10.8.2 Messes Up USB

I just updated to 10.8.2 today and it's playing merry **** with my USB devices. When I boot up I get multiple USB power warning dialogs even though everything was fine before and there were no new devices added. Now my magic mouse is connecting directly to my Mac Pro's internal bluetooth hardware, which is something I don't want because it's utterly unusable, but that's another story...
Is anybody else having similar issues?

I posted it to the Apple bugreporter, too. I thought it would be a good idea to post it agin in this forum, so people would be able to google for this bug, and possible others could point to related information such as affected commercial fonts or whether this issue has already been identified.
I'm sorry the download link doesn't work. It worked at first. I don't know whether the bandwidth limit has already been reached (I doubt that) or whether a tripod bans file downloading. Here is another way to get the file for the time being:

While it should be technically correct, I don't understand why anyone would build a font this way. It couldn't be any easier to copy the shape from one cell to another. Why try and reference?
It keeps the font size down. There are a number of signs that look the same, especially the accents, for instance U+02CA MODIFIER LETTER ACUTE ACCENT «ˊ» and U+0301 COMBINING ACUTE ACCENT «́» (U+02CF MODIFIER LETTER LOW ACUTE ACCENT «ˏ» and U+0317 COMBINING ACUTE ACCENT BELOW «̗» may be just turned versions of the first two). And since a glyph can be composed of several references, this is a common way of building precomposed accented characters such as U+00E9 LATIN SMALL LETTER E WITH ACUTE «é» etc.
If you wish, I guess you could build an entire font with nothing but references to the characters «c» and «i».

  • USB latency? (messed up USB)

Ok... this is a weird one. Anything USB related on my emac gets super slow over a period of time. The only way to "reset the clock", so to speak, is to restart the computer. The slowing down seems roughly linear, the longer my computer goes without a restart, the slower it takes for a thumb drive to mount, for my scanner to scan, etc. It's not any one thing, I've tried all the usb things I have. This is really inconveinient because every time I want to leave the house and throw something on my usb drive, I have to stop and restart the computer. I'm out of ideas. I've rebooted, upgraded to Tiger, done all the updates, and repaired permissions. Help!!!!

John, welcome to the discussions, 2 things that might help.
1st always periodicllly check with your periperials Manufactures sites to make sure you have the latest updates to them for Tiger.
2nd Otentimes after extended use over a period of time there can be a buill-up of garbage that can acumulate on your hard drive and slow things down. Tiger is suppose to empty all these little bugers automaticly, but I still prefer to run these 3 Free Utilitys in the order I give them to you and this way I know that I am clean and green, I run them once a week need to or not and never have any issues at all with any of my periperials.
    1st is Macjanitor

  • PT880 & SP2: Complete mess with USB devices!

    Hi all!
I'm aware that this is an old nut, but here goes:
    - I have a fine new PT880 Neo LTR board in my new HTPC. Here's the setup:
    MOBO: MSI PT880 FSR
PSU: Tagan 480 (GREAT piece of work!)
CPU: P4 2.8 Northwood w/ HT - not overclocked (I want quiet, not fast)
    RAM: 2x 256 Kinsington ValueRam
    VID: ATI Radeon 9500 @ 9700 (softmod)
    HD: Barracuda 7200.7 IDE - 120 G
DVD: Int. DVDR + USB 2.0 External DVD (own power)
    SOUND: Chaintech AV-710
    TV: Hauppage WinTV for PAL
CASE: Homebrew - Wood & Plexiglas
CASE FAN: Papst 8412 NGMLV (on 12v Molex)
    CPU FAN: Zalman CNPS6500B-Cu
    LCD: 4x20 (LPT1 & Molex)
MOUSE & KEYBOARD: MS radio remote
REMOTE: ATI Remote Wonder - USB
    OS: XP SP2
My problem is with my USB peripherals. Here's what I have:
    A) On an unpowered USB 1.1 4 way hub in Room 1:
       - Simple, cheap USB Keyboard
       - Logitech Trackball USB
       - ATi Remote Wonder I
    B) On a powered D-Link 7-port USB 2.0 Hub in Room 2 (connected by 5m USB 2.0 spec USB cable)
       - MS Wireless Multimedia Mouse & Keyboard set connected over USB (Room 2)
       - Benq GEm 6024DP external DVD player (has own power supply)
       - Xitel AN1 MD USB sound card
       - (sometimes) older 1.1 USB HP 5200C Scanjet (has own power supply)
    Yeah - that's a lot of stuff.
The problem is *not* the two mice & keyboards. I was almost expecting them to clash, but they don't. Everything seems to be fine there.
The problems are connected, in order of ascending severity to:
    - The Benq DVD player (least often, generally OK). Just a little squirrely in reading, lots of errors. Caused a system crash the first time I plugged it in.
    - ATI Wonder - occasionally "plays dead" - i.e. accepts no inputs - a few times, pressing a button has caused a system crash.
    - Xitel AN1 MD: often plays dead - after a reboot is usually not recognized as present by OS until I unplug and replug. Occasionally causes a system crash. When it's in the system takes a HECK of along time to boot - between the POST screen and the Windows XP screen it just sits blank for almost a minute.
    - Scanjet: worked pn first install, but is now always dead. Scan button doesn't provoke system event, trying to access the scanner through software either hangs scan program or crashes entire system. When it's in, a boot takes even longer!
I actually reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled XP from scratch, downloaded SP2, then installed the peripherals one after another, always installing any drivers first and rebooting after each new peripheral. It hasn't helped - I've ended up where I left off. Without the Xitel and Scanjet the system is pretty much OK. Without the ATI Wonder, it's rock solid.
Note: I should mention that I have NOT plugged in the MOBO's second USB port, since I'm actually only using two ports on the motherboard. I shouldalso mention that there are some ground hum issues betweenthe two rooms - however, plugging all the peripherals into an extension chord taken from a single socket hasn't shown any clear improvement.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here?

...I *never* solved the problem - and there is something basially wrong with my USB system...at the moment XP lists all of my "VIA 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller"s are set at (PCI) 21 - which, as I understand it, is a shared or virtual IRQ. What this means, I have no idea.
I have a PT880, no USB troubles that I am aware of, but this thread caught my eye.
I have four such "VIA 5 or later USB Host Controller" entries, and they are listed as:
    PCI bus 0, device 16, function 0
    PCI bus 0, device 16, function 1
    PCI bus 0, device 16, function 2
    PCI bus 0, device 16, function 3
and while under Resources every one of them uses IRQ 21, they each have a different I/O range. FWIW!
EDIT: BTW I recently learned to my dismay that the MS driver for USB scanners (usbscan.sys) only handles one device at a time, which in my case means I can't plug-in my camera when my scanner is connected! How cheesy is THAT? So you may be encountering "known limitations" in Windows w/all the gizmos you are trying to use.

  • 1GB 1st Generation iPod Nano USB Device Not Recognized on any computer

I just recently received a free 1st generation 1GB iPod nano from a friend because they couldn't get it to work. I figured I'd take a crack at it and hopefully get a working, free iPod out of the deal...
It already had music loaded on it (mostly a bunch of garbage), so like anyone else in my position I proceeded to reformat the little sucker and wipe its slate clean.
Here is what happens when I try to connect the nano to ANY computer:
Here is how the nano shows up in device manager:
This was the original problem I was having with my desktop PC which is running Windows XP Home with SP2 and all the latest Windows updates. It is running iTunes 7.5.0.20, w/ latest iPod updater software version 1.2.3.
Prior to testing the 1st gen. 1GB iPod nano, I had been charging and syncing my 5th generation 60GB iPod classic on my desktop PC using the same exact cable. All of my USB ports are in working, functional condition and order. I even have “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” unchecked under USB Root Hub Properties.
I tried a couple different USB ports and I used another cable, no luck. So I moved on to my Fujitsu laptop running Windows Media Center Edition, all latest Windows updates, same version of iTunes and iPod software (the difference being that I DO NOT sync any iPods to it, nor do I have any music on it). SAME EXACT PROBLEM, same message bubble, same entry in device manager, and same lack of driver availability.
Thinking maybe it’s just a “PeeCee” thing I dug out my old PowerBook G4 running the ancient Mac OS 10.2. Keep in mind this thing only has a 400 MHz G4 processor, 512MB RAM, 30GB hardrive, and USB 1.1 ports. The iPod nano wouldn’t even give a hint that it existed when I plugged it in.
I have tried every single little Apple trick available. I’ve done the forced restart while connected and while not connected to the computer. I’ve done forced disk mode while connected and while not. I’ve run iTunes diagnostic tests on connected devices. I’ve messed with USB port settings. I’ve tried two different USB 2.0 iPod cables. I tested my dad’s 8GB 2nd generation iPod nano to see if it linked up with my desktop and my laptop IT DOES. I even tried my 60GB 5th gen iPod classic OVER AGAIN to see if it still worked, IT DOES.
Also, this 1st gen iPod nano will not charge when hooked to the computer through USB. When I plug it in, between the time it’s plugged in and when the “USB device recognized” bubble pops up the battery icon shows it is charging, but as soon as that bubble pops up it disappears and discontinues pretending to charge.
On my Fujitsu laptop, I uninstalled everything having to do with Apple. I uninstalled iTunes, Apple Software Update, everything. Restarting after it all of course. Then I installed the old iPod Software Updater from 6-28-2006. I was pretty sure this wouldn’t work because the iPod isn’t even recognized by the computer. In order for the iPod to work in the iPod Software Updater or iTunes it has to first be recognized at the basic Windows level. Which it isn’t…
I have done research all across the net and the only real answer I found was that the iPod Nano’s internal USB controller is dead. I’m 99% sure it has nothing to do with my laptop, desktop, USB cables, software, or drivers. What do you guys think?

Nope I have not figured anything out since I posted this. The closest answer I've found is that it's the internal USB controller which has gone bad. If that's the case than there is really nothing more I can do.
I did find one opening and that was the diagnostic screen. You get to it by holding down the Menu and Center buttons, as soon as the iPod resets hold down the Left and Center buttons, the iPod will beep and then it will go to a diagnostic screen. Maybe somewhere in there you can find the problem I don't know how to use it though.

  • MSI MPOWER Renesas USB 3 problem WINDOWS 8 64x

    Hi

    Hi...
The problem come back...I turn off my pc after 4-5 days and when i turn on USB 3 Renesas doesn't work again......I update with the new beta BIOS than the last time i had this problem and that work !......for a day. I turn off my pc before sleep and this morning this *********** USB 3 DOESN'T WORK.
I do NOTHING....No new drivers, no new strange windows update.
What i do now ? :( :( I'm tired of all this many problems
    Thanks !
Since it worked fine for a while it might be a setting in BIOS messing up USB 3. I recall people with overclocked processors running into USB 3 issues too. Maybe that's what happens here.

I have an MSI Big Bang Marshal with i7 2600K for 18 months. Was running Win7 ultimate x64, Renesas USB 3.0 were recognized by windows but had NEVER worked...  Right now is running Win8 Pro x64, it's recognized by windows, but still not working properly. In both cases when I plug a USB 3.0 device to USB 3.0 port (devices: Patriot Supersonic 32 Gb and WD Passport 1 Tb) it is recognized by windows, but the drives have no letter assigned to then and I can't access any data. If I plug an USB 2.0 device to the USB 3.0 ports, they work fine; if I plug an USB 3.0 device to the USB 2.0 ports, they also work fine. In windows 8, first time after install I plugged an USB 3.0 device to USB 3.0 port it worked "fine" but data transfer was around 29Mb/s (moving from WD Passport do main HD a 1,5Gb file, and then moving back to WD Passport - both ways the same speed). After restart computer, both WD Passport and PAtriot Supersonic were back to the status I first mentioned (recognized, but no driver letter assigned).
I have an Asus P8P67 Deluxe with i5 2400 that have the same Renesas USB 3.0 controler. Right now it's running win 7 ultimate x64 and both Patriot Supersonic and WD Passport don't even are recognized in the USB 3.0 ports.
I have also an Lenovo T420s Laptop with i7 2640 that have the same Renesas USB 3.0 controller. It's running Win7 Pro that comes with it, and both Patriot Supersonic and WD Passport work FLAWLESSLY on this laptop!! File transfers reach about 190Mb/s some times.
This is an unrelated issue. Not to mention that you already made a thread regarding that issue of yours.
Anyway, each of the above boards comes with a specific firmware version for that renesas usb 3 controller. The "problem" here is that renesas' controllers have their own firmware which is not part of the motherboard bios (as an option rom). This is bad because the one who makes a board using that controller can't really patch it with a BIOS update. It's also good however, because the end user can get new firmware versions directly by the maker (renesas) even years after the controller was released instead of waiting for msi to issue an update for each of their boards (which is not going to happen if the board is relatively old).
All you have to do is update the firmware of the controllers and you're all set. There should be some tutorials if you search around the net.

  • 2010 iMac, SL 10.6.7 Apple USB Mouse won't open folders, files or drives- Suggestions??o

...open folders, files or volumes -- Suggestions?
Relaunched the "Finder", no change. Opened "Keychain Access" I also ran "Keychain First Aid"  also "Disk First Aid", Volumes and Permissions, Nothing Worked. There is one suspect in this mess, a USB TouchPad, it doesn't change the code, but patches on to the USB Mouse Code from Apple, same result.
Then, I went to System Preferences/ Accounts and created a new account, with the USB TouchPad in place. I log out and then back into the new account. Using the TouchPad and then the Mouse interchangeably, everything went just fine. I went back into the original account and got the same grief. I checked my "Norton FireWall"and the remaining attempts that were blocked. Once I get everything set up, back to my original account, I was back in the grief.
Does anybody have some suggestions? Thank you, for stopping by.

The correct answer came from Apple Tech Support, I called them. This was one of those problems that smacked you in the mouth and I couldn't figure where it was coming from. The Tech took me to my iMac System Preferences/Mouse and we talked about the settings. For some reason, the double-click option was set for fast, he suggested, I might want to adjust the speed to the halfway point. I did so and the problem is resolved. He took great patience with a grumpy, frustrated Old Veteran. Sir, Think You.
To: babowa, I have always used a firewall, even before they became popular, but before I would either remove or change Norton Anti-Virus or Norton  Firewall.  I'll always try a System Check and even break down and asks an Apple Tech for assistance for dealing with  additional assistance. Thank you, for your help!

  • Zen Vision M not connecting

?I've searched through everything I could find here and tried them all, to no avail. Here's what's happened. My Zen Vision M (30 Gb) wouldn't start when connected to 3 different PCs I use it with. I figured it needed firmware update or something, so I tried that, but all update tools say I need to connect the Zen. I tried clean up and formatting all to no avail. Same not connected issue. Then I searched through the forum and saw the exclamation point in device manager issue, so I uninstalled and then plugged it back in. No more exclamation point and it shows up in device manager, but none of the firmware update options recognize the Zen is connected (or Media Player 0 or ). Device manager says it's operating fine, but Zen Media Explorer, MP3 recovery tool, and Media player do not recognize it as connected. Since it's older, all Creative said was EOSL... Are there things I haven't tried?

Re: Zen Vision M not connecting,Thanks, I had thought I'd tried everything, but as it turns out, one laptop I was using that I thought had Media Player 0 had . I don't think my player was ever exposed to 0, but I rolled back one on a laptop to 0 and then tried the firmware updater I had saved on that laptop and it worked! I'm back in business!? Now am reloading about 25 Gb of music, but that's a pain I can deal with. I tried the different cords and as for OS, one is Vista, one XP Media Center, and one XP. All are up-to-date with service packs etc. I had just updated Norton 360 and I read somewhere that it can mess up USB ports, so that may have started all the fun. In the end, thanks to all in these forums as I never would have thought of rolling back Media Player and the other things I did. Kudos to all....

  • My N8 is turning into a real piece of junk.

I have done nothing to damage my phone but i am experiencing all kinds of problems. the first thing to go not long after i bought it was the loud speaker. sounded great for a while then one day and ever since it has sounded like it was blown.
other problems for you folks to help with are:
1.My phone will no longer hook up to my pc or my mac via usb. it will take the charge but not connect for data transfers or ovi suite maintenance. i'm soo bumned. help. does the N8 have a history of messed up usb hardware. is it replaceable?
2.i loose my tower connections with out knowing. i realize it when i need to make a call and can't connect. by then it could have been unconnected for a day. i have to restart to reconnect.
3.Restart is also messed up. often i have to restart twice. first time fails. by restart i mean turn the phone off and then back on manually. i do not use a restart app.
    4. so the easiest problem that yall might be able to help me with is my phone keeps telling me my C: phone memory is full. but i have  no idea how to move stuff or what to move or delete. all pictures and videos and music, as far as i can tell is on my sd card. so what the heck is on C that is taking up so much space and how should i move it.
any help would be hugely appreciated and keep in mind i am far from a "nerd" on this stuff so keep you language simple and your directions detailed. pretend like your talking to a grandparent.  THANKS

    @vjasonv
Lot of your problems apart from speaker issue may be due to depletion of free phone memory, mostly accounted for by either not deleting browser cache or too many emails stored upon device. If you go to Menu > Office > File mgr. - how much free phone memory remains?
As you are using microSD there is the ability to backup phone within File Mgr. if you can no longer obtain USB connectivity to utilise Nokia Suite for this purpose, although lack of phone memory may cause issues here also.
Happy to have helped forum with a Support Ratio = 42.5

  • Opening an external drive

I have a computer repair business and one of my friends brought me an external drive that has a messed up USB interface. He wants me to open the drive up, remove the HDD and backup his data before sending the drive back to Toshiba for warranty replacement. They said that it would be fine if I did it over the phone, but I was hoping for some more varifiable infromtaion before I possibly void his warranty.

It may be possible to recover some of the data from it but no guarantees.Go to download .com and get a program called PC Inspector and install it on your internal drive.. This can sometimes recover deleted files. They are still there until written over so you may have a chance. Follow the instructions, it's quite easy to use. Good luck.

  • MacBook Pro Apple Cinema Display issues

I’m using Photoshop CS6 through a MacBook Pro connected to an Apple Cinema Display. Files on display don’t always appear (work area is just blank, interface still there) and when I go to save, the save dialog box is off top of screen to where I can’t see but a small portion of the dialog box. Can’t pull it onto screen. Anyone else experiencing this?

I have a similar situation.  I have spring 2011 macbook pro 17" (MacBookPro8,3).  I was connecting to an older 30" Cinema Display HD, using the Apple dual-link cable with Mini DVI (Thunderbolt) and USB.  I am running 10.6.8.
I was running this configuration for a while (closed lid/"clamshell"), but it stopped working.
I'm pretty sure this is from the "Security Update" that I just installed.
No amount of reboots or cable jiggering helped.
Except this wierd thing:  if I connect the USB and display to the laptop, the display stays dark.  If i disconnect the USB cable connecting the DISPLAY to the CONVERTER, the screen comes up fine.
I just plug the keyboard into the laptop and it works.  Of course, unplugging the CONVERTER USB from the LAPTOP makes it go away (?!).  So I've lost a USB prot with this little hack.
Try messing the USB connections and see if you get any changes.
I have no idea what to make of this bizarre behaviour, but it is making me crazy not being able to reliably use my desk setup with this nice laptop.
I hope someone can offer more data or help.

  • HP Photosmart A616 Printer and Time Capsule

I am having a problem printing to my HP Photosmart printer hooked up to the printer server function on my Time capsule. It was working fine from all the computers until I did the Upgrade to the Time Capsule. Now the A616 printer will not print from the server but does work when connected directly to the individual computers. Any suggestions...
    Thanks,

I haven't seen any report that the latest upgrade messed up USB printing but it would not surprise me.
Do a factory reset of the TC.. setup again.. but use all SMB names. ie short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.
Also use the 5.6 airport utility rather than v6 since the later one has no controls for printer.
Google for loading that version into Mountain lion if you run it.
No joy just go back to earlier firmware. IMHO 7.5.2 is far better version for a Gen3 TC anyway..
Do a factory reset again after you downgrade and setup the TC as above.
Then setup the computers again to print to network printer, which might mean having to remove the existing printer setup if you have been using the printer locally.

  • HP 648C problems

I have used an HP 648C printer. Very reliable. Recently, it has started to spit out garble (cyrillic characters, intermittent white space and oversized, stretched lettering). Both the on/off and paper lights blink. I've tried rebooting, unplugging the printer for 10 seconds etc. to no avail. Sometimes I can get one copy out but usually more than than is trouble.
It also picks up a new sheet of paper before a printing order is made--- which has to be manually  removed. Any suggestions?

On my wife's machine, the printer has to be plugged into one of the iMac's usb ports; the keyboard in the other port, and any other perepherals on a powered hub.
A messed up USB cable can cause simular problems.

  • Desktop Manager does not recognize Blackbery Curve

I've looked through prior posts and nothing works to solve this.
I have a Curve 8310 that I've had for awhile with no trouble.  Several times I've reloaded or upgraded DM and never had trouble.  Yesterday I got a new computer, and now I can't get DM to recognize my device.
    Here's more info:
-Checked under device manager and Blackberry is there, so USB cord and port are working.  Whe I plug BB in I can access media on there.
-Uninstalled and reinstalled several different versions of DM, including 4.2, 4.6, 4.7, 4.5, sometimes with media manager, sometimes without.
-I disconneted the BB battery and left it disconnected for several minutes, per a suggestion in another forum.
-I am not connected to a USB hub.
Help!  I've wasted a whole work day on this!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Last time I could connect was 12/23. The desktop manager says device not connected at bottom of window. BUT when you select the connection option, it sees the PIN. The computer sees the BB as well.
Had this problem with DM 4.2. Reinstalled 4.2, still didn't recognize connection. I upgraded DM to 4.6. Still says not connected.
I downloaded new device software (4.5) and tried installing with Application Loader. Funny thing, my BB displays BB to Computer connections picture and knows its being talked to by the Application Loader (or at least the computer), but Application Loader errors saying it can't connect to the BB.
I have messed with USB power management (turned off), turned off antivirus software, changed USB ports.
I am running XP professional as well. I was still on SP1 so upgraded to SP2 thinking maybe this would help (and I needed to anyway). I also have wasted WAY too much time on this.
This happened once several months ago, but then it worked again and I didn't change anything (that I know of). I'm at a loss and nothing anyone has suggested has worked for me yet either. HELP. (I am not on server, this is just my personal BB trying to sync with outlook contact/calendar.) Thought it MIGHT be a bad usb connector on my BB because when I wiggle it slightly, my laptop makes the connect/disconect beebop noise. Maybe I should have the BB checked out? (But then why would it still be recognized as connected by the computer AND be seen by the DM Connections Option window?)
