10.8.3 rendered my MBP to lag and freeze (and other issues)

Okay. I have a Macbook Pro 9,1 (non-retina, Mid-2012).  After installing 10.8.3 through App Store, my computer begins to lag, and it would completely freeze in about 2 hours or so.  It starts with one application 'not responding' and it would spread to other applications.  When I try to Force Quit, that Force Quit window would freeze as well.  None of my keyboard, track pad etc would work. I had to force shut down by holding the Power button.
I have done the following:
Restart
Restart with 'Reopen Windows when logging back in' off
SMC Reset
PRAM Reset
Hardware Test
Disk Permission Repair
Repair Disk
Reinstall OS
Reinstall using COMBO Update
fsck -fy in Single User Mode
I also checked the ~Library/Logs/Diagnostic Log and Uninstalled (with official uninstaller) EyeConnect (who crashed in the background for about 8 times during my 24hrs use of 10.8.3.)
While going through that list, I found issues in kernel_task taking up a lot of RAM (1+ GB in normal mode) (~400 GB in safe mode). The free RAM would also be miniscule just before the multiple freezes I had.
Booting through Safe mode, after about 2 minutes or so after boot, My RAM looks like this:
(No Free Space, Wired taking up 6GB...) The Animation would be very choppy  and I would be using Nvidia Graphics Card (GT-650M) instead of Intel Graphics 4000, when nothing graphic intensive is up.  Some Post floating in the Support Communities also mentioned how the VRAM for Intel Graphics 4000 shrunk from 512MB to 384MB. I think I have the same problem as well.
I've been to Apple Store/Genius Bar Twice: They basically said I should wipe the computer and hope for the best.  They also checked my Hardware, and it seems alright.
I thought of rolling back to 10.8.2 through Time Machine, but for some reasons, my HDD (through Thunderbolt) would not mount when booted from the recovery partition. It's there in Disk Utility, just won't mount. When accessing the HDD through USB 3.0, my most recent back-ups are not present, with the most recent update from March 2nd.  (March 3rd ~ March 18th Missing.)This shouldn't be the case, as I back up multiple times every day. I am also able to view the recent dates through Time Machine ('Enter Time Machine' from the menu bar).
I think the only thing left I could do would be Rolling back to March 2nd or Wiping my computer to factory settings.  Both I'm quite reluctant to do so, for obvious reasons.
Hypothesis on the issue: I think it's the RAM management gone wrong, causing the computer to lag+freeze so much.  I predict the wipe won't help much.  But we won't know what will happen unless we do it, I guess...
Did I mention about the sleep problems I had before 10.8.3? I'll skip those since it's not fatal, but they're not resolved in 10.8.3 as well. I installed 10.8.3 hoping to solve those problems, only to get even more problems Help Please? Thanks!

  • MBP a1226 has been acting odd on startup. (and other issues)

Today, every time I've powered the machine on, the fans run at max speed and iStat reports my avg temp at nearly 82C, which is sorta hot and unusual for my almost three year old MBP.
This is the latest in a series of problems I've been experiencing lately that may or not be relevant. First, I'm having that trackpad and keyboard issue detailed in that big topic. As of now, pressing down on that ribbon fixes it. Second, I started up my computer one time to find that OS X was reporting a battery issue. The message was something like "Service battery." I just purchased the battery brand new, from an Apple Store, last September or so. After a reboot, the message went away and hasn't come back since.
So as far as questions, is the initial issue something to worry about? Also, should I consider talking to Apple about my battery?

You might want to open Activity Monitor and see if there is some hung up process running in the background which is hogging the CPU and causing the heat and fan noise. Be sure to select "All Processes" at the top.
It wouldn't hurt to have Apple evaluate your battery--I believe that here is a stress test they can run for you to be sure the battery is functioning properly.
    Good luck!

  • MBP will not wake up and other issues

I have the mid 2012 15" non-retina MBP. I recently did the software update released on Nov. 8 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1609). Granted, I don't know if my issue and the update are correlated but it might be.
After the update, whenever I try to wake up my computer (open the screen), the screen doesn't turn on. I hit the space button and the screen turns on for a half a second but its just black with either the beach ball or the cursor (i cant remember). The light on the body stays on steady the whole time. They only way to access my mac is to do an ungraceful shutdown (hold down the power button) and restart.
Also, in another not as important matter, when it does start up and i login again, all my apps (messages, facetime, twitter, etc...) ask me for my password even though they are in keychain. they have never done that before. It sometimes ask me for authorization for those apps to access the keychain.
So I don't know if these are connected, separate, stemmed from the update, or what but any insight would be very much appreciated. Thanks!

So i called apple care, dropped $20, and got them to to help me. It seems to have stoped for now. If anyone has the same issue, here is what Apple care told me.
Verify your Macintosh HD in recovery mode
    1. shutdown and restart into recovery mode (press power button and imdiatly press and hold the option key)
    2. start into the recovery partition
    3. once your OS X untilities start up, select disk utilites
    4. Select Macintosh HD
    5. click verify disk.
    6. if it comes up with a problem, your on your own. if not, move on.
Start up in saftey mode and remove all programs that start up on login.
    1. shutdown
    2. press power button and then imdiatly press and hold the shift key until you see the progress bar.
    3. login
    4. goto System Preferences => Users and Groups
5, unlock the lock at the bottom
    6. select your user
    7. on the right side select Login Items.
    8. select all NON-APPLE apps and press the - button to remove them.
    Reset the RAM
    1. shut down
    2. press power button and immdiatly press ⌘ ⌥ P R (command+option+P+R) and hold untill you here the startup sound at least twice. as long as its twice, it doesnt matter if you do it more.
    3. release and finish start up.
    4. check app store and preform all updates.
thats all they told me. hope this helps.

  • Podcast App 2.1.2 on Touch 5G - Lag and battery issues

Since updating to the newest version of Apple's own Podcast app, my iPod touch 5g suffers from extreme lag inside the Podcast app only (around almost 1 second for every touch event to be executed) and the battery life has decreased dramatically. Also, listening to 4 hours of audio Podcasts used up around 80% of the battery. My iPod touch is running iOS 7.1.1 and has plenty of storage space left. I have just around a dozen audio Podcast subscriptions and no video subscriptions at all.
    Anyone with a similar experience?

Could you be streaming the podcasts vice playing them after downloading the file to the iPod?

  • Has the new Early 2013 Retina Macbook Pro still lag and display issues?

Hello. I've never had a Mac before and I'm thinking of buying the new "early 2013" 15-inch (2.7 Ghz, 16Gb Ram, $2799) Retina Macbook Pro. I live in Argentina but I'm going to NYC in a couple of weeks and I want to get one there. The thing is, that I can not be returning it 2 or 3 times like I read a lot of peple had to, because I'll be coming back home after 2 weeks and here they will only fix it, not replace it for a new one, and that could take months.
So, I want to know if you guys can help me decide if I should go for it or not, if these image retention and burn in and ui lag issues appear to be fixed with this new model or if it is still the same. If I don't buy this one I'll be getting the new Samsung Series 7 Chronos they showed in CES 2013, still not available in the market. Thanks a lot!

I just checked and I have the LG SJA2, too. I didn't notice any Image retention at first, I tested it with the chessboard test for 5 or 6 minutes, it showed no IR. But with 10 minutes I can see a bit of IR. Nothing that can affect the normal use of the computer, I mean I have to put the chessboard for 10 minutes and then change to grey to notice it, but it does exist and is the SJA2 from LG. If it doesn't get worst, I think it doesn't even matter. I just hope it doesn't get worst.
FWIW, I noticed that until I stopped looking at the chessboard before it switched; my eyes had image retention. But  in that awfully long thread on the subject, some have insisted that if it's an LG, it's trouble so I guess there's no guarantee. (BTW, I was writing this when you tried the test again - ocular image retention?)
Not to hijack the thread, but shortly after I posted that "good news" about SJA2, my rMBP simply refused to start at all; it was totally inert. Charging, not charging, SMC reset, nothing helped. Tech support's only solution was bring it in to be fixed.
On a hunch, and remembering something about magnets in the top of the display activating a reed switch in the base, probably near the trackpad, I lifted the front of the Mac about 1/4" inch and let it drop. Bingo! The Mac has operated properly so far. I suspect the reed switch was stuck in the wrong position, and some evidence suggests it was that way out of the box and my fix corrected it.

  • Any MB or MBP BootCampers experiencing keyboard freezes in other OSes?

Wondering if there are readers who are experiencing their keyboards going dead for intermittent periods when in OSes other than MacOS? Obviously, when booted via BootCamp?
Trying to get anecdotal info on the keyboard freezing phenomenon - if it's happening under BootCamp in non-Apple OSes, then it would seem to indicate a hardware or firmware issue, since the MacOS would be effectively out of the loop.
    Curious...

yes my wireless keyboard keeps unpairing and I cannot pair without a keyboard.

  • Update will not connect to server, continuous lagging and questionable security?

I actually have a few questions. I recently switched to Firefox from IE9 for a few reasons. My IT Security professor mentioned Firefox was safer than most and an online article suggested it was faster than IE9. So I decided to give it a chance; the previous version was too slow and wouldn't play any video so I downloaded version 4. It worked great for about 3-4 weeks and now I'm having the following problems:
    1. Every time Firefox says it has to update, the window pops up to connect to server. All it does is continuously try to connect (nothing happens). Now, one time I left it open all day to see if it would and that night a window popped up and said to restart Firefox to complete. I did what it said and it just started trying to connect to the server again.
    2. When I first downloaded Firefox 4 it was fast and almost never lagged. Now, it seems as if every page I try to connect to lags. In fact, sometimes I have to close it down and restart. It's actually normal pages I open everyday like school, mail, weather and typical Yahoo pages. Nothing has changed on my end, so I'm unaware of why this is happening now.
    3. I'm really concerned with the security issues. I still have IE9; recently, because of lagging and security issues, I've tried switching between the two to check cleaning details. I'll run my cleaner after a day of IE9 and do the same for Firefox (same typical searches). With IE9, there's not much to clean, maybe 17-18 mb's at most (cookies, typical stuff) and never had a virus. The CPU monitor also stays calm. On Firefox, I get 160-210 mb's every time. The CPU gauge fluctuates constantly and I've had three viruses.
I'm not sure if it's because the updates will not take or what, but I've had to switch back to IE9 because of these problems. I really enjoyed Firefox (when it worked); the interface was easy to navigate and use and in the beginning was very fast. I miss it! But because of these issues, I have to take a break until they are fixed. I can't afford to have my computer crash. Please help!

If there are problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version.
    * Do not remove personal data when you uninstall the current version.
Remove the Firefox program folder before installing that newly downloaded copy of the Firefox installer.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • 2010 MBP 13.3 Lags and Fan on High Logic Board?

    Hello Everyone,
I recently was given a 2010 Macbook Pro 2.4 13.3.  When I got it the computer lagged really bad, and the fan is stuck on high.  With that and the backlight for the keyboard not lit, I suspected the logic board but when I went to disk utility I could not see the hard drive and it would not show any partitions.  I replaced the hard drive and booted the computer in internet recovery and the same thing happens, when it is on during internet recovery, when you are selecting the wireless router the mouse works great and it is super fast, but as soon as it begins to load and start the internet recovery it starts lagging really bad.
One weird thing I noticed that its doing was during one of the installation process the fans slowed down to normal for about 30 seconds. During this time the mouse did not lag and the thing was moving quite quickly.  But every time I attempt to reinstall OSX it says it was not able to install the program because of a missing file, and quits.
So no I can't reinstall anything. the keyboard light is out and the fans on high.  I tried SMC reset and NVRAM and neither made a difference.  So I took the logic board out, cleaned it super good, shows no signs of liquid damage or corrosion.  Reinstalled and still the same issues.
I guess the long story question here is do you think its a logic board going bad?  I am going to try and reboot with an individual stick of ram to see if that makes a difference but I feel the combination of the lights out and the fan on high tends to make me think that the board is not happy.
Any thoughts,  and if you think its a board, any suggestions where to repair or replace for the best price.  For a free MBP I am not afraid to spend a few bucks to add this to my arsenal of macs.
    Thanks
    Keith

2010 shipped with 2 DVD.  The AHT is one one of those DVD.  Boot off the DVD by holding the c key.
    from the link above-
Using Apple Hardware Test on computers with OS X 10.5.5 to 10.6.7
AHT is located on the Applications Install Disc 2 and should be included with your computer or the MacBook Air Software Reinstall Drive on a MacBook Air (Late 2010). To start AHT on these computers make sure the Applications Install Disc 2 is inserted into the built-in optical drive, external Apple Superdrive, or for the MacBook Air (Late 2010) be sure the MacBook Air Software Reinstall Drive is inserted into a USB port. Please then follow steps 1-6 outlined in the "Using Apple Hardware Test on computers with OS X 10.7 or later" section of this article.

  • Experiencing 'lag' & other issues with FCP 7.0.3 on MacBook Pro...please help!

    Hi all
Man, I've been having SUCH frustrations with my MBP running FCP lately - and it used to be 100% no more than 6 months ago?
Basically what happens is that the Canvas window starts lagging after a while - it sometimes looks as if the external HDD can't keep up with FCP anymore, regardless of whether I use my Mac HD as scratch drive, or my external. And I've tried it across numerous externals... I'm beginning to wonder if it's my logic board or GPU, or perhaps even my FW800 port?
Also, when I'm editing on my timeline and add new clips to the edit, this behaviour picks up. Sometimes, when I'm scrubbing or skipping through clips on the timeline, the Canvas displays funky green frames, starts laggin, or the worst: the frames between one cut and another jump around like crazy, even if I just play back at normal speed.
I've done everything I could - cleared space on my Mac HD (it's now got more than 50% free), repaired and verified disk permissions, run AppleJack, etc. etc.
Does anyone know what it could be? I'm seriously considering a fresh install of Mac OS X 10.6 and FCS2, as well as upgrading from 4Gb to 8Gb RAM, but what bothers me most is how this used to never happen, and it's not like the work I'm doing is more intense or heavier than anything I've done before.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks... But again, why would I have to do this now when it was never a problem before?
In any case, all the footage I'm using in this project is XDCAM EX, the only difference being that some footage is 720, while other footage is 1080, and then there's also a variation in terms of interlaced and progressive footage accross the board (it's a rock band documentary, don't ask! )... Could this have something to do with it?
I kinda doubt it, cos one of the TV shows I work on has the same codec, resolution and other settings accorss the board, and I experience the same stutter on these projects...

  • Graphics, caching and performance - how to address a lag and stutter?

I'm in the middle of developing an interactive story that I'm intending to cross deploy to a number of tablets - starting with the iPad. Instead of a classic page-turn style story, this is told on a long paper scroll, with the user panning left and right (and some times up and down) along the story.
All graphics are rendered as flat 3D panes using native 3D in Flash and move in a parallax fashion, kind of giving the effect of watching theatre flats change as you read. As such, I understand that they're already being rendered as bitmaps and the app is taking advantage of GPU rendering on the iPad. None of the graphics have their visibility set to false, and all of them are added to the stage (even if they're a good few pixels off to the right at the beginning) on the first frame. They're also all on the root stage and have no nested display objects.
The issue I'm finding is a noticeable lag and jump when new objects are about to come in from off screen for the first time. After they've been seen, the application runs quite smoothly. Obviously poor performance on first opening is a real problem though. I feel that this is probably a caching issue, but can't work out how to go about addressing it. Any ideas?
    A few further notes:
All graphics in the story share a class that includes cacheAsBitmap and cacheAsBitmapMatrix to ensure that the GPU acceleration can be taken advantage of
Am compiling to AIR 2.5 and using the packager directly from Flash CS5. Have tried 2.6 and it's actually noticeably slower
Once an image has been rendered on the screen it tends not to cause a lag the next time it's displayed. I tried having them all on the front at the beginning and then clearing them to try to force them into the cache - didn't seem to make a difference
All graphics are separate PNG files at the moment. I haven't tried pushing them all into a sprite sheet or three yet, think that might help?
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can suggest.
    Tom

    Hi Tom,
This is likely because the GPU has limited memory, and the biggest bottleneck with a GPU is copying data to it.
From the sounds of it the delay occurs when this happens (i.e. images just about to come on to the screen are loaded in to the GPU).
You could solve it (just thinking aloud here) by placing an instance of each image that is about to come on to the stage on the stage but under another image (e.g. under the backgroudn image) to force it to preload into the GPU.  Instead of placing them hidden on the stage, creating an instance in actionscript and storing it in a vector may also work?  Though perhaps these are not cached until they are added to the display list.
However, it may be likely that the number of images you have may exceed the capacity of the GPU anyway and this might not help.  I have also seen mentioned that the new Flash Player (iOS) is smart enough to recognise when images are fully hidden (i.e. behind a background image) and not cache or display them.
So if you had the following pages (mostly vertical but some horizontal):
    ABC
    D
    EF
    G
    H
You would perhaps do something like:
    ABC (cache: D)
    D (cache: ABC EF)
    EF (cache: D G)
    G (cache EF H)
    H (cache: G)
Sorry I don't have any definitive answers, just something to try.
    hope it helps!

  • Airplay Mirroring Lags and Sputters

With Mirroring I have Extreme Lag and Sputtering. Video is unwatcahable as well as any work with it. My set up includes:
Apple TV 2 with high-grade cables (works fine streaming anything native on ATV2 as well as my iPhone 4s)
    MBP 15" i7 2.2 GHz with 8 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD
Time Capsule 2TB with 5 GHz Network enabled
Tried using both built in Mountain Lion Airplay Mirroring as well as AirParrot, both lag pretty bad with AirParrot being better.
There wasn't anything else running on the network and I only was running one-two apps at a time.

I think we're a way off from a perfect wireless second monitor. A year ago I tried a few on the iPad and had the same lagginess and haven't been inclined to try anything since. I just don't think Wi-Fi is the way to go. Maybe in about 2 or 5 years from now we will have a suitable wireless solution for a monitor. It's hard to predict at this point.
The best way to view your content is to create a dedicated server. LaCie makes a Media box like Apple TV with less bells and whistles, but it will play a lot more file types if you don't want to convert your videos. The only drawback to it is that you would have to purchase and install Twonky Server to get it to work (it's about $20-$30) as well, and to be honest, it just doesn't work as well on my Mac Server as it did on my Windows Server.
Of course, the other option is the one I stated above.
I was lucky in that I've always converted my videos to mp4 because I always believed that it was the most universal. I use a dedicated file server with iTunes running and my Apple TV works great with it.

  • MBP performance with and without battery attached while plugged in

Hello all, I read somewhere that, even when plugged in, your MBP draws power from the batteries for performance. And I notice this when I try to use my MBP with the battery removed, which leads to lag and stutter.
So, my question is, does this happen while running windows on your MBP too?

Well, I do have an aluminum cooler with 2x60mm fans blowing quite a lot of air into the underside of the MBP. The cooler reduces the temp of the MBP about 5 degrees celcius with the battery, but without the battery, the cooler reduces the temp by about 10. Under load, the temperature differences become greater. I don't know if the greater temp difference without battery this is due to underclocking of the CPU, or just removal of the battery leading to less insulating material. And of the times I've runned Windows without a battery, there has been no shutdowns or BSODs, and I haven't noticed any change in performance.
Guess I should take the confound (cooler) out of the equation and see if performance changes with/without battery.
BTW, CPU-Z shows no change in clock speeds with or without battery in Windows.
Oh, and is there any way to see if my 8600GT is defective or not?
