  • Mac Pro gets stuck on the grey screen and won't finish booting

I have a Mac Pro 1, 1 recently (successfully) upgraded to snow leopard that gets stuck on the grey screen with the spinning rainbow cursor (after the apple logo and brief blue screen) and won't finish booting up. This happened after my computer froze up and I had to force quit.  I checked out the forums and I tried all the all the suggestions (like disconnecting peripherals) and appropriate disk utilities, saw no errors with the HD reported, and had no trouble doing a safe boot  (everything works o.k. there) or starting up from the software disk to perform the repairs.  I did notice that during the repair permissions command, it gets stuck in the last few minutes, the CD starts to chug along, and everything freezes and I have to force quit.  This happens every time I try it.  I eventually backed everything up, erased the HD and reinstalled the OS, reset PRAM and NVRAM, but I'm still getting the grey screen on restart.  Tech tool deluxe reports a "fail" on the video RAM, but everything else seems to check out.  Could it be a graphics card issue?   I did notice some funky visual glitches occurring prior to the breakdown.  Any other ideas?

I wouldn't trust Apple Disk Utility to do a hard drive repair, but I would go with TechTool Pro 5/6 if you have that instead of Disk Warrior from Alsoft.
Clone the drive, though you should have some bootable backup clones already; repair the clone; then boot and work from that drive. Always have a working copy of the system.
And off load all your data to other drives.

  • My powerbook won't finish booting up

I installed some really general updates today- itunes, security, microsoft, and after it shut down I tried to start it up but it won't finish booting up. I get the chime, gray screen, apple logo, and spinning gear but it won't do anything else. I reset the PRAM but I'm afraid to do anything else due to my lack of computer knowledge. I recently upgraded to 10.4.1 and have run several software updates since and this is the first time I've ever had a problem.
    Please help!!
    Thanks so much :0)

Well I ran the OS X installation disk and repaired the disk and it came back "appears to be ok" but it still will not boot up- just gray screen, apple logo, and spinning gear. I also ran the hardware check disk and it came back "ok," too.
Please can anyone help? I'm desperate. I live over 4 hours away from the nearest mac store and I really need my powerbook for school.
Please, please, please any advice is helpful- I'm stumped.
    Thanks :0)

  • 2011 iMac 27" won't finish booting

Yesterday my iMac stopped booting all of the way.  It gets the desktop up, but then stops doing anything.  It has the rainbow wheel For a while but the finder never comes up.   right when the desktop first comes up I can do things but only for 20 seconds or so before it locks.  I have tried booting as guest and in safe mode and have the same problem.   I have run disk utility in recovery mode and it finds no disk errors and almost no permission errors either.   I fixed the ones it had
It will run in single user mode happy as can be.  I thought it was a piece of software but I have deleted every trace of it in single user mode with no luck.   moved all startup items out of the folder other than apple stuff.   Cleaned out caches, cleaned network preference lists.
THere are lots of system stated assertion failed .... Com.apple.xpc.launchd service exited with abnormal code 1 in the system.log file
i went to system restore to try and restore it but it won't connect to the wireless network and just says to move it closer to the router ( even though it shows full bars.). Barring hauling this beat over to another building somewhere where I can find a network cable to plug it into, are there any other ideas what could be causing the problem?

Yeah I tried that but it refuses to connect to my wireless network even tho it has full bars ( and never had an issue before this).
wping was hoping to avoid having to carry it somewhere to try and get a network cable to it

  • Panther won't finish booting - SystemUIServer hanging

I just replaced my hard drive and did a clean install of Panther, which I then updated to 10.3.9. Now, when I start up the computer, it makes it to various points in the bootup process and then all but freezes up. The first time this happened, I was able to check in Activity Monitor and saw that SystemUIServer was occupying my CPU. Now, it doesn't even boot up entirely before it slows to a near halt (it gets to my desktop, the dock shows up, and after that it's anybody's guess).
I've seen other posts where it was suggested that having menu extras can cause this (I have added none of these), and that deleting certain SystemUISever.plist files will help. Unfortunately, I can't even open a finder window to get to my library.
I imagine I could boot directly into Terminal and delete the .plist files from there, but I will admit that I'm completely inexperienced in Terminal. Is this even an option? If so, could someone walk me through the process?
Otherwise, does anyone have any ideas/advice as to what's going on and how to fix it?
    Thanks in advance
    1GhZ PowerBook Ti   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

So I got the problem fixed.
Like I mentioned, the amount of time between booting up and and the system all but freezing up was variable. I got lucky and had a long streak where the SystemUIServer was still sucking up CPU cycles, but I could still do whatever I wanted (albeit a little slower than I would have liked).
The interesting thing is that in Activity Monitor, the CPU usage of SystemUIServer was cyclical - it would go from 0 to 70+% of the CPU and back to 0 over the course of about 15 seconds. It would stay at 0 for about 3 seconds before rocketing back up to 70%.
Anyway, since I had just installed 10.3 and updated to 10.3.9, I took the opportunity to run Software Update again. Available were some Java and security updates, iTunes 7.0.1, Quicktime and a couple others. After installing the updates and restarting, SystemUIServer stopped being a problem. So, problem solved for now.

  • IBook G4 won't finish booting up

I tried to start up my iBook G4 last night (with the power cord, the battery had run out) and when it tried to boot up, it told me that the date & time had been set before March 1, 2001. This is nothing new, I've had it before. When I tried to hit OK, the computer is still "thinking"...with the little swirly multi-colored spiral thing. I left it alone hoping it would correct itself and it never did. I tried rebooting and even removed the battery to start over but to no avail, it started up with the same problem. I also tried to hit alt-apple-escape but it wouldn't work either.
Pleeeeease tell me it's not fried. I can't handle losing everything on that computer.

I don't know of any way to recover from this kind of problem. If you have access to another computer and an external Hard Drive, you could try booting the iBook from an external Hard Drive (the other computer is for installing the OS on the external if it is not already there). After booting from the external, transfer any data that you want to save and reformat.
Other than that, I'm stumped. Good Luck.

  • Server won't finish booting...can't enter safe mode...won't read install

My G4 XServe starts to boot, I see the Apple, then it shifts to the Starting Mac.... screen, and then it just stops on an empty blue screen. I see the server going through and checking each of the four hard drives, system activity lights do their thing, but the blue screen remains.
I cannot get the server to boot from the install CD or DVD (using 10.4.8 and have the 10.4 disks). It will not let me set startup mode by holding down the system identifier button when powering up. I can't get it to accept holding down the C or D keys on the keyboard when starting. When I hold down the shift key it goes to the console and asks me to log in there instead of entering safe mode.
    Any ideas or suggestions?

Are you able to start in Verbose mode?
Hold down "apple" and "v" at startup. This will take you through a logging bootup and into the GUI. Try and see if you can mount it to another machine via firewire disk mode. From there you can check it with Disk Utility or Diskwarrior (provided it mounts).
Or try start in single user mode "apple" and "s" and when you get to the prompt "#" type "fsck -f"
See if any volume repairs are conducted. If they complete or if it works you type "reboot" when done and the server should restart.
    Good luck

  • Iphone 3G won't finish boot up - any suggestions or did I brick??

Okay, so I got a new Iphone 3GS to replace my 3G and did the backup restore with no problem. The only thing left was to reset the 3G to clear all the data. I did the reset and it seemed to be taking too long so I held the power button down to turn the phone off. I then turned the phone on and now I get the apple screen for roughly 20 seconds and then the phone will power itself off. I have tried holding down the home button while connecting the USB connector but no luck. No matter what I do the phone will power down after 20 seconds. Is there any way to get this to reset and restore to factory new settings? I would like to sell it, but now I am afraid I have an expensive paper weight. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Try holding down the power button and the home button at the same time, but when it turns off and starts up again(the apple logo), don't let go of the buttons. It will shut off again. Take your fingers off the button and then press the start button. That's a hard reset. All data should still be intact and this usually clears any issues when normal shut downs fail.
If not, and assuming you got Apple Care with the 3G and the 3GS you should be able to call apple to see if they have a better solution.

  • I installed Snow Leopard on my Macbook. Now it won't finish bootup.

I installed Snow Leopard on my Macbook. It said the install completed perfectly, but now it won't finish booting up.
It just sits on the start-up window with the spinning wheel and the apple logo. I can't even eject the install disk or anything. I waited for 7 hours before giving up and just turning it off. I can't bring up any options or anything... am I done for?

  • I'm having trouble with my computer, I boot it up and within a few minutes it freezes and I have to restart it, I tried updating it to the latest mavericks but it won't finish the installation it's stuck at the end, what can I do to fix this?

As stated I'm having trouble with my computer, I boot it up and within a few minutes it freezes and I have to restart it, I tried updating it to the latest mavericks but it won't finish the installation it's stuck at the end, what can I do to fix this? I need it for homework tonight.

    Crowntheme,
you can try this: boot your MacBook Pro into Recovery mode by holding down a Command key and the R key as it starts up. Once the Mac OS X Utilities menu appears, select Disk Utility. On the left-hand side of the Disk Utility window, select your internal disk’s boot partition (typically called “Macintosh HD”). On the right-hand side, press the Verify Disk button if it’s not greyed out; if it is greyed out, or if it reports that errors were found, press the Repair Disk button. Once the verification/repair is completed, exit Disk Utility and select Restart from the Apple menu to restart in normal mode. Does it still freeze after a few minutes?

  • My dad has a brand new iMac. If he quits an app, this window closes, but the app won't finish shutting down, Force quitting does not work.  Once another app is opened, it will not close either.  Now none of the apps are responding. Any ideas?

My dad has a brand new iMac. If he quits an app, this window closes, but the app won't finish shutting down, Force quitting does not work.  Once another app is opened, it will not close either.  Now none of the apps on the dock are responding. I asked him to click on the apple, and drop down to "About this Mac", but that wouldn't open either. Any ideas?  If I was at his house, I would call Apple Care in a heartbeat, but am home with my sick daughter,,,  Thanks!

For starters, have him open Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, select the volume (the indented listing) and Verify Disk. If it reports any problems, have him try a Safe Boot by holding the Shift key at startup. This boot will take much longer than usual. It's checking and trying to repair the drive directory, if possible. Once in Safe Boot, have him repair Permissions.
For other Disk repair remedies see
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1417
Also, have him try a PRAM Reset. At the startup chime, hold down CMD-Option-P-R together, listen for two more chimes, total three, then let go to finish booting.
Also, is he running any AV? If so, have him uninstall it. It might be responsible for this behavior. (There are no viruses for OS X.)

  • Yosemite Mail won't finish upgrading

It has now been over 12 hours.
    - Removed 3rd party apps
    - force quit Mail
    - restarted mac
Yosemite Mail just won't finish upgrading

Hmmm... What did you do after safe boot? I assume just rebooting did not solve the issue, or did it?

  • Ipod touch 4g won't finish installing a few apps

I have an ipod touch 4th generation, 64gb -- works great except I recently downloaded/installed a few apps (through the app store on the device)... Most of them installed just fine... But I still have a few that won't finish installing... The status bar looks like its at or very near 100%. They just won't finish...
I have tried turning the wifi off and back on.
I've tried logging out of app store and back in (on the device).
I have tried syncing with my computer. I've also looked for updates through itunes (on my computer) and performed a backup successfully.
None of those things have fixed my problem.
I can play games, access the internet, use other apps, heck even move the unfinished installed apps around on the screen. They just won't finish installing nor are they deletable.
I won't reboot my ipod because in the past when I have had this it put the ipod into a endless boot loop (brick mode) and need to restore to get out of it.
    Suggestions? Thanks!
