10.8.2 - xsanctl unmount Y U NO WORK??

I've been using XSAN and StorNext since it was CentraVision.
We're in the process of qualifying 10.8.2 in our studio.
After running the 10.8.2 upgrade and uninstalling/reinstalling the atto 42ES drivers our SAN volume automounts beautifully just as it should, but is there a reason sudo xsanctl unmount <volumeName> no longer works? I found one other thread here on the forums that was archived/locked but unanswered... real helpful . Yes our DNS is working properly.
I tried the trusty umount command which works... but after a few brief moments automount.plist automounts the volume right back.
Yes I'm sudoing xsanctl. tried literally as superuser in the terminal, no dice. I'm  logged into the mac as the admin, full admin privilages.
Cheers, many thanks.

What are you running the MDCs on?  If Apple gear, did you enable Spotlight on the volume?  If so, the mdutil processes hold on to the volume with a death grip, preventing eject of the volume.  You can try to use launchctl to unload the mds processes but this works about 40% of the time.  Otherwise, you need to reboot the machine and then eject the volume within the first ~3 minutes.
If you are on StorNext MDCs, then I am stumped as I have not seen this behavior.

  • [SOLVED] Bash scripts to mount & unmount optical drive in Worker?

I'm running XFCE on Arch with the HAL daemon being called in /etc/rc.conf.
I can access media on my optical drive (DVD's or CD's) through the desktop icon that appears after HAL has recognised the drive, VLC automatically does its thing as does NeroLinux.
The reason I'm posting is that I found a great DOpus clone yesterday called Worker - http://www.boomerangsworld.de/cms/worker/index?lang=en, which I am in the process of configuring.
A problem I have is being able to access the optical drive via Worker.
The way it is on my system, with HAL handling it, the first line (see below) appears after HAL mounts the media, which basically makes the two lines below it useless:
    /media/<title of disk>
    /media/cd
    /media/dvd
I have tried configuring Worker to use /media/dvd (or cd), to access the optical media, these don't work for the reason stated above, & /dev/sd0 doesn't work either.
So, do I have to turn off HAL, uncomment the lines in fstab & use mount?
A little bash script, that would do the job for me would be great, as Worker will accept a script or a command string.
I am a bash baby, so if someone can see a solution please post it?
    All input welcome.
    Thanks.

                    /sbin/mount -o nosuid\,nodev /dev/cd0a /CDROM
Which works in so far as now mounting no longer needs the password.
Which leaves me with the problem of trying to understand how to get Worker to mount the optical drive on command.
If I enter the bash command in the Terminal as follows:
    mount /mnt/dvd
the media is mounted, after which I can push the button in Worker, which I have configured with:
    /mnt/dvd
& the root list of the optical media is displayed in the active panel of Worker.
I just haven't been able to get Worker to use "mount /mnt/dvd" yet, there will be a way, I wonder how long it will take me to find it? lol

  • Spotlight on xsan not working for clients

I have a xsan.  There are four clients running 10.8.5 and two mdc mac mini's running 10.8.5.  The clients are unable to get search results of items on the san volumes.  Any help would be appreciated.

The active MDC does the indexing. It's not the fsm process that runs the volume that does the indexing, but rather Spotlight related processes (mds, mdworking, mdimport, etc) which are accessing files on the volume which the MDC has mounted as an Xsan client. The volume has to be mounted on the active MDC for indexing to work. The mount has to occur after Spotlight has been enabled on the volume.
    As stated in this article:
Xsan 2.x: If an Xsan volume failover occurs before Spotlight becomes active, the Backup Controller may not enable Spotli…
"Use Xsan Admin to unmount and remount the volume on the controller that is currently hosting the volume.  It may still take several minutes for Spotlight to activate."
You could also do this on the MDC (which you would have to do if it's a Yosemite MDC):
    sudo xsanctl unmount VolumeName
    sudo xsanctl mount VolumeName

  • Can't use or fix external hard drive in Disk Utility or Terminal

I have a 1TB Toshiba external USB drive that I was using for Time Machine and other storage. A couple of weeks ago I accidentally unplugged it when it was in the "Preparing Backup" stage of Time Machine.
Since then, when I plug it in, the light on the drive goes on and it spins, but it doesn't show up on the desktop or according to Time Machine. It DOES show up in Disk Utility with the correct partition showing. However, I have tried to erase and partition the drive and I keep getting the message that Disk Utility can not unmount the drive. I tried using Terminal to force unmount the drive and it also failed.
When I run the repair on the physical drive in Disk Utility, it says everything is fine but when I run it on the partition within the drive, I get the message, "Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
No using the drive, no repairing, no unmounting, no partitioning, nothing works.
Any suggestions to simply make it usable. I don't care about the data on it, I just want to be able to clean it and start again OR access the data.
    Thanks!

Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and try to partition the drive. If you can't, it's not working (or perhaps the cable is damaged.)

  • Image new iMac 24" from FW HD doesn't succeed

Found this to be a problem with the MacBooks as well.
If I boot up a brand new MacBook or iMac (intel) from a FireWire hard drive, I cannot erase the internal Macintosh HD.
I can't even use Disk Utility to Repair Disk. Get an error saying the Macintosh HD cannot be unmounted.
So, the work around is to boot from the installer DVD, then erase the Macintosh HD, then reboot from the FW HD, and Restore an image.

Do you have the latest Intel version of your system on the hard drive and are you using the DU from that?

  • Intermittent USB fault on iMac 24"

Is there anything more annoying than an intermittent fault? For the last year or so I have had an issue with the functionality of my USB ports randomly disconnecting at any time. Could be 5 seconds, could be 4 minutes, could be 8 mins 34 seconds.... you get the point. The following things are affected:
External HD (new WD Passport with USB 3.0) (Randomly unmounts off desktop. Works fine on my Macbook Pro)
Internal iSight camera (In Skype & photobooth I randomly get the message 'camera unavailable or in use by another application' and it switches off)
USB keyboard (This happens very rarely and needs an unplug / replugin to work again)
    Curiouser and curiouser....
I have 2 WD passport older model external HDD which never do this and remain mounted always. Even when plugged in at the same time as the USB 3 HDD
iPhone / iPad / Card reader all work 100% fine and never eject unceremoniously.
    I have tried:
    Repair / verify disk permissions
Operating under a new user account
    Checking system profiler
And all the dumb stuff that Apple 'helpfully' suggests like 'check you cables are plugged in' etc etc.
    I am running Leopard 10.5.8
Anyone PLEASE have any idea why its doing this? I have taken it to 2 genius bars and brilliantly the computer behaves perfectly so no fault can be detected.
If I upgrade to Snow Leopard and then subsequently Lion could this fix it? Is it worth backing up everything on my older externall HDD and doing a clean restore to SL / Lion? Can the USB hardware be replaced without messing with the Logic Board? Could it be that some of the hardware is pulling too much power and its having a kernel panic?
    Heeeeellllppppp!!!!

The intermittent power problem you describe is probably linked to the logic board since that controls the main power for the computer. Software upgrades are unlikely to address the root of the issue because it is highly likely that it is a hardware issue. Did the Genius Bar visits include a Network Diagnostic? This is usually more thorough than the Apple Hardware Test available from the install disks and can reveal faulty circuits. Have the Genius Bar techs take a more involved approach to their investigation.  See what results before you look at follow-up steps.
The intermittent disconnects are not kernel panics; you will know when you get one since that puts your entire system out of commission.

  • Itunes 7.4.3 not working on one PC with new Nano, 7.4.1.2 working on Lappy

I have a new 3g Nano, replaced my 1G Nano.
My new IPOD will not work with Itunes 7.4.3, the USB drivers seem all screwy. It will mount, unmount, etc. It works great on my laptop running 7.4.1.2. I am NOT going to update the laptop. I do not want to reinstall ITUNES on my desktop, because reinstalling everything is a pain I don't want to deal with, but that's the PC with all my movies and music.
Is anyone else having an issue like this? The IPOD won't stay mounted, and Windows gives a USB error message.

I don't see any reason offhand why this form would not work... do other forms work on the system that you're having problems with? I'm wondering if there's a problem with the Acrobat installation on that PC that's causing the scripts to not run.

  • Hard Drive Dasiy Chain drops drives

    G'day y'all,
I'm editing tutorial videos using FCP 5.1 on a MacBook Pro. My source material is stored on 5 external hard drives. I have 4-500 GB Maxtor III and 1-1TB Maxtor III drives.
When I have the 4-500 GB drives in the daisy chain (using firewire 800) it works great. The problem is when I add the 1 TB to the chain. With the 1 TB drive in the chain 1 or 2 of the 500 GB drives gets randomly removed/unmounted while I am working in FCP.
I noticed that the 500 GB drives are formatted as OS X extended and the 1 TB drive is formatted OS X extended (journaled.)
I talked to Seagate tech support and they thought that the difference in the formatting was the reason the drives were being dropped. I talked to a friend at Apple and she didn't think that the difference in formatting would cause the problem but maybe a power supply or firewire issue, but she works with software so...
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Terese

I'm with your friend. It seems highly unlikely to me that the journaling would make the difference. If you're working on your macbook pro, I would suggest that you get a firewire 800 card so that you can divide the drives over 2 buses. You might try using shorter firewire cables, although in the past I've had up to 11 drives chained without any serious problems. Using higher quality firewire cables also might make a difference.
Are all the firewire interfaces the same? I had serious firewire problems that I think could only be attributed to the fact that I was mixing lacie and g-raid drives. Someone on the list (I think Jerry Hoffman) suggested that there might be some sort of compatability problem between the different firewire interfaces on the drives. I had an extremely problematic lacie drive that performed flawlessly when the g-raids were not connected.
Personally, I've moved to Sata drives with a 5 bay external sata enclosure. This is only a possible solution on your macbookpro, not your imac, though.

  • How to clone bootcamp partition on Mac?

    Hello!
I currently have a 200GB bootcamp partition on my 2TB internal iMac hard drive. I want more space for my windows partition. I have a spare 500GB Hard drive laying around, and was wondering if there was a way that I could clone the bootcamp partition from my iMac onto that drive. I'd still want it to be bootable. That way I could have an extra 300GB of space without sacrificing my internal HD. Is there an easy way to do this? Thanks!
    Thomas

Mac OS Yosemite and Win8.1 on external Thunderbolt/USB 3 drive.
    How to:
Remember before you start: Make sure you have updated backups on everything involved, unmount all not necessary drives. during the different stages unmount the drive not working on i.e. if you are doing things on the  external unmount the internal. Take your time and be sure to choose the right drive and partition so you don’t mess everything up.
    1. Update all Mac OS updates from Mac App Store.
    2. Run Boot Camp on internal (original) drive, including make a USB stick drivers for Win (Can take forever on a slow USB stick, but will get there) Install Windows from DVD or similar (I did from a bought DVD, no OEM allowed)
    3. Test-run and configure and add all updates for Windows and installing an Antivirus app is also good to do.
    4. Install a new fresh Mac OS on an external USB or Thunderbolt drive (or use CarbonCopyCloner to get a copy of internal Mac OS)
    5. Check the new external Mac OS by rebooting to it. if Ok, reboot to internal again.
    6. Run WinClone 4 and make an image file from the Boot Camp to an image file to your desktop.
    7. Run Disk Utility and select your external drive, Choose the Partition tab, click the + below the main (only partition), select the space between the now two partitions and drag upp or down until lower parts size is at least a tad bigger than the original Boot Camp volume or bigger. Select the new partition and rename it and choose to format it to MS-DOS FAT. Execute.
    8. Run WinClone again and choose your new image-file, and target your new FAT-partition on the external drive.
    9. Reboot the Mac, and when screen goes black, press and hold the alt-button until the startup drives is shown, select the new Windows disk on your external drive. If all ok your computer will start on Windows on your external drive. When running Windows goto your USB-stick open the Boot Camp folder and run the setup.exe.
When all seems to work ok reboot again and this time to your internal Mac OS.
    10. When in your internal Mac OS, run the Boot Camp app again and make sure only the Remove Win8xx is checked, run and the Boot Camp will be removed on your Mac drive.
    Check-run everything agan.
Thats how I did it, might be easier way but at least I’m a happy camper now :-)
So now I have the options to run Mac OS on my internal drive, run Mac OS on my external together with Parallels Desktop and Windows 8.1 in a virtual or just run Windows only on the external drive (best for gaming etc in windows)

  • Loss of Raid metadb after reboot

    Hi,
I'm building a new Solaris 10 server and am attempting to create a simple Raid1 array with little success. I've read and re-read everything available and believe that I am doing everything correct, however, I completely lose my metadevice state database and hence my raid configuration when I reboot the system.
I create a number of meta databases on a spare slice and a simple raid 1 array for a drive that I can unmount. The mirror works fine and everything works perfectly well and reorts that it is in a good state. When I reboot my system, the mount fails and on checking, there is no metadbs and no pseudo md devices on the system.
Anybody know any reasons why my metastat databases are not persistant?

    Hi,
    Thanks for the reply.
I should have replied to my own thread really when I worked out what was happening. The code excerpt was slightly misleading in that I had already created another set of replicas on another disk. They were all created and the array was in a healthy state before the reboot. The problem was actually due to a known Solaris bug where the replicas are lost on a reboot if there are 8 or more state replicas defined.
I simply reduced the number of replicas to 4 and everything works fine.
    Thanks,
    Pete

  • "No partition table found" Can't access to my DATA partition

Hello friends! It's happened a catastrophe! Yesterday I was resizing partitions on my hard drive, divided in this way:
    1: ext4 containing CHAKRA
    2: swap
    3: extended
         3rd: DATA
And here there were all the other partiotions containing ARCH (/ / var / home)
I decided to delete all partitions of Arch, and to extend the DATA partition with the space available obtained by the elimination of arch ... I have done these steps on chakra, the extended partition was unmounted and free to work, I left my computer on all night without even using it so as not to interfere, but 10 minutes ago I go to check and I discover that my computer is off (do not know why because the battery was attached, maybe electricity went down for a considerable period of time and in any case my battery lasts a very little so it has not resisted until the return of electricity).
I turn my computer on, I sign in it with Chakra and I find out that the extended partition is gone! Partitionmanager tells me "No partition table found" and all my data are disappeared!
Is there a way to remedy this apocalypse? I truly don't know what to do, apart committing suicide!

  • How do I fix aLaCie Backup Drive that runs constantly after Maverick upgrade

LaCie backup drive for time machine runs constaantly after Maverick upgrade.  This is using resources and slows the processor

After installing Mavericks on my one year old iMac (loaded) Time Machine failed (Pegasus Promise Thunderbolt 3TB).  I tried unmounting it, didn't work.  Rebooted: Time Machine failed again [Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to “Time Machine”. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.] was the only message. Had to reboot to get Pegusus accessible again.  Tried re-intalling Maverick (old Microsoft thing... reintall the OS).  Didin't do anything for Time Machine, same failure.  Booted into safe mode: nothing, same probelm.  Repaired permissions: no joy there either.  So, now have no Time Machine backups at all. And Time Machine won't work with the Pegasus. [same error message after 30 min or so every time].  ordinary file saves work fine though.
    Ideas please?

  • Automounting MTP devices

    Hi all,
I tried a lot of techniques to mount MTP devices (such as the latest Android devices without a SD card) automatically when plugged-in. gvfs-gphoto2 kinda worked, but for me it was dreadfully slow, and the only reliable solution, at this time, was to use go-mtpfs. But then it's not automatic, you have to type horribly complicated commands in a terminal! Yuck.
In the PKGBUILD below, a few UDEV rules to fix that. They currently only work with the devices I got (Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus, both on CyanogenMod 10), so they definitely won't work on anything else, which is why I didn't submit them right now to the AUR. I just wanted to share them in case anybody was interested. And since it's my first PKGBUILD (hurray!), do share any tips you might have regarding, oh, I don't know, something I might have forgotten, a rule I didn't know about, or something that could be done better.
    Cheers!

I've made a few modifications based on http://hackaday.com/2009/09/18/how-to-write-udev-rules/ in your /usr/bin/mtp file to have mount and unmount notifications under Gnome Shell.

Another problem, if the device is locked (I'm using the schema lock) it will not mount (it try to mount, fail, then unmount), Is there a way to send a notification to the user telling him to disconnect, unlock and retry? I'm anable to find a way to do this.

  • Dism - The directory could not be completely unmounted - process explorer can't find open processes and unmounting fails

    Hi all,
Installed WAIK on server 2008 R2 64 bit. I'm setting up some boot images, and am having a real hard time getting drivers to integrate into the driver store in the boot images.
What I'm finding is that when adding drivers to the boot image the gui hangs part way through over 50% of the time using Dell 760 or HP NX9420 drivers extracted to pull out the inf files. It's really flakey and will work after a couple of attempts and when the wind is right.
The main problem is that when the process fails the image is left open, so using dism to list mounted images and then umount the open images is the only way to try again.
However, some images won't unmount and the unmount process displays the following:

Rebooting the server clears the lock, but it's really becoming a joke, as I can create a boot image with the drivers, but then going back into add another driver causes the gui to not respond.
Any suggestions gratefully accepted. - Matt.

    Hi all,
had same problem unmounting the wim file using Windows 7 Pro 32bit.
My solution was: Checking for "wrong" Dism.exe
Preparing a WinPE I followed the steps in the help of AIK. I ran the
copype.cmd batch. When it was finished, it said that it added something
to the path environment variable. It was clear that it did so in order
to find the tools needed for the further steps. As long as everything
worked, I didn't give it a second thought. Then I could not unmount the
    WIM.
I looked at the PATH variable: NO entry pointed to the directory where
dism.exe was in. (In my case that would have been
         c:\program files\windows aik\tools\x86\servicing
Magically, dism.exe started from everywhere though.
    Doing a      dir c:\dism.exe /s /a     showed I had a Dism.exe in
c:\windows\system32, as well. This one has a file size different from
the correct one. Obviously I had started this one (because PATH points
    there).
Starting the correct dism.exe let me unmount the WIM without problems.

    Robert

  • DVD Drive unmounts and crashes any app that tries to access it...help!

    Hi,
I have a MacPro with a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR106d. All has been working well until recently.
Yesterday, I started a project to encode my DVDs for Apple TV using Handbrake.
When I insert a DVD, it spins up, mounts it, and allows normal operation.
However, once the drive spins down (e.g. after a rip), the drive unmounts and won't eject the DVD. I've tried ejecting it using the Terminal, but Terminal freezes. I've tried Disk Utility, but it won't get past the 'gathering information' stage. I've tried any other app that accesses the drive, and they all crash. Eventually, Finder itself crashes and won't restart (or allow me to shutdown).
The only thing to do is a hard-reset (ouch) which makes it work as normal.
    Any ideas?
I've done a Permissions repair but no joy.
    Mat

Really strange. If I 'catch' the drive before it's powered down and eject the disk once Handbrake has finished, it's fine - and will do another. If I leave it for a minute, the drive just switches off completely. So so strange. I wonder if Handbrake is to blame?
I've tried it on another user account as suggested, and it does the same thing. I'm going to try not using Handbrake and just play it, stop it, try to eject it and see what happens. Thanks for your help.
    Mat
