10.8.4 (server) and windows file sharing problem

Hello
This is a clean install of 10.8.4 and server apps not and upgrade of 10.5.8
(This server had a working 10.5.8 server install.... sigh!)
AFP, SMB and guest access enabled on all shares
Guest sharing enabled in the User accounts in System prefences.
from any Mac station AFP:// and SMB://   works fine using Guest access or typing in any name.
No Windows station ( Win 7, XP, SRV 2008 ) can connect to the shares successfully.
Tried from stations that are part a local domain and others who are just in a WGRP
When attempting to connect to the Mac server shares the log in window appears and
no matter what is typed in ( Even the Mac server admin account) or guest
the connection fails
Error:  is not accessible, you might not have permission to use this network resource
the remote procedure call failed

I'm actually having the same issues as Shawn. No non-Mac computers can connect to the new Mac Pro server (10.8.4) using SMB. Mac users can use SMB or AFP without issue.
Here's a screenshot of the message Windows users are seeing:
Can someone point me in the right direction on how to get this fixed? This is urgent!

  • Issues with Mac OS X Server 10.4.8 and Windows File sharing

We are having lots of issues with our SMB share on Mac OS X Server 10.4.8. The main issues are the following:
    - Group ACLs seem to not work properly, and I have had to add dozens of manual permissions on a per-user basis
    - Often, users open a file in read-only mode, without any reason, and can't modify it
    - Often, users open a file with full write access, but then cannot save it and have to use a "save as function".
After having looked all over the Internet and on the Apple's discussions forum, it seems like this issue has been around for quite some time now:
    http://discussions.apple.com/search.jspa?forumID=702&threadID=&q=smbANDpermissions&objID=f702&dateRange=thisyear&userID=&numResults=15&rankBy=10001
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1546867&#1546867
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=647251
And no real answer/solution has been provided by Apple yet.
I also looked on Samba related pages, and it seems like these issues were Samba related (both ACL/OpenLDAP and Microsoft Office file handling issues), and the current version of Samba (3.0.23c) seem to have solved lots of issues in these areas:
    http://us1.samba.org/samba/history/samba-3.0.23c.html
Apple ships Samba 3.0.10 (16 Dec 2004) with 10.4.8, which makes the shipping version at list 15 versions (and 18 months) behind the current Samba release (30 Aug 2006).
People within the company are obviously quite unhappy with the situation and beyond me looking like a fool for migrating from Windows Server to OS X, I now need to find a solution to the issues.
I would like to know what is the official and Apple recommended way to solve this issue.
    Kind regards,
    Pejvan
It seems like Apple is totally ignoring the issues, users are facing with SMB shares, while their emphasize as a selling point how OS X Server is a great "windows file" server.

    Hiya
    Thanks for the reply.
    >Is there a UPS involved?
I wish there had been. I might not be having to deal with it now! :-)
    >If you boot from the Install Disc & use System Profiler there, does the Same RAM situation? Did you physically >check those slots? Thinking maybe the OS is kicking them out on bootup?
I've had the following suggested to me on another forum - "My guess on the RAM error is this. You have a processor that wants the RAM to be dual channeled and since it reads both A slot are populated it wants both B slots to be populated. Remove A2 and put it in B1"
But unless it is degrading performance I'll probably just leave it.
    > Still can't get it to boot from the Clone holding the Option/alt key at bootup?
I can get it to boot from the Clone using the option key but it's a pretty random event. I can try for ages and then suddenly it'll work. Or it may work first time. It does seems to work more easily after a PRAM zap. The funny thing is that once it is booted up it will re-start in any way I want it to (the boot volume, the clone, a disk, single user mode etc). It is just hard to boot from a full shutdown.
I'm thinking that if I ca get the start-up issue fixed then I can fix the RAID issue at my leisure and even add the hard-drive that the clone is currently on to the RAID array.
    Thanks again.

  • Mountain Lion Server and SMB file sharing

We have in our company data center two Macs, a Power PC 8GB ram with Leopard 10.5.8 and a Mac Pro Quad Core Nehalem 32GB with Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and OSX Server 2.2.1.
The Power Pc SMB File Sharing, with the limit of 10 concurrent users, it works perfectly.
Instead, the Mac Pro SMB File Sharing drops randomly SMB sharing with the consequent loss of the changes made by Client to opened files.
Is there anyone else with the same problem?
Is there any solution, in addition to turn off the Mac Pro and switch to a Windows server?

Yes. It works good however a few tweeks necessary. In parallels configuration I had to change the 1 CPU setting to 2 and allowed a bit more memory. Before that things where a little slow in the virtual macine. Hopefully you are operating with a quad core.

  • Mavericks Server and AD File Sharing

I have been struggling with the setup of shared folders on a Mavericks Server with users connecting to it via our campus AD.
Have bound the server to the Active Directory on campus.
Created folders on a volume connected to the server for each of the individual instructors.
Activated file sharing within the server
Within Server - File Sharing - Clicked the "+" and added that folder.
Clicked the Edit permissions icon. The default is the local admin account of the Server. Changed the local account user to an AD user and give them Read/Write permissions for that folder.
Have lab machines that are bound to the AD.
Users log in via their AD credentials without a problem.
A local home managed account is created on that machine and is deleted on logout.
Have them go to the "Go" menu and connect to Server option.
Enter in the address of the server and connect with their AD username and password.
    The problems are:
    #1
Instructors create "DropOnly" folders within their share folder. They change the permission of "Everyone" to "Write Only"
Students connect the same way and drop folders into that "Drop Only" folder.
Instructors are not able to delete that folder after viewing it. Says they do not have the correct permissions.
Why are the folders that are put in there not taking on the permissions that allow the Instructor full control? (See screen shot of dropped in folder below)
    #2
If the instructor looks at the permissions of their shared folder, Why is it that "everyone" says "no access" even though others can open it. (See Screen shot below)
Things do not seem as straight forward as they did in past server settings. While the creating of shared folders seems easier, the control of them seems less.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Pete

To connect up to 10 Macs for File Sharing, you do not need the complexity and restrictions of Server at all.
Create a new Account on the central machine, not an standard User or an Admin, but a Group, make the Group own the shared folder, and make everyone a member of the Group, with Read/Write access to the files.
System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing ...
... allows you to specify how and what to Share.

  • 10.8 Server file sharing problem

We have a new Mac mini with 10.8 and OS X Server app. The mini has direct attached storage and will be used mainly for File Sharing. There is a repeatable problem/bug with case sensitive folder names and file sharing. For example a folder named "Editorial" is inacessible via "Connect to Server" from a client on the LAN. The same folder with the same permissions, same everthing, except it is named "editorial" works perfectly. Change the uppercase E to a lowercase e and it works. The drive is formatted with normal HFS+. It is Not HFS+ case-sensitive. I have Xserves running 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6 for file sharing and none have this problem.
Has anyone else experieced this? Is there a fix? Other than making everything lowercase.

If you have a problem please start a thread of your own.  Don't get us confused between solving two different problems.
    Simon,
The subject of this thread is dealing with:
    "Server 10.8 file sharing problem"
Specifically for direct attached storage file sharing permissions issue.
Client computers having issues with folder permissions
These are exactly my issues as well. I was hoping to try a solution here or maybe proffer a solution if found elsewhere.  I did not realize each problem should be opened as a separate discussion....

  • WIndows XP and MacBook file sharing

i want to share files between my MB black and my Windows XP
sharing them over a LAN is the most logical way (no internet, files are too large to be transfered with a flash drive)
i have an airport express that i connect to through airport and the airport express has an ethernet cable running from it to the jack in the back of my windows machine
i know that because it is a direct connection i have to have my IP adresses and subnet mask the same on both machines so i set them that way
in system preferences "windows sharing" is on and "personal file sharing" is on (even tho i no that is pointless for this setup) and my firewall is off
in control panel (windows) i have my firewall disabled
i made a "shared" folder on my windows and i right click > properties > sharing tab > i checked the box that says "share this folder on the network"
after this i'm pretty much in the dark so can anyone help me?
    p. s. this post is also posted elsewhere bc i didn't know where to put it
Macbook Black   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

On your MacBook look in Network in your finder. Under your workgroup you should see the Windows machine. My workgroup name is MSHOME yours could be something else. Click on it and it should allow you to connect to the windows machine. Just pick which folders you want to connect to and they should come up in your finder window. Now you can use that shared folder just like it was on your MacBook.

  • Help with s-l-o-w-w-w-w-w  Windows file sharing

After much hair-pulling, I finally got windows file sharing working on our 10.4.4 xserve (opening up ports 137-139 helped a lot!) - however I have noticed that directory navigation from the PC's are extremely slow... it takes about 25-30 seconds to navigate from one dir to another... once you navigate into a dir, and then back out, it seems that the next attempt into that same dir is very fast.
    Any tips are appreciated.
Windows PC's are running XP Pro SP2.

There are several threads about improving Windows performance over smb. Do a search for "smb slow" to find them.
The single biggest thing you can do if you're dealing with a lot of little files is to do: sudo sysctl -w net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0
To add this permanently to your server add 'net.inet.tcp.delayed_ack=0' to /etc/sysctl.conf

  • File sharing problems and horror story (nearly)

I use Leopard on a MacBook Pro, a MacBook and a iMac G4 800 MHz (unsupported model).
I have on the iMac and the MacBook Pro many users (the same ont he two machines) and I always use Fast User Switching.
I have had very few problems with Leopard until now; I like it even if there are some glitches or some new features which are not my cup of tea (hierarchical menus missing from the dock, stacks useless when there are many items, FireWall impossibilities (?) to open specific ports, Back to my Mac working on a Lan but not from outside until now, problems with a few apps (Parallels networking erratic), ...
    Now about File Sharing.
Let say my main account is user1 (Administrator), and I have another user2 also administrator, plus user3, user4 standard users.
On the iMac I activate File Sharing.
On the MacBookPro, as user1, if I connect to the iMac Server (using afp://IPaddress_of_theiMac/) I do NOT get the dialog
"Enter your user name and password to access file server YYY
Connect to server as Guest or as Registered User"
but I directly get the dialog
"Select the volumes you want to mount on YYY"
From this, if I select user1 it mounts with full read/write permissions which is normal. It appears that I am connected with my Apple account user1&mac.com (same as mentionned in the Account panel of System Preferences).
On the other hand, if I try to connect to the user2 account, I only get limited access although in the File Sharing Preferences, user1/iMac is mentionned with full Read/Write preferences for the Home Folder of user2.
What is very surprising is that if I log on the MacBook Pro as user2, or user 3 or user4, then connect to the iMac, I first get the dialog to enter a user name and a password. This gives me access with the correct full permissions on user1/iMac or user2/iMac using the corresponding user name/password pair; this is the usual behaviour which is missing when trying to connect from user1/MacBook Pro.
    Now for the Horror Story!
Trying to understand what was going on with the permissions of the user2/iMac account, I logged in to the iMac as user1, went to the Users folder and from there had a look on the informations about user2 home folder. In the lower part of the pannel, Sharing & Permissions says "You have no access" (which is normal) and this is followed by a table where users and permissions are listed. It seems user1 has Read and Write access in contradiction with the preceding phrase...
Anyway, I tried to modify these authorizations for user2 by clicking on the lock of the Information pannel and entering name and password of the administrator. Didn't go farther than that. By mistake, I hit Command-Delete and user2 was GONE from the list AND NOT ONLY from the list in the Information window! Using Fast User Switching and going to user2, nothing left on the Desktop and NO Home anymore.
In the System Preferences/Accounts panel, user2 was still mentionned.
In the Users folder, no user2 folder anymore.
Using once again Fast User Switching, I logged as user2 and got by magic an all new Home. Nothing left in Documents, Library or other user1 folders. Standard settings for icons, dock, etc.
My first move has been to use a very recent backup to restore everything (Thank you Mike Bombich from Copy Cloner!).
Once everything was back to normal, I had a look at the Trash from user1 and guess what, the Home folder of user2 was there, complete.
So now I am left with two questions
why is it I do not have the same dialogs when connecting from all the accounts although as far as I can see, configurations are the same?
why is it possible, from an Information pannel to delete the account of another user?
    Thank you all for comments!

  • File sharing problems with T500 and T410 and a desktop all running XP Pro SP3

Others have had similar problems with what appears to be an overriding of Windows file sharing by Access Connections.
My three computers, printers and internet modem are networked and working fine both wired and wirelessly except that while the desktop computer in network places can "see" shared folders on the Thinkpads, access to them is denied. Access to desktop shared folders from the Thinkpads works fine.
All the usual sharing settings have been checked and verified by Microsoft support; it does not so far have a solution.
Could this issue please be addressed more thoroughly and/or suitable documentation referenced? I have read the blurb about Access Connections but can't make a lot of sense of it.
    Thanks

  • Novice to setting up Windows file sharing in order to connect with macbook

    Hi everyone,
I have been having major trouble trying to set up my Dell laptop to set up windows file sharing with my macbook pro (just got it yesterday). I am not very technically savvy, but I did enable that my C folder be shared on the network, so when I go to network places, it shows up.
I currently have my mac and dell connected by a cat 5 cable, so they are directly connected to each other. However, I have no idea where to go from here! I have read many support sites and pages, but it doesn't make sense to me. I need a watered down version of how to make my hard drive a server.
I also enabled file sharing on my mac , which was simple, but i am confused if i even need to do that.
Thanks in advance for any help. It will be GREATLY appreciated!!

    1) You aren't using a router or BaseStation in this little network?
    2) If not, you will need to set IP addresses manually. Otherwise you'll have a connection, but no data flow.
    3) Your shared drive on the Dell will show up in Neighborhood on the Dell. that's normal.
BD- Have you seen a good tutorial for this?
PS, Amanda - sharing out your entire "C" drive is not a good idea. Once we get you networked...it will be possible for the mac to delete a folder that's inside the Dell's "C" drive. Could be a system folder that you blast...there is no RecycleBin when you delete files across a network.
Don't mean to scare ya, just showing you the possibilities.

  • Apple has broken Windows file sharing in Snow Leopard

    Hi Folks,
    Having a serious problem here.
Apple has broken Windows file sharing in Snow Leopard. Many others on the forums are experiencing the same thing. I was almost ready to fully switch to the Mac, then I thought I would upgrade to SL, then this happened...
OK so I have a Windows Server 2003 Small Business Server. It's pretty much the same as the standard Windows 2k3 server except that it throws in a few extras (And takes some things away). I'm also lead to believe, that there is a difference w.r.t. password signing/encryption or something?
Anyways, if I try and connect to my SBS server with the correct username and password (In different formats: Domain\username or just username), I get a "Unable to connect to server. Check IP..." blablabla. This happens after the password prompt has come up.
If I try and connect to my standard windows 2003 server box, it does work, just very slowly (Again, referring to the whole thing about how SBS treats password security differently).
So I ask a couple of things:
    1) It would be appreciated if any other forums members could maybe help me get this going?
    2) A plea to Apple - please fix this. It all worked perfectly in Leopard!
Apple probably haven't tested SL against SBS 2003 server. A lot of companies don't do this either as they think that it is just the same as the standard 2003 server (Which i hope Apple have tested against!)
    Thanks guys

I have the same problem. Here are the details:
External Hard Drive with LAN (Buffalo Drivestation Flexnet: http://tinyurl.com/kk5mmu)
    Mac OS X 10.6, on 3 different Mac Mini's
This error occurs on all computers when trying to copy a file to the 'SHARE' sharepoint on the SMB Drive:
"The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "filename" can't be read or written. (Error Code -36)"
    I CAN
Access / Read / Write this Drive in Windows XP
Access / Read / Write this Drive in OS X 10.5.7
Make new folder on this Drive in OS X 10.6
See a .DS_Store file which 10.6 has written to the Drive
Save a document to the drive from the Text Edit save dialog in 10.6
Save a document to the drive from the Pages save dialog in 10.6
Duplicate a document on the drive using Terminal (cp Untitled.pages Untitled2.pages) in 10.6
Copy anything to any other computer on the Network using 10.6
    I CAN NOT
Copy a document to the Drive in 10.6
Duplicate a document on the Drive in 10.6
Save a PDF or JPG to the drive from the Preview save dialog in 10.6
This error happens every time. It is easily reproducible.
I hope that this information helps Apple get on to the problem soon.

  • Why did I have to enable Windows File Sharing to share files between two Mavericks iMacs?

File Sharing failed between my Mavericks iMacs.  The console logs showed that the target iMac saw the ntlmv2 protocol as unknown to the kdc.  I fixed it by enabling Windows File Sharing on the target Mavericks iMac.  I had tried disabling SMB on both iMacs and leaving AFP on, but then nothing happened when I tried to connect.  Why did I have to enable Windows File Sharing to share files between two Mavericks iMacs?

When you enable file sharing you need to have either SMB (Windows) or AFP (historically Apple-native) file sharing checked. The default in Mavericks is SMB, and not AFP.
If you uncheck both, then the system will turn off file sharing. Apple supports the use of both SMB and AFP connections in Mavericks, so with only AFP enabled you should have been able to establish a connection, but there could be a small bug or configuration-specific snafu that you're encountering.
With AFP enabled only, try pressing Command-K in the Finder to open the Connect To Server dialogue, and in here enter the address to the system using afp:// as the protocol, such as the following (the name can be looked up in the Sharing system preferences):
    afp://my_imac.local

i can have the copier send the files to theire home directory on the server, but my user will have to wait 5 minutes to see it on thiere desktop (i sync theire home folder every 5 minutes) or do a "sync now".
it would be best to just have it send to thier computer direcly.

  • Windows File Sharing Folder Name Error

Hi, I’m new to the forums but I really need help and I was hoping someone could help?
I’m using a Mac os x server. We are having problems with the Windows file sharing. When we share drives they share fine. But on windows machines some of the folders in these drives have problems. Some of the folders names in the share have different names.
For example in one folder we had a folder called “PROPOSALS” this is fine on the Mac workstations but on windows machines the folder name will show completely different on windows. The folder proposals showed as “PDJ45~6H”. This has happened all over the share to loads of folders at random. Thats not all though if we tried to open these folders we get an error saying that it’s not accessible.
This has happened all over the server meaning loads of data is inaccessible by some of us on windows machines. What is causing the problem and what can I do to sort this out?
    Thanks Tom

More notes... If I enable firewall on the MiniMac and allow Windows File Sharing, the Mini Mac only responds on port 139 Not port 445. Good, this is the same as the iMac default behavior, however, the login still fails.

  • Windows file sharing can no longer work after tiger upgrade

hi guys, ive been searching the web to find a cure on my problem for a long time now, but still no success, hope someone could help me out.
ok heres my problem, before the upgrade, file sharing with windows is perfect, with no problems at all, but when i upgraded one of our mac to tiger, windows file sharing is not working anymore, i cant connect or see my windows xp computer on the network and vice versa, windows cannot see my mac with tiger on the network.
Our other 2 macs here running in panther are fine( meaning, windows file sharing is working)
Now we've bought a new computer which is a mac pro with fresh install of leopard, i setup the windows file sharing, but i was surprised that i cant see my windows xp box too on the network, and vice versa, the pc cant see my mac pro too on the network, whats wrong with tiger and leopard file sharing???? please help me, im so frustrated cant make it to work. i know, my pc computer has nothing to do with it, coz i can still connect to a mac with panther os. hope someone can help me fix this... please..

This site has some information on file sharing and printer sharing between Windows and Macs for various combinations of OSs. The Leopard repository isn't quite as mature as the Tiger repository, but there's a lot of good information at this site. Hopefully, it will be helpful to you in resolving your Windows/Mac issues.
