10.8.5 not recognizing DVD-r

This is driving me nuts.  i have DVD-r's  from my older macbook running 10,6 that are not recogized by my mac mini.  What is strange is that all these DVD's were recorded at the same time the exact same way and are all the same brand from the same box.  Some are recognized and others are not.  The times when they are not recognized the mini thinks that a blank DVD was inserted.  When i pop them into a DVD player they all play.  I have tried everything from VCL player to handbrake to read them.....no luck.  Anyone have any ideas as to what can be done?

Good news.
I would recommend Toast 8 for burning. I had problems with some DVDs and also DVD and CD-R/W not being properly recognized by the disk utility. I could not erase some of the R/W.
Since I got toast I can erase them all.
I have successfully burned DVD+R, -R and also DVD+R/W and DVD-R/W as well as CDs
The only DVD I can't read or use is a DVD-RAM which one of my standalone recorders can burn to.
But everything else is fine.
I have never had a bad burn using Toast.

    Hello:
This is not an area I have much experience in......I rarely insert DVDs and I have never had a similar problem.
When the DVD is in the drive (and DVD players is open) click on File>get disk info.

  • HP DVD Writer 740b not recognizing DVDs

My 740b will not recognize DVDs. I have no problems with CDs but any DVD I put in the tray isn't recognized. I initially thought the problem was with the DVD+R I was using but I also have a Slimline s3132w with a DVD writer installed and it burned and read the same discs with no problems. I tried several commercal DVDs (movies) and when I try to play them I get a no disc in drive error. I also have a Lite-On DVD SOHD-16P9S DVD ROM on the same system and have no problems what so ever playing the same discs. I have tried replacing the ATA data cables post attempting the trouble shooting tips given on the support web page. I have upgraded the firmware hoping this might alleviate the problem with no success. As I stated before this problem is only with DVDs, the drive has no problems what so ever with CDs. I have a feeling the problem my be with my updating to Windows XP SP3. I had done so before but removed it because my Linksys Wireless Adapter(PCI) wouldn't function with it installed. That problem has been repaired and now this. The system the drive is installed in is as follows:
     HP a1203w
                      cpu: Athlon 64 3800+ @ 2.2ghz
video: ATI 9550 w/256mb video memory
audio: Sound Blaster Audigy Z2S Platinum
             boot drive: Seagate ST340014A 40GB
    secondary drive: Seagate ST3250620A 250GB

OK chalk me up too to the list of users whose HP DVD Writer 740b cannot "see" blank DVD's and CD's.
Full marks to HP in that I am still smoothly running a Pavilion Media Centre PC EG211AA-ABG m7288a. I find the older plug compatablity useful and have beefed up RAM making it still a powerful "retro" media machine after all these years.....
However after a power failure caused a disk error that trashed my Windows XP and while it restored (as in full reset) like a trooper I took the opportunity to do a clean upgrade to Windows 7 (64bit) seeing as XP is no longer supported. And yes my HP DVD Writer 740b cannot detect blank DVD's and CD's although it can read those with content. It seems to be acting more like a CD ROM drive than a Read Write drive.
I have tried ALL the suggested fixes to no avail and yes my "shell detection" service is operational and on automatic.
But here's the rub as it were. My HP Support Assistant assures me that I have a HP DVD Writer 740b installed and running ED24 firmware. So I was hopeful when I found that there was an HP upgrade from the ED24 firmware (sp26595.exe - DVD-RW 16X HP DVD Writer 740b Drive Firmware Update ). HOWEVER even if I run it in XP compatable mode it returns the message that I do NOT have a HP DVD Writer 740b installed and therefore no upgrade is required.
The label on the front of the drive is "LightScribe DVD +/- Writer / CD-Writer".
Is the HP Assistant wrong in identifying it as an HP DVD Writer 740b? Also could the drive be getting confused thinking a blank disc is a lightscribe disc in upsidedown ready for printing? I have to try and find a way to reload the LabelPrint software (have the LSS) that was lost when I upgraded to Windows 7. Probably can't retrieve it from the old XP recovery disk.
Any NEW thoughts (especially as to why firmware upgrade does not see the drive) most wrlcome as apart from this one little thing the Pavilion is performing like a trooper and is an excellent advertisement for the durability of HP products (which is why we brought 3 HP laptops as well.
    Hopeful thanks in advance.

  • Early 2009 mac pro not recognizing DVD drives

My Mac Pro 8 core since upgrading to Mavericks is not recognizing my Blu Ray drive unless I unplug it and re plug it in while hot.....what is this issue?

I think I have a similar sitch. I just bought a rMPB 15 with Mavericks and hooked it up to the same setup of my old 2009 17" MPB. I inserted the Logic Pro 9 install disk in my external LaCie DVD RW drive and the light on the front keeps flashing steadily as if the disk is being read but it never mounts on the desktop. I ejected the disk and installed the Logic Studio Audio Content 1 disk and it mounted fine. I inserted the Logic Pro 9 install disk into the drive on the old 17" and it mounted fine there as well. So I am at a loss as to what the glitch is and I can't be sure if its the DVD RW drive, the rMPB itself, Mavericks, or both or neither or....????

  • Mac OS not recognizing DVD with Lightroom Active

Has anyone found that a DVD is not recognized by Mac OS when Lightroom is active? Once I load the DVD to export images, it's not in Finder or the desktop. I've checked my DVD preferences in Mac OS and tried "Ask me" or "Open another application (Lightroom)." The only workaround is to kill Lightroom, load the DVD, then reopen Lightroom. Does anyone have a fix for this?

    >Does your computer see a blank DVD when inserted with LR active
Yes... Mac Pro w/ Leopard 10.5.2.
Are you running any Western Digital software for external drives? I had a problem with it a version or so ago, and had to uninstall it to make blank media behave properly. Haven't messed with it since and haven't had any problems.

  • My new iMac is not recognizing DVD R discs for burning. Help please?

Fuji and Verbatim DVD+R not being recognized in DVD burner in iMac.  Burned audio CD's just fine.

If you want to save yourself a lot of headaches go out and buy a Tray Load external DVD burner that connects to the computer by USB.
The Apple, Not So, Superdrive is very picky about discs you can use. Or simply your new Mac came with a bad Superdrive.

  • Dvd drive not recognizing dvds but recognizes all other disks

My dvd drive on my macbook will recognize cds both burned and retail. It will recognize mac formated (burned) dvds. But it will not recognize any other dvds. It burns in a non mac format (ie burning a linux ISO image). I was just watching a movie on here the other day with no problems.
    anyone have any thoughts?

    [Edit to above Post]
the DVD drive itself wasn't dead. It was a software based issue. Whether it was an OS issue or a installed software issue is undeterminted. I did a full backup and then reinstalled Mac OSX Lion and the issue was fixed. I do not know what software I installed unfortunetly.
    Hope this helps other people.

  • DVD burner not recognizing DVDs

I've had a mini for quite some time now, and recently in the past few weeks I've had a strange problem where it no longer recognizes burnable/burned DVDs. CDs work fine, retail DVDs on movies work fine, but I am unable to access any of the things I've burned myself.
I've tried 3 of the types of burnable DVDs, and have even dug up some of my old DVDs I burned myself on this computer and they all do not mount. I've checked the system info, and the drive is still being detected as a DVD burner, so I am at a complete loss as to what could be causing this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I'm having exactly the same problem as this.
The last discs that I burned would have been in October/November, and after that I noticed that the Mac would no longer recognise burned DVD's.
As I need to burn some more discs I've been testing in the past few days and can confirm:
    1. Will not read from burned DVD-R
    2. Will not recognize blank DVD-R
    3. Will recognize blank DVD-RW, but will not burn to them
I'm now searching around to see if it's a hardware or a firmware problem.
The data on the drive from System Profiler is as follows:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-835F:
    Firmware Revision: GGND
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
    Media: No
    Any ideas anyone?

  • Superdrive recognizing CDs but not recognizing DVD-Rs and rejects them

Within the last few weeks my superdrive will not recognize any DVD-Rs. I have tried several blanks and and a few video DVD-Rs that I read previously. My drive is not a Pioneer but is a Sony (see below). Anyone have any suggestions.
    SONY DVD RW DW-U10A:
    Firmware Revision: A43i
    Interconnect: ATAPI
    Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
    Cache: 8192 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
    Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
    Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
    Media: No

Nick,Here's a couple of things to try:
Update to 10.4.7 (Use Apple Menu > Software Update).
Use a drive cleaning disk (The tolerances for DVDs are much tighter than CDs so dust could be the culprit).

Ho boy! We have had several problems in recent threads with this dvd drive that I call the drive from the twilight zone. As I recall, it usually ended up a drive replacement, which is very painless and only costs $31. See:

  • PowerMac G4 (AGP) not recognizing DVDs

So I just got a G4 (AGP model) and the included drive, I noticed, wouldn't recognize a DVD disc; CDs, yes, but not DVDs. I removed it and installed another (internal) drive, a DVD Burner, just to have it read a DVD. In fact, it's the Tiger Installation DVD that I'm trying to get it to read. So I get the new drive in just fine, and test a CD. Works fine. I try to test a DVD, and again it doesn't even mount it. Can anyone help me?

    Hi Sherrod!
Can you tell us which vendor and model optical drive was originally installed, and which vendor/model optical drive you replaced it with?
Certain drives have limited support with different versions of OS X. When Apple releases new OS updates or upgrades, they usually include additional optical drive support.
    #1 Try resetting the NVRAM/PRAM: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
#2 Use Disk Utility (from the Utilities folder) to repair disk permissions, then reboot and try again.
#3 If the above 2 steps fail to resolve the issue, update to Mac OS X 10.3.9 (the last update to Panther): http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxcombinedupdate1039.html
#4 Make sure your AGP G4 is running with the latest firmware: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 (I think it probably is since you're running OS X...but still double-check)
#5 If all else fails, try using PatchBurn 3.1.4 to create a profile for your optical drive: http://www.patchburn.de/download.html
#6 Check out this compatibility database to ensure the optical drive you installed has been tested to be fully compatible with your system (note that it might not be listed): http://forums.xlr8yourmac.com/drivedb/search.drivedb.lasso
    If nothing else...
Open the Console application (in the Utilities folder), which will open the console.log file be default. From the File menu, select "Open System Log."
With both Console windows open, insert a DVD-ROM disc and see what messages (if any) are added to the bottom of these windows. Copy them and post back to us, along with more info on your optical drives.
Here's some other misc. articles I dug up on Apple's site:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58382

  • Superdrive not recognizing dvd-rw

can someone please help me? I am trying to make a copy of a movie that is on a dvd-rw. When I stick the dvd-rw in the drive, it's telling me that I just inserted a blank dvd. Why is it doing this and how can I correct it? It reads and writes everything else just fine. Thanks in advance.

OH Thanks BD- coming from a master too! hahaha Now I can sleep comfortably...which reminds me- I am falling down tired.... I do enjoy reading all the posts... so much info.
While here- I must say- in the several days since I got agnes back, even if I cannot read my saved to disk emails from 10.3 days (yet)- I am so joyous that safari has not quit once. NOT ONCE! It had been thrice a day on the better days... to like twenty on the bad ones... OY!
Ok I go. Good luck and peace friends!

  • MacBook Pro not recognizing DVDs

I have a 2 Ghz week 10 MacBook Pro, and it just recently started doing this. The DVD is not bad, i checked both of the DVDs i used on other DVD players. This is what happens:
    -i insert the DVD
-it starts spinning and DVD Player launches, but stays in window mode
    -the movie DOES NOT play
then if i touch any controls such as play or rewind, it says Supported Disc Not Available. i also have MacTheRipper and that doesnt show the DVD either. as i said before, ive used DVD Player succesfully along with MacTheRipper. Any help would be appreciated.
    -UnBiased

I'm also having problems. My MacBook Pro 17 spits out blank Memorex DVD+RW media after spinning around for about 45 seconds. The Media says it's OK at 4x, and the drive is also spec'd at 4x?! My buddy's HP PC burns these DVDs just fine. Apple has (supposedly) replaced the drive it still does the same thing.
    Any ideas/thoughts out there? Thanx.

  • Win7 Home Pre not recognizing DVD drive

  • Adobe Elements 12 not recognizing DVD drive, Help please!!

In my Adobe Elements 12 for some reason when I go to burn, it saying no burners detected. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how can it be fixed. Thank you so much in advance.

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on? Have you updated from 12 to 12.1 using an opened project's Help Menu/Update? Please do so.
Assuming a Windows compute for now.
Is this "no burner found" situation described as "it never worked before" or "it worked before but not now"?
If it has worked before, then I would ask
    1. Do you have iTunes on your computer? Have you recently updated it?
If so, you might consider uninstalling both Premiere Elements 12 and iTunes, and then reinstalling only Premiere Elements 12. I would go through the scenario
    1. Uninstall Premiere Elements 12 and iTunes via Control Panel
    2. Do a ccleaner run through (regular and registry parts)
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
    3. Reinstall of Premiere Elements 12 only.
We will be watching for your results.
    Thank you.
