10.9.2/3.1.1 server terrible transfer speed!

Hi,
Just installed a brand new mini with 16GB mem and SSD disk. The transferspeeds, afp or smb are absolutly terrible. Anyone?

I'm going to guess that there's some sort of a network involved here, and that you've tested local transfers and those run at (much) faster speeds.
Slower network transfer speeds are usually some combination of WiFi interference, or problems with the wiring or the switch (some patch cables can really hinder performance), or a misconfigured speed or duplex setting with a wired network connection, or a slow network link somewhere.  Older 100 megabit ethernet (MbE) switches are slow choices for storage access, and gigabit ethernet (GbE) networking is preferred here.
Start testing some different configurations, and see if you can isolate the trigger.

• Slow fileshare transfer speeds with Lion Server

I'm running Lion Server on a Mac Mini and using SMB to share files between the server and both Windows and Mac machines. I can't figure out why I can only get 2 Mb/s transfer speeds between the server and the other machines. I'm quite certain I'm not limited by my network and the disk write speeds clearly exceed 2 Mb/s. Any suggestions for boosting this speed or is this an actual limit of SMB or Lion Server?

Have a similar issue on a Macbook Pro mi 2010 : since the 10.7.3 update, Samba file sharing (to access a FreeBsd server over the LAN) is extremely slow. I mean I can't work normally since the update (3 weeks).
I've reported the bug to Apple. I think it is a bug limited to some machine version (because other mac in the office do not have the issue)

• Terrible download speeds - modem problem???

Hi there, I have recently complained to Telstra about the terrible download speeds and the lights on my modem (the the ethernet, wireless and internet always flashing green).  I have ADLS Elite which is a joke when it takes so long on most days to dlownload.  There was a problem with the line which they reckon they fixed but who knows.  Could it possibly be a problem with this modem?  I have had the same one for about 5 years now and I reckon it has been a problem from the start as my speeds have never really been very high.  I am tired of having to contact Telstra all the time and am seriously considering going elsewhere. I hope someone can help.  By the way the moedn is a Thompson Gateway. Thanking you. Regards Yvonne

If there is issues with the light, and they have ruled out an issue with the line (as in they say that has been resolved) then it is quite possible being 5 years old that it is a modem issue.
If you are still under contract then Telstra will usually replace your modem for no charge as they usually will cover it as a warranty replacement as long as you are still contracted with them...
As it is an ADSL connection there are many factors which can restrict your ability to get higher speeds, congestion on the line, noise on the line, distance from the exchange... so even if the modem is a part of it, being on an ADSL1 port instead of an ADSL2+ port, or you might be at a distance where lower speeds are all you will obtain...
I can get the frustration of having low speeds, however depending on what the issue is, even changing providers might not help with the connection, but I would suggest having a word with the Disconnection team, they are pretty good at resolving issues, they will see what they can do to get the connection fixed, if required they should also be able to arrange the replacement modem... Plus they are in Adelaide during normal hours, on 132200 and say "Disconnect" then "no" if you want to relocate.

• Exchange server + Mail  = slow speed...

Recently, our mail system switched servers, and now we are on a new Exchange server.
Mail speed became inconsistent, sometimes it's very quick and responsive, sometimes it's stays stuck, and when I look at the progress bar, the speed of outgoing or incoming messages becomes 0 kb/s over many minutes. I have to shut down mail and restart it to push the message out.
What gives? Is this something that can be fixed in Mail settings? Please help, this is super annoying!!! By the way, I have the same problem when I access my accounts using Mail on my MBA. The settings for Mail are the same for my desktop and laptop.
Artur

First, understand that Mail and Entourage connect to Exchange Servers differently. Mail uses IMAP while Entourage uses DAV. Since you said you've tried using both applications then you may indeed have a problem with your account.
I suggest you test your connection under a different user account on your Mac OS X system or a different Mac. If this fails then you can be fairly certain the problem is with your Exchange Server account.
If you find your Exchange Server account is the problem then try resetting your domain password, which is probably the same as your Exchange Server password. Be sure to create a complex password in case your login requires it. It should be 1) eight characters or longer, 2) contain at least one UPPER case letter, 3) contain at least one lower case letter and 4) contain at least one number or special character from the shifted numbers. Something like P@55w0rd would work just fine.
If you can use Entourage with your Exchange Server I encourage you to do this instead of using Mail. Entourage can take advantage of mail, contacts and calendaring with the Exchange Server. For detailed instructions have a look at The Entourage Help Page <http://entourage.mvps.org/exchange/exchangeatwork.html>.
Hope this helps! bill

• Very low transfer speed issue on SUN4270 M2 server connected with nexus 5548 switch on 10GB fiber.

                       Hi,
I have 2 SUN 4270 M2 servers connected with Nexus 5548 switch over 10Gb fiber card. I am getting performance of just 60 MB per second while transfer of 5Gb file across 2 servers. The similar speed i use to get on 1Gb network also. Please suggest how to improve the tranfer speed. On servers, ports ET4 and ETH5 are bonded in bond0 with mode=1. The server envrionment will be used for OVS 2.2.2.
Below are the details of network configuration on server. I quick help will be highly appriciated--

Hi,
Thanks for reply..but the RX errors count is keep on increasing and the transfer speed between 2 servers are max 60MB/ps on 10GB FC card. Even on storage also, i am getting the same speed when i try to transfer data from server to storage on 10GB FC card. Servers and storage are connected through Nexus 5548 switch.

• INDD file on file server: terrible performance

Wondering if anyone has a solution to this issue...
Recently upgraded to CS6 (didn't notice this with CS4 or CS5).
We have several files that are very simple in composition (simple paragraph of text) and they are extremely slow when trying to edit the INDD file saved on our network file servers. The file has no external graphic links, no hyperlinks, and contains nothing more than a text block.
Symptom: whenever somebody opens the file and tries to edit the text, InDesign will freeze up for a few seconds, the menu bar disappears momentarily, and while trying to edit any text the process is extremely slow and glitchy.
This happens on both WinXP (4GB of RAM) and Windows 7 PCs with 16 GB of RAM.
It also happens in two different offices on different physical file servers (running Windows server).
The strange issue is if delete everything in the file, and then create a new text block and fill it with placeable text, the problem STILL persists. The file couldn't be simpler in content. Obviously the INDD files contain corrupted data or something that is causing this issue.
If we create new files from scratch, we don't see the problem nearly as often. But opening CS5 files and then saving (and/or re-packaging) in CS6 is the issue.
Temporary workaround: If we copy the INDD file to a user's desktop (local hard drive), the file behaves normally. But our workgroup operating procedures do not allow users to work from their hard drives. So this is not an option.
Can't find much on Google relating to this issue...so hoping someone here can shed some light.
Thanks!

• *TERRIBLE* "Write" speeds w/2x Samsung 850 Pro Internal SSD (RAID-0).. HELP! ( pics)

http://imgur.com/a/5p05u
Hello.. I was really hoping somebody could help me out with this, as I'm pretty much starting to lose hope..
I've attached as many relative screenshots as possible, to make it easier to quickly see what's going on.
I've got 2x brand-new, Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SSD's installed inside my MacBook Pro.. One inside the hard-drive bay, and one inside the Optical Bay (SuperDrive Bay), using an OWC Data-Doubler..
I've got these drives configured using Disk Utility, into a RAID-0 striped configuration..
The drives are rated @:
Sequential Read: 550MB/s
Sequential Write: 520MB/s

So "theoretically", I should be achieving approximately close to double these speeds (since that's the basis behind RAID-0 configurations)
Both SSD's are connected internally via SATA-III (6Gigabit Link + 6Gigabit Negotiated Link Speed).. Both in the hard-drive bay, as well as in the Optical Bay (confirmed in pictures)..
I'm getting *EXCELLENT* "Read" Speeds, yet *HORRIBLE* "Write Speeds.. to the point that the RAID-0 software configuration is not even achieving *near* the "Write" Speed of even one of these drives.. let alone 2 of these drives in RAID-0..

I've tried contacting Samsung directly regarding this issue, but since they don't exactly get along with Apple, and even more-so, dislike anything that has to do with "RAID" configurations, I was left with practically no help on that end..
I've tried contacting Apple, who said that I'm pretty much on my own, in terms of support, since they don't exactly get along with Samsung either.. and don't provide much of any support whatsoever, when it comes to third-party, hardware components that are not upgraded directly through Apple themselves.. (aka no support for user-end personal upgrades)
Both of these drives are *Brand New* directly out-of-the-box, shipped from Amazon, as "new, un-opened" items..

I apologize in advance if there's a lot of pictures to go through, however, I know how much of a pain in the *** it can be to troubleshoot these sort of problems, let alone, try to help somebody else troubleshoot these problems while not physically being there in person.. I tried to provide the most comprehensive troubleshooting steps I've taken thus far, as to hopefully make this thread as fruitful as possible, and eliminate any unnecessary steps that have already been taken..
I've tried re-formatting and re-installing OSX Mavericks 10.9.5 several times now, hoping that maybe one of them would allow the RAID formation to work as it should, yet none so far have proven successful..
If you have any time to look through and read this thread, I can't tell you how appreciative I'd be for your help and any advice possible that you can give me.. I do large amounts of audio processing, producing, along with many other taxing system processes, so I'd really like to get this RAID-0 configuration working as it should be..
Please do not waste your time by bashing RAID-0 or writing an unhelpful, opinionated comment that does not move this process forward.. I understand the risks of RAID-0, I run daily backups, as well as having an Apple Time Capsule running in full-force, all day long.. My data is well backed-up, and I understand the risks.
If anybody has dealt with this sort of issue before, please, give me any advice that you can.. I tried to put in the most effort possible with uploading and embedding all of these photos, as to not waste your time and to hopefully make this troubleshooting process as smooth as possible
Thank you all so much in advance! :apple:

Kind of getting fed up now, I either have really slow speeds or inconsistent connection. I am a heavy user, with playing games online and streaming movies and tv, so I pay for unlimited up to 20mb bb. Its not like I expect 20mb bb, but a little bit of consistency would be wonderful.

• Server to server data transfer

Hi all,
I have created BAPI for MB1A movement type 201. it gives me a list of materials in a exel file.
<b>I want to upload that file into another server located at different place.</b>
Uploading has to done through MB1C movement type 521.
uploading program is ready.
I have created BAPI for MB1C for movement type 521.
can you please guide me for this issue.

• USB v FW ??   (Home Server HDD & network speeds)

hi guys,
i have a mac mini with two HDD's as my home server/media centre. both hdds are WD My Book 1TB's (USB). i have just purchased but not picked up
http://www.wdc.com/en/products/Products.asp?DriveID=580
in regards to USB vs Firewire i am just wondering:
if the mac mini is sharing the data from a USB drive to both ethernet and wireless clients, will i notice a difference in write & read speeds using FW instead?
Currently I am sharing movies/tv recordings via ethernet to my ps3/360, and regular files (wirelessly) to my iMac and MacBook.
If you guys could give me some feedback, because if there is an outstanding difference I'll cancel it and order a 1tb with FireWire instead.
Cheers

will i notice a difference in write & read speeds using FW instead?
No. Throughput will be limited by Ethernet, even Gigabit Ethernet; wirelessly, more so.
The main benefit of a FireWire drive is the ability to boot from it. You can't do that with USB.

• Terrible Connection Speeds

Are there any known issues within the EN3 postcode area in North London, ive checked the service status website and there is nothing.
My speeds are terrible, I am getting LESS than 2mb in some cases
I work in IT, so I have done the usual. Restarted machine, router, tested with network cable etc but still terrible. Im already disapointed with the speed I normally get anyway from BT and coupled with the constant disconnections this is just another reason to move to Virgin.
On BT Speed Tester (Beta) I get
DL 2.26
UL 0,01
PING 93.38
On speedtest.net I get
DL 1.16
UL 4.46
PING 16ms
There has to be somethinge seriously wrong here.
I have an iMac i5, with Lion using wireless connection. I have tested with a network cable and results are very similar.
Obviously there is no one at BT now who I can, but is or has anyone had such terrible speeds. This is awful, really considering leaving BT.

• Non-Server Hard drive speed ?

I'm looking at one of the new Mac-Minis, and the server version is listed as having dual 500GB 7200 RPM drives.
However, the non-server version only lists 320GB or 500GB SATA drives, with no speed listed. I've looked at a display model and have seen that the 320GB drive is 5400 RPM. Is the 500GB drive 5400 RPM as well, or 7200 RPM?
Thanks, Chris

Now I see it, thank you.
The standard Mac Mini comes with 5400 RPM drives, while the Server edition comes with 7200 RPM drives.
As long as you're not needing a built-in Superdrive, the server edition sounds like a better deal, factoring in the increased rotational speed and drive capacity.
Thanks!

• Server Client transfer file

Hi!!
i'm starting to use socket and i have a problem: i have a client and a server and i want that the client sends a file (file isn't only a text file) to the server so that the server can open it. Or that the server sends the file to the client (it's the same non problem).
Please is there someone that can write the code for helping me. I don't know how can resolve this problem of file.
Thanks.......

I have a client that sends a file to a server using
pakets of a maximum of 50 bytes. When the server
receives a packet it "acknowledges" it (like TCP
would do) sending a packet back to the client
indicating if the packet has (or has not) been
received in order with errors...My first question is 'why'? Why use UDP? Why use such a tiny packet size? Why re-invent TCP?
This will never be a commercial project so I would just stop right now.

• Terrible Transfer Rate

Hello All:
Looking for some help. Network segmented into 1x and 2x ...with a 3620 router doing the routing in the middle. 1x and 2x both on their own switches...all is fine.
Just added a 3x segment and firewall and the transfer rate to and from this 3x from anywhere is horrific. 50 minutes for a 100mb file to or from 1x or 2x using a windows machine. Only 29 seconds for the same file using a linux machine (not great but a huge difference)
I have posted my config below but in a nutshell, I have FA0/0 on router 10.0.3.2 going into 3x switch along with the LAN port of the firewall 10.0.3.1.
Clients using 10.0.3.1 as gateway and this routes out to internet over a 3660.
No dropped packets on the router or switch....only 11 packets a sec rate on the router. No matter how I set port settings on any device...mix and match these settings, it is still the same. Can anyone tell me what the heck is going on??
Thanks

All - Thanks to Kevin's post, I have stumbled onto something....what I don't exactly know.
In my testing, I was FTPing from my linux box on 3x to my server on 1x...transfer rate was ok, 19 seconds for 100 mb. With my windows box on 3x, I was mapping a drive and copy/paste from 1x to 3x. That was the difference.....but WHY? I need to resolve this piece of the puzzle since I need the ability naturally, to drag and drop between 3x and 1x.
Why the difference between FTP and transferring with copy paste??
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
