10.9.2 Screwed Up My Mac Pro

I installed the 10.9.2 update on my Mac Pro (4,1) and everything seemed to go fine. Until I started the computer yesterday. When I started it it seemed to try and boot but then all I got was the power light blinking 3 times and going blank a couple of seconds and blinking 3 times again and repeating this. I finally figured out it had something to do with using a second monitor. I want to revert to 10.9.1 when everything worked. Will my repair partion still be 10.9.1 or did the update to 10.9.2 update the repair partition as well? I also have a disk image that I made of the system before the update that I made with Super Duper a few days ago if I need to use that. This is the first time I have ever had a OS update from Apple that broke more things than it fixed. I've been a Mac user since the G4 and OS9 days. Thanks in advance for the help!

Okay....After many hours of trying this and that to fix this issue I think I have some answers. First, it wasn't the update that broke things (my apologies to Apple). I tried the combo update and that seemed to work until I reinstalled a DSP card (UA UAD-2 audio processing card) along with the Nvidia Geforce GT610 video card I had been using. Then the same problem cropped up again. The computer wouldn't boot. I returned the OS to 10.9.1 and tried again. Same problem. What I finally figured out was that it's my KVM switch causing the whole mess. Both monitors work fine when hooked up directly to the Mac but when I insert the KVM switch the system will boot the first time but not if I shut it down and restart it. I've had this KVM for years and it worked okay with my G4, G5 and PC hooked up to it but for some reason it will not work with the Mac Pro in the configuration I have it now. The only other thing I haven't tried yet is having both monitors hooked up via DVI to VGA adapters and then trying to use the KVM again. Right now one monitor is hooked via DVI and the other is hooked via DVI to VGA adapter. The computer doesn't seem to have a problem with this. Actually this might be a problem with the KVM, DSP card and the aftermarket graphics card combination but everything works normally with out this KVM in the mix.
So would a new KVM fix this? I need the VGA output on the KVM because my PC only has a VGA output and the graphics chip is built into the motherboard. I'd rather not install a new graphics card on the PC and get a DVI KVM if I can help it.

2009 Mac Pro upgrade to Yosemite failed

Seven days in and my 2009 Mac Pro is still dead. Very frustrated. It had a 4x3TB AppleRAID array in RAID1+0 giving 6TB. I initially did an upgrade to Yosemite and it got stuck at the half-way point after the restart. Yes, I did patiently wait ... but gave up after 12 hours (left it overnight). I assume the upgrade was supposed to finish sooner than that?
Found one stripe in the RAID array was 'degraded' - replaced that disk (seems they had 11000 hours on them) but it was impossible (for me) to see how to get the new disk back into the RAID scheme under Disk Utility (booted up using an upgraded MacBook). Once all the disks were removed from the array, Disk Utility gave no option to create a new RAID scheme, so I downloaded SoftRAID - yay, my RAID array was back (seems Apple gave up on their software RAID in 2009?).
However, still no joy. Created a Yosemite install USB drive - seems to run but then fails at the end ... "couldn't bless installation disk: /Volumes/Image Volume".
Okay, so downloaded the Mavericks installer and created an install USB drive - same as Yosemite ... can't bless the installation disk.
What else can I try? The Yosemite upgrade seems to have well and truly screwed my poor Mac Pro. I'd already successfully upgraded two of our four Macs successfully to Yosemite (one upgrade and one clean install) so thought it was okay.
I might try booting off one of the Macs again, with the Mac Pro in target disk mode, and try to run the installer to install Mavericks or Yosemite onto the Mac Pro's RAID array as an external disk ...
Otherwise ... ?

Booted the Mac Pro from the MacBook Air running Yosemite in target disk mode. Ran the Yosemite installer on the MBA to install on the Mac Pro's SoftRAID array "Hollie" - when the installer tells me it's going to restart I see the final logs written at 04:50 below:

I dropped my mac pro. The disc drive plays but will not record. medium drive error. How hard is it to replace the drive my self. i see screws on the bottom. Could I just order a new internal drive and replace it? Or is it too complicated for the average ?

How certain are you the superdrive ONLY is at fault?
That depends on your skill level, if you grew up tearing things apart and putting them together, its absurd how easy it is.
For some however its too daunting. On a general skill level for the "average" person its about a 3 out of 10 in difficulty.
Can you order same? yes.

Disassembly of Mac Pro - Jewelers Screws?

I know this is not a PC, but why, oh why would they make the first step in getting anything apart in your Mac Pro to remove 2 small jewelers screws on the bottom of the memory compartment that are not only hard to get at, but are so blasted tight, that they get stripped out when attempting to remove them.
Has anybody had any luck removing them without a stripped screw remover?

I have found that while the Apple boards can be very helpful, many of the posters support Apple decisions even when they make no sense. There seems to be a lack of independent thinking or there are a lots of Apple drones out there. If you really want to get them going start talking about how "Dell doesn't have this problem".
Personally, I don't care who makes a product, if there is a way to make it better, I am interested. Its funny that some users would question why you want to take the Mac Pro apart. Like you need to explain your reasons before they can help you?
I have tried to remove the center CPU heat sink by moving the memory tray back but the play on my unit is not enough to loosen the tabs. In the AndanTech article the writer seems surprised that he did not break the tabs
Based on that, I think pushing the memory cage back may not be the best solution.

Mac Pro early 2008 fan assy screws

I'm tryng to find some replacement screws for my 2008 Mac Pro. After a warranty repair the front one(silver) was lost and the technicians can't find them without buying an entire assembly. Can someone posts the exact dimensions of these screws?

The technician that lost my screw was a qualified one, but he doesn'remember the fact and insisted he had to order an entire fan assy to get the screw. That particular one wasn't like the black chubby screw that hold the assy to the motherboard: it' silver, long and narrow and seems no other similar are inside the Mac Pros, so I figured to find someone that has it in place to get measured for me as I can go to a PC shop and buy another.

Raw SATA drive screw holes too shallow for 2008 Mac Pro carrier

Mac Pro early 2008. Bought a WD Black, 5-year warrantee, bare SATA drive to replace a 1TB. The 2TB drive works fine in an external enclosure, but not in an internal bay. There are four self contained screws in the drive carrier that mate with corresponding holes in the bare drive. For the 2TB bare drive, the two screws closer to the connecting pins cannot screw all the way in - the holes are not deep enough - and the drive will not mount. The carrier goes in all the way, but I deduce that the pins do not mate. I tried two carriers and two bays. Other bare drives are fine.
System Preferences/Serial-ATA does not see the 2TB drive. Neither does Disk Utility, nor FAST status.
Return the drive and try another 2TB? Clip or replace the captive screws?

Those are intriguing, but I wonder if they would also be too long.
I would trim some of the existing bolts down, or buy some of those ones you posted and, if needed, trim them down. I have an electrician's tool that has bolt-trimmers for common sizes (and 6-32 is one of them). The bolt trimmer has threaded holes near the pivot point for several different small sizes. Here is a picture of a similar tool:
The poor man's version would be to thread a 6-32 nut onto the bolt, cut it off, then remove the nut to clean up the cut threads.

Found 2 screws in and around Mac Pro

Hi,
I bought a second-hand Early 2008 Mac Pro in April and it has been running fine since I have had it.
I was inside the machine today (graphics card) and as I was laying down the machine a screw rolled in to sight!
I don't know where it came from or what it is used for but I can see others with a similar "top" that are used throughout the machine.
When I was putting the machine back in position I also noticed another screw on the floor where the Mac normally lives.
Here are some pics of the 2 screws - the one on the left of each pic is what I found loose inside the Mac Pro and the one on the right is the one I found on the floor.

Even with re-fastening the loose screw, if the heatsinks are screwed in "unevenly" it could produce less than stellar temps, as the heatsink will not be "even" with the cpu.
If this is the case after checking temps, it might be a good idea to remove the heatsink completely, re-apply thermal paste, and re-screw the heatsink on using keeping in mind going opposite-to-opposite when screwing in the screws, and also keeping track of the amount of "turns" (of the hex driver) you do for each screw. That way the heatsink will be screwed in evenly.

Migration assistant screw up, Mac Pro not seeing wifi/TC

I've been using a MacBookPro (MBP) for almost 5 years now, with a 1TB Time Capsule (TC1) using Time Machine (TM). I am the sole user, HDD is 270Gb used/50Gb free; using Mavericks, v10.9.2. On Friday, I used Sophos anti virus home edition, to scan the MBP. It comes up with no threats identified, and I uninstall Sophos.
Yesterday I took delivery of the Mac Pro (MP) with the 3Tb Time Capsule (TC3).
I booted up the MP, with the TC3. I did not, at this stage, connect the TC3 to the internet. Using TM, I backed up the MP. TC3 flashes the amber light.
Using Migration Assistant (MA) I tried to copy the MBP to the MP, 3 times. This did not work. At the point where the target machine has listed what is available to transfer, I click Continue and MA on the MP closes, on the MBP it says something like connection lost. The screen where this happens, lists 3 items available to transfer Application, Documents/Date and Computer settings; with a content of 128kb indicated, which is clearly wrong! The connection was an Ethernet cable direct from the MBP to the MP.
At this stage, I decide to connect the MP to the internet using TC3, there's some settings to be changed on TC3 using Airport Utility and it connects ok. TC3 has a steady green light.
I run 2 software updates on the MP. I surf the net briefly, to make sure it's ok.
I try again to use MA. This time, the dialgoue box listing what's available to transfer is different. There are 2 or 3 more options, colour is present, the font is different, the box is about the same size. The MP would not let me take any screenshots as all other applications are closed when MA is running. I don't think it gave me the size of what was being transferred, but it looked more hopeful, so I Continue and the transfer starts, with an estimated time of 33 minutes.
The transfer completes.
The MBP, as you would expect, has not changed, the MP has, but not in the way I expected. Applications appear to have all transferred (without checking them), no Documents/data and no Downloads appear to have transferred; I ticked to transfer everything.;I know I can reconnect the Ethernet cable and simply copy the data across.
But the main problem appears to be, the MP does not see the wifi.
Ethernet cable is removed.
The MP asks if I want to give permission to eeEvents manager (I presume calendar related) and say yes. It also asks if I want to install a Java run time, no.
In System preferences/Network it tells me a new Thunderbolt bridge has been found and asks if it's ok, to accept it, yes. It tells me the Ethernet cable is disconnected, rightly so; it says Airport is not connected.
I open Airport utility, no sign of the TC1 or TC3 despite it searching. Apart from TC1, the MP, MBP and TC3 are sat within a couple of feet of each other.
I turn on TC1/TC3 (separately and not at the same time, then at the same time), but the MP does not see them. I've reset TC3, rebooted the MP and still the MP does not see it.
I don't get any errors or warnings coming up.
I think my next option is to try and reset the MP to the factory settings, but this won't work, as I've no internet connection to reinstall OS X. No disc is sent with the MP.
Any suggestions as to what to try? Otherwise, I'll be off to the Apple Store tomorrow for a One to One!! :-(

Take the MP and connect it via ETH to your main router.
Restart the machine holding down command option R, you should see a spinning globe
Open disk utility and reformat the MP HD as Mac journaled
Then install OSX on this drive

One important thing to note is that the official Apple Airport Card Wireless Upgrade Kits come complete with the two micro screws which are needed to install the card.
These screws are not readily available, so ensure that they are included when you buy your Upgrade Kit.

However, when I open the project on my other Mac Pro running Snow Leopard and FCP 6, the footage works fine as it does on my newer Imac running Mavericks and FCP 7. I have tried a Quicktime update on the Mac Pro that the footage doesn't work on but it says that I already have the newest version of Quicktime installed. I have also tried reinstalling the Final Cut Pro Studio twice, still no fix. I'm completely out of solutions and need to be able to edit HDV footage on this machine. Any help would be great. Thanks.

there was a recent software update that seemed to screw HDV up. Do some searching here over the last month or 2 and you'll find a bunch of posts and some possible solutions.
Worst case scenario, do as Shane suggests. But might I suggest you take a look at the user tips section of the forum. there are some great tips on how to prevent these sorts of problems by cloning your startup drive, etc.

Can I move hard drives from one Mac Pro to another?

I have two mid-2010 Mac Pros that I work with daily - one 8-core on 10.7.3 and one 12-core on 12.7.4. I would like to take all of the drives out of one Mac Pro and put them in the other and vice versa, essentially trading their content. It probably sounds pointless, but I would like to build the more powerful one out from scratch, and right now the less powerful one is nearly empty.
Can I simply shut off both machines and swap all of the drives in one for all of the drives in the other? I would keep them in the same bays in the machine I'm trading them with, but I'm unsure if I will screw something else up.

I've moved drives from a Mac Pro 1,1 to a 5,1 and they were able to boot the newer Mac, but to ensure that the OS was configured for the newer machine, I ran the appropriate combo updater once the drive was installed. If you're planning to stick with the drive rotation, doing that shouldn't hurt and might help even though the machines are of the same vintage. Note, however, that some commercial software keys in on machine specifics and/or the serial number to prevent piracy, so swapping drives can cause other problems.

What is the best way to set up my new Mac Pro?

Not wanting to screw up in a process I've not done with a brand new machine before, I'm looking for feedback on my plan for setting my new Mac Pro next week...
The physical plan is this:
For RAM, I have four 2GB SDRAM's plus the supplied six 1GB modules. My plan here is to install the 2GB rams into the first four slots and install four of the 1GB modules into the remaining four slots for a total of 12GB's.
When the cost for 4GB modules gets down to reasonable, I'll buy four of them and bump the current rams down the line which will then give me a total of 24 gigs where I'll stay.

which, thanks to this forum, I now understand, with the correct firmware installed, function well so I will install it and be able to establish hardware RAID. I will create a RAID 0 set with the three Velociraptors and use it to store all of my data files.
Backup will happen on a 1TB WD 'Caviar Black' external drive connected through one of the Sonnet card's external eSATA ports and using the OS 'Time Machine' software.
And that's the physical plan. My question is about setting things up. The physical installation part is straight forward and I don't expect any difficulties but I'm wondering what is the best way to install the operating system.
Do I take a first step keeping the supplied hard drive installed, install the solid state drive into the next drive bay and then transfer the contents from the supplied drive onto the SSD or do I do the complete physical installation process and do a 'C' drive start up and install the OS that way?
And, do you have any tips/suggestions on setting up the RAID 0 set?

oh mighty Hatter, I knew you'd have helpful guidance to offer! And thank you. You've confirmed my anxieties about the Sonnet card; kind of a 'too much, too quickly' sort of thing. And it's not that Sonnet's not a good company. Just everything to do with new technologies and the growth curve we all, manufacturers and users, go through when they come out. And, for sure, the new Mac Pro's are new technology; the single biggest forward leap in Apple's top-of-the-line machines for some time far as I can tell. Just reading at Intel's website about the Nehalem's is a joy!
So, I will proceed now with everything except for the controller card, leaving that 'til later. In the meantime, I think I'll just happily run with the four hard drives all running independently. No software RAID. I know just those, the SSD boot drive plus Velociraptor trio's going inside of a 2.66ghz 8-core Nehalem Mac Pro is going to be a working pleasure. Heck, this way, I'll get settled in and used to the machine's speed, have a great time doing so and then, in however many months, I can jump into spending another chunk of money on an excellent RAID card, RAID card's dear Barefeats will have tested and reviewed for us, set up my RAID 0 set and head of to those new races watching my computer leap for joy! Could be that, by then, the cost of Intel 160GB X25-M's will have dropped enough that I can afford to go for a second and have a two SSD RAID 0 boot drive... Yummy!

Interesting to read about the problems people have had with Sonnet's 2.17 update in PPC's... In this computer, my PowerMac G5 dual 2.7ghz, I have a Sonnet 'Tempo Sata X4P' controller card. I downloaded and installed 2.17 and got the same troubles; no cut, no paste, no 'drag and drop' etc. It was miserable.
Mine, fortunately, magically corrected after running the 'permissions verify and correct' process in Disc Utility and, after a restart, all was back to almost normal but for one exception; the Sonnet card was no longer present or functioning including the four eSATA ports out the back. (I ran Tech Tools Pro 5's repair suites first but, and who knows why, it didn't correct the problem...) This one was absolutely in the 'who knows what the f_'s going on and why it disappeared but did' class.
Oh, the other remnant is that, when the computer goes into sleep, after about five minutes, the fans rev up, and up, and the computer's frozen; only access is to do a forced shutdown pressing and holding the power button, so I've had to adopt a 'shut down whenever leaving it for more than fifteen minutes' approach to this dear friend. Once I've fully moved into and established my new one (which should arrive today, by the way... Yippeee!!! Can't wait!), I'll do a complete restoration on this one including taking out the Sonnet card. Usually, I sell my old Pro's but, this time, I'm going to keep this one as a back up and just general second computer for times I might need it. It has been such a great and dependable machine. Keeping it seems the right thing to do.

Mac Pro 2009 won't boot.

Hello,
Since yesterday my computer simply refuse to boot (Mac Pro 2009, Quad-Core 2.93 with a flashed Radeon 5870).
It was working fine the day before, I shut it down, unpluged it and when I came back the following day it wasn't working anymore.
When I try to boot it I can hear the fans but not the starting "DONG" it should do.
I tried to replace the graphic card with my old ATI 4870, tried to switch with some old RAM I had and tried to disconnect my hard drives one by one but it did nothing at all.
The only thing I have is this red dignostical LED you can see on this picture. I tried to find it's meaning but I wasn't able to find anything.
It would be nice if someone was able to tell me what this LED meant (and even nicer if it wasn't something expensive to replace !).

Hello once again,
So, I finally had time to look a little deeper into this processor board and after removing the heatsink and cleaning the processor I noticed two little plastic screws (the ugly little red arrow on the picture I took from macbidouille.com, not the nice and big one) maintaining another heatsink on the board.
I'm not sure what is the component under this heatsink but one of these screws was broken (they aren't really screws but I don't know how to explain in English) and the heatsink wasn't correctly positioned anymore so I replaced these two screws, put everything back in order (with some thermal grease on the processor and the unknown component) and everything worked like a charm when I was done.

Intel Mac Pro w/10.4.7 - I need to access a 2003 Western Digital hard drive

Hey another question for the gurus of Mac out there. Got an Intel Mac Pro running 10.4.7 and I need to access old information from someones else's Western Digital (internal/ external w/case) drive. It's a "WD1200JB-00RCA1" model drive from 2003. I've already tried using the case with firewire connection on both my laptop and Mac Pro, but it will not mount. I does get power though. I'm thinking of trying it internally, but know that the Mac Pro is picky about specific types and specs on drives. Just curious if anyone thinks I can make it work internaly without screwing up the drive or more importantly, the Mac Pro.
Apparently this same drive was used internally on a mac back in 2003, but obvioulsy an older Mac. Any tips appreciated.

That drive (according to WD) is a WD Caviar SE 120GB UDMA 100 IDE drive. Assuming everything is set-up correctly, external enclosures typically require the drive to be jumpered as and IDE master, then it should mount.
The fact that it doesn't mount is not a good sign.
You could try this internally in the spare optical drive bay - you'd need a 5.25" to 3.5" mounting kit. If I were to go this route, I'd disconnect the optical drive temporarily - the cables will reach better and you stand less chance of getting an IDE bus incompatability with the optical drive.
I think the default set-up for the MacPro IDE bus is Cable Select so you may need to look into jumpering the drive dor this (CSEL)

Mac Pro won't boot after forced shutdown

Hi all, hopefully someone will be able to help with this.
This is a Mac Pro (don't have the exact spec right now, but will have later, I think it's a dual), which is used to run ProTools. It has no internet or network connections.
It's running OS X 10.5.8 and has been for quite a while with no problems. Nothing new has been installed recently (hardware or software).
The other night it was playing back a ProTools session and recording a mix of the result when it started behaving strangely. When ProTools is recording, it creates a waveform display of the recording as it goes, and this suddenly started being corrupted by what appeared to be bits of a photograph or video image. The owner tried to hit "Stop", but nothing would work. Mouse still moved, but no button response, keyboard shortcuts ineffective, and Force Quit did nothing, so in the end he had to kill it by holding down the power button.
Since then it won't boot normally, though it will boot into Safe Mode with no problem.
On a "normal" startup, it powers up, goes through the grey screen/Apple logo/spinning thing stage on the left monitor, then that one goes blue, then both monitors go blue for a few seconds and finally both screens go black, with a mouse pointer in the top left of the left screen. You can move the mouse all over both screens (though if you wait a few seconds it leaves a copy of the pointer in the top left), but that's as far as it gets. Disk activity continues for a while (maybe a minute or so) after the screens go to black, and the spinning rainbow thing comes and goes, but it then seems to give up.
Here's what I've tried so far:
Boot into Safe Mode - no problem
Verify disk using Disk Utility - no problem
Repair permissions - loads of screwed up stuff, all with "permission should be ?-----" . Repair didn't work. Finally fixed these by running the 10.5.8 combo updater twice (known issue with this updater), then repairing again. Permissions now come up clean.
Cleared all caches etc. using Cocktail - slight improvement. Before this it was sticking on the one blue screen stage.
Got rid of a few corrupt preference files using Cocktail (all last modified years ago) - no difference.
Reset PRAM and MBC - no difference
Tried booting with everything disconnected except one screen, keyboard and mouse - no difference.
I'm going over later to see if reseating cards/removing memory etc. will make any difference, and to see if it will fire up fom it's original 10.4.? CD.
Beyond that, I'm kind of out of ideas, so I figured I'd see if anyone else had any!
Below is (what I think!) is the relevant bit of the log file, showing a failed boot, forced power off and reboot intoSafe Mode.
Any clues to corrupt files etc. in there?

Yes, I did resolve it - it was the graphics card. Changed that, updated OS X and it was done.
I can't now remember exactly which card I used, and I'm away at the moment so I can't get to the infomation, but I do remember that it was a full length card with a large heatsink, and was a bit of a pig to squeeze into the chassis!
Had to buy an adaptor for the second monitor connection, but that didn't cause any hassle. I got the card and cable from the local Apple Store.
It also theoretically needed a later version of OS X than was already there, but since it allowed me to boot off the CD, that didn't matter (and it worked with the old one anyway, as it turned out).
Oh, and also of course, although it's a bog standard PC card, you have to pay way over the odds for it because it has to have different PROMS for a Mac. (Thank you Apple.) Just part of the price we all have to pay for using Macs.
I seem to remember that there was a certain amount of dancing involved in upgrading the OS afterwards (might have had to do one step twice), but nothing that unusual.
