the same results, and you already have a heavy-duty 3rd-party disk repair app, such as +Disk Warrior+ (4.1.1 or later), it might be able to repair it.
If not, your only choice is to reformat the disk. This will, of course, erase it, so if you want to keep whatever's on it, you'll have to copy it elsewhere (if it can be copied), reformat, then copy back.
That may or may not work; if the disk itself is failing, there's nothing you can do to fix it.

  • External drive is read only under mountain lion?

I have a firewire external drive which is used for Time Machine backups and my iPhoto + iTunes libraries.
Since installing Mountain Lion, the disc is now reported to be Read Only, meaning none of the three uses above work.
A quick google search shows that I am not the only one with this roblem.
Has anyone got any suggestions? Rebooting & remounting the drive both fail to help.
    Looks like a ML bug....

I had the same problem.  Right click on the drive and hit "Get Info".  Under "Sharing and Permissions" make sure everone, especially "everyone" is labeled "read & write".  I did this and it works now.

  • Putting some music files on an external drive, but keeping only one library

I know how to keep two libraries, one on an external drive, and one on my HD...but I'd like to know how to do this:
move some of my music files off of my HD and to my external drive, but maintain the same library (and only one) on my HD. So...when iTunes opens, I see all of the music files in the database, and if I choose a song that physically resides on the HD, it plays it from there, and if I choose one that physically resides on the external drive, it plays it from there. I want to free up space on my HD, but I don't want to have to keep two separate libraries.
    Any help is appreciated!

It's easy. After you split the music you can add the music from the different locations to the library and it will play them from wherever they're at. The important thing to do is to go into *System Preferences* in iTunes Advanced and uncheck the *Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library* or iTunes will put duplicates in what ever iTunes Music folder you have iTunes pointed at. This folder is only important when you are adding content that you do want copied to the Library, such as from a CD.
I use this for my iTunes music and movies that is stored three different drives. One is a network drive.

  • Moving music to external drive and combining multiple itunes accounts to 1

Some how I have a couple of different itunes accounts. I had itunes before I got an iphone and bought some music that i listened to on my mac. Then i got an ipod and bought music. Then got an iphone and bought more stuff. And then my new iPhone 4. But the music is all on different "accounts" sort of. When I open my itunes I have under "store"
    Purchased
    Purchased on Susan's iphone
    Purchased on Susan's iphone
But I can't combine them all together on my current iphone 4, yet I bought all those audio books and music!
I asked at the Apple store and they said move all the music to an external drive then plug in the phone and when it asks if I want to do something or other (sheesh I can't remember it all) say yes and it will make one account, delete some of the music, then move the music that is on the drive into that account.
So I have an external hard drive. I have itunes open. I don't want to delete anything until i'm sure I'm going to have it all on the external drive. And i have no idea what to do next. I thought i could just make a folder on the external drive and drag the music there but thats not working, it won't drag. And I have audio books that i bought but can only listen to on the computer it seems i can't move them to the iphone! What a mess.
    Can someone help!
    Susan

I wrote this a bit prematurely. When I got around to syncing my ipod again that contained the games, they reappeared in itunes. Perhaps this will help someone else.
