Satis has good recommendations.  If the don't do the trick...
You may be able to improve the speed with some software work but it could also be your disk is corrupt or failing.
Try an SMC Reset:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Is it faster now?  If not, proceed.
Backup your data immediately:
Before proceeding you should make sure you have a current backup.  If it has been getting slower over time your disk could be a failing slowly.  SATA drives have two retry modes: short and long.  They can continue operating as read errors are increasing.  The long retry cycle is very long and can cause significant performance degradation.  If it has started long retries then it is likely to get worse and eventually fail.  SSDs also have a failure mode where the fail slowly.
Time Machine Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427

and
Mac Performance Guide: http://www.thesafemac.com/mpg/
Safe Mode:
- Reboot the system in Safe Boot mode.
- Power on the Mac and when you hear the bong, hold down the shift key until it is booted.
- Be patient, this will take some time while it checks the filesystem.
If it runs faster in Safe Boot mode then it is probably third-party software compatibility issues.
- Restart.
- Does it run faster after the restart?
Run Disk Utility (found in the Applications folder):
-In Disk Utility look at the S.M.A.R.T. Status.
If it says the disk has a hardware problem that can't be repaired then stop.
Your system could be in danger of failing at any time and you need to replace the disk soon.
  Back your system up twice.
(You will need a second external disk for the second backup.)
Consider using Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper! for the second backup to clone the disk.
Jump to the Hardware replacement section and seek expert help.
Repair Disk Permissions and Verify Disk.  If Disk Permissions reports errors, don’t worry.  That is normal.  If Verify Disk reports errors then they need to be repaired.  Otherwise skip to the reinstall OS X section.
Repairing your system disk:
- Boot in recovery mode.
(Boot and when you hear the bong hold down the
Command and R keys simultaneously until you see the recovery screen.)
- Select disk utility.
- Select your system drive.
- Repair Disk.
- Did it complete without errors?
If not you may need a new disk.  Seek expert help.
If it completed normally then reboot.
-Did it run faster and is it more responsive?
Reinstall OS X:
If it is still slow you should reinstall OS X.
- Boot in Recovery Mode again.
- Follow the instructions to reinstall OS X.
- Now does it run faster?
Hardware replacement or upgrade?
Hopefully by now your Mac is back to its normal speed.  If a hardware repair is indicated take it to an Genius bar at an Apple store for a free diagnosis and estimate of repairs.  You can compare their estimate with DIY repairs.
Genius reservation http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/ .
or find an Apple Authorized Service Provider https://locate.apple.com/country
You can speed it up further by upgrading some hardware.  For memory, disk or SSD replacements and upgrades check out OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/, Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/ and Kingston http://www.kingston.com/us/.
Consider an upgrade to 8 GB or RAM ($100).
If your Mac has a disk and it won’t repair properly, is low on disk space, or you just want a considerably faster disk,, check out an upgrade to an SSD-Hybrid disk. Google "Seagate XT".
Good luck.  May the software fixes do the trick.

My 2011 MBP has begun running slow with frequent 'spinning beach ball' events. I'm running Yosemite and wondered if I should of use the original install disk for a maintenance reinstall. I presume I'd have to download Yosemite again, though I'd be happy just using Snow Leopard again too.
    Thanks for the help.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • Transferring photos from camera or memory card causes iPhoto to hang up with the spinning beach ball - why

Transferring photos from camera or memory card causes iPhoto to hang up with the spinning beach ball - why?  This happens only on a 5 year old iMac running 10.6.8.  It is a recent developmemt.  All other machines have no problen with the same card.

I click on the send feedback everytime it pops up with the force quit, so they'er getting it.
That sends a crash report. Its doubtful that these are ever seen by a human being, but more likely datamined. Sending feedback reaches an actual person.
My guess from yourdescription is that the portion of the OS (note, OS, not iPhoto) that manages the importing process is what's crashing.

  • Spinning beach ball and slower performance

I have been noticing that the performance of my iMac is becoming slower, with the dreaded spinning beach ball apearing whenever I change between applications to perform relatively basic functions. However, the worst is when I am in iTunes, where I experience the spinning beach ball for several minutes after connecting and choosing a device, and I typically cannot do anything else in other applications until it stops. As for other applications, I have nearly abandoned Aperture because anything from scrolling to adjustments will cause the spinning beach ball to return several seconds to minutes.
My iMac is a 2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with nearly 30g's left on the hard drive. I have the memory max'd at 4GB. I am running OS X 10.7.2 with all apps completely up to date. Overall, I am doing basic functions in Bento, Pages, and surfing Safari on a daily basis with only the minimal applications needed open at once.
Is there anything I can do to resolve this?

Hi Todd, thanks for the reply.  Actually, I do have CS6 via my Creative Cloud membership but I'm having to work in 5.5 on this particular client's system for a project.
I was hoping that the above solution would be the answer I was searching for but alas, that is apparently not the case, since the issues have returned and the spinning beach ball continues to churn... (nothing like the elation of finding a solution only to later feel crushing defeat as the problem returns...)
The issues were resolved for a while, so perhaps this post may still be able help someone.  I'd rather be working in CS6 right now, and I'm pushing for this client to do the upgrade as well.  Considering how much time is being wasted waiting for the Mac to continue after hanging every other keystroke, I'd think the client would be anxious to make the change!

The movies from my Iphone 5 are not coming across on Apple TV. The little spinning beach ball appears like it is thinking.  It use to work fine but quick working a month ago. I mirror from my phone to the Apple TV.  Still images and everything I do on the phone is mirrored on to the TV except when I want to show a YouTube video or any video and then the screen on the phone and the TV screen go black and the spinning beach ball appears.  The videos open right up on the phone if I do not have mirroring on and going through the Apple TV.  I just downloaded the latest update to the phone it did not fix the problem.  Please help.  Thanks, Elvis G

    Hello Elvis G,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help in this situation. It contains a number of troubleshooting steps concerning device issues. You may want to consider a reset, then testing to see if the issue is resolved:
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1430
    How to reset
You should reset your device as a last resort and only if you can't restart it.
To reset, press and hold both the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons for at least 10 seconds, until you see the Apple logo.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    BobbyD

  • Major slow down - spinning beach ball all the time

My MacPro increasingly suffers from major slow downs, mainly when using iTunes and renaming, deleting songs. My library is on a NAS server. Sometimes my Mac becomes unresponsive for minutes, simple things like resizing windows takes extremly long. Something ain't right!
Here is an example: I wanted to delete a few songs from iTunes, which virtually locked my Mac up for minutes. Console says:

Hope anyone can make sense out of that!

There have been loads of threads dealing with SL & spinning beach balls. I have had/having these issues still.
    Current setup:
    MacBook Pro 2.53Ghz running SL 10.6.4 - non-Apple installed HD (seaGate 320BG 7200RPM)
Issues: SBBOD at any given time, some more frequent than other times (no specific time interval). Have reboot, SMART status, Apple hardware test, re-installed SL, root user. Results: still the same issue.
    Possible workaround (test in progress):
Removed seaGate 320BG 7200RPM and put back the original 5400RPM disk and mount seaGate 320BG 7200RPM with an external USB case. Results: snappy as he*ll, no more issues.
Next round: refit the seaGate 320BG 7200RPM once more to see if just removing/adding disks helps.
If the SBBOD then still occurs, the only conclusion I can make, is that the seaGate 320BG 7200RPM is somehow not compatible. This could be due to its speed or some other issue (having this disk external causes 0 SBBOD issues).
If this will not work, I will then proceed to clone the data of my seaGate 320BG 7200RPM to the original 5400RPM Apple fitted disk and take it from there.
If that setup will neither work, I will then finally move back to the shop and have Apple check it out.
    Good luck.

  • Brutally slow, spinning beach ball all the time

In the last few months my Intel iMac has slowed to a crawl, making it virtually unusable. The simplest task (opening a new window, dragging a folder, scrolling up or down in Safari) results in the spinning beach ball, often for minutes on end.
I have used Disk Utility to repair permissions, dragged the Fonts and Preferences files from my user Library to the desktop and restarted, and done an Archive and Install, with no improvement. I have 4GB of RAM and at least 10GB of free disk space. Activity Monitor doesn't snow any obvious problems, but often showed the balky programs in red with a "(not responding)" next to each.
Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated, as I have now resorted to using my wife's laptop as my computer is essentially useless.

With 4GB you should not be paging to disk, but it would not hurt to monitor pageout information. You can do this with *Activity Monitor*, top via Terminal, or if you have installed Xcode, the *vm_stat 60* command from a Terminal session.
What you are looking for is very high pageout activity. But again, with 4GB of memory that should not be an issue, unless you like to run some really memory intensive programs.
After I upgraded to Leopard, I had some slowness that I did not understand. It turned out that when running Tiger, I had a licensed copy of *Little Snitch* installed. However, I did not upgrade Little Snitch to a Leopard compatible version, when I installed Leopard. My problem turned out to be that I had NOT uninstalled the Tiger version of Little Snitch, and as a result its Tiger compatible bits were causing me slow downs when running Leopard.
I actually put up with this for awhile, until I decide to do some house cleaning on System PrefPanes I was no longer really using. That is when I accidentially discovered that my performance came back after getting rid of the Tiger version of Little Snitch.
That was my experience. And I did not really get Beachballs, but I did notice the slowness.
I am suggesting that maybe you have something installed on your system that is not on your Wife's system which is affecting your performance.

  • Spinning beach ball suddenly? MacBook Pro slowed to a *crawl*

Was updated to 10.6.2 - All of a sudden last night, I started getting the spinning beach ball for like minutes at a time. No better today after multiple reboots - when the system starts up the ball spins and it takes over 10 minutes for my desktop to fully load up and look normal. Then...if I try and open Finder, Mail, Safari, 8-10 minutes of spinning ball, ultimately it WILL respond, but on the next mouse click back to 8-10 minutes of spinning ball and no work getting done When Safari opens after the 10 minutes or so, it works somewhat OK.
Nothing in the system monitor is an obvious probelm - and the CPU usage graphics completely stop working when the ball is spinning a long time.
    Here's what I've tried:
verify disk - both from install disk and desktop
verify/repair permissions - same as above - one warning keeps popping up "SUID File.....ARDAGENT has been modified and will not be repaired"??
(verify/repair log at bottom of message)
    Reinstalled 10.6 from DVD
    Reset PRAM/NVRAM
    Reset SMC
Used Font Book to resolve duplicates (only a few)
Still no go - everything runs SO SLOW, ten minutes to reboot and ten minutes if I click on finder at a time of the spinning ball? I have not tried software update yet - frankly haven't had time to wait out the spinning ball!! Time machine seems to still be backing up, mail comes in (mail takes ten minutes to open as well), etc.
Some things done in the last few days - uninstalled some old printers a few days ago - and installed a Lexmark pro905 with 10.6 drivers - all of that has been working fine for a few days. Yesterday one thing I did was relocate a VmFusion "Virtual Machines" folder from "Documents" up to my \Users\tomscal\Virtual Machines. Again, that didn't seem at the time to cause any troubles, I worked late into the afternoon after making that change.
    Any suggestions??
    Tom

Well, I tried most of the tips suggested above, and tip/tricks found elsewhere. Nothing worked, I continued to have 10-15 minute hangs with the beach ball spinning. If I clicked on a folder in like Finder, ten minutes would go by then the folder would open. Rebooting took 10-15 minutes.
Finally out of frustration I erased the hard disk using the Disk Utility on the Snow Leopard 10.6 disc, and used migration assistant to restore.
Much to my surprise it worked - the clean install/restore is working OK at the moment.
Hard/long way to fix the problem though.....

  • My Macbook pro started running incredibly slow and I am getting the spinning beach ball of death across all applications.

I have no idea why this is happening. I normally use Word, Excel, Google Chrome and sometimes Photoshop when using my computer and then one day it started getting super slow. This is my etrecheck.
Computer running slow all of the sudden. Getting spinning beach ball of death through all applications all the time. Computer losing charge while not plugged in.

    Linc,
Thanks for taking the time to reply. The beachball is literally every other minute. I tried to take the time to it's most basic second and it was 4:01:04 - I am currently backpacking in Laos with my bf and we are travel writers/photographers and he is helping me get this info.
We didn't know what anonymyze meant but we tried to make sure you couldn't see my name. So far the spinning beach ball has occurred 4 times in just writing these 4 lines.
We tried to make sure we didn't overwhelm you with the 4000 lines or more but just did a couple days worth of text. Thanks again for your time.

    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Authoritative, Real-time, Spinning Beach Ball Diagnostic Tool/Utility?

    Dear Mac Mavens,
Is there an effective, real-time diagnostic tool/utility that authoritatively explains why my Mac is so-darn-slow...soooo mmaaannnnyyyyy times during the day?
The spinning beach ball is ubiquitous on my machine.
    For example:
Sometimes--but not always--it can take Evernote, MS-PowerPoint, MS-Word, MS-Excel, and the like, as long as 3-5 minutes to become active.
Another example: Viewing "Open Recent" in just about any application can take 2-4 minutes.
Sometimes, again, not always: it can take 2-3 minutes for a browser tab to open.
To date, I have purchased, and run, virtually all the major "Keeper," "Cleaner," "Go Faster," "Tools" utilities (each promising to speed up a Mac)...but none of them either report a meaningful problem (however, some of the do report many, many trivial problems)--and none of them have had any effect whatsoever on system performance.
Also, I constantly check "Monitor" (which routinely reports CPU at ~3-7%) and iStat Mini (which routinely reports CPU at ~5%). Additionally, many, many times, I've examined the console.logs looking (without success) for anomalous events.
Hence this request. Is there a useful tool/utility/magic incantation which can help diagnosis this productivity-sapping issue and explain--in real-time--the cause of a spinning beach ball?
Conjecture: Given the consistently low reported CPU utilization...16Gb memory (1333 MHz DDR3)...1Tb SATA disk...2.8 GHz Intel Core 5 (1 processor, 4 cores)...in this somewhat beefy Mid-2010 27-inch--could the dominant constraint be the internal bus? If the bus is relatively slow...would that explain the too, too frequent beach ball?
Your specific suggestions are welcomed and greatly appreciated; thank you.
    Plane Wryter

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • 10.4.7 Runs Slow, Spinning Beach Ball, "kass" takes over system

To the helpful frequenters of this forum:
Since installing Tiger and updating to 10.4.7 recently, I have experienced some major system slow downs on my computer. I am running a Titanium Powerbook G4 with 512MB RAM and 12GB free (from a 60GB hard drive).
My problems seem to center on Mail 2 app, which runs very slowly when accessing the IMAP server (a problem I never experienced with Mail 1 in the days of Panther). However, it extends to other applications: when launching iTunes and Safari, I often get a spinning beach ball and a 10-20 second hang that I never had before. Sometimes closing programs can take a long time. Force quit often does not respond, but for some reason pressing my laptop power key (as if to turn off the computer) helps to get things jump-started.
In my Activity Monitor, there is a Process called "kass" that is eating up anywhere from 20-30% of my processor. I think that this is connected to some sort of Key Access software that might have been installed on my computer for my college access, but I am not sure. Here are the details from Activity Monitor:

What I don't understand is why this is flaring up now, since the Key Access has always been there (on OS 10.1, 10.2, and 10.3 as I upgraded sequentially). Perhaps there is some sort of bad interaction with the 10.4.7 upgrade? I'm not really sure, but I was wondering how I would go about eliminating this hang up. It might be the source of so much slowing down on my computer!
    Thank you very much,
    Matthew

    Thanks for your help, everyone.
I seem to have solved the problem. The "kass" function was linked to KeyAccess, an app made by Sassafrass. This app was installed on my computer by my University so that I could use certain programs (such as Adobe Photoshop) while on the school network by obtaining a key through the school Internet connection. For some reason this process started to take over my computer once I upgraded to 10.4.7, so I just removed the application from my computer all together. Now the hang-ups in other programs, as well as the IMAP email seem to be back to their old speediness.
    Strange how these things work.

  • My MacBook is very slow and constantly has the spinning beach ball of death!!!

In the last couple if weeks my MacBook has suddenly slowed down a LOT. Sometimes it takes ages for it to boot up when I turn it on and at other times not as long. Then once I log in, as soon as I click on something, the spinning beach ball appears and won't go away so I have to force it to restart.
It runs a little bit faster in safe mode and if I log in as a guest user, but it's still relatively slow.
So far I have tried the following:
    - starting in safe mode
    - resetting PRAM
    - turning off then pressing ctrl, option, left shift and the power button for 10 seconds then turn it back on
    - repairing disk permissions
I've been told that it might be best to reformat my mac, but in order to do this I need to back up. I bought a Seagate Back Up Plus 1TB and tried to use time machine. After a while a message popped up saying "Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder.". There is something on my hard drive, but I cant tell if my mac has fully backed up or not.
    Any suggestions?

  • Slow and spinning beach balls after 10.8.2 update

After the initial install of ML 10.8 for the most part the sytem seemed to run fine.  Very few snags.  But after the 10.8.1 and now the 10.8.2 updates I am finding slower and slower times for programs to boot and waiting to be able to type anything and spinning beach balls all the time.  I have noticed this continuously bringing up the contacts program, MS word, Pages, Apple Mail etc.   Initial booting of the computer is slower as well and often has a frozen beach ball for a minute or so before it unfreezes and proceeds.  Also huge slow down in printing from my wifi printer which before was super fast.  I have reset the SMC, Pram, did disk permission repairs and all of those items.  Nothing has changed anything.  This is a early 15" 2011 MBP unit with 8 gig of ram, 750 gig hard drive with only 250 gig in use, 2.2 I7 processor and Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB.  All software is updated to latest versions.  This slower and slower and waiting thing is getting continuously worse all the time and very annoying.   If anyone has any ideas I am open to suggestions to find a solution.  Thanks much.

Seems we have a lot of people with simular problems but a lot of different combonations.  Cleaning caches, reseting Pram, taking almost everything out of login items even using a program to defrag the unit,  (mine is not a SSD drive), making sure all apps etc. are up to date and are ML ok etc. I have all done.  I even had the unit tested by the Gen. Bar guys to make sure the hardware was ok including the drive even though I was pretty sure it was as I did not have this problem before ML.  All checked out fine.  I have not in the past had any problem with Time Machine backups but??????????   I only use a usb external and plug it in when I want to do a back up so it is not doing the backup thing all the time.  I have thought of doing the erase and clean install  which will be a huge amount of work but I have read many postings saying they have done that and it did not solve the problem so reluctant to do that if in the end I will spend two days for nothing?   Could go back to SL or Lion as I have bootable backups but why should I have to do this on a year old MBP to make it work properly?  Seems there ought to be a solution on this but Apple does not seem to have one?  As I said in my original post all seemed good for the first month of ML then it began going down hill and has continued to ever since.  I did notice last night that something strange seemed to help for a little while.  I loged out of the unit as I have auto login and when I relogged in all seemed much quicker and better but today it has started to slow down again?   I know everyone with this problem would like a solution!
