10.8.1 won't let me upgrade

This new to me computer will not let me upgrade to 10.8.5 from 10.8.1 (fresh install).  The App Store is not showing any updates.
I just purchase a used mid 2010 Mac Pro to replace my 2008 Mac Pro (It's Protools related... don't ask).  The previous owner said that he had wiped the drive and had restored the computer back to the original version of Lion that the computer came with.  So when I got home, I plugged in the computer and booted from a Mountain Lion USB flash drive that I had made when I had originally purchased ML for my 2008 Mac Pro.
Install seemed to go fine at first.  I attempted to restore some settings from my Time Machine Backup but I kept getting a JavaApplication install error.  I checked the OS and it was 10.8.1.  I went to App Store app and looked for upgrades to get me back to 10.8.5 but it said there were none.  I restarted and was still having the problems with the JavaApp pop up and no updates in the App Store.
I then rebooted from the USB stick and repaired permissions twice.  I rebooted and while the JavaApp pop up was no longer annoyingly popping up every 2 seconds, I still was not being given the option to upgrade past 10.8.1.
Figuring that maybe something could have gone wrong with the time machine restore, I rebooted from the stick again, wiped the drive again and reinstalled again.  This time I skipped the restore and left most of my info blank.  I then went straight to the app store and still nothing.  I tried searching for similar problems on apple forums.  Found a list of preferences to trash.  Tried that and nothing happened.  I tried re-downloading the Mountain Lion installer but I can't tell if it's the latest version or the version I bought and as it is well after midnight, I am trepidatious regarding running it just to find out I'm in the same situation.
The apple support page brings me to a list of upgrades and security updates but when I click on the links there are no downloads except for the very last one for 10.8.5.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

You can run the 10.8.5 combo and 10.8.5 supplemental installers, instead of going through the frequently wonky App Store:

  • I have an iPod touch from about three years ago.  I would like to know if there is a limit on the upgrade versions because it won't let me upgrade to version 4.3  I have version 4.2.1 and it won't let me upgrade further

I have an iPod that is about three years old.  I am trying to download an appf rom the app store and it says trhat I need a version 4.3 or higher.  My iPOd has version 4.2.1 right now and iTunes tells me that my iPod is up to date.  It won't let me upgrade any higher.  Is there a limit or can I get a newer version another way?

Yes, there's a limit, and that iPod touch has reached it.

I have a MacBook Pro 17" that meets all criteria on this list but it still won't let me upgrade... Help.
To install Mavericks, you need one of these Macs:
MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)  **** Maybe my MacBook Pro is early 2007 ? How do I find that out? ****
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed ***YES
2 GB or more of memory ***YES
8 GB or more of available space ***YES
    Last Modified: Nov 6, 2013

Then your model cannot upgrade to Mountain Lion or Mavericks. That is why you could not download it. You can upgrade to Lion, however.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.

  • IPhoto won't let me upgrade to 9.2.3 from 9.2.1

When I launch iPhoto, it says in the about box that it is 9.2.1.  Occasionally, it reminds me there is an update for 9.2.3.  I click OK to run software update, but software update tells me there are no updates available.
I then go to Apple's download page to download the 9.2.3 upgrade DMG.  After downloading and trying to install, it says that I need iPhoto 9.1 or later for the upgrade to work.
Clearly, there is some problem where the Mac thinks I have an old version of iPhoto and won't let me upgrade, but iPhoto itself knows what version it is.
Searching on these forums, I haven't found anything like this.  Ideas?

How old is your Mac? If it's very recent you need to update via the App Store
If you purchased at the App Store you need to update via the App Store
Otherwise you update via Softare Update
If you have moved iPhoto from the default location (i.e. into a Folder) then the updater won't find it. Move it back.
If you have renamed iPhoto, the updater won't find it. Change it back.

  • HT201364 My computer meets the requirements to upgrade to Yosemite, but it won't let me upgrade.  Can anyone help?

I have a mid 2007 Macbook pro, plenty of memory, and OS X Lion 10.7 but the app store won't let me upgrade to Yosemite.  Can anyone help?

Check that your computer is compatible with Mountain Lion/Mavericks/Yosemite.
To check the model number hold down the option/alt key, go to the Apple menu and select System Information.

I want to give an iPad to my wife to use for work, but her employer won't let her upgrade her Macbook from Leopard to Lion.  It's pointless if she can't use iCloud.  Is there a workaround?

So far Apple has not upgraded the other Mac OS X versions to iCloud.  She can manually enter information to be synced in the cloud but that is really tedious.

  • IPhoto won't let me upgrade to 9.6

When I try to upgrade to iPhoto 9.6 the upgrade says "Not Responding".  It won't let me upgrade, so now I can't even get to my photos.  Please help!

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • It won't let me upgrade to newest version of Firefox...it's telling me I don't have sufficient privileges for some of the items. Why?

It won't let me upgrade to newest version of Firefox...it's telling me I don't have sufficient privileges for some of the items. Why?

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the DMG file to the desktop
    * Firefox 6.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
    * Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data.

Justin, did you ever upgrade to 7.2?
What did you have before? I am using 7.1.1 but need to use 7.2 or later for a $49 orange shuffle.
I want to avoid 7.6 at all costs, so let me know if 7.2 is OK for you.

  • SMC 1.13f3 won't let me upgrade

I've read about upgrading the SMC to version 1.4f12, but it won't let me do it. I have version 1.13f3, downloaded the update, and it says "this computer does not need this update." Any ideas why its like this? On a side note, under full load, my CPU temp is up around 80C, which is pretty dang hot. I heard that the SMC update helps this (whether the sensor is wrong or what).
    Thanks

The reason you can't install the update is because the 1.13f3 firmware is the proper version for the C2D MacBook.
The 1.4f12 version is only installable on CD MacBooks.
As for your second question, reaching 80C is a little warm, but acceptable for 100% CPU usage as long as the fan ramps up and cools the MacBook down.

An update: I tried manually entering Restore Mode with TinyUmbrella and then rstoring it from the IPSW I have downloaded, but for some reason it's not letting me because it's incompatible in some way. I've also tried using my SIM with my old phone and it won't recognize it. I guess the only thing I can do is follow deggie's suggestion and get a new MicroSIM. Thanks!
